This blog has moved! Yes, already!

As of Thursday, Feb. 12, this little blog has relocated to a new home on AJC.com. It’s the same newspaper, the same Web site and the same writer (feel free to groan) — there’s just a new URL.

New features: Bigger type, more graphics, comments that load 10 times faster and a larger and more recent photo that makes me look pretty doggone old. I think you’ll like it (the blog, not the photo). But I am, as we know too well, often wrong.

Bradley’s Football Free-For-All: Send YOUR Dogs, Tech, Falcons picks!

Let’s try something. I’d like to see if my football predictions are, as has been suggested, totally detached from the consensus. I’d like it if you kind folks would provide, via the convenient mechanism of Web posting, the number of regular-season games you believe each of these teams — Georgia, Georgia Tech and the Falcons — will win.

I’m not trying to make anybody look silly. (Honest.) I’m just curious as to what everyone thinks.

Being a good sport, I’ll go first. (You don’t need to be this detailed in your forecasts, but I hate making predictions without specifics.)

Georgia will win 11 games, losing at Auburn.

Tech will win seven, losing at Boston College, at Virginia Tech, at Clemson, at North Carolina and at Georgia. (Yes, this means I think the Jackets will beat both Florida State and Miami here.)

The Falcons will win five, beating Detroit, Kansas City, Carolina and St. Louis here and beating Oakland there.

That would make 23 regular-season wins in all. I suspect I’m somewhat more optimistic than most of you, but I don’t know that for sure. That’s why I’m asking.

So please post your picks, and I’ll compare yours to mine. And I’ll also check back at season’s end and see who came the closest, in terms of total victories, to reality.

And who knows? Maybe this little exercise will turn into another Final Four Fiasco.

How does the Fall Free-For-All sound?

I grew up a Dawg fan, went to Ga. Southern and my daughter is going to Tech, where, lo and behold a beloved former GSU coach now leads the Jackets.

I think Georgia could win them all, if, they really focus and get off to a strong start. Rythm is important.

I’m thinking Tech wins eight and its bowl game. Paul Johnson is not Chan Gailey.

And, finally, down in Statesboro, Chris Hatcher progresses in year two to nine or 10 wins.

As for the Falcons, the current coach, GM and roster reminds me of 1977, Leeman Bennett’s debut. Mike Smith and the Birds go 8-8. Heck, with any breaks they could have won seven last year.

Falcons win 4. I don’t know who they’ll beat. Hell, they might lose ‘em all, which would be fine by me. That’ll be a better draft position.

No one knows how many games ANY team will win. First……if Georgia played legitimate teams early in the schedule, as USC and Ohio State do, you could have an ounce of respect for their program. As it stands now, their schedule is designed and groomed to play “nobodies” the first 3 to 4 weeks, and………the NCAA allows such nonsense. Pathetic.

A preseason look back at superbowl 42:

ODE TO ELI

It doesn’t take much to make me happy. When you stay hungry, everything tastes good. But I do need a quarterback.

When I first saw Eli Manning I was suprised. Peyton has a brother in the NFL? I gave up on him many times. (Flashes of brilliance, too gangly, and way too many interceptions). But he never gave up on me and I said yes under an unretracted roof in Phoenix last Superbowl sunday.

Outlined against a blue grey curtain of certain and sudden death, Eli slipped the surly grasp of the blitz. He wheeled and flung and did a hundred things I’ve only dreamed of. His oval soared long and delirious over tangled arms and teeth clenched in hate. Once more into the breech he joined the tumbling mirth and offered a wounded desperation that a wide-out held on to like it was the Lombardi Trophy.

The next thing you know, Burress fakes the post, and son I got High Fives way down low, low, low…..

No, it doesn’t take much to make me happy. Not much at all.

THE END

Go Dawgs!! (but they only win 9 games) Go Falcons!! (but they only win 6 games)

Go Tech! (but they only win 5 games)

Eli in a repeat of the superbowl ring!! That’s a guarantee. We havent’ seen the likes of Eli in ages. Wait’ll they get a load of him this year.

Pete,

Are you insane? Have you lost your mind? You’re an idiot!!! Georgia plays two easy games at the beginning of the season, one of which is Central Michigan who has a great QB and beat Purdue in a bowl game last year, you lose respect for them? They play the toughest schedule in the nation. Congrats to USC and Ohio St. for playing each other in week 2 instead of week 4, when we play Arizona St. They dont play even close to our schedule after that.

People like you shouldn’t be allowed to post nonsense like that on this board.

Pipe dreams! I don’t know what you mutts are smoking, but it must be strong.

UGA - 10 wins with one or two losses (schedule is too tough, and they really need to tighten-up and focus)

GT - 6 wins (any undiscipline team will lose to Tech, regardless of the talent differential — VT, Miami, FSU, and possibly UGA)

Falcons - unless this team makes strong showings in the first two games the ship will sink quickly. A reasonable guess would be 4; however given that we have NO interior players, no TE, and very young corners… winning no more than 2 games could be a strong possibility.

Georgia disappoints a bit (sigh), winning 9, with losses to a very irritated Fla, LSU, and a surprise close loss early at SC.

Tech wins five, maybe six if the kids play solid defense and adjust quickly enough to what Paul Johnson wants to do.

The Falcons? The fewer wins, the better frankly. This team needs a couple or three very good drafts back to back. Still a little disappointed they chose Ryan over Dorsey this year, but if Ryan can avoid David Carr’s fate can stay on his feet, he’ll be a good one down the road. Three wins this year (Detroit, KC, Carolina once), and one of the top two picks in the draft. It’ll be interesting to see how they play that- take a Michael Crabtree at WR (not necessary if Robinson Douglas and White are playmakers), or perhaps Michael Oher to give them the start of a dominant offensive line, shifting Baker to RT? Trade down, and stock up on draft picks? Dimitroff will have another interesting set of decisions to make next spring. Wouldn’t surprise me a bit to see Stafford jump after this year, allowing Dimitroff to auction off his pick to the highest bidder.

I am a UGA fan and while we could lose to as many as 8 teams we play we are also able to run the table which is what I will pick them to do which is 14 wins with SEC title and BCS Title

I also am not a Tech hater but I am not big on the Paul Johnson style. That said the ACC is horrible and I think they can win 8 and the bowl game to make 9.

The Falcons are not as bad as some think. The oline is better, the runnin game is better, the LB are better, the WR are improved, the coaching is better, and the secondary is worse but less arrogant with the loss of ME-Hall. Falcons win 6.

the eagles will be coming to join those so-called ‘big boys’ in athens on august 30. last time we were there, there were about 85000 very quiet people for most of the game. the other 10000 were southern fans.

remind me again what your first string offense was doing on the field with less than 2 minutes to go in the 4th quarter…maybe it was because we came up there and stood toe to toe with you and the game was just too close for comfort. and that was without our leading rusher for the entire game after the opening series.

uga fans, for some reason, need a lesson in humility. i don’t know why…it’s not like you have won anything in the past 27 years. and it’s going to be a long fall from the top this year.

Dogs are a very good team but face an absolutely brutal schedule. There might be some payback from the Gators this year given the bad blood created by the Dogs last year.

By Tim

August 7, 2008 10:22 AM | Link to this

Uncle Johnny must be in a retirement home with his brain on life support to think the Dawgs will lose 7 games. Do i think they will go undefeated probably not but they do have a real shot at it as well as winning the SEC and National Championship.

As far as players in handcuffs yes we had a few young players mess up which is not good but it is players who probably would not have contributed this year anyway and they are being delt with.

As far as Georgia Tech and the Falcons it is anyone’s guess.

I cannot wait for August 30th to come to see UGA start a possible National Championship Season. It will be tuff with the schedule they have but it should be exciting.

OK so most of all I am a foot ball fan! And Mark I think you are pretty close!

GEORGIA: I have read a ton of articles, seen a lot of footage and closely watched the growth of this team. Anyone who sits here and can really say that UGA is going to only win 8 or 9 games, really doesnt know anything about college football. This team has what it takes to run the table. I agree with Mark that the Auburn game will be tough, but my USF BULLS showed last year that they have weaknesses. I also think the LSU game will be tough. I have always been a believer that you are the champion till someone knocks you off! I think UGA season comes down to the UF game. I also think there are going to be alot of people arrested in Jacksonville that Saturday! Dawgs squeek out a close on KM ability to control the ball late in the 4th quarter. So my prediction for UGA…. 12 and 0 and living up to the hype!

GEORGIA TECH: For the jackets its gonna be a tough year. Learning the new system will be very trying. I think Mark is right again with his picks but I think they loose to FSU and upset UM at home. That makes them 6 and 6 and because of the following and heritage of GT,that gives them a bowl game around th 20th of December.

FALCONS: I could sit here and type for days, but I will spare all the everyday bloggers here. I think they arent going to be as bad as everyone thinks. Some lucky breaks, hustle, strong leadership and growth as young players will probably win 6 to 7 games for the Falcons. They wont be blow outs, they wont dominate games, they will probably not have any probowlers, but the Falcons could find themselves winning a few games late with a 40 yarder from Jason Elam. And if I was a gambling man, Id say that was a pretty safe bet, especially kicking inside.

Im soo ready for football season!

UGA has the most difficult schedule in the country. I predict they will go 11-1. I see the only potential loss is to LSU. We will however win the SEC title and also the National Championship. WE have too much talent on both sides of the ball for anyone to handle us.

The gators seem to forget that you win with defense, and we hung 42 points on that defense last year. This year we are a better offensive team and our defense is better. The Gators may have a more improved offense but their defense has not improved. They will not be able to stop us, just like last year. I look for Stafford to have a great day against those sub-par DB’s on Urban “Crier’s” team.

All you SEC people out their, if you think Moreno is great wait till you see his back-up Caleb King. I know I can’t wait.

I just don’t see us losing to allbarn ,only because they have a new offence and their d is overrated. I do think it will be close until the 4th Qt and then it will be monroe left , monroe right , I still see alot of three and outs for auburn, after seeing the practice this week the QB are way off the mark and the cb can’t cover anyone, hope you all don’t lose anymore players in the secondary, cause it will be ugly. I see auburn winning 6 or 7 games this yr.

Despite Georgia’s tough schedule, I think the Dawgs will win every single game on their schedule though they will have a few scares just like they did in 1980. They will have enough weapons to win the close ones. Tech on the other hand will have more trouble than you think adjusting to their new coach and offensive philosophy and you’re dreaming if you think they will beat FSU. That team I think will surprise a lot of people and play for the conference championship. I think Tech will win no more than 5 games. The same for the Falcons. Nothing I have seen or heard so far tells me they’ll be any better than last year. I think they win 5 games. There you have it. Georgia 12 wins, Tech 5 wins, Falcons 5 wins.

What are you kidding me! Auburn?! You realize you are talking about a team which is breaking in a new QB as well as an entirely new offensive system… They don’t have the right personelle needed to run the spread offense to their full effect yet. It will take at least two or three years for Auburn’s new offensive strategy to take flight. Alabama wins the west because of more experience and everyone is looking at LSU and Auburn (both of whom have no experience in the QB position). The Dawgs win the east though and go through a paper tiger schedule with maybe one loss to either Florida or Alabama (though hopefully no losses). Go Dawgs!!!

Mark- What the hell are you thinking? Georgia is so much more talented than Auburn. I don’t care if the game is in Auburn or in Athens, UGA will win this game. Kodi Burns is overrated and Auburn is overrated. Auburn won’t be any better (or worse) than they already were last year or any of the years before. Matt Stafford and Knowshon will run and pass all over their defense! Final score:

i am awake. and the reality of it is it was 10-7 at halftime. i was there. the stadium was pretty quiet. more reality: golden boy david greene and the rest of your first string offense was on the field with 2:00 to go in the game to try to score because apparently 41-28 was too close for marky mark richt. didn’t go down to the wire because of a big 3rd quarter for uga with a couple of big plays on offense and special teams.

peterson played in the 2000 game and had about 150 yards. final score of that one was 29-7. we moved the ball pretty well all day…just couldn’t get into the endzone. jermaine austin was our leading rusher in ‘04. he went down with an ankle injury on the opening drive of the game and did not return. our backup was hurt, so our 3rd string guy had to carry the load all game. he scored 2 td’s. 48-28 final…but we had the ball down 41-28 late 4th quarter, but couldn’t score. uga’s first string offense managed another score to make it look a little more convincing.

we have a better coach this year than in 2004. we are just really young. i never said we would win the game. but if we didn’t think we had a chance, our guys wouldn’t even load the bus. we have over 50 freshmen on the roster. give hatcher a few years. we will be a powerhouse. and after the ncaa lifts the ban on jumping divisions, we might just come join the ‘big boys’ in I-A. we are doing a feasibility study right now. if we can hang on to hatcher, things might get really good down in statesboro in a few short years…

You guys still lost, doesnt matter what else happen but you guys still lost. Plus the only people whom report on GSU are the people whom live south of Macon. Maybe by the year 2025 GSU will join 1-A and maybe play some big name teams. I mean come on who gets excited about Mid Tenn State? Or the Citadel coming to town. I am not trying to dog GSU, but facts are that most people who go to GSU still love UGA, plus many folks just dont follow 1-AA football, 1-AA gets to shine the first week of the season, last year was a fluke cause Michigan suked anyway lol. Again when GSU wakes up and there small majority of alumni donate money to the school to move it up to the big boys then we can talk about it again until then GSU is the family dollar of college football in this state, while Georgia is the 5th Avenue

Georgia Southern has a lot to be excited about with the transfer of Henton from OSU back to GSU to be a stud QB for Hatcher.

Falcons are going to suprise a few teams. Once Matty-Ice takes the field, we’ll win a few on enthusiasm alone.

    UGA - 10 GT - 7 Falcons - 2

I love how when someone stabs UGA’s schedule everyone gets all, “How DARE you!? We have the HARDEST SCHEDULE IN THE COUNTRY”.

Please, can someone tell me what makes UGA’s schedule so dang hard? I mean they have a typical SEC lineup, but instead of getting to feast on Ole Miss to go along with your traffic-stopping annual matchups against Kentucky and Vanderbilt (neither one of which you’ve had an easy time dealing with) and Alabama, you actually have to play against LSU? Wow big woop, funny how UF does the same thing for the past two years and you don’t hear a peep out of them having to play both Auburn and LSU in the same season. And Auburn playing UGA and UF in the same season, you don’t hear the bragging or complaints.

Or could it be your trip all the way around the world to the powerhouse Arizone State? Big bad Arizona State. Don’t give me crap about how they were number two at one point last year- who wasn’t? And we all know that GT hasn’t been much of an out of conference opponent for some time.

So you have an average SEC schedule for the first time in a couple years, and have to play Arizona State and the ugly likes of Central Michigan and Georgia Southern? You guys are so hyped up on what you’ve heard, I don’t think you guys have actually considered what your schedule really involves. It’s a typical SEC schedule and you guys sure don’t deserve to be so “how dare you?” arrogant about defending it.

The last time LSU won the National Championship, the Dawgs took them to the wood shed in Athens the year following. The Dawgs will whip LSU pretty good and beat the Gators because we are all in their head and they are going to be have 2 losses by then because we are all they can think about. I love it that the shoe is on the other foot. But, the DAWGS will lose to Auburn because that is what almost always happens. They will be so busy patting themselves on the back after getting through murderers row. The DAWGS still play for the NC and lose to Southern Cal, too bad we couldn’t get a Big Ten patsy like Fl and LSU got the last two years.

Figures UGA will lose to someone, the schedule is too brutal. I would still pick the Dawgs on any given Saturday against any opponent. But the cumulative effects of this brutal schedule is too much to ask. Auburn may well be a good one to beat us. If we somehow run the gauntlet and survive, we could let down before a much improved Auburn team on the road. A West Division loss would not hurt that bad.

UGA - 11 wins, SEC East Champs, SEC Champs, National Champs.

As a GT fan, I don’t really care what the Fashion Merchandising, Art History, and Remedial Education student-atheletes from Athens do, unitl November, so here’s my GT predictions.

Folks, this is nt the SAME GT from 2007, nor 2001-2006. This will be an entirely NEW GT team that nobody has seen before. GT wil have the edge in EVRY GAME. BC & VT are now shadows of their 2007 teams. Massive talent losses for both teams on both sides of the ball. GT will win a close one at BC. Then, GT shock “sportswriters everywhere” with a first class beat-down on VT in Blacksburg. Beamer has spent most of the Summer trying to lower fan expectations. VT will be very weak this year. After GT wins at BC and at VT, a lot of ink is gonna be spilled in this fishwrapper about how “we couldn’t have guessed GT would be this good.” Then, GT will win at Clemson(totally over-rated & over-hyped) and win at home vs. FSU. Miss State game is too close to call because you just shouldn’t bet against Croom. The UNC game will also be close because you shouldn’t bet against Butch Davis. UNC will surprise a lot of folks this year. And Miami, PUH-LEEEEAAASSSEEE. They have GT’s old OC Pat Nix. That joke continues in 2008. Miami is a write-ff evenbefore the season starts. A whole lot more ink is gonna get spilled in this fishwrapper on Friday morning after after GT routs Miami on ESPN on Thursday, Nov 20th as ESPN shows the GT fans RAINING ORANGES on Grant Field at half-time. GT will face a Clemson or FSU rematch for the ACC title. And YES, GT will shock the world and win in Athens. Then, all os us GT fans will enjoy 364 days of total SILENCE from all those Dawg-bound types.

GA will lose to ASU and will be in the bcs championship game because of the early loss. Ga tech will be lucky to win 4. They have a pathetic football program. It is rare for them to win the state of GA championship much less the acc. Falcons to win 6 if healthy. they have the wright coach in place and with the passing of the VICKDOG era. They will be okay in the future, we just have to be patient.

u(sic)ga loses 2 to FL and LSU, but I’m betting FL stumbles elsewhere (1 QB running all the time is just stupid) and the puppies go SECCG. Strong showing there and (ala LSU) they’re in Miami. Flip a coin to determine who wins it all.

Falcons win 4, Dolphins break out for 7 wins under the Tuna

While I love Tech, I see them winning 7 and that’s if things fall into place. Part of that includes either a loss or a VERY close game to Jacksonville St. to get the team to focus better. That’s right, don’t count out J St.; Tech’s defense can’t (for the most part) put points on the board, the offense won’t be there yet, and special teams will be a joke from its former self last season. What’s worse is that Tech gets to face a running and throwing QB that was recruited to one of the top football schools in the country…just in case you forgot Perrilloux transfered from LSU and will be on the flats soon.

Southern—Blowout Starters play 1 series of second half

    C. Michigan— see above

S Carolina — Low scoring defensive game. We make more plays and win 24-10

Arizon St— Too much media hype around this one. We win in convincing fassion 42-10

Alabama— first big night game of the year. Sanford will be rockin’ We will start a little sluggish but put them away in the 2nd half. We just have too much depth for them. 28-14

Tenn— IF we did not have the off week I would be worried. They will be good but not good enough after a bye. Dawgs roll to the tune of 35-17

    Vandy—blowout

LSU—night game 24-17 dawgs in a squeeker day game 35-10 dawgs in an easy win. LSU is not the same team during the day.

Ufag—Probably the most intriging game on the schedule. They still have no d-line and are not even close to matching us on defense. They will have a very difficult offense to stop if they are healthy but I think our d line gets to Tebow again and we make stops when we have to. They will not be able to stop our running game with freshmen tackles and Staff will have open receivers due to play action. Dawgs survive 38-32

UK—Big hangover game. Our d better be good b/c we are not going to score much in this game. They will have a good D and I expect a low scoring game. Staff makes game winning drive to keep championship hopes alive. 17-14

Auburn—Dawgs limp in after a long road trip. Put up a valiant effort but a hungry and rested pack of tigers prevails in the end. 28-21

Tech—after a loss and an off week we make this look like the lowndes playing Lanier. Dawgs roll—-52-3

Georgia defies all odds and runs the table all the way through to the BCS Title game. They finish unbeaten and thought of as one of the best college football teams of all time. If they win them all with this schedule that is the title they will deserve.

I dont see Tech as improving much for two years. I will agree with Mark. 7 wins max.

Somebody here said something about unsubstantiated Optimism. Well I say there is lots of needless PESSIMISM. The Falcons arent THAT bad. They were close in several of their losses last year and they had NO coaching. With the staff we have now I think it is very possible we win 7. (And yes I said WE and I will continue to say WE any Jacka$$ that wants to lecture me about how I dont suit up and play with the team can take their opinions and stow them). But I will be optimistic on the Falcons too and say 8 wins.

The Dawgs will lose a game this year, but it won’t be to Auburn. Apparently Bradley didn’t consult his Auburn journalist counterparts, all of whom believe that Stafford will go undefeated in his career against the Tigers. If we’re going to lose it will be either to LSU or Bama in an upset.

Steve, Steve, Steve. You are either a hater or just football ignorant. There are only 2 teams on the schedule that IMO can possibly beat GA…..LSU and FLA….and they will win at least one of those…probably both. SC, Tenn, AzS, Aub, Ala, GT? LMAO.

    August 7, 2008 12:31 PM | Link to this

Auburn and Georgia have traditionally been spoilers for each other. Another scenario is Tech improving each week and delivering a blow at the end to an overconfident Georgia squad. It is all hypothetical. I hope the Dawgs are not thinging about Nov. 1 when they meet Georgia Southern and certainly not Thanksgiving. The only thing I would bet on right now is UGA playing LSU twice this season.

1st off, for all of you guys that think the SEC is going to hurt UGA this year: tell me how many SEC teams are returning a starting QB. the answer would be 2, UF and UGA. so how is it that you all think Auburn, who got rid of Cox and LSU who got rid of both QBs might beat us? That makes no sense. UGA will have problems, yes, but not as many as the other teams. we are returning more starters and more back-ups that have game-time experience than most of the teams in the COUNTRY!

Now, when you look at Southern and say that it doesn’t matter cause they don’t “play with the big boys”, you are just being ignorant. App State beat Michigan in the Big House and the Southern beat them at their small little stadium in the ‘Boro, yes the same season. also, if you would like to recall how FSU got into D-1, that would be because of Bobby Bowden, they were a D-II school before and during his coaching days, he moved them up. You always have to start somewhere.

    Georgia wins at least 10

Tech wins maybe 7, but the coming seasons when they are the only option team in the nation they will start doing damage again, and yea i hate Tech, but respect them.

Falcons, hell who knows, but we all know that these games are important for Ryan, he has no NFL experience and just needs to get out there and follow his game plan and continue to learn.

I pray for the Braves too, but after 14 years of dominating there has to be a little give, even the Yankees have never done what the Braves did for those seasons, or any other team in any sport for that matter.

GT - 7 Falcons - 1 UGA - 12 highlighted by: Dogs 41 - UF - 4 (UF gets the 4 because Stafford is chased two times out of the end zone by Coach Urban for celebrating too much after the first 2 touchdowns!)

From the Post Game News Conference with Urban Cryer. Quoting Coach Cryer: “Urban thinks that we still haven’t gotten over the end-zone celebration from last year” “Urban’s bright idea of having the entire UF student body rushing the field, tearing down the goal posts after the first UF points causing a 4 hour delay - backfired!” “Urban is getting tired of having to refer to himself in the third person on UF campus therefore he is going to go back to Utah.”

UGA wins 11 - Lose to LSU or Auburn and then beat that team in the SEC champ game for redemption. No way they lose to SC or UT this year. UF can’t stop Moreno so they will lose handily - again. I also predict that UF has 2 loses before they even play UGA(probably UT and LSU). At which time they will be handed their 3rd loss of the year by the Dawgs.

Tech - 7 wins and goes bowling for 1 more win.

UGA will lose two, possibly three from among Arizona State, USC, Tenn., Alabama, LSU, Auburn, and Georgia Tech. The schedule’s that tough, and they’re not quite as good as they think. That will be just enough to insure that there will be no national championship in Athens following this season.

Tech will win 7, struggling early, improving as the year goes on and the offense settles in. It will look ugly at times, but could be a juggernaut next season.

Since it’s becoming a popular topic (and because I’m a Southern alum) I’ll add them to my earlier prediction.

GaSoU wins 9 losing at Georgia and vs Appalachian State.

Now, as for the Georgia - Georgia Southern game: Southern lost there star QB and Walter Payton award winner Jayson Foster to the NFL.

In addition, the team is very young. The only ray of hope is Chris Hatcher saying that if he didn’t think Southern had a chance to win, he wouldn’t bother making the trip.

While I admire his tenaciousness and heart in these matters, I don’t think Southern will be able to hold this Georgia team back for a whole game (and it pains me to say that, I hate UGAy).

Prediction for the game: UGAy - 35 GaSoU - 17

Falcons are going to the playoffs; believe it! Here’s why: Michael Turner and Jerious Norwood will light up the fast track of the Georgia dome. Whoever plays quarterback will be a game manager who will give the rock to Roddy White, Laurent Robinson, Michael Jenkins, Harry Douglas, Brian Finneran, and again Turner and Norwood. And let’s not forget about Ovie the “boulder”. The offensive line will be good enough for these guys to flourish; remember they gave up 13 of their 47 sacks in the first two weeks. So they only allowed 34 sacks (2.5 average sacks allowed per game) the rest of the way, which is not that bad given that they passed 555 times. Oh yeah, didn’t we suffer through a lot of injuries on the O-line. So enough with the complaining! On defense, they still boast greats like John Abraham, Lawyer Milloy, Keith Brooking, Michael Boley, and big Grady Jackson. And with them alongside the young guys such as Grimes, C. Jackson, Lofton and/or Tony Taylor, Houston, and Jammal Anderson, they should reflect an exciting group of athletic and mentally astute ballplayers. You must also take into account that the style of defense we’ll employ is going to be a simple cover-2 defense that allows players to just play without much thinking—that is, not having to know where to line up every play; (check out the other cover-2 defenses such the Bucs, Bears, Colts, and Jaguars) this should give the youngsters the ability to just play and not think. Special teams wise, Jason Elam should do us well. This is no worry because they always rank among the best, even last season they played well. So even if they don’t make the playoffs, they should be competitive in every game no matter what. I guarantee super bowl in three years; yes super bowl in three years!

If the Falcons DEF holds up and they are successful in establishing their rushing OFF, they could get off to a good start and win between 8 and 10gms. We’re actually talented at most of the OFF skill positions, but we’re also thin. The success of the DEF, and the team overall, will depend on how well our DC is able to utilize and maximize our talent within his scheme. And, we’ll be very vulnerable to key injuries at key positions.

I don’t know, and I don’t care about UGA or Tech, especially UGA. I don’t like the way the school stood by and allowed former HC VDooley to corrupt the system with his DEVELOPMENTAL STUDIES crap. The program was designed to keep his athletes eligible by enrolling them in none core curriculum courses. Dooley controlled these courses and they provided little towards an athletes chances of graduating.

DR Jan Kemp stood up to Dooley’s pressure to give his players passing grades. You see, even with a full load in Dooley’s DEVELOPMENTAL STUDIES, the school still required each student to take a certain number of core curriculum courses. All she wanted was for him to at least insist that his players attend her classes. When he refused, she blew the whistle on his stupid anus. What did the institution due once his scam was exposed, they promoted him to the position of Athletic Director. What did they do to DR Kemp for exposing his scam, they fired her. Then it appears her husband, who also worked for UGA, was encouraged to divorce her. As a result, he was granted custody of their kids. In the end, she was sent to jail for not turning her kids over to her husband in protest to the unfair treatment by the UGA and it’s influence over the legal system.

WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT UGA’S POSITION ON ATHLETICS AND IT’S ATHLETES, IN RELATIONSHIP TO EDUCATION? IT’S PERFECTLY OK TO SUPPORT YOUR FAVORITE TEAM, BUT DON’T IGNORE THE FACTS, OR PRETEND THEY NEVER EXISTED, WHEN THEY ARE UNFLATTERING, OR DON’T SUIT YOUR PURPOSES.

Plus even with the embarassing dui and fight arrests the simple fact is that UGA isn’t alone in the bad behavior department. Why I do believe that little ol’ tech had a starter that tried to get into the drug dealing business with a 30k drug buy attempt. Another is accused of rape, and a staff member (little Joe, not moving so slow or soberly) arrested and shaming your school. UGA may have a few more but the severity of Yech infractions and the fact that a STAFF member is one of your felons makes all your fanatical wailing and moaning and cries of thuga incredibly stupid and clear evidence of your lack of any real world awareness. So heres to another UGA win this year and more tears from the yellow bellies. (BTW I like PJ and really do feel sorry for the fact he’s at such a loser institution.)

I think fatigue (physical and mental due to the glare of the spotlight) comes into play at some point. Tech 7 sounds about right. I think the Falcons get 6 almost by accident. At any rate, I agree that OSU will not get another opportunity (whether fairly or unfairly is up for debate, but nevertheless immaterial) to embarrass themselves or the mighty, nebulous and all-powerful BCS this year. Gsu Eagle:

I have no problem with Geo Southern. I think it is a great program, but lets take a look at the facts:

The GSU v. UGA game was played in 2000. UGA won the game 29-7. If you take away some sort of moral victory from that, I don’t have a problem with that, but was it close? not really

UGA led 7-0 at end of 1st Q UGA led 14-0 at halftime UGA led 16-0 at end of 3

Adrian Peterson scored on a 9 yard run with 12 minutes to go in the game (so he wasn’t lost in the first quarter).

    THIS YEARS GAME:

Anything can happen, but here is my opinion:

Georgia’s coach was Donnan and the team in 00 was sub par by UGA standards (under Richt)

This year, UGA supposedly has a MUCH MUCH better team on paper.

I’m not sure that Southern is AS GOOD a team as the 2000 squad, but you would know that better than me.

Southern runs a disciplined offense and will likely keep it close through the half again… but with a new QB at Southern and the size, speed, and talent depth difference… I predict an ugly 2nd half

Let’s remind our Tech Friends one more time. The world hails UGA “Pre-season’ as the number one team in the nation while the page ran out before I found Tech. You don’t get that by being OK. You guys will never be more than a 7 or 8 win team. As the Herschal days are gone, the Dodd days are gone. The game has changed and Engineering schools have not. I wish you the best but you will never get the Athletes on the flats to win 10-11 games. I don’t care how “spread option” you get. Study closely who Navy moved the ball on and who they didn’t ! GA. 10 wins TECH 5 Falcons 5

Georgia will win at least 10 games with maybe losses to LSU & Florida. Hopefully, not a Florida loss.

Georgia Tech will win only 6 games this year due to the transition of new coach and new offense.

Falcons will win 6 games this year. I see them improving each game and that could mean 6-8 wins.

Mark- I haven’t read the other blogs, so my apology if you have answered this question. Why did you pick Auburn? If this UGA Team gets to Auburn undefeated, what in four dozen hells makes you think Auburn is so special this year that they can beat ANY team that has defeated all those teams on UGA’s schedule? Logic would dictate a team early in the schedule would have the best chance. If Auburn is that good in your eyes, then you have picked them to be NC! On second thought I don’t want your contrived answer because that dog won’t hunt. While you always consider that UGA and AU are usually like mirror images and always play tough, this is not the year to base your choice on past performances. Just think about these teams as Offense vs. Offense and Defense vs. Defense. Would you like to retract that silly statement now or wait until you have thought about it some more?

Dawgs will win 10 in the regular season( losing to Bama and FLA) and will win their bowl game to finish 11-2

Jackets will finish 5-7 but will lose 3-4 close games which will make them better in 2009.

Dawgs win 11. I can’t pick the loss, I just feel like there will be one (or two, but I’m going with one).

Tech wins 7 and makes a bowl. I think they lose to UNC, VT, ClemPson, UGA, and one of the Florida schools.

Falcons will have four wins going into the final two weeks of the season. They will then proceed to win the next two assuring that they don’t get the first pick in the draft. So that makes 6 for them.

Total wins (bowl games don’t count): 24

GWB Where is any comment that was wrong. I stated facts. uga is overrated year after year and typically by you homers. You love to trash talk , unless it is against a school that has owned you for decades. Stafford hasnt shown any sign of greatness and you homers say he is a Heisman canidate. He isnt the best QB in the SEC ! Sara Jessica Parker Wilson is better than Stafford. Crompton at Tennessee has had better games stats. Get over yourselves as this is the first time in 25 years your schedule even matches with the best of the SEC. Georgia has played so soft out of conference it is laughable. georgia typically starts 4-0 then comes Tennessee and spoils that. Then Florida,,,,, All while they have played elite teams. UT opens wth UCLA and then Florida. Arizona State granted 12 years ago when they set this game they were playing well, now they are not even close a challenge as Alabama will be. Im looking forward to waching the fall !!! georgia wins 7 games.

Georgia hasn’t won less than 8 games since 1996. You’d have to be a complete moron to believe that this year’s team is the worst Georgia has put on the field in over a decade. Need I remind you, in 2005 Tennessee won a lowly FIVE games.

You are correct about quieting Sanford in that game. I have blogged about games on our schedule this year and I remind people that after the GSU and UAB games early in that season that we had the greatest number of injuries to key players before or since those games. And Sanford was quiet during the UAB game as well. If you believe that our UGA team or true fans disrespect GSU, that would be a mistaken conclusion. Don’t pay any attention to zealots that would blog negative crap to arouse our opponents because they are probably wacky teenagers with no football knowledge and this new world of blogging empowers them to say anything, true or false, without fear of reciprocity. You need only look at statements by Coach Richt and Stafford(plus other players) who have stated they are concentrating on one game at the time and don’t believe for a moment that the Eagles can’t beat our butts. That also applies to Central Michigan and ASU.

I have close family members with degrees from GSU, we(UGA fans and alumni) had ties there when your coach and AD from UGA was revered beyond his years at UGA, and some of our coaches as well as others have ties to GSU. We all look forward to meeting your team on the playing field. We know your reputation as a championship team and we expect nothing more than you playing your hearts out in this game and we expect nothing less from our team as well.

UGA - 9-3. Everyone who keeps speaking on all this talent has to remember that this is the essentially same team that lost to SC and won at Vandy last year on a missed field goal (I think, something of that sort). Yeah, they got excited after the “celebration” and knocked off some wins, but who did they really beat at the end of the year. Teams that had peaked or were on the downslide. They will win a couple games and get their heads on cloud 10 after Arizona State then let Alabama sneak in and take one from Sanford. After which they will lose to UF and AU, and possibly at LSU. Stafford finished 4th in Heisman, Knowshawn falls out of running early (no pun intended).

Tech - 7-5, maybe 8-4. They’ll go .500 the first 4 games, then lose to Clemson, FSU, and UGA (give or take 1 or 2 of those games). It will be ugly a lot of the time for tech, but they’ll pull together and build a solid foundation for 2009. And look out for Dwyer. He is going to turn some heads as a featured back.

Falcons - 0-20 (Yeah, they’ll lose all the preseason games too). Who are we kidding, they are going to suck.

I think anybody choosing Georgia to lose either to LSU and to lesser degree auburn is just football ignorant and I’m shocked to read so many of you are actually ignorant: First, Georgia will beat the crap out of LSU, why? because LSU has new QB, new DC and many top players left to NfL, yes they are talented but inexperience and Georgia play very well on the road second, Georgia will beat Auburn, simply because Georgia play better at Auburn, Georgia has way better offense and again auburn has new QB, DC and OC so they need time to find their chemistry in order to beat the big dawg. but the most challenging game for Georgia will be Florida, hate to say it but Florida is the most dangerous team because, Florida has good offense their Defense should be better than last year and Georgia will play them after coming back from LSU. let me hear your argument why Auburn will beat Georgia

Tech could do as well as 9-3 (losing to the Hoagies, Clempsun, and Clarke County), or as bad as 6-6 (the above three plus BC and two random games, one of which is a choke job and the other is just a plain ol’ butt-whoopin’.

I’m sorry, I DO NOT see Tech already losing to UNC. Not because of Davis, and not because of Kenan. However, UNC could be one of those two random games. But UNC still won’t be that good yet. UNC is never good enough to mark down as an L.

The good news: UGA’s streak ends. The bad news: In 2009.

Now, another distinct possibility is that Tech does like what they did in 1989 and drop their first three DI-A games, before running the table for the rest of the season (except for a loss to a Spurrier Duke team that wound up tying the ACCC with the Cadavers) once all the kinks and bugs are worked out.

If that happens, I would predict 8-4 with losses to BC, VT, Missy State, and Clemson and then winning out (INCLUDING UGA). Tech wins a minor bowl and finishes in the bottom of the top 25, based on season momentum if not record.

Tech fans need to chill it will be years before they become a div-1 contender again. Give your coach time to to make the team better and stop hating UGA because they have a supior team.

Darth Hater wrote this morning: “The Braves will lose their inept pitching coach and FINALLY regain Leo Mazzone.”

Are you keeping up with the Braves, or just looking at the standings. The Braves problem is not their pitching coach - they’ve gotten pretty good work out of their pieced-together pitching staff. If anyone should go, maybe Terry Pendelton, as Braves hitters seem to go downhill (Andruw Jones, Francouer) - our best two hitters (McCann & Chipper) are coached by their dads.

    Anyway, back on subject.

UGA - I think they lose twice in the regular season, probably to LSU and either Auburn or Florida.

GT - So hard to predict. I think its a down season, as they have to adjust to a new system, new QB, RB, etc. I think they win 6, mostly on defense.

Falcons - With all the crap surrounding the team last year, they managed to win 4 (and with better luck, could have won 2 or 3 more). I have to believe this team will function much better than last year. I wish they kept Alge, but with the Turner/Norwood combo at RB and Roddy White as an emerging star WR, this team could possibly surprise a few people. OL and DL are definitely still big question marks, so I’ll temper my optimism a little and say the Falcons go 6-10.

Hawks make it back to the playoffs (with a winning record this time).

A loss at Auburn, might not be too bad, if that in fact is the only regular season loss. The rational, of course,is then we play them again, in SEC championship, and “it’s hard to be beat a great team the second time”, comes into play. Then a win there and its on to the NCG.

CHARLES-if you’ll notice, I said I didn’t care about either UGA or TECH. One means no more to me than the other, especially football wise. Let me ask you this question? Did TECH throw anyone under the bus, or ruin anyones life and career, like UGA did to DR Jan Kemp, when their scam was exposed? Wrong is wrong and a scam is a scam. Neither school gets a pass from me.

With their talent, UGA should go undefeated. With that said UGA to me has always appeared a very unfocused team.I think they’ll win 10 maybe 11 games. The schedule is too tough. UGA doesn’t always win games they’re supposed to. (remember South Carolina and Tennessee last year) The off-field incidents need to stop soon. Caleb King will be great as long as he doesn’t punh out students and bars and disrespect cops like he did last week. Even if UGA should stay focused, its the SEC and if a waaaaaaaay more talented LSU team last year couldn’t do it what makes anyone think UGA can do it this year when they’re whole schedule is tough. Az.State on the road is one scary non-conference game, they get S. Carolina on the road after losing to the Gamecocks in Athens, yes Tennessee is in Athens, but Tennessee has won their past two trips between the hedges in sluding a man-handling in ‘06. Florida will be tough, their defense can’t be worse than last year. A road game at Auburn is going to be tough and if they get to the SEC championship they will be tested by whoever they play be it Auburn, LSU, or heck even Alabama. It’s the SEC, no game is easy(remember Vandy vs. UGA last year)Undefeated isn’t happening. With focus they should be #1 at season’s end, but that’s a big question.

If Tech wins 6 or 7 it’s a successful season. I think its gonna be 5 or 6.

    The Falcons win 3.

Well guys, I’ve taken abuse before but I stand on my predictions. Georgia will get the big head after they overwhelm Ga. Southern, then cry in anguish when Moreno tears up his knee. Couple of others will also be injured, It’s not that I wish injury on them but that’s the way the old ball bounces. The Quarterback will be the best runner on the team but he’ll be running for his life. Guys, he is really dumb! Maybe I should add Vandy to the list of teams who will kick Ga.’s butt.

UGA goes undefeated. Tech will be 7-5 and have a good second half as the team learns the new offense. They will play GA very close, but eventually be defeated due to GA depth.

Keys to GA season are focus and being ready to play every game. Martinez needs to have his best season as D-coordinator. Bobo will continue to improve as Play caller and O-coordinator. I believe UGA O will throw down field much more this year as teams try to stop Moreno.

Georgia: 11-1 with a regular season loss to Auburn. The revenge win over Auburn in the SECCG gets them to 12-1, title game against OSU (who will beat the real USC this season) will determine the MNC.

Tech: 5-7 or 6-6. Wins over FSU and Miami; losses to UNC, Clemson, Georgia, Va Tech, BC and MSU and maybe one more random team.

Falcons: 4 wins. Which ones, I have no idea.

National darkhorse teams: USF (could beat Kansas early in Lawrence), Pitt (9-3 as team comes together at last for Dave Wannstedt), Ole Miss (8-4), UNC (8-4).

Crash and burn teams: Arkansas (couldn’t happen to a nicer guy), Alabama (Saban magic can’t overcome youth and inexperience), Florida (most overhyped, overrated team since Tennessee 2005—no defense, and now no TE).

1st) The 2004 Ga Southern game was over after the 3rd quarter.

2nd) Two touchdowns Southern scored were in the late 4th, off our 2nd string defense. You got a TD to cut it to 41-21 with about 5 minutes left and our backups were unable to move the ball on our next drive. The game was over and we had been on cruise control for the 10 minutes..Garbage time TD’s are common…don’t hang your hat on them. Our starters showed back up to ice the game and hold onto the ball for the last 3 minutes…we happened to score in the process.

3rd) It was 13-7 at halftime, not 10-7.

4th) Yes, we struggled to get your offense off the field (You held the ball 37 minutes to our 22), but while we had our 1st team defense on the field (about 32 minutes), you only scored 14 points and clearly had the majority of the possession. I would term that as bend but don’t break.

When I first saw Eli Manning I thought he was a gangly pup who threw too many interceptions, and obviously got his job because of his brother, Peyton Manning. He was too scrappy. Too crude. Flashes of brilliance, but he was losing games he should have won. Then, last year happened, and I glimpsed the ghost of one of the horsemen.

    ODE TO ELI

Outlined against a blue grey curtain of certain and sudden death, Eli slipped the surly grasp of the blitz. He wheeled and flung and did a hundred things I’ve only dreamed of. His oval soared long and delirious over tangled arms and teeth clenched in hate. Once more into the breech he joined the tumbling mirth and offered a wounded desperation that a wide-out held on to like it was the Lombardi Trophy.

The next thing you know, Burress fakes the post, and son I got High Fives way down low, low, low…..

    THE END

Go Dawgs!! (but they only win 9 games) Go Falcons!! (but they only win 6 games)

Go Tech! (but they only win 5 games)

The problem with the dogs this year is that they have a very mediocre coach. Last year they seemed invincible, but come crunch time they folded. I’ll never forgive that georgia coach for that. He should not be in that job if he blew the chances he had for the national title so incompetently. He blew it. And he knows it. There’s no way Ga should have lost ANY games last year.

    And I think it’s a damn shame.

I’m a football savant. Georgia’s coach, and I refuse to name him, needs to resign and go coach nursing home tiddlywinks.

I’m not on the pipe again nor am I drinking. I’ve been a football handicapper for several years, enough to make a good living.

Your thoughts of a winning season or championship are what you hope they will do, not the reality of what they will do.

Last year, you were embarrassed by South Carolina and thoroughly smashed by Tennessee. Your Florida game was played against a team with a crippled quarterback.

Richt has a history of losing a game he should have won. This year will be no different.

There are a lot of delusional people on this blog. In objectively evaluating Georgia and their schedule the trap games for us this year are Alabama, Vanderbilt and Kentucky. With us having the Tide and Vandy in Athens I believe we will win a close game with Bama and as for Vandy and Kentucky we are just too deep for them. We will beat ASU in a blow out. As for all of this talk about South Carolina they do have a pretty good defense but that won’t help them this year. As for Tennessee we have the bye week and they are suspect on defense with a new QB with very little actual game experience and no David Cutcliffe plus they are very thin depth wise on both the OL and DL’s where games are won. LSU will be a challenge but I believe the Dawgs will go into Baton Rouge and take care of business. As for the Gators this game will decide the SEC East, that is if they haven’t lost at Tennessee and/or lost to LSU but we will beat them again this year. As for Auburn we always seem to play them better at Auburn. GT will play us tough but does not have the horses, plus with all new coaches, new offensive scheme etc. we will beat them for the eighth time in a row. The Dawgs have the talent and the depth to go undefeated but could slip up, no one but God knows for sure what will happen.

GT- 7-5 or 6-6 better next year when they have been in Coach Johnson’s system for a year and he has had time to recruit his own players.

Falcons- 5-11 don’t really keep up with the NFL anymore as IMHO it is controlled by gambling.

BC lost QB Ryan, both starting RBs, both starting WRs and several Off & Def starters. VT lost star RB Brandon Ore, all 4 starting WRs, and almost the entire Defense. Folks, stand by, GT is going to absolutely CRUSH VT this year. VT will have NO running game, NO passing game, and a rookie defense. It’s gonna be a BLOWOUT. BC faces the SAME issues. And, GT won’t be throwing 4-5 interceptions and giving up 400 yds passing in both of those games, like 2007.

This is not GT under Chan Gailey. Even as poorly coached as GT was last year(and 2001-2006 for that matter) GT still beat Clemson, barely lost to MD and UVA both because of horrible coaching. GT won’t implode vs. Clemson like they did in 2006. In 2007, Davis & Spiller rushed for a COMBINED 62 yds! 62 yards! Clemson’s O-Line will look like a screen door this year. Harper, Davis & Spiller will spend A LOT of time looking up at the sky when GT rolls into Death Valley.

In 2008, GT will have THE #1 rush defense in the ACC, and a VERY good pass defense. Much better than ANYTHING we’ve seen in the last 7 years. Our new Def Coord Wommack is highly respected for his Def coaching and success, especially at LBs and CBs. The 2008 GT defense is going to be AWESOME.

It doesn’t matter what style of offense GT now runs. ANY Offense under CPJ is going to be MUCH better than ANYTHING Chan could deliver. For 7 L-O-N-G years, the Off was stifled by terrible QB play. Remember AJ Suggs in 2002-03? Reggie after that? The Off is going to be tremendously better just by the fact that there’s no more Chan, Reggie, or revolving-door OC’s. QB Nesbitt is gonna play like 1990 QB Shawn Jones. He’s gonna be terrific.

Lastly, several All-ACC players said at the ACC Media Event that if GT gets the Off going well early in the season, GT could go undefeated in conference. That’s not some jive talk from a “sports journalist” or talking head, that’s from real players who can see what the Off & Def line-up looks like for GT. I agree.

    Dogs 11-2

    Tech 6-6

Dogs lose close one early to SC, but then play angry all year and climb back to No 1 late in season, losing to Tech while looking ahead to SEC championship game, which they win and finish ranked No 3. Stafford goes pro.

Tech beats Jax St, Gardner Webb, Duke, FSU, Dogs, plus one other. Nesbitt has 18 fumbles, 15 INTs, 4 TD passes for the season, but breaks the single season QB rushing record for Tech.

    Falcons 5-11 (details unnecessary).

I think 11-1, with a loss at Auburn, is a very fair prediction for Georgia. That Auburn games comes at the end of a stretch including Tennessee, Vanderbilt, at LSU, at Jacksonville, and at Kentucky, with no bye week in the middle.

Auburn, meanwhile, has Arkansas, bye week, at West Virginia, at Ole Miss, and UT-Martin during the five weeks leading up to the game with Georgia.

As for Tech, I’d be pretty surprised to see them break .500. I don’t think they have a prayer against Florida State, which should be the most improved team in the league this season. Miami is one I’m not so sure about, but I think that’ll be a tall order for the depleted likes of Georgia Tech. Actually, I think Mississippi State (especially early in Tech’s season) will give them a heck of a challenge. In the end, I’ve got Tech going 4-8. If they win seven games in 2008 (and presumably enjoy another trip to San Francisco), I’ll be shocked.

And the Falcons…maybe three wins. Seriously.

Anyone who picks Georgia to lose 4 games is either delusional, asleep, insane, delirious, high on crack, in DT’s, idiotic, moronic, foolish, dreaming, brain-damaged, a Gamecock, just plain stupid or all of the above. There is NO TEAM on Georgia’s schedule—not Florida, not Tech, not Alabama, not ASU, not Auburn, not UT, nor LSU—no team that has Georgia’s level of talent at every position. There is NO TEAM on Georgia’s schedule that has Georgia’s depth at every position. So the assumption here is that Mark Richt—a coach who has won an average of 10+ games a season since coming to Athens, a coach who has won more games he should have lost than losing games he should have won, a coach who returns 18 starters from an 11-2 team—will somehow find a way to blow not one, not two, not three but FOUR games in a season in which he has more talent than anyone in America?

Uhhh, no. That’s not going to happen, folks.

The Dawgs may lose one, or even two, games this season. But Richt has only lost four games twice in seven years—his first season (an 8-4 year) and in a big rebuilding year in 2006 (a 9-4 year). He’s never lost four game sin a year in which the talent pool is this deep. NEVER.

The season can’t get here fast enough. Got to shut these idiots up.

Good lord Bradley, you really stirred the pot on this one……pretty freakin smart I think. This is what this blog sounds like on both ends: UGA wins 26 games and goes to the All World Bowl where they will face North Korea, Iraq, Japan and Iran. It’s a double header with Scotland, London and Ireland waiting their turn. GA Tech wins 18 games, wins the ACC and is Georgia’s #2 team at the All World Bowl, thus giving the state of Ga the edge. The Falcons are so good this season they end 32-0, and go back and win SuperBowl XII. On the flip side, UGA wins 3, Tech goes -4 and 12 and the Falcons entire team spontaneously combustes on the field in the 2nd preseason game. Geez guys. See how some of this sounds. And I’m a dam GA fan. Good luck on the season for each of our 3 local teams. That would be UGA, Falcons and Parkview…..just kiddin tech folks, had to get a tiny dig in. Yeah I know…I’m an idiot.

It never ceases to amaze me at the arrogance of UGA fans. The blog posted by UGA…..states:

“You should feel lucky we schedule you because if we didnt, nobody north of Statesboro would know who you are. It will be ok, your dad will forgive you for flunking out of UGA and going to GSU.”

Addressing an individual who obviously has as small a self-esteem as his intelligence level is difficult, but here goes nothing. Sir, regardless of what you think, some folks could care less if UGA and Athens fell off the map. Furthermore, there are also many out there who happen to like Georgia Southern, and all it has to offer. If you will do some research before opening your unintelligent mouth, you will find the current freshmen SAT averages at GSU and UGA pretty close. So, flunking out of UGA to go to GSU………..nah that won’t wash. Now will we beat you guys on August 30th, probably not. But your program history has a century jump on ours, not to mention more scholarships to offer high school athlete’s. Football in Statesboro started in the eighties. So looking at growth percentage wise with respect to program length………..GSU is putting up some strong numbers. By the way, Erk Russell put GSU on the map, not UGA. There is no honor in simply playing your bulldogs. Now for my predictions:

GSU will win 9 games this year UGA will win 10 (drilled by Florida, and a sneak up game) If you go undefeated, more power to you. I am man enough to tip my cap. It’s a confidence thing. Maybe you can have some one day and not have to belittle others to make yourself feel important!!

Who cares about the Falcons until they actual get quality season ticket holders instead of thugs. They Falcons will continue to go down until they address some serious game attending issues, and change the thuggish reputation.

Georgia Tech may have a building year this year, but you guys have something in Paul Johson. Speaking of him…….as a sideline prediction I could see Chris Hatcher going to Division 1-A on a coaching offer, and Paul Johnson heading back to Statesboro with an AD/Head Coach combo position with GSU bringing them to IA in strong fashion. That’s long term, but it has substance.

Hey Heel, I’m glad you’re so optimistic, I need to live by you vicariously. My BIGGEST fear(and I’m playin devil’s advocate) is that all this hype get’s in the team’s head as much as it’s in mine, and we totally screw things up, and the amount of crow we have to eat will choke a donkey. With this #1 target on our back, I can’t even make a lucid prediction. But I’m always very nervous this time of year, until the first couple of games are played and I can see what the progression is. The freakin Vols scare me Gen. I can’t get that beatdown outta my head. SC not so much, but that one scares a good friend of mine, who’s usually right on these things. That only leaves Florida as a mild hurtle, and I am sending Richt the gadget that will pysche out the Gators yet again. I predicted the Dawgs ‘80 title and I am predicting it again in ‘08. So, make your reservations Bulldog Nation. This is the Year of tha Dawgs!

Georgia’s hard to predict: I’ve been reading their Beat Writer’s reports, and while he’s OK at reporting from the practice field, we’d all be in better shape to predict the Dawg’s (sic) suxcess if he’d spend more time at the booking station of the Athens Police Precinct. If KnowLess Mowronoh and a few more guys get suspended, the early season schedule could get tough. As it is, I believe the Dawgs (sic) could still take 9 this year, losing in upsets to USC, ASU, and AU. But if their arrests actually outnumber Tech’s injuries, then the wheel’s could really fall off. Final number: 9. Speaking of Tech: 7 wins. This year. Likely losses are VT, Clem, UM, FSU, and Ugag. Next year, things will be different.
Falcons: Is Duke on their schedule? I don’t know where you can find a win on their slate, but even broken clocks are right twice a day. Throw in a miracle, and I give the Birds 3 wins.

    Summary, GT: 7, Ugag: 9, Falcons: 3.

Read it and weep, insects. GT wins 7. Falcons win 4. Ga. Southern loses to UGA and then wins out, even beating Appy State for the second year in a row, in the ‘Boro, but losing to them in the playoff rematch. Appy has too much returning and will win a 4th straight nat’l championship. The Eagles are a year away from total domination of the Football Championship Subdivision (what a stupid name).

UGA has the best backfield in the country. A great defence. BUT, Steve Spurrier is Steve Spurrier to GA. SC has 10 returning on defence. But, 14 starters if you count injuries and the other starters suspended. AKA the lindsey’s. SC offence will be ok. It is the 4th year of Spurrier. Close, but a UGA 24-21 victory.

    Dear Amazed:

First of all, as a U.Ga. graduate, I’d like to apologize for the rude post by one of my fellow fans. There’s no call for that sort of thing.

However, you made the point that Georgia and Georgia Southern’s SAT averages for admitted freshmen were “about the same.” That is not true. In fact, they aren’t even close.

The average SAT score (Math +verbal only) for the 2008 freshman class at U.Ga. was 1242, with an average high school GPA of 3.83. There were 4750 freshmen admitted at U. Ga. last year. That’s right off the U. Ga. website.

The average 2008 freshman SAT (again, math + verbal only) for Georgia Southern was 1083, with a an average high school GPA of 3.14. There were 2861 freshmen admitted at GSU last year. That’s off of the GSU website.

The difference between these two sets of values is striking. There is not much overlap there.

Moreover, to be in the Honors program at GSU, entering freshmen have to have a 3.5 GPA and an SAT minimum of 1200. By those criteria, the average U.Ga. student admitted for the 2008 class would have qualified for the GSU Honors Program.

While arrogant and disparaging remarks about the Georgia Southern University are uncalled for, it is inaccurate to equate the two institutions academically. From the standpoint of undergraduate admissions criteria, U.Ga. and GSU aren’t even in the same ballpark.

I think Georgia will drop 3 this year. 2 on the road and one at home, prob Tenn. Ga Tech, who knows, I would spit ball about 4 to 5 losses. The Falcons will go 6-10, or possibly could squeak out 7-9. 5-11 is most probable. Have to agree with Mr. Bradley on that.

    By Brent

    August 8, 2008 7:50 AM | Link to this

Well…I am a realist somewhat. I don’t buy into all this UGA hype about being a preseason No. 1. Keep in mind, they have to go TO Auburn, TO LSU, technically TO Florida and TO Arizona State. I see UGA losing to AU, LSU, and Florida. Posiibly Tennessee as well. So that’s 4 loses right there. UGA ALWAYS thinks they are better than they really are and cries when things don’t go there way. I live with a die hard UGA family so believe me, I KNOW ALL THE HYPE!! As for Tech (yes, as you can tell I am a Tech fan), I’m not going to sit here and say were going to win 9 games, but I do have enough confidence in Paul Johnson to foresee Tech winning at least 6 games and possibly going to a bowl. Like another blogger said earlier, he’s NOT Chan Gailey-THANK GOD!!!! As far as the Falcons are concerned, you have to look at them different than college teams, outside of the obvious reason. The Falcons have enough talent to go 8-8 possibly, but with a new system, new qurterback, etc.., this IS going to take some time. Believe me, Falcons fans aren’t the most patient fans in the world. Half my family are season ticket holders. But people need to realize that it’s going to take two to three seasons to get people in place and to get in the free-agents and draft picks we’ll need for down the road. I predict that by year three of Mike Smith’s tenure, he’ll be competing for the NFC Championship at least. I don’t feel it’s going to take years to do this simply b/c the Falcons don’t have that long of a time line with their fan base. Trust me, if by the third year of the new regime isn’t taking us to the NFC Championship game, fans are going to be pretty ticked. So…in a nut shell: UGA: 8-4 (9-4)depending on bowl game Tech:6-6 (7-6)depending on a bowl game. Falcons: 8-8 is not out of the question but I’ll settle for 7-9 for right now.

This has to be the toughest schedule in the country and to run the table is highly improbable. UGA will be 11-1 with a early loss at ASU. For a chance to be in the BCS championship you have to win the east and beat either Auburn or LSU twice for a chance to be there.

    Bradley:

How can Georgia Tech possibly lose to Boston College when they have lost QB Matt Ryan, the #3 pick in the draft that singlehandedly carried a wretched program on his back to respectability and is in your own words the best pure passer that you have ever seen (meaning better than Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Dan Marino, Steve Young, Joe Montana, etc.)? Simple. Matt Ryan was never nearly as good as you claimed him to be. He was just another good QB on a good team just like there is every year, and probably wasn’t even any better than some of the other QBs in the draft like Chad Henne, Brian Brohm, and Andre Woodson (if you are going to claim that Woodson’s Wildcat team of SEC rejects had better talent than Boston College, which has practically the entire northeast to itself after the implosion of Penn State and Syracuse … oh yeah I forgot about mighty RUTGERS and UCONN …), and the Falcons passed up several superior athletes at need positions so that they could make a “let’s appease the north of I - 20 suburban fan base” PR move. Nice to know that you finally admitted the truth.

By the way, BC will beat Tech because BC always has - or at least had under O’Brien, the guy who built the program that has been to like 10 straight bowl games including a victory over mighty UGA and the legendary David Greene - a strong defense against the run. But the fact that life will go on at BC after Ryan proves that you were way overselling the kid when you were demanding that the Falcons drafted him, and that the Falcons made a huge error in committing so much of their cap room to a guy who will merely be capable and solid, not someone that can carry a franchise and make players around him better. Ryan will need a strong supporting cast to ever win anything of substance in the NFL, and that huge contract that the Falcons gave him will preclude their ever building one for him.

You could tell last year that the Georgia Bulldogs were for real. Yet, they choked at crunch time, and that’s coaching.

Same coach? then same results. They’ll blow easy games. They’ll win impressively in tuff ones. We’re about to get our hearts broken again by football in Georgia.

Why even predict the Falcons? Why dont they just sell plywood and hammers at the Depot and forget the whole thing. I’m not watching one football game that doesn’t have Eli Manning in it.

Prediction: Favre will be ineffective no matter which team he loses for. Old Quarterbacks never die, they just fade away.

Remember how inneffective Joe Montanna was with the Kansas City? Ditto the older Joe Namath.

You just cant come back. Favre is finished. It’s all over but the sacks.

    Amazing- nice post.

The Georgia Southern program is heading towards Div-1 status, it’s only a matter of when. Six national titles over a short 25 year program… I hardly think Eagle fans/alum have anything to be ashamed of. The Eagle’s program has been controversy-free and has built a large, loyal fan base across the state and northern Florida.

Georgia on the other hand has been mediocre at best since 1980 with at least six major NCAA infractions. The reason I no longer support the Dawgs is because of the arrogance of the UGA fans and especially the way they approach the occasional matchups with GSU. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… I hope the Dawgs lose every game. Go Eagles!

Mark- I see that you had a sigh of relief when I told you that we didn’t want to read your contrived defense for selecting Auburn. You won’t even give the point. Selecting the number of games each of those teams will win should have a defense. Few writers did that and your column got trashed by some kids. No informed stimulation, just a bunch of kids guessing. You deserve that for not defending your choice with well-informed shots that might be worth blogging. At least Chip Tower gives and conceeds well informed points. Why don’t you defend by simply trashing my points,ie.: UGA plays Auburn late in the season and by then the gel on this bunch of fine athletes at UGA will be too much for anyone; I stated that the greatest chance for loss for this team was logically early in the season. At least you could engage those points without displaying any knowledge to back up your embarassing choice of Auburn. They are not the usual mirror image of our team this year. How about some cojones, Mark, while you are all preparing your big preseason review.

UGA 10-2 and probably wins bowl game. (losses to Florida and GT).

GT 8-4 and wins bowl game. Go Jackets Johnson knows what it means to win rivalry games, he’ll be preping all year for UGA.

Falcons I’ll be optimistic, they win 7.

OleDawg, I think the reason Auburn keeps popping up on everyone’s list of likely suspects to beat UGA is because they come physical. Only a very deep, very physical team can eat UGA this year. And that is the exact reason that Florida won’t beat them. Under Urban Meyer UF has gotten soft. In one year their D went from giving up 13.5 pts given up per game to 23.5 points per game. Pitiful. And that stat won’t change this year. Get in UF’s face, smash them in the mouth and they will fold. Urban Meyer will eventually soften UF to the point that they will become an after thought. Defense wins championships in the SEC and Florida doesn’t have one. If UGA gets beat this year it will be a team like LSU or Auburn.

Would like to see both UGA and GT do well. but

UGA-10-2 reg losses to ASU and LSU. ASU is this years USC(SEC one) game for the dawgs. Beat LSU in SEC champ. Rest of college football hang themselves after BSC screws up again. After several very good 2 loss teams miss the NC. OSU (11-1)vsUSC(12-0) in BSC-NC game. USCv s OSU regular season is close but a fine tuned end of year USC beats OSU by 50. Dawgs beat Mizzou in BSC #2 game.

GT-5-7- lose 6 straight to end the year. no bowl. Tech fans want Johnson fired.

Falconies win 4- embarrass themselves by being swept byt he NFC South. With the 3rd pick in the draft Falcons choose Michael Johnson from Tech.

    Falcons- 7-9

Ga Tech 6-6 (slow start due to offense)

Georgia 11-1 (Loss probably to Auburn. That game is at the end of a tough stretch with no week off. Tenn, Vandy, @ LSU, UF (Jax), @ Kentucky, and then @ Auburn. Three really tough games (Tenn, LSU, UF) in a 4 week stretch.

Ga Southern 9-2 or 8-3, VSU’s old coach takes a step forward. There’s the loss to UGA and then it gets tricky as always. Southern seems to every now and then beat a team it shouldn’t and lose to a team it should beat. For example, they beat Appalachian State in Boone and lost to UT-Chattanooga. Yeah I think it is time to make a serious push to move Ga Southern up to 1-A. The Sunbelt has a couple of old rivals of theirs, Troy and Middle Tenn State, but Conference USA would be better….. more difficult but better.

And just for good measure, Valdosta State will make the D-2 playoffs again this year. They need to build a stadium and move up to 1-AA.

Why ask any college fan to get involved with Falcon misery ? Why do you think we’re college fans ? When the season begins for UGA fans its not about wins and loses but recruitin. I think they will have the #1 recruting class as they have had for the past 10 years and we all see what that has done for them.
