Pretty much right on with the UGA fans. I find it pretty much acceptable for a younger student to mouth off during a game or after.But it is pretty silly for grandma and grandpa to mouth off about “them Dawgs” only while they are ahead.

This is completely subjective. Everyone realizes that. For most folks, the fans we find the most obnoxious are probably those that root for the team we hate most. That said, I have been treated poorly at UGA and FLA, been treated well at Miss State and LSU (back when they were no good) and seen fans that support the same team I do act in an incredibly obnoxious manner (Bama). In short, most teams have some group of bad fans. Realize that when going to a game.

Mark, it is an interesting subject but everything depends on when they are winning and losing because ALL fans become more obnoxious when they win. You made that point with Alabama. And Georgia has become more obnoxious as the program has come back. One item on Georgia though….you are in Atlanta and surrounded by them. It would be different of you were in say, Birmingham.

The list is fairly accurate however you are totally wrong on LSU. They are clearly number 2. It is just that Baton Rouge is so far away and you aren’t exposed to them very often.

I agree with just about everything you said here, with one exception. UGAy fans have got to be the most obnoxious fans and I would say run a close second to the Gaytors. I have lived here for 12 years and it’s nauseating to have to listen to these two team’s fans.

As a Tennessee fan, I would not step foot into The Bog simply because of how the Gaytors’ fans treat the fans from opposing teams. A football game is simply not worth risking your life.

Hello Mark, I am afraid that I agree with your comments so much, I am using an alias to protect my identity in this post. That should concern both of us. A couple of points: (1) You are absolutely correct in that is is sad that a lot of people can not appear to enjoy the game unless there is alcohol involved. There is at one place you can tailgate where no alcohol is allowed, and that is the Campus View Church of Christ located on Lumpkin Street across from the track. I have parked there for years and it is very family friendly. (2) You are also correct in saying Alabama is irrelevant; however, every Alabama fan I know is still screaming, “We got 12! We got Saban! Saban Nation! We won the National Championship in recruiting!” Hopefully, there will be enough Bama fans to read this, and will a clue that they are indeed no longer relevant! Thanks Mark!

As a Georgia grad, I can admit we get obnoxious. However, the most obnoxious fans, by a long shot, are Auburn fans. Up here in metro Atlanta we focus on teams like Tech and UT; but, I used to live in Columbus and down there, it’s all Auburn. Auburn sits about 40 miles from Columbus and everyone down there walks around saying “War Eagle” as an answer to any question or as their greeting on the telephone. Most of those folks have no connection at all to Auburn except that it’s 40 miles down the road.

There are a fair number of Auburn grads/fans up here—and most I know believe Auburn is the end-all, be-all of college athletics; but, if they went to Columbus, they would fit right in.

When your program gets better, and maybe it will this year, feel free to get louder and more pompous… but until then, please keep you mouth shut. Beating Ga Tech every year doesn’t make you a national powerhouse. UGA is 7-6 in their last 13 SEC games!

you’ve gottta be out of your mind!… LSU fans are in the middle of the pack?… the visiting team (such as Auburn) has to wear their football helmets when entering or exiting the field to protect themselves from bottles, rocks, flasks, and a myriad of other projectiles raining down on the players… i recall one instance when a GA fan visited a port-a-potty and it was tipped over, rolled down an embankment, breaking the guy’s arm and when he crawled out covered in sewage, the LSU fans beat and kicked him mercilessly… no, there’s no way you can be worse than that.. and as for the Auburn/Alabama rivalry, yes many AU fans are crowing because the onslaught of Bama nation for years has absolutely insufferable… and it always goes back to..”well, if we had the Bear, then…”

KR, I have indeed been to at least one game in each of the 12 stadiums. Plus Georgia-Florida in Jacksonville and Auburn-Alabama when it used to be in Birmingham. Plus the SEC championship game in both Birmingham and the Dome. You might disagree with my conclusions, but you should know that I’m not in the habit of making things up.

Florida’s fans are far and away the most obnoxious. But Georgia’s fans aren’t far behind - and this is from a real, degree-holding Georgia alumn, NOT a “sidewalk alumn” or “Wal-Mart fan.”

Bradley is dead on: Too many of Georgia’s older fans spend all morning getting drunk on North Campus, and all afternoon acting like absolute jerks. The only reason Florida is worse is that their jerks aren’t limited to older fans. Their fans of all ages are drunk, tactless loonies - and not just on game day.

This topic was fun while in college but come on…

Isn’t it subjective as to which school has the worst fans? Does any school/team actually teach it’s fans how to be obnoxious with an official Obnoxious Camp? Every school has fight songs, cheers, and other traditions to root for the home team and root against the hated rival(s).

It’s the SAME everywhere when it comes down to behavior. The only thing that varies greatly is the scale of that behavior. Just look at the order of Mark’s rankings. You can clearly see the larger capacity stadiums and/or more traditionally successful programs towards the top of the list while the smaller traditionally insignificant schools towards the bottom. About the only schools out of place are Arkansas and LSU. Flip flop the two and it’s hard to argue.

Look at it from another angle. If this blog were about basketball guess who would probably be in the Top 2…Kentucky and Florida and that would only be due to them being the current top 2 basketball programs in the SEC (Florida with recent success, Kentucky with their storied history).

There is so much personal experience and opinion that goes into ranking “bad fans” that it’s pointless to do so. Anyone can have a bad experience with any fan at any venue. Heck, I’d say fans have more problems with their own than they do with another school if you look at social interaction 365 days a year.

Me personally? If I had to rank the conference I’d put Florida #1 but I’ll be honest and tell you why. Florida is UGA’s most hated rival. We play a neutral site game with a 50/50 split and have some serious venom and history behind the series. All of those factors means that if a Florida fan and a Ole Miss fan do the exact same obnoxious thing, I’d think the Florida fan was worse because that team is more meaningful to me as a UGA fan than the Rebels. It’s that simple. For the record Florida fans, I work with and have known many Gators in my day and all have been great people as far as I know and I’ve never been taunted during this 20 year run of dominance in the series.

To sum it all up, no matter how you want to define demographics, you’re going to find good and bad everywhere so stop trying to label one “something” as worse than other “somethings”.

Personally, I hate them all…half never went to the school they “live and die for”.

Just from personal experience… You got Florida right. Alot of parents I know down there went to UF, then there kids who could only get into the local community college or none at all are the worst fans in the SEC. Parent alums ok though. Auburn…never had a problem there. As a visitor I have always been treated with class. Funny about the motorcycles reaving after they beat us. LSU…needs to be MUCH higher. It’s the only place I’ve been called “Tiger (or anything) Bait” to my face 1,000 times and there is nothing worse than a drunken cajun on Saturday Night. Tennessee…only place I’ve been spit on or someone tried to run over a whole crowd in their 4 Runner (including their own fans). Other than those, I’ve been treated with class. South Carolina…funniest fans for the reasons you noted. Of course, the worst single treatment I got was there after Quincy Carter threw those interceptions. It was a long walk throuh the fair grounds. UGA…yeah, there are alot of 25-35 who think because they CAN drink and act like they are in college that they SHOULD drink and act like they are in college. All the tailgaters and folks around me at the games are class though.

UGAY has the most annoying fans ever. Being overrated every year really doesn’t help, but the fans bring the program to an all time low. You can see the lack of class everywhere, including the endzone in jacksonville last year. That move will ruin UGAY this year. Urban will win by 30.

I’m gonna have to go with the Gators on this one. I have never seen so many people cheer when players get injured. Many of them will still boast about breaking Tyrone Prothro’s leg. I live in Gainesville and watch games with them and it is common to see group high fives when players on opposing teams go down. Of course if I had to wear orange and blue, I probably wouuldn’t have any class either.

I’ve been to games in probably a dozen D-1A football stadiums, mainly in the SEC and ACC. There are obnoxious fans everywhere and there are nice fans (actual alumni most of the time) everywhere that appreciate you visiting their campus for a game and will share a beer or burger with you…

And then there’s Athens, where people pee off the bleachers onto crowds below, where drunk adults throw beer bottles at 10 yr old girls wearing the opposing team’s colors, where 85 yr old ladies curse alongside 3 generations of fans with no college degrees, and all that’s on a good day. Athens, where it’s no fun to attend, except to look at all the sorority girls who are more concerned with looking phenomenal than watching football.

The most obnoxious fans by far are Tennessee fans. LSU is next. Florida third, Auburn fourth.

Tennessee fans are the drunkest and most uncuth in all of college football. I’ve never seen one that actually went to college anywhere ot at least they don’t seem intelligent enough to have ever gone to college.

When it comes to being drunk, South Carlina fans rank way up there. But they are a much happier drunk than Tennessee fans who scream every vile word possible at fans of the other team and usually want to fight. Florida fans like to fight, too.

If we were ranking basketball fans, Kentucky would be the number one most obnoxious.

Bradley, I appreciate that you’ve been to games at every stadium. So have I, but the difference is that I was in the stands, not in the pressbox eating a buffet lunch and watching other games on the TV.

I’m also willing to admit that I’m not objective enough to rank UF. I can say, though, that we definitely have the loudest stadium. Call that obnoxious if you want to.

How right you are about the FL and GA fans. I am an ARK fan (and I agree with you about ARK too). When I went to the GA/ARK game a couple of years ago, I had a GA fan who was at least 70 come up to me and berate me for having on an ARK shirt. And at my age (60) I just told him to shut up and walked away.

As an ACC alumna working at an SEC school, I have to say that ALL SEC fans except Vandy’s are r-u-d-e. But my most vivid memory is of a fellow alumna of my Alma Mater and me rescuing an older lady from being TRAMPLED TO DEATH by her own side’s “fans” because they were so eager to put their broad butts into the tiny stand seats at their home stadium. florida fans are the most obnoxious, hands down. one of my best friends all my life is a UF fan, and i can’t stand his guts on game day. blue jean shorts anyone? plus, that stupid gator clap makes me want to slap every idiot thats ever done that in my face.

on the other hand, i love UGA but we’re at the top of the list as well. a few years ago at a game in athens, another dawg fan right next to me was so drunk that he tried to pick a fight with me, and not 2 seconds later he decided that he wanted to start a cheer with me? so the alcohol thing is a real problem. besides that, the ideal “we’re the best thing ever” mindset of most UGA fans is very annoying. we can’t win national titles every year, so stop acting like we got screwed out of it every year!

They are thrilled if they actually win but I don’t think they are bitter about their situation like say Georgia Tech fans. Stop telling me about your salary when we are talking about football. As a Gamecock, I’m a little surprised (but honored) we were ranked #6, but I could see where the Gamecock nation’s “delusions of granduer” could be pretty obnoxious.

This article was annoying. There are good people that root for all of these teams and there are annoying people that root for all of these teams. Just keep it clean and talk about the teams and don’t make it personal. I have had good experiences with people from all of these teams. I don’t let drunk obnoxious people ruin my good time. They did not even join bragging rights in college football until Spurrier and even then Georgia still leads them in the series, don’t even get me started on the whiner Spurrier! The Gators need to get a grip on reality and look at their history before running their mouths. Georgia fans have a right to be obnoxious, if you call that, we have a history and loyal fan base to be proud of. Not all of our fans get drunk and rowdy so be careful when you post that. Our Coach’s have been some of the best, can the rest of you say that?

From my experience, fans are more obnoxious when their teams are on the rise but haven’t won a championship or gotten the recognition they think they deserve yet. If you think UF fans are obnoxious now, you should have seen us when I arrived on campus in the early ’80s. We wrote the book on being unruly. I think we’ve mellowed quite a bit since then, but when some young kid gets enough alcohol in him, there’s no telling what he’ll do, regardless of what school you’re talking about. I used to live just a few blocks from Florida Field in the mid-90s, and from what I saw no fans were more obnoxious and full of themselves than LSU. In general though, across the board in the SEC it’s the younger guys and the ones who never went to college who get liquored up and give the fans of their schools a bad name. I love the atmosphere at Florida-Georgia in Jax with the fans jawing back and forth at each other, but in the end we should all have fun and remember that as wound up as we get every year it’s really just a game. One thing we can all agree on is the SEC rules!

First of all, I am a diehard Georgia Bulldog fan. Ok, so now all of you people who hate Georgia so much can say what you want. I don’t care. And to those idiots that keep using that UGAY garbage, GROW UP LOSERS! That is so old. In my opinion, Florida fans are BY FAR THE MOST OBNOXIOUS not only in the SEC, but in any sport/school in the nation. I live in Florida, having moved here from Georgia 3 years ago. I knew this was “enemy territory”, but I didn’t, and still don’t care. Gator fans were obnoxious even before Spurrier. They just became worse when that LOSER came on the scene. When I think of CLASSLESS, I think of Spurrier first of all. Meyer is right there with Steve on that word. Every school is going to have obnoxious fans. At every game there are going to be some jerks drinking and acting stupid. Florida is #1, and Tennesee is #2, and I mean these two schools are neck and neck. For the last two years, Tennessee has come down here for the Outback Bowl. And each time, I went to see pep rallies at the beach. Two years ago, Penn State and Wisconsin last year. For the last two years a Tennessee fan started some crap when they saw I was decked out in my Dawg shirt and cap. And for those two years, when these idiots started something, I finished it. Two years ago, my girlfriend was standing near me and was cheering for the Penn State cheerleaders. This loudmouth Tennessee fan said some things totally unnecessary, and he wouldn’t shut up. After we had a verbal go, I finally just told him to GO F—- HIMSELF. Off he went like a coward. Last year, this drunk Vol fan had to run his mouth. This guy was worse than the first one. In addition to being sauced, the dumba— had obviously never heard of a washrag and soap. Anyway, he kept on and on, my temper went up, and I threatened to kick his butt. He shut up, sulking like a coward with his tail between his legs. I don’t have any problem with Auburn, Alabama, or LSU fans, just the Vol and Gator fans.

LSU is far and away the leader in this thread. I live in Orlando, attend all USC games, home and away. Have been to every SEC venue at one point in time, and the Korndogs are impossible to deal with on anything to do with football. Gators are second. For the most part, the Bulldogs at least understand the word logic.

I’ll never forget being at Vanderbilt when a snaggletoothed Vandy fan stood up when MSU’s team ran onto the field pregame and proudly pronounced: “Go home hicks!” in one of the worst hillbilly drawls I’ve ever heard. And I’m from Mississippi.

By far - Georgia fans are the most obnoxious. All they do is bark about how “great” they are; particularly the red-neck good-ole-boys who have likely never seen a college classroom. Growing-up in a town that was predominately “dawg” fans (they can’t even spell dog) - those that were not UGA fans were constantly ridiculed - and often times - not in good ways. UGA fans are the worst, even though it’s been nearly 30 years since the one the national title (will not happen this year either). Oh - BTW - for all the talk about dominance by the SEC - if you notice, I bet 90% of those players could not have gotten into their local community college, much less a major college.

The best thing to do at the GA-FLA game is to get hammered. Then at the game, get a running start from back in the stands running down the stairs, then take a flying leap and punch a Florida fan in the back of the head. We are #1 simply because we have 12 NC and 21 SECC, and EVERY fan of ANY SEC school WISHES they had a winning record over EVERY team in the SEC and GT(for the idiots, they used to be in the SEC). AU fans are the worst bandwagon fans in the world, pre 1983 you couldn’t find an AU fan because they wouldn’t be any. NO shirts, car tags, flags on your trailers, or hats NOTHING!!!!!!!!! AU will have a bad season and then they will be in the bottom six of that poll. BUT WITH ALL BS ASIDE YOU SHOULD WANT TO BE IN THE TOP 5 OF THIS POLL, IF YOU ARE YOU HAVE A GOOD FOOTBALL PROGRAM!!!! I could care less if someone says our fanbase is obnoxious or not. They say these things because you have a good football team. the top six of this poll could be rearranged 20 different ways and it doesn’t matter, it’s that way because the SEC is the best in the country!!!!ROLL TIDE!!!!!

Mark Bradley was really fairly close with his list except that Auburn and Ga fans should be tied with Florida for that number one spot. LSU fans always ( well at least often ) are congenial and offer some of the best food and drink to visiting fans. Sure there is some “Tiger Bait” shouting going on but all in good fun and isn’t the food and good times worth a little chiding. For those not in agreement, there must be some ‘ball’ envy going on….ball envy…since LSU has 2 Crystal Balls and no one else in the SEC does. So LSU is not only the best at football and food….we’re modest as well. LOL

Mark, I’ve been on this planet a little longer than you, have been in most SEC stadiums, and have been you and realize there is NOTHING more obnoxious than a Tennessee fan. If you go into Neyland Stadium it is a reinactment of the movie Deliverance. There ARE only 2 teeth on the front row of the stadium. They DO have a pig farmer for a head coach that cries everytime something doesn’t go his way. Second has to be the LSU fans who even get into fights with the Vandy fan (singular)before Vandy discovered football.

I’m a Georgia alum and love the team but I have to say the worst of Georgia fans are pretty bad. It’s two types that make it so. The rednecks who never attended the school but manage to get tickets because the team is good now. They were hanging around Tallahassee and Gainesville in the 90’s and now they have swarmed onto our campus. Fat, drunk and obnoxious! The second worst are the former Greek graduates who want to relive thier frat and sorrority days. Big a** SUV’s and they think they have a God given right to do whatever they please. Rich, thin, drunk, and obnoxious. But, nothing compares to the obnoxious Gators. However, I do wish they would take the 1st fat, redneck group of Georgia bandwagoneers I mentioned first.

Every team has fans worth being ashamed of. I am a Georgia fan, but it would not be truthful to pretend UGA does not have their share of obnoxious fans. They certainly do! However, I currently live in Birmingham. Both Alabama AND Auburn fans would have to top my list. I think what is most obnoxious about them is that college football is a year around obsession around here. It is all they ever want to talk about. They both feel like their programs are among the elite and for the life of them they cannot understand why someone from another part of the country does not care about their team.

But all college teams have their drunk, loud, annoying fans. They are no fun to be around no matter who they pull for.

Anyone have information on whether or not the GSU/UGA game will be available PPV to DISH NETWORK subscribers. After an hour on the phone and finally able to talk to some Girl in Korea who did not know what I was talking about, I got an answer that the decision would not be made until 3 days prior to the game or that this was when the schedule would come out.

Ok Bradley - I commend you for ranking UGA, Florida, and USC fans where they should be - top of the list. How are Miss. St. fans less obnoxious than Vandy fans? They have cowbells for God’s sake! Don’t blame Vandy fans for being proud of their academics - and that Vanderbilt requires their athletes to spell, (unlike most SEC schools). They are actual student athletes, which holds them back in the SEC for obvious reasons. The most obnoxious aspect of Vandy fans is their overall lack of passion - but not all of us! Go Dores!

I believe the true measure of a fans graciousness is how they handle victory. Being a Carolina fan, I have had ample experience at losing to all the other teams in the SEC (sadly, even Vanderbilt). That being said, Auburn fans are the most gracious, and it isn’t even close. Georgia fans are horrible, especially considering how ignorant they usually are regarding football, and even their team. And though this is about football, we should consider that they only time they remember they have a basketball or baseball team is when they make the Big Dance or make it to Omaha. I was in Auburn for the nightmare that was the 2005 Auburn-Carolina game. They beat us 48-7. By the second half, the Auburn fans around me were trying to distract me from the game, and reassured me that Spurrier would certainly ensure that lop-sided defeats would become a rarity. That second half could have lasted an eternity, but instead I actually enjoyed talking football, southern food, and college towns with some of the nicest people I have ever met. They might be a little proud at their recent success against Bama, but if you were in their shoes and had to live with Bama fans for the past several decades, you would be a little plucky too.

The most obnoxious fans are those mullet head Gators! Yes! FLORIDA fans are the most obnoxious!!!! Mark Bradley did get that one right. Gators are the biggest rednecks in the SEC. Don’t forget that every Gator chick has a huge tramp stamp to go with their cut off jeans and the guys match their cot off jeans with mullets and like to scream “Yeeehaa Hoodie Hoo Go Gaytors!”

Coming in a close second are those redneck hillbilly hicks from Tennessee. They are by far the most rotund fans in the conference. Somebody put those Volunteer fans on a diet because they are huge! Not tall, just wide! Stick a WIDE LOAD sign on their butts and fix their teeth.

Third most obnoxious is a tie bewteen LSU and South Carolina. They have extremely drunk fans. LSU drinks to celebrate and South Carolina drinks to drown their sorrows. The C** cheers of South Carolina are funny and amusing, though.

Place Auburn fifth just because they like to fight.

Wait a minute there…we’uns have worked hard for our title of ‘DOGF’ (Drunk Obnoxious Georgia Fan) and I for one won’t stand for the likes of Mark Bradley to rate us so high (or low, as the case may be). I don’t have a problem with the label, cause it generally means the opposing fans usually are leaving the stadium(s) upset at the sight of DOGFs celebrating.

Now UF, sure they’re about as ‘Obs’ as any, but since they already hold the title of ‘Most Arrogant’, they need to leave the ‘Ob’ title to us. As for LSU, never been to Baton Rouge to a game, but my Cajun friends and relatives are just too ‘laid back’ to actually be obnoxious - I mean who doesn’t like to ‘Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez ‘?

Don’t mind the Orange or Rocky Top? You’re kiddin’ right? That color orange - the one that’s been left out in the sun too long - is irritating to the eye and the mind.

Auburn? You hit it right on the nose. Tuberville is a ‘preening’ you know what and the AU fans seem to be proud of the little p**.

And finally, we love our ‘sidewalk, or WalMart, or whatever’ fans, cause it means they’ve got somebody to pull for in their state that sends them home happy, and since, as I said, we’re also comfortable with the ‘Ob’ label, we’ll just do a Georgia version of ‘Let the Good Times Roll’ right here all season long.

Judging by the barrage of trash, beer cups and other garbage that littered the end zone in Tuscaloser at the conclusion of the UGA/Alabama game last season, I would rank the Bammers as #1. The use of garbage to express their displeasure is not limited to football games, either. If you don’t think so, just check out a NASCAR event in Talladega. Every time someone NOT named Earnhardt wins there, it’s another near-riot as garbage pelts the winner’s car and the track. It must be something unique only to Bammers.

I have a feeling with your level of grammar that you don’t act like in your in college because you never went and don’t know how to. Your UGA Team (not sure how you are a part of it other than your mustard stained, grease smeared UGA overalls) has not even played a game yet and you are saying one of the best of all time. I bet you are as uneducated as you are fat, which is not a good mix, I bet life has been tough on you. UGA fans are terrible, I’m a Tech fan I was in Athens when I was 12 and a 45 year old man was trying to pick a fight with me, just child, real classy. I would be willing to bet that without 95,000 people with their back they would strongly rethink about mouthing off now, simply put UGA fans are Cowards. I’ve been to most SEC stadiums only once and here is what I took from each one. Alabama- I only encountered classy, very knowledgable fans who congratulated me on the Dawgs victory. I was impressed. Auburn- Passionate fans who are generally nice. No congratualtions on the victory but a few fingers. Understandable and no big deal. South Carolina- Mostly trash talk and overconfidence. Don’t understand where it comes from. Heard some “FU Georgia” upon leaving. Kentucky- Pretty good. Passionate fans but when the game isover they could care less. Tennessee- Pretty obnoxious. Tried to verbally intimidate me during game. Kept on yelling and telling me to go home after game. Pretty obnoxious. Ole Miss- I spent most of my time looking at the girls as were the Ole Miss fans. Nothing to note here. Vandy- Felt like a Georgia home game. Florida- Unbeleivably obnoxious, threatening to start fights, throwing things, acting like spoiled brats. Horrible and nothing else in the SEC compares. Georgia- Pretty obnoxious, read my post above about Georgia fans. Never been to Arkansas, LSU, or Miss State.

As a Georgia fan of 40 years, I have attended hundreds of SEC games in Athens as well all road games. The only major disagreement I would have is having LSU ranked to “low”. I would put them second behind Florida. Don’t get me wrong, it is a GREAT atmosphere, but LSU fans are VERY obnoxious.

Being a Georgia alum, I can see how some may think we are one of the most obnoxious, however that’s just a small part of the fan base that makes us look bad at times as fans. The fine folks at UF take the cake - you can’t beat the jean shorts w/ the nice bright Orange muscle shirts or wifebeaters, coupled with the way they act just exudes the high-class fans that they are. And they’ve never lost a game to a better team - it’s always the referees or the weather to blame the loss on. And the Gator Chomp….so gay.

TENNESSEE is by far the most obnoxious. They are fat, rude, redneck, classless, staggering drunks that like to cuss and fight.

LSU and Florida fans are the next most obnoxious. Both have a high percentage of redneck trash, but not as many as Tennessee.

Give Auburn, fourth place. I hate them but they still aren’t as bad as those hillbilly redneck Tennessee fans and Florida and LSU.

Do any educated people come out of Tennessee? If so, they don’t attend Tennessee football games.

I hate to say this, but everytime I have been to Athens I have been treated pretty well even being a die hard Tech fan. Even offered beer many a time by Dawg fans tailgating. I caught it for being a Yellow Jacket, but it was almost always in good fun. Of course there are drunk rude fans, but Tech has those too.

SEC FANS as a whole aren’t that bright. Cannot appreciate good football when they see it unless it is their own team. UGA will end the season with at least three losses and will play Florida State or Clemson in the Peach Bowl. Thus you folk won’t have to travel far to see loss number 4.

Wrong Mr. Blue. LSU fans worst by far! UT tied them in 1982 in a night game. Swift running Willie Gault ran a kick off for a td to tie and UT missed a late field goal to win the game and it ended in a 24-24 tie.We had taken our big Orange and White silver eagle church bus down and as we were leaving the parking lot a fan broke out one of the windows with a stadium seat. However, this didn’t end the disappointment in Bayou country. We stopped for a stop sign and our innocent bus driver politely asked a traffic cop which turn to make and the rude cop just sreamed: “get that pile of srap iron out of here!’ Of couse we will never forget 1959 the Billy Cannon run for the win, which failed. Your rankings are a bit off from the perspective of this life-long SEC fan. The #1 ranking should have been awarded to LSU easily. Perhaps you have never been to a LSU game as a visitor and had to endure their childish abuse and behavior. Recently, at an Alabama game, about 100 LSU fans gathered outside the stadium and chanted, “Tic,toc,tic,toc,tic,toc,tic..all Bama fans can suck my dick.” Of course, they didn’t care if families were passing by with young children. At the SEC baseball tournament in Birmingham, I observed a group of LSU fans, sitting together, releasing gas and competing to see who could make the most noise and release the worst smells. These two incidents, plus having my car keyed at Tiger Stadium, are more than enough to tag them the fans that are most obnoxious and with the least class.

You must have gone to a day game or had plenty of bodyguards or state police with you when you went. You were right on target about their food though. Mark got LSU right on the money. And for those that don’t understand, redneck trash doesn’t usually have the 3.0GPA needed to get into LSU. I think most LSU fans would also agree with your top picks - Auburn and Florida but UGA quickly rose the laddder after last season. LSU lived through the same thing the year before and was disappointed at first we “had” to go to the Sugar Bowl but we got over it and weren’t STILL whining how about it the rest of the year. WE got robbed of the chance to play for the S.E.C. title because we had beaten Arkansas and we wondered what the point is of having divisions if you don’t consider the record of your division first and at the end of the season, even after UF won the BCS Title, all sports people were aknowledging LSU was the best S.E.C. team that year, much like UGA people feel about UGA last year. The difference was we went on with our lives and won it all last year - and WE DESERVE IT. Now, who wants some fried gator and gumbo?

I’m an Atlanta Gator fan. I’ve never been treated so poorly in my life then when I went to Kentucky last year. I can take a little banter but they were ridiculous. All of their fans were obviusly drinking inside the stadium and one fan dumped a cup full of bourbon on a kid sitting in front of him. The saddest part of this?

I went back to Gainesville that last two years for games (I graduated in ‘88), frankly the atmosphere was subdued. It was almost sad. Maybe Jacksonville is different? I made it a point to skip this game when I was in school. It was the game where all the “locals” would come and start trouble. Folks that actually went to the schools seem to respect on another (and for the most part we were trying to bed your coeds.)

Look, you all want to get back at Mark? Stop responding. You’re giving him what he wants. Of course he doesn’t know crap, that’s the point. What he should’ve admitted is outside of the (bottom? top?) 4, all the power schools in the conference are the exact same. I’ve seen trash, liquor, cups, etc. thrown at many stadiums by various fan groups. To truly look at things, you have to look at how the different groups break out. First, you call it a draw for the frat sections…they’re all obnoxious and drunk by the end of the game. Then there are the rest of the students, the “wal-mart” fans (read rednecks that didn’t go to school there) , the working alumni, and the RV set. Apply your focus to each of those groups, then add it up.

If you want to add an interesting aspect, you add in some reducion factor of success. Those teams that have historically had more success will always be more cocky. So you balance out success against mediocrity and determine where the worst fans are based on the level of their team.

But really, just stop commenting and making Mark smile. Perhaps if the thinks no one is reading his stuff he might just try to be a better reporter.

This list can go so many ways but the truth is that every team in the SEC except for Vandy and Kentucky are very obnoxious when it comes to football. I would have to say Miss State and their cowbells are very obnoxious so I don’t know how they got 12. There is NO way to point out one school over another period. I have been to games at every stadium in the SEC and they all have their groups of buttholes who have to mess up a good time. I am very upset when I see fans of UGA getting in old peoples faces from other schools but I have had it happen to me especially at Auburn and tennessee. What it comes down to is we have the best football in the country and the most obnoxious fans. Oh Well! I will take that rather than the worst football and fans who don’t care.

The bottom line is that very few people think that the fanbase of “their team” is as obnoxious as everybody else. Tennessee gets a bad rap, but I’ve been to games in Knoxville and was treated very well. As a Bama fan, I know we can be annoying so #4 is fair I think. I have heard very good things from Tennessee and Auburn fans about how they were treated when they came to T-town, but I’m sure bad experiences happen. The two worst experiences I’ve had were at Georgia and at LSU, but they weren’t so bad that I would degrade the entire fanbase (after all, alcohol can make anyone become a blithering idiot). Even though plenty of folks have commented on how their team’s rival is the worst (usually UGA or Auburn posters), we all know that every fanbase covers the entire spectrum. By the way, even Bama fans need to remember that unless you have actually played for “your team” using the words “we” and “us” as if you are strapping it up every Saturday is stupid. As a fan, when it comes to your teams accomplishments, your actual contribution is somewhere between Jack and Crap. And Jack left town.

I guess the ACC fans want to enter the fray. So just to give equal time here the most Bizzare game I’ve been to being a Dawg was a game between Ga. Tech and Maryland. I tried to get into the game but the Tech Geeks are so impressed with their Technological feats that at the end of a play no announcement for a flag on the play or whether a 1st down was made on a close play,no, it’s a fricken Huge screen Flashing a Coca-Cola commercial with the decibal level of a “Who” concert. The fans were yelling ‘yea’ not kill the sob.I had to give up and just watch the fans.Then I hear them yell ‘Block that kick’ for a kick-off!! My brother pointed out to me there was a row of six guys wearing pocket protectors,white buttondown shirts and ties!! my God it was the Twilight Zone.I still wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat over this. I guess the ACC fans want to enter the fray. So just to give equal time here the most Bizzare game I’ve been to being a Dawg was a game between Ga. Tech and Maryland. I tried to get into the game but the Tech Geeks are so impressed with their Technological feats that at the end of a play no announcement for a flag on the play or whether a 1st down was made on a close play,no, it’s a fricken Huge screen Flashing a Coca-Cola commercial with the decibal level of a “Who” concert. The fans were yelling ‘yea’ not kill the sob.I had to give up and just watch the fans.Then I hear them yell ‘Block that kick’ for a kick-off!! My brother pointed out to me there was a row of six guys wearing pocket protectors,white buttondown shirts and ties!! my God it was the Twilight Zone.I still wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat over this. Yeah, I think that Vandy and UK fans are the worst. After they beat us two years ago, they were celebrating and laughin, and it hurt my feelings. They have no right beating the mighty dawgs! Then this year, after we barely came back against vandy, we showed them by stomping on their logo. Those classless jerks deserved their logo being stomped.

This is just another example of media bias. If we’re number one in the AP and the Coaches Poll then we should also be the tops in this list. This entire thing is a joke. Can’t you fans of each school understand your simply being played like a chump. This guy does not care who he insults or if you all insult eachother. He’s going to his boss laughing, and says; look how much traffic I brought to my blog this time. We all have our good fan’s and our bad. I’ve been to every stadium in the SEC, I had a great time at each win or lose. If you enjoy the exoerience of fighting and your looking for trouble, then you will find it. I’m not sure where David went to school, but I almost completely agree with him. Bama and UGA are a tossup - otherwise he is dead on in my book. The UF fans are obnoxious on game day - just not as much the rest of the year. You say AU fans are trash talking? I haven’t really witnessed that, but what about the Bama fans? They are still talking and they have lost 6 in a row to their instate rivals. LSU - I have seen actual violence and destruction of property, multiple times, from their fans - I’m not sure that can be topped.

As a UGA alum, UGA fans are pretty bad. UF is and always will be the worst. LSU below Auburn???? The comment about getting what you pay for is stupid. UGA tickets are $10,000 plus and most of them are not classy. I almost refused to get my tickets this year because of the rapidly declining class in our fanbase.

Agree with G. P. Burdell except that I don’t think the insightful comments can be limited to Georgia fans. The fans of any SEC school with the least amount of class always seem to be the ones who didn’t go to that school.

Having said that, Mark - can’t support putting Georgia behind Auburn. I remember during my days on the Plains (78-82) a very close AU-UGA contest at Jordan Hare that Georgia won. Both teams played well and deserved to win. Georgia fans were the most obnoxious fans I’ve ever heard after the game. If you can’t win with class, you’re not a winner.

Although I am a UF fan and Grad, probably have to agree with you about having the most obnoxious fans. I think we have a good excuse though, although we are the southern most state, we have kept the least ammount of southern hospitality and courtliness of all the other SEC states, as we have been overrun by retiring yankees for generations!!! thoughts?

Who is everyone fooling on this thread? The SEC is worst, classless conf. in the nation by far. The SEC often boasts loudly that it has the best conf. because they have the most talent, the best coaches, the best overall teams, etc… but they never take into consideration that maybe their greatness is all an illusion. They often play each other relatively close in conf. games and brag about how bad they beat each other up. In my opinion they are all a bunch of nancy boys that need to strap it on and go play a conf like the PAC 10 in a close game. Last I recall, ARK got blown out by a team from the best conf in the land. Another reason the teams in the SEC are terrible is there inability to decided on what their mascots are. For example UGA started off as the goats, yeah that’s right check your own history in the 1890’s, http://www.uga.edu/ugazine/past/f2005/bulldog.html. and then went through about five other mascots before picking the bulldogs.

If you want to see some true football, try looking outside your microcosm in the southeast. Go explore the teams in the northeast, like Rutgers and teams in the soutwest like Texas. Those boys really know what tradition is all about.

I’ve come to realize that the most obnoxious fans are with whom I’m in close proximity. When I lived in West Georgia, I thought AU fans were the worst; now I thing they’re among the best. When I lived in Tennessee, I thought they were the worst. Having married a UT gal, I now just bite my tongue whenever I hear Rocky Top. Now that I live in Augusta, I’ve come to learn that Gamecock fans are the worst. They’ve never won anything, yet they believe they invented football and that SOS is going to lead them to the promise land.

I beg to differ with you, while I am a little bias being a recent former student-athlete at Florida (now living in Atlanta), I have NEVER met ruder fans than those who support UGA. On more than one occasion I have been taunted, harassed and even “spit” on by Georgia fans. Liquor bottles being thrown from buses into my sunroof while at a stop light in Jacksonville, girls running up to us screaming in our face while walking away from a loss at the stadium, and a Frat boy literally out of NOWHERE calling me obscene names and eventually spitting on me when I told him to have some class. Auburn fans on the other hand were some of the most generous host at our last game in Alabama.

Most Obnoxious Fans = AUBURN TIGER fans!!!! They urinate over the sides of the stadium. They scream nasty curse words at visitors. Well, I’m a UGA Alumnus, but I have to say that I can respect Tennessee for one incident of great valor. Some years ago—I wasn’t there, I was working—my mama was in the middle of a big crowd squeeze while walking over the bridge in front of Sanford. A big, burly Vols fan held out his arms and made a “fence” for my mama and another woman to keep them from being squashed or pushed over the railing. She was most appreciative, and I’m thankful for his strong valor and respect.

I still hate hearing “Rocky Top” though! ;)

Gotta pull L.S.U. closer to number one, Mark. Having lived in Louisiana for six years as a Georgia Bulldog, I know, first-hand, how friendly LSU fans can be, but when they get arrogant and full of themselves, they’re horrid to deal with.

Some memories that come to mind:

September 20, 2003 @ Baton Rouge. Pre-game tailgating was delicious and friendly. Folks were very respectful of Georgia fans and vice versa. Let’s remember, at this point, it’d been MANY years since LSU’d enjoyed much success on the football field.

Dude, that was an ugly scene after-the-fact, when you’re trying to leave the stadium and drunken, obnoxious locals are hurling objects and filthy words at you. Was a great game; great atmosphere, too. But those folks go from friendly to obnoxious on a dime. Living in Louisiana after that game and the ensuing SEC Championship game was damn-near misery.

Of course, it was only that much sweeter when we smoked ‘em 45-16 in Athens the following season, in Athens, then did it again in the SEC Championship in 2005.

I rode with some LSU buddies in an RV from central Louisiana to Athens for that home game, and those two were all mouth on the way, and all wound-licking on the way back, btu insistent that it was a fluke. A 29-point fluke, and they’d, of course, return the pasting in Atlanta.

We lost the following week to Tennessee (still smarting from that one, frankly), but when we did meet ‘em in Atlanta, in 2005, they were again, loud and in-your-face obnoxious.

Then we smoked ‘em 34-14.

To understand the LSU fan is to experience living in that state. There’s nothing else for those folks to hang their hats on; the state’s in disarray, the Saints will always be the Saints (though, they, too, are obnoxious fans when they experience a hint of success), and their only real claim to superiority, outside of LSU sports, is that they’re not Arkansas.

LSU has the worst fans, and it’s not even close. I used to think UF fans were bad but they dont even touch LSU. I went to Baton Rouge in 2003 and had multiple empty handles hurled my way, grandmothers spitting on me, and we didn’t even win the game. Couldnt imagine what it would have been like if we would have won.

The no. 1 obnoxious ranking for Florida fans is right on. They haven’t changed a bit since the team learned how to win (only took 60 years or so). They are the only fans I’ve seen who will brag and talk trash after their team loses. Any fans of another SEC team who has lived in Florida know what I mean. In the mid-80s, they once booed a hotshot freshman QB recruit so mercilessly after his mistakes resulted in a tie against Rutgers (back when Rutgers was still Rutgers), his career was practically over before it began.

When it comes to obnoxious SEC fans, Gators are no. 1 in the same manner that Tiger Woods is the number 1 golfer in the world - no one else is even close. Throw in the mullets, jorts, bad bleach jobs, and retired Yankees that become instant UF fans once they move to Florida, and you have an unbeatable mix.

I disagree with the Auburn ranking. I attended a game there once, and the people I ran into treated me like a visiting relative rather than an opposing fan. It was a great experience.

As for fellow Georgia fans, my experience is that we are obnoxious at the Cocktail Party, but very polite at Sanford. Not sure that deserves a no. 3 ranking. Agree that LSU fans are very hospitable.

I find it funny that Alabama is ranked high even though I didn’t see ANY Alabama fans screaming about everyone else on this thread (like everyone else is doing). ALSO…. BAMA FANS NEVER HARP ABOUT BEAR BRYANT, EVERYONE ELSE JUST INSISTS THAT THEY DO! The only people I ever hear talk about the “Bryant” days is everyone else.

Florida #1 and #2 - win or lose, no fans exhibit less class. I ahve seen it firsthand, since the 80’s (when there was a lot of losing).

South Carolina - #3

Alabama - #4

Arkansas - #5 mainly because of Petrino

TN, LSU, Auburn fans while certainly passionate seem (to me at least) to accept Bulldawg beatdowns better than others.

HAHA, if I’ve heard the c** joke once, I’ve heard it a million times. That line is so lame and played out. About as much as our “Wait till Next Year” peptalks. But call it what you will…even when we went 0-21 in 2season, Williams Brice was still a packed house!

UGA fans are by far the most delusional and obnoxious! Not to mention they have the biggest band wagon of fans. Its easy to be a Bulldog when things are going good, but I’ve come across my share of UGA fans who were quick to toss the team under the bus when they couldn’t beat a lousy Gamecock team last year. LOL.

Here’s to a repeat in Columbia!

here’s a little unbiased view for you. I’ve seen all 12 schools in action and i’ve experienced all the fans. Obviously all of the fans aren’t like this. The worst are uga fans. They’re obnoxious, drunk, and violent (throw quarters at the opposing fans from the upper deck). Next is LSU. Same qualities except they seem to have more fans that redeem the others. Next is UT (never been flipped off so much in my life) then auburn (way to obnoxious to have never won consistently), florida (bad sports), alabama (I don’t think they’re inconsequential but some are too attached to the past and the sweet home alabama thing is annoying), arkansas (calling the hogs), MSU (cowbells), south carolina (that horrible gamecock call over the loudspeaker), ole miss, kentucky and finally vandy. That’s how the list should look.

LSU is No. 1 with a bullet.

You are way off on this. LSU fans can cook, but their “normal” is Bourbon Street. Auburn’s normal is Toomer’s Corner. There’s a huge difference in community norm and acceptable behavior.

Today, the list should be: LSU, Bama, Fla, Georgia, Tennessee - if Bama starts winning again move them up a spot. Same thing with Tennessee.

Maybe I’d put Auburn, Ole Miss, and Miss State in the next group. The rest are totally tame.

Florida experience: First, it was a lot of fun. Two-bits doing his thing, the crowd is ear-splitting loud, and the fans are passionate about their team. I have to give credit where credit is due in that regard. But they are obnoxious almost beyond description.

I attended a UF-Ga. Southern game there once. It was probably in the late 80s or early 90s. Florida won of course, but Ga. Southern was very competitive. Final score was something like 38-21. I rode with a friend who had FSU stickers on his car, and when we were looking for parking, we drove by a tailgating family, all decked out in Orange and Blue. They looked like the perfect middle-class family enjoying a picnic on a college football Saturday. The idealic scene was shattered when the daughter, who was probably 12 or 13-yrs. old, showed us her middle finger. The dad saw her do it, and just laughed. That’s UF fans in a nutshell.

My disclaimers:

Huge UGA fan, but I’m an actual alum, and avoid Wal-Mart like the plague.

Have never been to another stadium, so I only have blog posts and visiting fans in Athens to go by.

I really am sorry that other SEC fans have such a negative view of us. I have tried to be as hospitable as I can be at games. I had to sit in the visitor’s section at the S. Carolina game last year, and hopefully will never have to repeat that experience again. I admit that we do have fans that drink a lot (my brother’s best friend - also alum - especially), but he’s the fun, happy kind of drunk.

Is there really a degree of drunkenness that you don’t experience at other SEC stadiums? I thought that was what SEC tailgating is known for, that and great food, of course. Since I’m actually allergic to alcohol, I promise I’m not one of the obnoxious, drunk fans. You can come up to me and say hi. I won’t be mean, well maybe to the Gator and Vols fans, I just really have an adverse reaction to the color orange.

My two cents on Auburn is that they generally are okay. This is one rivalry that I truly, truly enjoy. The games are always competitive, no real advantage being a home game, and it’s usually down to the wire. I remember I was babysitting my best friend’s little girl a few years ago, when Auburn won in Athens by one point. I had to keep my screaming to a whisper so as not to wake her up. Also, Auburn usually beats the other teams that we need them to beat, so plus for them there.

LSU fans I’ve encountered were always cool with me too. No real problems with the SEC West in general. It’s definitely the East teams and not Vandy and Kentucky. You can fill in the other three on your own.

I agree that MSU, KU and Vandy should be at the bottom of the list but that is b/c there fans are irrelevant. But to rank Auburn and Georgia ahead of LSU, BAMA and Tennessee is just absurd.
The last time i checked, when a team came into auburn or UGA, fans weren’t shaking or throwing rocks at the buses like they do at LSU. OH yeah, and as for Alabama, all they do is talk about a dead coach(bear bryant) and how many national championships they have won. that gets annoying!

I had to remove any Auburn stickers from my car before driving to LSU for the game for fear that it may be vandalized. NOT UNCOMMON at LSU! Also, while living on The Hill (girls dormitories) in Auburn, Tennessee fans would get there the Tuesday before the game and begin blaring Rocky Top. Tennessee and LSU would have to be tied for most obnoxious.

For what it’s worth, an old Air Force buddy of mine who’s a Colorado alum working in Atlanta attended the UGA-CU game two years ago. He and his wife were dressed in CU black and gold, and he says they were treated good by the home crowd. Even invited to have a beer with some Georgia fans a time or two.

BTW, I’m a dog alum and I know we are obnoxious, I’ve never met a winning SEC fan base (in any sport) that wasn’t. Clearly we have work to do though as #3 just won’t cut it. We know we are the best!

Everyone in the college football world knows the most obnoxious fans are UGA fans. Every national poll on this topic always has them in the top 3.

First of all, Coach Tuberville doesn’t brag all the time about beating Alabama. He knows that is important to keep his job and he reminds people that he’s done it 6 years straight. Secondly, he broke out the “seven” fingers in Iraq because he was being egged on by Auburn AND Alabama fans serving our country. He and Richt were there giving some “normalcy” to the lives of our true heroes overseas. As for Auburn fans, those that live in Alabama have to put up with all Alabama all the time media coverage, while trying to find news to slander Auburn AND a delusional fan base that acts like they’ve beat us for the last 6 years AND the second coming happened when they hired the GREAT Sabear. Give me a break. #1 is still Alabama & #2 is LSU. Those people vandalized visitors cars and threaten the safety of the visiting fans, esp. if it’s a night game.

Oh, ask non-conf opponenents how Auburn is. A Syracuse writer wrote a phenomenal article and the USC fans that came down in ‘03 loved the campus (even prior to the game).

You have a right to your opinion, but I think you are off.

I grew up in Atlanta but I am an Auburn girl so that #2 ranking stung a little bit. Until I realized that this is totally subjective. I have had full bottles of liquor thrown at my head and been told off by a three year old for not being an LSU fan while his mom and dad egged him on in Baton Rouge, Auburn had to change tailgate rules after UF destroyed the campus in ‘93 when we beat them, and don’t even get me started on how I was treated in Athens… and my best experience has been with Bama fans! Auburn has had multiple news sources inside and outside of SEC country write articles about how gracious the fans are. I’ll take that any day.

WE all spent the 90’s watching you guys shamelessly running up the score whenever possible. There is a truth to the saying, “if you don’t like it, do something about it.” We couldn’t do much about it at the time so it sounded pretty ridiculous when we complained about it.

Now though watching the Gator Nation’s collective outrage and the non-stop complaining over the end-zone stunt is hilarious. You had approximately 55 minutes to do something about it last year. You didn’t because you couldn’t. Shut the f up and deal with it!

As a middle aged transplant from Big 12 country, I’ve had the opportunity to attend games in Auburn, Knoxville, Birmingham (Ala), Columbia, Baton Rouge and Athens. It’s not even close. Georgia fans are the most dispicable on the planet. From throwing bottles at the oppositions fans, to keying cars, to urinating off the top deck they take the cake of being the most obnoxious. They thrive on gang or herd mentality, picking on individuals or smaller groups. When they themselves are seperated out, they tuck their tails like wounded prey and run off like cowards. Whomever coined the phrase “Wal-Mart UGa fans” nailed it. 85% of the trash that attend their homegames, who run their mouth, never stepped foot on the campus to attend a single class. And they generally smell of like corndogs.

When publications have made this a matter of polls including the entire nation, UGA always comes out on top with the most offensive and obnoxious fans. The only consolation that UGA can take is that most of their fans have never set foot on campus. Alcohol is no excuse for rude, boorish behavior.

And, in the ACC, VPI comes out on top with the most obnoxious fans.

I would have to agree with the Auburn girl. While there always always drunk fans that are obnoxious at any school (seems my Athens is at the top), I think Auburn has some of the classiest fans. I must say the Baton Rogue has got to be the WORST haven for obnoxious fans that are violent. We visit there this year, and I’m sure there will be lots of fights just because it’s LSU fans involved. It’s too bad Katrina didn’t wipe that town off the map.

Since I’m a Florida fan, I can’t rank UF. I don’t doubt that we’re in the top 3, though.

3: Georgia - Maybe it’s because UF / UGA is an emotional rivalry, but I just can’t stand how the majority of UGA fans thing their team is the greatest team ever to walk on the field. They are annually overrated, especially this year - the juniors and seniors on this year’s team lost to Vandy at HOME and bareley beat them last year (not to mention the classes act of jumping on the “V” after squeaking one out against the SEC doormat). Tell me, UGA fans - how many National Championships has UGA won in the past 25 years?

2: Tennessee - Rocky Top. Over and over and over again. Confrontational fans. Hard to say more, but at least they have a right: they’ve won an National Championship in the past 25 years.

1: Alabama - I can not believe how outright awful these fans are. They easily take #1 in my book. I watched first hand in Tuscaloosa as a bunch of drunk tailgating Bammers (who didnt have tickets to the game) knocked over a 65+ year old man for wearing the wrong school’s colors. And they have that lovely way of insulting you without insulting you…”Well, y’all had Spurrier and we had Bear, and you KNOW there will just never be another Bear!” Bear is dead, get over it. (PS UGA Fans: Even Bama has won a National Championship in that past 25 years…)

Has this guy even seen any SEC games?

In my experience:

1) A MSU fan came up and screamed in my wife’s face after a game in Starkville, another tried to start a fight with my brother at another game in Starkville, great fans.

2) Was cussed at and had a bottle thrown in my general direction at LSU, easily the drunkest fans in the SEC. A lot of fun after the game though.

3) Was spit on in Tuscaloosa by an errant shot by a UA fan while walking next to a UT fan. Probaby the lowest class thing I have witnessed, I am sure the late Bear Bryant would not have sanctioned spitting on the opposition. But as they would have to read that now, how are they to find that out?

4) I have been obnoxious at Auburn, but never rude to opposing teams fans, that shows no class. I am also proud of the way AU fans stick with our team no matter the score, we don’t leave (unless Rammer Jammer is coming).

5) Dominating UA is something that those of us who grew up in the 70’s needed, saying we are like they were must be because now we are the ones winning. We will get it back one day, but for right now, the State of Alabama is our house and we will let you know.

6) Ole Miss has great, easy going fans. A trip to Oxford is a lot of fun.

7) UGA has great fans, they love football Saturday’s and in my experience, like AU they will party with anyone, been there when we lost one and when we won one, great fans both times.

8)I have not been to the swamp, but if thier traveling fans are any indication what a bunch of dopes. There sweat suits are second only to UT’s orange clad nightmare and they act like they have been winning forever. Hey UF, before Coach Hall, you were Vanderbilt, try and find that thing called sportsmanship.

9) No trips to Knoxville either, but outside of the prison issued suits every one of them seem to wear to the games I have seen, they are ok.

That is my litte opinion.

As kids we used to put two ants in an empty soda bottle, shake them up and watch them go at it. Nice idea for an article, and its always good to hear opinions about SEC fans.

However, you have LSU WAY to low. LSU should be top 3. While Florida fans are cocky, and UGA may be drunk, but LSU fans are SCARY. These are the folks that will get in a fight with you for wearing the wrong colors around their stadium.

I know beat writers for UGA who will not wear Dawg colors until the day of the game when they travel to LSU. Now that’s homefield advantage!

LSU should be closer to the top of the list. The gene pool in Florida produces an unusually high percentage of trailer park/red neck riviera trash which is evident anytime you attend a game at the swamp. I’m not convinced you’ve ever spent any time on-campus either. Most radio programs make jabs at Auburn for not calling in and making more cracks on Bama and bragging when we’re doing well. Or, questioning why Auburn fans are so quiet about it all. You could not have spent any decent amount of time with Auburn folks if this is truly what you think. UGA has the most obnoxious, rude, immature and rabid fans ever. I have seen them intimidate small children because the kids were wearing Tech t-shirts. Heck the kids were so small they didn’t even know what kind of shirts they were wearing but these ‘men’ taunted them while their terrified mother backed out of the store. I went to talk to her and she was fearful of her and her children’s safety, she was shaking and her children were crying. The thing is she wasn’t even from around here, the shirts were given to them by a friend and it was just something to wear ! I also have a sister who had just moved here from Florida, she’s not a fan of any team but had some old t-shirts in the rag bin she used for painting. She had to run to the Walmart in Athens for more brushes. It was a Florida gator t-shirt so old and faded and covered in paint she didn’t think anything of it went to Walmart and was accosted by some UGA guy with his fat wife in the parking lot. My sis didn’t know why this guy came stomping up to her telling her to take the ‘shirt off and turn it inside out’ she was in shock and just stood there looking at this moron and his smiling one toothed wife like they were nuts, which of course they were. Anyway the guy told her several times to take the shirt off and to never wear anything like that in athens again or she’d pay. My sis is standing wondering what the heck he’s screaming at her about so she just backed away and went on in to walmart, shaken up. I told her she might could have called the athens cops but they would have been on that morons side and she would have probably been arrested for threatening him! I went to UGA and am proud of the school but these rabid fans are an embarassment, NEVER are UGA fans treated like that when we go to other schools to play and although Tech is our rival I have to admit that when my family goes to a game there all decked out in UGA stuff we never get bashed or attacked. I am almost ashamed to admit I did graduate from UGA as its ridiculous the way the majority of the fans there treat others.

I for one agree with Mark Bradley. the FLORIDA GATOR fans are by far the most obnoxious in the SEC. They are also very willing to help a coach with thousands of dollars in cash when he needs to recruit some blue chip athletes. When I was head coach at Florida we were able to supply every scholarship football player with his very on sporty car and thow in a few thousand dollars of cash for each. The faculty was very helpful when one of our Gators needed a passing grade to keep him eligible. I loved Florida. Of course the NCAA did put us on probation and called it one of the worst cases of cheating in NCAA history. I was very proud of that as was every Gator.

After Gator fans I would rank Auburn second. Their school has received the most NCAA probation of any in the history of the SEC. Their fans are all alcoholics, scream the vilest cuss words and like to start fights. Tennessee Volunteer fans are third most obnoxious in the SEC. I’d rank them higher but they can’t read or write. They can cook up a ton of great dishes using possum meat and boy do Volunteer fans love possum. Evidently, possum rots the teeth, as very few Tennessee fans has a whole set of teeth unless they’re dentures. Tennessee fans consistently show a great lack of class. And Rocky Top is a gay rights activist fight song!

I graduated in 1980 before north end of the stadium was enclosed and the railroad tracks were exposed. In those days we had a cheer that went… “What’s that coming down the track? The big machine, the Red and Black; Ain’t nothing finer in the land; Than a drunk, obnoxious Georgia Fan; Go Dawgs, Go Dawgs…”

We thought we were obnoxious (and proud of it) so I assume the rest of the Conference must have thought the same.

Having grown up in Florida I can attest to the fact that anyone from Florida knows that the University of Florida is where all the rednecks go. Mark Bradley is right on about Gator fans. They are the most obnoxious around. They are poor winners, sore losers and worst of all have no class whatsoever. How so many kids from trailer parks can attend college is beyond me? And they never advance very for in life either. There is disproportionate number of U. of Florida grads in Florida prisons. They are the worst kind of drunks possible and there are a tremendous amount of fights at their football games. Gators are just low class and that’s all there is to it.

As a dawg who once lived in Louisiana - the only team that can out-do UF in being obnoxious is LSU. The only difference is that LSU fans typically know about football - can’t say that about UF. And for anyone who has not enjoyed a football game at Tiger Stadium as an opposing fan on a Saturday night - then you have no idea what harassment is all about.

While LSU may have it’s share of obnoxious fans, the bulk are of the “Wal-Mart” or “sidewalk” variety as defined below. All schools are equally guilty of having this unwanted fan base. I’ve had bad experiences at Georgia & Tennessee, simply for the reason they put us next to the student section…but I’d expect such. Kentucky fans kept screaming stuff about “finishing what Katrina started”, but of course these individuals didn’t appear to have graduated high school, much less UK. Outside the SEC is no different, I’ve been to LSU-A&M games at Kyle Field when I was a child and spit on by “trailer park specials” wearing wife beaters. Point is, these rankings like the associated comments, are meaningless…here are the facts: Bear Bryant is dead, UGA didn’t win their division so didn’t deserve to play for a national championship in ’07, and LSU has two crystal eggs…see you in Baton Rouge!!!

Have to agree with you about Florida. I went to a I-AA school (Indiana State University) and by some quirk of the schedule, we ended up playing U-F AT Gainesville…yikes.

Florida was ranked 5th in the nation at the time. Predictions were U-F 55, ISU 0. Final Score? U-F 17, ISU 13. We barely made it out of Gainesville alive. I was in the flag corps with the marching band and the U-F fans lined the route back to our buses after the game. We kept our flag poles diagonally across the front of our bodies and kept U-F fans from “breaking” our ranks. We got pelted with oranges and ice.

I was terrified.

This is a football only comment, not talking about other sports. UGA football is a 2 lose team at best and will never be anymore. I went to an Auburn-Miss. State game at Auburn as a neutral observer with some friends. I saw Auburn fans cuss the Miss. State fans and throw drinks and bottles at them. All game long Auburn fans verbally abused the few Miss. State fans that attended. When we got back to the car 6 Auburn fans were beating up 2 Miss. State fans. The 2 Miss. State guys were smallish guys about 19 or 20 years old. The 6 Auburn guys were all large guys over 6 feet tall and looked to be upper 20s and early 30s. They beat those 2 guys senseless. 6 on 2 is just so brave and macho isn’t it? I never want to hear an Auburn fan make the false claim that they have class and dignity. I would say in the south that Georgia and Clemson has the most obnoxious fans anywhere hands down. When these two teams played each other in the 80s they were really obnoxious to each other. Clemson really give Fla. State fans heck too. Just like UGA fans and the Gator fans are obnoxious to each other. Hey Mark… The most loyal fans in the conference hands down are Gamecock fans, unlike the fair weather fans of UGA!

For professional sports (irregardless the sport) the worst fans are from Philly.

Besides the Flyers, the worst fans in hockey are for the Toronto Maple LEAVES and the Sabres. Leaves fans seem to forgot that 1967 was an awful long time ago. Sabres fans are mostly bandwagon jumpers that hopped on when they were winning. One more season like last year and Sabres “fans” will help put the team back in bankruptcy.

Hmmm, I like this list. But a few things— I’m no Bama fan, but I don’t see how they are now irrelevant, they had a #1 recruiting class and are a preseason top 25 team.

Second, LSU fans. The fact they are not #1 is odd. The fact they are so low is shocking. You’ll never meet a more drunk, obnoxious fan base in the entire world.

Third, good call on Georgia. While I enjoy going to games in Athens as much as the next person, let’s be real. Most UGA fans never went to school there, and therefore the abundance of rednecks are going to be there. They don’t act like they’re in college Mark, it’s impossible since they never went there. (My apologizes to those that did.)

I’d say LSU is most obnoxious. The LSU fans that I hung around when tailgaiting there a few years ago were fun because our UGA group had mutual friends, but the rest of their fans were super obnoxious and threw any object they could at UGA fans after beating the Dawgs. They are ok when your team isn’t playing them though.

UGA and old men acting like college students is the best part!

I don’t find Bama or Auburn as bad as they are credited for. Tennessee should be higher than both.

That said, all the fans are great and obnoxious with the exception of the least successfull football schools - Miss. St., Vandy, Kentucky, etc

What’s obnoxious is being a fan of an ACC team and speaking about them like they are a good team!!

I am a Dawg (class of ‘92) and I must say, sadly, that we’re just the worst. I worked in the service industry when I was younger, so I have seen them all… at their worst. Having written that, I must admit that I am not blameless. Why as recently as last season while crossing the bridge after just exiting the Stadium following the Auburn blackout game, I said rather too loudly to my friend (as well as anyone else within earshot), “Man, oh, man. How much does this suck?! After getting stomped like that, to then have to drive back to Alabama!” Oh, well. There goes my glass house. I told you that we’re the worst. I would have rated 2-12 in order of most jerks to still-plenty-of-jerks-just-not-as-many-as-the-schools-listed-ahead thusly: Auburn, LSU, Florida South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Miss State.

Dawg fans and Gator fans are the worst. I worked for CBS for 17years as a camera man. Win or Loose the best fans in the SEC are without a doubt at LSU. I personally root for the gators. I have had beer and who know what else thrown, spat at me from fans of all ages at both places. Dawgs get ready for yet another runer up or worst finish in the east. Let’s not discount South Carolina just because they have NEVER won a football champiosnhip of any kind. Even Vanderbilt has a better history than the ‘Cocks. True ‘C** fans are loyal to their team. You just can’t hide stupid, though! South Carolina fans are just as obnoxious drunk rednecks as any. In fact South Carolina may lead in the highest percentage of sloppy drunks who pass out cold at football games, with Tennessee as a close second. South Carolina fans are still poor losers even though they’ve had a century of practice. They never had enough winning seasons in their history to judge whether or not they are good winners. They’ve won less than 30 games against their two biggest rivals in the last 110 years while losing over 100. ‘Cocks have the worst inferiority complex in the entire NCAA and why not, they’ve earned it.

As an Alabama fan and alumni I can tell you the two most obnoxious and unruly group of fans to visit Tuscaloosa are Tennessee and LSU. They’ve proved themselves to be classless, obnoxious rednecks over and over again. The two best fans from winning tradition schools to visit Tuscaloosa are Florida and Georgia. The fans of those schools have shown a lot class as a group when they’ve come to Tuscaloosa. I truly hate Auburn as an institution but their fans, though I hate to admit it, are much classier than Tennesse and LSU.

Auburn fans have never been anything but gracious to us at games and in general contact. GT has a long history with Auburn and that makes it all the more fun! Sad that our in state rivals haven’t taken a page from their book…

I would never take my 12 year old to a game against UGAg because of the dispicable behavior I have seen at Tech/Georgia games (in ATL and in Athens). It is sad when a grown man thinks that it is acceptable for him to bark and spit at an elderly woman just because she is wearing old gold and white. I feel bad for many of the UGA fans (mostly alum) that I personally know who are embarrassed at the bandwagon fans that give their school a bad name.

From experience - football is a very passionate sport - all of the schools have their obnoxious, over the top fans.

you can pretty much mix and match…no difference as they all are the same.

However, Florida and LSU can take home field advantage to a new level - not just talking about how loud the stadiums are - which both can absolutely bring int the noise - but I am talking about smack talking and being obnoxious.

However again - it’s all about sustained winning - Tennessee and Florida were both tied for #1 when they both were perenial top 10.

LSU has replaced Tennessee - and Georgia is starting to separate from the pack to join LSU and Florida.

I am a relative of the late Paul “Bear” Bryant, but grew up in Georgia, only met him as a baby so I do not remember him. But football is in my blood and I love my Georgia Bulldogs, even though I moved to Florida in 1989, ever since I met the great Coach Vince Dooley. You all can say what you want about the fans of the SEC but you cannot deny their loyalty and we are all not trashy or drunks. I have been here among the Gator fans and must say they are the most irritating, whining bunch of fans I have ever met. I do not agree with the ranking of his poll except with the number 1 position.

This is awful. Mississippi State last? Have you ever had to sit and listen to that annoying cowbell racket for three hours? Didn’t those get outlawed several years back?

Auburn 2nd is laughable. Alabama only 4th is just as bad. Rocky Top alone puts Tennessee in the top 2 or 3. Florida’s jean shorts and jersey-wearing fans make them a great top pick. South Carolina is only mildly annoying because they always think the next year is the one. Kentucky and Vandy are just Kentucky and Vandy - how can anyone pick on them?

Ole Miss, Georgia, Auburn aren’t really annoying. They have some annoying fans, but everyone does. Nothing over the top with these three. Here are my rankings:

I have been to all these places as well. The worst was Athens where beer was thrown on us, hit in the head with a program at halftime, & had our car beaten on as we were leaving the stadium. The best experience was at Notre Dame when we did not take our band. At the end of the game, the Notre Dame band marched over to our fans & played the Alabama fight song.

Auburn fans are the worst and very fair weathered. I worked security at the games and they swear they are better than everyone else. The faculty used to try and sneak stuff into the games and when I caught them they would whine and cry saying they were teachers like I would give them a pass. Then u have to hear WAr Eagle screamed more than Rocky top is played for Tennessee. They give a way tickets when they dont play anybody great which is usely four or five games a year because nobody wants to see the games. I saw a player spit on opposing fans and they hosed down opposing fans at least once. Auburn is trash!!!!!!!!!!! End of Story

Being a GA grad and season ticket holder for 34 yrs, Mark is not far off in his ranking of Dawg fans, but his reasoning is bad. I also have been to all of the SEC venues. Everybody drinks and Ga fans dont drink anymore than anyone else. The real reason people think GA fans are obnoxious (and I do not consider myself in this category) is that a lot of my fellow GA fans tend to act like we Dawgs invented college football. Also it is hard not be a little smug about how cool Athens is compared to everywhere else.

on the other rankings Fla def #1..but in my mind Auburn fans are not bad..the Tenn fans are much worse. totally agree about LSU and SC. Re;Alabama..I never minded their superiority complex because until the last 10 yrs, it was warranted. Mark - overall I agree with you.

As a student I hated it when all these drunk rednecks - who have no affiliation to the school except maybe living in the state - somehow found their way to campus on game days. They certainly shouldn’t have been driving there.

I’m a pretty big dude, but nothing is scarier than a drunk, obnoxious redneck UGA fan on campus on game day. Surprisingly, it’s even worse after a UGA win. Seriously, they only hurt the reputation of UGA fans.

Other than that Tech fans are not at all intimidating. There are not many of them and none are physically impressive.

Auburn has the scariest fans. Thery have a lot of big south Alabama farm boy types that look like they’ve been in and out of jail alot. I have lived in Georgia for 27 of my 31 years and I love Alabama football. I used to think that Florida had the rudest fans until Georgia, after finally going somewhere, decided to play some real football in Athens. Now all I hear is “How ‘bout them dawgs?”. It used to be that the only Georgia fans you found were the ones in the nursing homes and the ones who vaguely remember their one National Title in 1980. I know that Alabama fans can be bad too, I realize this, but we have always had a fan base. even through the last 10 years when we have just plain sucked bad, you could always find loyal fans. Georgia fans come and go but Bama will remain. I am ready for them to go because they think they are God’s gift to football. And to the blogger who made the comment about Bear Bryant and our National Titles…people are always jealous of things they never had or can’t get.

Tennesse and Florida are the most obnoxious in the SEC. They have the highest percentage of trashy rednecks. Florida fans are really bad about fighting. Tennesse fans don’t usually get violent but scream obscenities at you from afar. Both Florida and Tennesse fans are mostly sloppy nasty staggering drunks.

And several posters have alluded to Tennessee fans as being fat. I’ve noticed this, too. Volunteer fans on the whole are a very fat bunch. WOW!

I have also noticed that Gator fans sport the most tattoos and have to agree that a lot of them wear mullets.

Couldn’t agree more with the sentiment that (many, not all) GA fans take classlessness to a whole new level. I’ve been to one game involving Georgia, when they played at Clemson in the mid 90’s. When a drunk middle-aged man threw a Jim Beam bottle at my head, it cemented my opinion that these were the most ill-mannered and embicilic lot of them all. For the record, I was just a 12-year-old kid at that game. Takes big cojones for a grown man to start crap with a kid. Anyhow, I’m off my soapbox for the rest of the day. Y’all take care.

From a die-hard AU fan. Let’s be honest, we ALL have obnoxious fans. I vividly recall two Auburn games I attended (one in Austin against UT & 2004 Sugar Bowl) where AU students were drunk and obnoxious.

In Austin two under aged jerks spilled beer on my girlfriend and used profane words all night long. Another group tried to pick a fight with a VT fan in the Super Dome. I was embarrassed not to mention a little pizzed at the way they acted in front of my son. I got all in to these kids stuff about how they are making fools of themselves and embarrassed Auburn. They spilled beer all over my new camera. They toned it down eventually when the police escorted two of them out. And I gladly pointed them out.

None of that compares to the crap I have been exposed to in Baton Rouge. LSU fans #1 - are the absolute worse. There is not enough space here to talk about my experiences with them. #2 - Bama fans. Wake up. Your beloved team doesn’t rule anymore. Close 2nd - Arkansas. 4th - UF but the cut offs don’t bother me lol!

something about mullet heads and cut off jeans is just dead wrong unless your a flordia fan than its just normal. But why are we arguing about this why not just talk about how georgia is going to beat everyone they play this year. oh yeah remember florida fans wiil send you post cards from miami and will charge the field and celebrate in the endzone just for yall.

I am from Columbus and I think you have mistaken your description of AU fans with how thUGA fans act here. I have seen more Florida alumni stickers here (one actually) than thUGA alumni stickers on cars. Most thUGA fans pull for them because it’s their state. Just like most UAT fans in Alabama. We like to call them sidewalk alumni.

UA-Tuscaloosa has to be #1. Any fanbase that cheers “Rammer Jammer, we just beat the h3ll outta you” after beating a winless Duke team and Alabama took the lead late in the third quarter has to be the most obnoxious in the conference.

As a UGA alum, I hate to admit it, but that list strikes me as pretty fair. I think that most alum and students are fine, but some fans seem to forget that UGA is not a NFL team.

That being said, God help us all if Spurrier ever wins the conference at South Carolina. Those fans are poised to take the title of World’s most obnoxious—I think that they could compete with some European soccer hooligans in terms of ridiculousness.
