Bradley’s Buzz: From Knowshon to Algernon
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Knowshon knows how to say nothing
I can say from recent experience that prompting Knowshon Moreno to speak consecutive sentences is a challenge on the order of getting Bobby Cox to say anything negative about one of his Braves. ESPN The Magazine — the publication lots of people buy but few actually read — has splashed Moreno on its cover, and Alyssa Roenigk drew the difficult assignment of profiling a player determined to keep a low profile. Her story runs for 22 paragraphs and features four direct Knowshon quotes. The longest of those runs 15 words.
Journalism 101: When confronted with a reluctant subject, the enterprising reporter must get other people to talk. Mike Ogle of The New York Times got even less from Moreno — his story includes only one direct quote and notes that “the [phone] interview has been going on for only a short time before Moreno asks if he is done.” So Ogle made the trek to Belford, N.J., to speak with Moreno’s grandmother and legal guardian, and that interview had to be arranged through Georgia’s media information department.
It’s a tricky thing, publicizing a Heisman candidate who doesn’t want publicity. The last Georgia Bulldog to take the trophy was a famously engaging conversationalist who was more than happy to call out-of-town reporters whenever Claude Felton asked, which the Hall of Fame publicist did almost every day over three event-filled seasons. And, having been on the receiving end of two of those calls, I can attest that Herschel Walker never once asked if we were done.
Why is this worth mentioning? Because reporters (though not AJC reporters) vote on the Heisman.
Cancel those Miami reservations
An online publication called The Money Line Journal dismisses Georgia’s chances of winning the BCS title and gives the Bulldogs only a 6.2 percent chance of finishing with just one loss.
This (unnamed) mathematician believes Georgia will play in either the Capital One or the Outback bowls and avers that Matthew Stafford isn’t a “credible” passer. Which I must say is a wholly incredible assertion. Ask Auburn if Stafford can hurt you. Ask Alabama.
Braves’ new (and ugly) world
It wasn’t so long ago that the Braves brimmed with talent both at the major-league level and below. Writing for SI.com, Nate Silver of Baseball Prospectus presents a list of players who would/should be the first 50 taken in a forward-looking fantasy draft. Only one Brave makes the cut — Brian McCann at No. 11. Chipper Jones rates an honorable mention.
I’m not a big stat geek, but I’d concur with that appraisal. And I’d use it to reach the following conclusion: The Braves aren’t apt to win again anytime soon because they’ve simply run low on top-shelf players.
Debating prospect Ryan
If nothing else, the Falcons’ decision to start Matt Ryan ensures that a team the wordsmith Boomer Esiason describes as “crappy” will get a disproportionate share of cyberspace. Esiason tells Clifton Brown of Sporting News Today that Ryan shouldn’t be starting. Boomer says the Falcons should do as the Bengals did with Carson Palmer and sit Ryan for a year. And that sounds like great advice, given that Palmer has gone on to reach so many Super Bowls. (Note sarcasm.)
Writing for ESPN.com, Pat Yasinskas offered a more measured take on the Ryan issue, and I can tell you the Falcons went through exactly the sort of on-the-one-hand-but-on-the-other mental gymnastics Yasinskas describes. But they believe starting Ryan is the proper course because Ryan isn’t David Carr and isn’t Tim Couch. They believe Ryan is more prepared to start than any rookie since Ben Roethlisberger. And Big Ben has won a Super Bowl.
PJ of GT and the OBS
Here’s an endorsement of Paul Johnson’s option-based spread by Gerald Ball in something called the Bleacher Report. That’s another online publication new to me, but Ball’s thesis makes some sense. Key sentences: “Teams did not abandon the option because it was ineffective. Teams adopted the passing game because it’s what gets you noticed by the media.”
Me, I think the reason teams started throwing the ball all over creation is because such a scheme is easier to sell to recruits and, even more significantly, easier to coach. The option requires precision on the part of all 11 players. The West Coast Offense requires only that some 300-pound offensive linemen hold their blocks for 1.5 seconds while a quarterback takes a three-step drop and chucks a 3-yard pass.
Algernon visits Leavenworth (but gets to leave)
Alge Crumpler, once a Falcon and now a Tennessee Titan, told Terry McCormick of The City Paper of Nashville that he’d visited Michael Vick in jail before the start of training camp. Crumpler didn’t reveal much about Vick’s state of mind or of the prison experience in general. But I’m sure Vick was happy to see him.
Then again, it’s hard to know these things. It has been nearly a calendar year since Vick addressed the public. And, giving his circumstances, you’d have to say he’s an even tougher interview than Knowshon Moreno.

I agree with that mathematician, Stafford isn’t a very creditable (much less incredible) passer. On a team like UGA he should be in the top 20 of QBs - but according to the QB rankings from last year, Stafford was 56th, which is in the middle of pact for Division 1A (or what ever classification they decide to call major college football these days) - out of 118 schools. I know, I know, Some of you will respond about the “dropped passes” - well that happens to every QB. Some of you have been complaining about the dropped passes from Stafford for the last 2 years - maybe you might think that the QB (and not just the receivers) had something to do with that.

Gator Bait.. you are an angry young lady. The game will be decided on the field and that rush of emotion you expect from your team will last about into the second series of downs. I have no idea who will win but I do know that last years touchdown dance will not be the factor one way or the other. The best prepared team with the best players always wins out.

This guy can’t win. He doesn’t go out and get in trouble. He makes his grades. He doesn’t get on camera or in interview rooms and proclaims he’s the greatest to ever play. All he does is go about his business on and off the field and you people have a problem with it. I will take this from a high profile athlete any day. It sure beats the other BS that goes on in sports today. This is one of the main reasons Knowson is the MAN!!!

Maybe the braves aren’t flush with young talent anymore because over the last 6-8 years they’ve traded all of it away!! Hell, they got rid of Salty and 3 other prospects for the Tex trade alone!! That was well worth it considering we had him for 2 half seasons!!!!

YOUR VEILED ATTEMPT AT RIDICULE IS APPARENT.
HOW COME YOU DIDN’T GET A LIVE INTERVIEW WITH KNOWSHON? YOU SHOULD SCRATCH YOUR HEAD ON THAT ONE. DID YOU SEE THE LIVE INTERVIEW ON ESPN? THERE’S A LESSON IN HUMILITY. TAKE SOME NOTES.
AND I DON’T THINK YOUR GOING TO GET A X-MAS CARD FROM CMR.

It’s any player’s prerogative to speak at length with the media or, as is the case with Knowshon Moreno, to keep it brief. Understand: I’m not criticizing — I’m just pointing this out, especially in light of the recent run of major Moreno stories.
As I tried to point out a couple of weeks ago, Matthew Stafford isn’t much more revealing. He offers a bit more verbiage, but likewise not much in the way of insight.

the braves are a pathetic oganization who have let their farm system fall apart.
the ajc NEVER saw it coming and even mr. bradley picked them to win the east. mark bradley knows very little of which he writes about just look at his picks, they are usually the kiss of death.
his comparison of carson palmer and big Ben is a case in point.
the pittsburgh steelers are head and shoulders better team and Organization than the lowly cinncinnati bengals have ever been and big Ben had the players that the bengals has ever had.
they might the the worse organization in the nfl.

Dude didnt say Stafford wasnt a credible passer…..he said the passing attack wasnt credible. That is a bit much as they are ‘credible’, but heck, Vandy has a ‘credible’ passing game. Erratic is a more accurate description. Bottom line if UGA wins a BCS title with that schedule, they have earned it big time.

Moreno and Stafford are doing the right thing by not saying much. Playing through that schedule will be tough enough we do not need to give our opponents any bulletin board material. The UGA haters will talk trash if they speak or not so the dogs will let their play do the talking for them.
I agree with Boomer Esiason. We signed Redman and have Harrington, both could play this year and allow Matt Ryan to sit and learn. But, Coach Smith and Mularkey will do a great job in getting the young QB through the season. But, if I compared assessments of a QB I would not use a writer that went to law school against an ex NFL Qb that was a 4 time Pro Bowler, 1988 MVP and lead his team to a couple of Super Bowls. But, I guess you writers stick together. Also Palmer may not have won a Super Bowl but it is safe to say he is one of the top 5 QB’s in the NFL.
Crumpler visits Vick, like Crumpler said at the beginning of the ordeal over a year ago. “I will not judge the man”. But, its good to see people that will stick with a man when he’s down, thats the measure of a good friend and a good man.

The less Knowshown says the happier I get. The Media doesn’t know how to act when an athelete doesn’t want to have his quotes scattered all over the place day in and day out. Chalk it up right now. Knowshon will never talk much but will be the rare star athlete that doesn’t speak that will remain a star. If the media would back off with filling helium in guys heads maybe the actions of the player on the field would get more press than their quotes, quotes the press loves to have. Who cares about the Heisman the voters never get it right anyway, so if Knowshon has a Heisman year and doesn’t win because he’s not a good interview then so be it…who cares, Knowshon doesn’t and neither do I, the Heisman is overrated anyway and most bust in the NFL anyway.

I like the way that Mark Richt, Matt Stafford, and Knowshon Moreno are going about their business. They keep the comments to a minimum and that shows they’re focused which should have opponents worried. The more everyone talks about they’re schedule and the haters talk about the Dawgs choking, the better they will play. And while the Dawgs are preseason 1#, ESPN is still talking up the Gators and the Buckeyes while focusing on UGA’s on field problems and tough schedule. I think the doubt over UGA being the clear 1# will work in they’re favor b/c the Dawgs play better when they’re doubted. As for FLA, I think the Gators will probably win this year since their schedule is so weak with one exception: if UGA has a loss or two going INTO the FLA game and the Gators are undefeated, UGA will expose the Gators. Believe that!

You know, with all these ‘targets’ being painted on our backs by the pre-season forecasts, we need more like those that say we won’t do it…more like T. Moore’s UGA will be a big disappointment…more like the Game Day ‘pi**ts’ all picking that we won’t do it…and all the gator-fans claiming that ‘this time’ they’re really gonna ‘pick up the gauntlet and show us how tough they are. Because without it we’re gonna think that all we have to do is throw our helmets out on the field and that’ll be that. I mean, we don’t even know just how lucky UGA VII’s gonna be yet so how can we allow ourselves to get overconfident?

Knoshown obviously prefers to do his talking on the field. And, quite understandably, he probably does not trust the media. I wouldn’t either if I were in his position. Georgia has been under more media scrutiny than any preseaon #1 in history. I am sure of it. That’s not whining. Its the truth. At any rate, I do not at all see how this might reflect negatively on Knoshown. He should be praised for this. Unfortuntely, the media will likely use it against him. And then they wonder why he won’t talk to them. Go figure.

Mike Vick, fought dogs, had terrible friends, made terrible decisions off the football field, can’t manage his money and has a little more than a year left to continue to think about those actions and decisions. Leave the man alone!!! Alge went to visit him and that makes this column…for what? Alge can’t pardon him. Do you know who went and visited Maurice Clarett last week? Even if you did why would you tell us, it doesn’t matter. Vick’s in jail and you guys still talk about him, I thought him going to jail is what you wanted so you wouldn’t have to talk about him anymore? Vick is learning his life lesson at the age of 28, about (10 years too late) but better late than never. Dogs, dogs damn dogs is all I got to saw, I’m not any media outlet payroll so I can say the truth without the backlash of losing a check. They were freakin Dogs!!! They can’t pay a bill (only make them), they can’t raise a child, they can’t commute to work and are creatures just like the termites in your home and the tigers that were killed in African years ago “because people were scared of them”. We (bonehead Americans) care more about the life of a DOGS over the life of a human, my what a standard to hold yourself to. I don’t dogfight, I do not own a dog (I have real children) or gamble on dogfighting but I have enough common sense to know that they are just Dogs, do I condone dogfighting, NO. Even UGA dies in less than 10 years so really… Upon Vick’s release there will be more media coverage and I truley hope Vicks sticks it to the media by saying “No Comment” 100,000 times. Then you can write about how and why he is saying “no comment”, that will draw the readers in, front page news!! Give it a rest!!!

I agree with hop… you are being disingenuous if you contrast Palmer and Big Ben based on the number of Super Bowls they have won. Big Ben went to a team with a well-established line, running game, defense, and culture of winning. Palmer had no such luxuries aside from two outstanding wide receivers. Bradley, it’s quite a cop-out for you to respond to hop’s legitimate argument by debating semantics instead of addressing the point made.

Hmmm, middle of the pack quarterback after his sophomore season (despite 20 wins), a running back who is a potential Heisman candidate not giving the media anything to throw back in his face or fire up opponents, yet it p** the media off and some are already threating to hurt him in their voting? So the Heisman is NOT based on accomplishments, but is truly a popularity contest! Perhaps, the team is truly focusing on something more important to them, winning a National Championship! Hell go ahead and give the Heisman to whatever USC QB du jour is and keep voting to keep Ohio State in the NC mix… Hopefully Georgia will just do their business, play each game with intensity and heart, and be there at the end!

It’s odd that so many readers get sadistic pleasure from taking cheapo shots at fine journalists — day in, day out.
In the mind of the readers — at least the sadistic ones — that’s just fair play. However, if a journalist actually responds to them (without vitriol, mind you), someone is sure to cry foul.
Huh? YOU can throw fastball fastball fastball at someone’s head and then YOU get upset when they line the next pitch into center field for a base hit?
What type of “sportsman” are you? Wouldn’t it be fitting if just once, about 100 journalists showed up at your job and stood around all day while you worked, all the while carping about how worthless you were, and about how you suck. Will never happen though. They have better things to do.
But more importantly, they’re better than that.

I think he is smart to recognize the type of people who work as reporters and how slimey they really are.
Andy you Mark point out that he should remember who votes for the Heisman. the insinuation is that writers are so slimey that they will not vote for him even if he is the best candidate on the field because he did not give them a lot of direct quote material.
Well if the sports writers are such little men as to devalue the Heisman by giving it to someone else because he gives them more quotes…
then shame on the writers for devaluing the Heisman trophy. It must really not mean that much anymore - especially to the writers.
So all of you sports writer Heisman voters out there: take the trophy and stick it up your you know whats.
And Bradley, don’t show your ugly face in Athens again if you are going to try and intimidate a college student into more quotes with a poorly veiled threat to cheat him out of a prize to which he might otherwise be entitled.
Man, I hate the AJC and sports writers, headline writers, editors, etc.

A. If Alge Crumpler visits a friend in prison, that’s his business.
B. Time will tell which team is number 1 & who the best college player is. To debate these issues is understandable. Keep in mind that Gino Toretta won this award, however. It’s hardly worth getting emotional about.
C. Palmer & Roethlisberger notwithstanding, Ryan gives the Falcons the best chance to win. That is why he is the starter. The Bengals & Steelers had their own circumstances to deal with, & handled those their own way. The Falcons want fans to return sooner rather than later. Anyone who has watched preseason must admit that Ryan looks the best, regardless of experience. The Falcons will run more than pass, anyway, if they’re smart (too much talent & $ in RBs not to).

You know what really eats up the Gator fans? Is that they didn’t think of that idea first! ESPN is upset because their boys from FLA now have to look UP at UGA. They can’t stand it, and now they will look for any excuse to bury the Dawgs every chance they get.
Personally I don’t really care if Georgia wins only one game this year, as long as they beat Florida!

wreckmaniac……obviously the dawgs aren’t great …i mean the only decent out of conference school they face this year is ga. southern… maybe they’ll schedule kennesaw state the next year to help their strength of schedule since tech brings that schedule strength down dramatically each year….the insects at the trade school do drive choo choo trains well though in between chess matches………………………..

Why is it that all the OPENLY GAY-tor fans have to read a UGA blog?? Because they wish they were DAWGS instead of openly GAY-tors. No doubt, T-Beau is a great quarterback…..but it takes a great TEAM to do the things the DAWGS will do this season.
But, like another blogger said, I don’t care if the DAWGS only get one more win this season, as long as it’s Florida.
My last question, and I guess I’ll have to wait till Georgia opens that can of WHUP A$$, what will the openly GAY-tors do when they fall to the DAWGS for the 2nd consecutive year? I guess they’ll still run their mouths like openly GAY-tors do.
