Falcons’ never-ending season began above London
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
He was an hour outside of London when the bell began to toll. Arthur Blank was flying home from a Kenyan safari on his private plane, scheduled to land in England to refuel, when the pilot left the cockpit, a sheaf of paper in his hand.
“You need to see this,” the pilot said.
It was a transmitted copy of Michael Vick’s federal indictment. The date was July 17, 2007. The football team on which Blank had lavished so much money and care was about to unravel as completely as any football team ever has.
One year later, the Falcons owner speaks of 2007 as “the season that never ended. Every day there was another twist to the story — there was the Michael Vick story, and then there was the Bobby Petrino story. It was like someone kept adding another stick of wood to the fire.”
Then, after a pause: “But fires do burn out.”
This fire, alas, had a wickedly long tail. Within five months, Blank would find himself without both the quarterback he’d supported and befriended — some say coddled — and the head coach he’d hired for the express purpose of maximizing the quarterback’s singular skills.
Blank regards 2007 as “another reminder that even though you work hard to try to build a roster of players capable of handling the pressures of being a professional athlete both on and off the field,” the work carries no guarantee. Of Vick, he says: “On the football field, he could cope.”
Would Petrino’s system and guidance have enabled this quarterback to realize his massive potential? “Clearly the answer we felt was, ‘Yes.’ But whether he would have proved he could play at a very high level — a consistent level — we’ll never know.”
Early indications were encouraging. Vick’s offseason workouts led to in-house speculation that the Falcons could average 30 points a game, a prognostication that would have left them second to New England in scoring. But Vick never played a down for Petrino, who left under cover of darkness for Arkansas after 13 games.
What if, Blank is asked, Petrino had had Vick at his disposal and the Falcons would have started 4-3 instead of 1-6? Would the grumbling about Petrino’s methods have been silenced?
“It’s possible, but to be frank, the issues Bobby had with the players and communication started from the very beginning. … The players from the get-go felt disconnected. We would have had to win a lot of games for [pacification] to take place.”
For the owner, what was the nadir of the season without end? Receiving the indictment? Seeing training camp begin with Vick in court in Richmond, Va., and PETA protestors outside the gates at Flowery Branch? Watching Vick address the media after pleading guilty? Having Petrino bolt the day after Vick was sentenced to 23 months in jail?
“It was the day [Aug. 24] we received the document,” says Blank, referring to Vick’s pre-plea statement of facts. “A lot had been speculation up to then. … Even after the indictment, Michael was still saying, ‘I’m innocent; you’ll find that out.’ … The reality was that what Michael had been saying was not true. It was difficult when Bobby left, but I didn’t have a six-year relationship with him.”
About Vick: “People say we shouldn’t have supported the quarterback that much, but what about New England [with Tom Brady]? What about Indianapolis [with Peyton Manning]? With Michael, as spectacular as he was — not always great — with that kind of exciting player, he becomes in many ways the face of the franchise.”
The former face of the Falcons sits in a Kansas prison. A radically different team — new quarterback, new coach, new general manager — will open training camp next week. Of his reconfigured club, Blank says, “I have tremendous expectations this team will play hard and play well. … There’ll be a lot of energy, a lot of discipline. We’ll surprise a lot of people.”
Already the summer has yielded one bit of cheer. The 2008 Blank family vacation passed without untoward interruption. “We went to Italy for 10 days,” he says. “We didn’t get any pieces of paper over there.”

I truly feel that if Vick had played under Petrino, this team would have gone far in the playoffs. Our awful run defense would not have been exposed because opposingteams would have been constantly playing from behind. After reading this article, I’m starting to feel sick all over again.

My God Bradley, what is it going to take for you to actually discuss the current Falcons QB? You know Matt Ryan? I guess he has to fight or shoot someone for you to actually mention his name in a column, since you seem to think that people aren’t actually interested in his actual development.
I’m so sick of Vick this and Vick that, can Matt Ryan get any press?

So no one really sees the relevance of this article. It’s the one-year anniversary of Vick’s indictment … This time last year, the Falcons thought they were playoff contenders. Now, they could be one of the worst teams in the league. Interesting tidbits, Mr. Bradley … Blank in his air plane and such …

I think that despite everything that’s happened, we’re extremely lucky to have an owner who actually cares about the game and the team, and who’s willing to try and do the best he can to put us in a position to win. It hasn’t worked so far, but there can only be so much bad luck and he’s had it all. We’re due for good times, and this current team will bring them to us. We may not win the superbowl every year, but we’ll be competitive, the players will be happy and we won’t have thugs in the paper every couple of weeks. That suits me.

I think the Falcons have the best combination of owner, GM and coaches of any ATL franchise. This yr will establish the new system (4-12). Next yr they’ll draft OL and DL (6-10), and by the following yr they will make the playoffs (9-7).

I agree with the other posters…20 years from now we can look back at this story with the attitude of “oh yeah, remember when Vick did that…”, but now is not that time. The story’s been played out and it’s time to simply wonder what kind of organization Blank/Dimitroff/Smith are building NOW.

The loss of Vick gave me no heartburn at all. He was easily one of the poorest passers to ever put on a Falcon uniform. He couldn’t read a defense and had no touch on the ball. Running can certainly get headlines and provide pretty rushing numbers, but the Falcons would have never gone anywhere with Vick at the helm. He was figured out by the other coaches his last two years and it was only gonna get worse. Good riddance!

There’s still some relevance to the story. Apparently there’s interest too - otherwise no one would stop to read the story, let alone comment on it. Some of us out here actually miss Mike Vick. However he played during any given game, he still made the game exciting to watch. He took part in a bad business venture. He’s dealing with the repercussion of that decision. That era has already punctuated itself with a period. But, I’ll stop and read articles about Vick because I’m still interested in updates and looking forward to his return to the NFL. Good luck to the Falcons, I wish them all the success they work to achieve, and when Mike’s back on the field, in top form (it will happen folks), I’ll certainly be among the throng of fans and supporters who are still rooting for him.

I really appreciate the extra insight on some of the actual events that took place with Michael Vick indictment headline. Arthur Blank has devoted his time, energy, and money to building a respectable football franchise here in Atlanta, something fans like me have been thirsting for decades. We are the ones that supported and pulled for the team when it was not popular to do so. Now that we have great leadership in the owner, let’s give him our full support. He brought one of the most exciting and talanted quarterbacks in the league to Atlanta. He could not have imagined he would get hit with the Vick saga and the Petrino exit strategy afterwards. The past is what it is, the past. It’s time to look forward and give Arthur credit for his leadership with optimism in the new talent he has assembled. GO FALCONS!

I am actually a fan of Vick’s on the football field. Every time he had the ball I had hope something great would happen. We need to forgive Mike for his screw-ups. The man is serving a 2 year sentence in a Federal Prison. He is serving out his debt to society. I want to see him come back a reformed person and see if it is not too late for him to show his true potential. Mike was a man that needed a large dose of humility. All his life he was told he was the greatest. I believe this is what led him to act out when he had a good game and do the whole “I told you I could pass” dance. I think with his latest dose of humility he will actually listen to coaches and do the things he needs to succeed. If not, his career is over.
And by the way, no there is nothing to write about. This is the slowest sports time of the year. I guess Bradley could spend his time writing about the Atlanta Dream (if that’s there name).

Unlike the other posters, I think this is a good article to write going into this season’s training camp. You could see a terrible year coming very early into last year with “the water bottle” and I think the one year anniversary of Vick’s indictment is a good time to reflect because the comparison shows how the Falcons seem to have turned the corner.
While I don’t think 2008 will be a banner year, I do think the moves made this year were both bold and needed. In the front office, the coaching staff, and with the players, the Falcons made some hard choices that show they are serious about turning this franchise around. Whether or not these moves will work remains to be seen, but I like a lot of what I see so far. I don’t expect playoffs, but I do expect this team to exceed expectations. While I know that isn’t saying much, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Any wonder why readership is down and most fans go to SI.com and ESPN.com to get info on the team. The season starts in about 2 months - I understand this is the 1 year anniversary of the indictment (although really the one year anniversary should be when this whole mess started and investigation began) but I join the fellow posters in saying let’s start talking football and get into the nuts and bolts of the NFC South division. I’d much rather a story on the new coach or Michael Turner then this rehash.

Everyone is so down on him for what he did but he has excepted responsibility and being punished. It just shows no matter how famous and how rich if PETA is not picketing things are WAY different ie.TI. With enough weapons to finsh the Iraq war he is still attending award shows and doing communittee service. Did I mention possition of fire arms by a covicted felon? Too all the parents rushing your children out to hear TI speak ebonics about his mistakes- well good thing PETA does not care about weapons of mass destruction. still think we need vick and I think he will be a better person and player this time around. If he come back I and many other will be back at the dome. Matt I think is a good Kid but he will take 4 to 5 year to become a winning QB. Vick is paid for and he still has a big folling here in Atlanta. No way this hurt Matt it realy save him to be come a star.
This would be a win win that if you want to win ball games and stop the black out for people that can’t pay to see the game at the dome. Do we want PR are win games blank you will make that call.
As of today Vick is still a falcon and a lot of the Fan base here in Atlanta is happy about that!! Love that #7 I for give him, and I know he will not let Blank are the Fan down Again. We still need Matt I will not throw him under the bus. I hope #7 will Make #2 a Better QB with time.

Yes Mark is has been a year since Michael Vick was indicted and the media has yet to ask one decent question about this whole case. So why don’t you and other members of the drive-by media put down your pom-poms and ask the government and the NFL the following questions because inquiring minds (at least this one) would like to know:
[1] Mr. Goddell, you hired Eric Holder (former Deputy Attorney General and interim AG) to investigate dog fighting in the NFL. Why haven’t you released his report? What were his findings? Better yet, was Mr. Holder hired to “really” investigate dog fighting in the NFL or was he hired to use his vast connections in the AG’s office to make sure this case went nowhere and to protect the reputation of the NFL?
[2] To Mr. Gene Upshaw (head of the NFL Player’s Assoc): Sir, why did the NFLPA hire Billy Martin (a beltway insider and a cocktail buddy of Eric Holder) to represent Michael Vick? Is it routine for the NFLPA to hire lawyers for its players? Or was Mr. Martin suggested by Mr. Holder?
[3] To the US Attorney for the state of VA: Sir, why haven’t there been any additional indictments issued in this case? In Tony Taylor’s statement of facts he describes a fight that took place on Mr. Vick’s property that did not involve Vick’s dogs, but, were 2 dogs that were transported across state lines by 2 other individuals. He knew the name of the dogs, the amount of money that was betted, but its curious that the names of the individuals involved were left as “unknown.” Who are they Sir? And why have they not been indicted since they committed the exact same crimes as Mr. Vick?
[4] Again to the US Attorney of VA: Sir, Mr. Vick and two of the defendents stated in their statement of facts that dogfights occurred on that property from 2005 - 2207. [a] Why is it that you can provide so much detail about fights which occurred prior to 2005, but, you cannot give us any details about anything from 2005 - 2007? [b] Sir, if individuals came from various parts of the US to participate in dogfighting on Mr. Vick’s property during those years, why haven’t you issued any more indictments or sought other convictions in this case since these individuals broke the same federal laws that Mr. Vick has admitted to breaking.
[5] Judge Hudson you ordered Mr. Vick to undergo a psychiatric examination and drug counseling prior to his incarceration. And you ordered him to continue that counseling upon his release from prison. Is it just a coincidence that those are the 3 requirements that a federal inmate needs in order to participate in the drug program that will qualify him/her for early release? Did you then give him a tough sentence although he’s a first time offender for political expediency but then assured he would be eligible for early release by putting the steps in place to get him into this program? And does a person really need 3-4 years of drug counseling for marijuana?
[4] Judge Hudson, how you can accept as a “statement of fact” from federal and/or defense attorneys a statement that leaves out significant facts? Mainly, WHO are the individuals that were on Mr. Vick’s property fighting dogs — WHO ARE THEY?
So on this year of reflection Mark there is still questions that linger and in my mind cast significant doubt on Michael’s guilt. Sorry, but, when I read that the NFL hired a political hack like Eric Holder to investigate something I became immediately suspicious.

To By please…PETA is not an organization that is fighting mass destruction. PETA is an animal rights organization and if you don’t like animals then that is you. Don’t hate PETA because you don’t believe their cause. PETA is not breaking any laws. Vick did break the law and you could care less. It takes a scum to know a scum. It takes an inhumane person to like an inhumane person…so yes that is you. And Mike Vick is famous and rich too and didn’t give a rat’s poop about you or any of his fans but I guess you missed that. I guess you like making scum rich. He didn’t have the character to handle his fame and that is his fault - not his neighborhood or his home boys. By the way Vick listens to TI but then you support Vick who is getting special treatment in prison and is protected because of his celebrity status, so it really isn’t a punishment. He doesn’t deserve to return to football. He had his chance.

someone actually posted that we need Vick back!! How awesomely stupid. The only time he was good was with Reeves. Then he got his contract and didn’t care anymore. PEOPLE, LET IT GO!!! We have three really good QB’s this year and that should be an interesting battle. The receivers should be better this year with Finn comming back. If we can get Horn some looks I like this corp very much. The O-line should be able to put up a good fight but the defense, again, is shaky. Line backers are fine though I wish Brooking was back in his normal position. Safety and CB…As my grandmother would say, “OY VEY!!” If we can stop the run early, maybe we can send some extra help downfield. We may or may not make the playoffs, but I would love to see us finish with a winning record and at least 2nd in the division.

Who can spot the egregious violation of standard English usage in the sentence below? Apparently, neither Mark Bradley nor his copyeditor (is there one?) is up to the task. Here’s a hint: look for the bold type to find the error.
“What if, Blank is asked, Petrino had had Vick at his disposal and the Falcons would have started 4-3 instead of 1-6? Would the grumbling about Petrino’s methods have been silenced?”
Don’t know the correct usage? Replace “would have” with “had.”

Marie - Incredibly interesting questions you have regarding the indictment. And I’m sure Vick’s high powered legal team asked and answered these questions BEFORE Vick pled guilty to the charges against him. If Vick felt like the charges against him were false or the gov’t couldn’t prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, Vick and his legal team could have raised these questions AT TRIAL and had a jury of his peers (which he would have played a role in selecting) decide. And he could have raised these questions during an appeals process. Marie - the fact of the matter is Vick is in jail because he pled guilty and admitted to doing the things for which he was charged - he didn’t have to do this, he could have fought it but he CHOSE not to. There is no conspiracy here, it is what it is. Now is the sentence he serving too long, probably when folks who batter, rob and do other heinous crimes are freed in the same time but blame the mandatory federal sentencing guidelines on that. Who creates the law? Our Congress. So Marie, I hope you voted in Tuesday’s primary and will vote again in November and bring the same passion you have for Vick to our political process (something tells me you don’t vote).

More than anything (other than the dogs killed) I hate this all happened with Vick because of all the judgemental and hypocritical hate that spewed from all this. Its like certain people are celebrating this tragic event as a reason to point a finger Yes, Vick brought this on himself, yes it was stupid, and yes he is human. But for all the ugly vent remarks I read in this paper everyday there are alot of folks who need to look in the mirror and go to church. The hateful comments made toward this man is ridiculously foul. Making the same point over and over about what we know- Vick screwed up big-time and using it to make all young black males out to be thugs then turn around and say it is not about racism is sickening. For all the hate spewed at people who just hopes Vick gets his life together is even worse. Anyone saying anything in that direction are always called names and for what? Whats wrong with praying that someone will overcome their failures? I feel the same way with Josh Hamilton and feel great that he overcame his drug and alcohol addiction, but I won’t be hated for supporting that and yes I know that is not as bad as killing animals but it could have been. What I’m trying to say is that to spew foul comments and hate on this guy or anyone supporting Vick is going to be just as bad on judgement day as what Vick did. In His eyes, a sin is a sin. Learn to forgive and stop the hate spewing- you’ll feel better.

Free Mike Vick!!! Free Mike Vick!!! Free Mike Vick!!! Free Mike Vick!!!
I am sick and tired of how the Plastic Man (i.e., A. Blank) claims he was Vick’s friend, when in reality Vick was an employee that received probably too much favoritism from his boss. Vick was pampered and knew what he could get away with because Plasto help spoil him along with media folks who are always quick to jump on a bandwagon of the next whoisgoingtodoit.
Free Mike Vick!!! Free Mike Vick!!!
Vick is in jail for dogfighting. Good thing he could put one those pits in a fight with UGA before he passed, they may have LYNCHED him.
I look forward to the day when Vick returns to Prime Time’s House scampering down the sidelines headed for a TD for an opposing team, and he does “Prime Time” Dance and taught at the Falcon bench.
Free Mike Vick!!! Free Mike Vick!!!

Can’t believe so many people are saying this isn’t newsworthy. Monday morning editors. Do you see the number of comments on this story? That means people are STILL reading stories about Vick, including me. Blank’s thoughts on this matter one year later is enticing.

To A Falcon fan walks into a bar: Man, I think you had about 10 to many drinks while you were there!
On Vick - After he does about 12 more montrhs, they will parole him (just watch). Supposedly he’s been playing football on the prison team. I thought the idea was to punish the prisoner, not punish the prison!
If he gets out and still has good legs, bring him back on the team at 5% of his prior salary (and garnish that until he pays off what he cost the team); keep in in a cell at Flowery Branch; except for practice or games, and use him as a running back. He won’t have to read defenses or throw the ball, only run the darn thing! Who knows, he might even score i or 2 touchdowns per season?

I pray that Mike will be released soon and will play football again. Everyone deserves another chance. I know what he did was wrong, but how about the abused and killed women in this country that goes on each and every day. Let’s be a little more forgiving. To Nimbooda, NoBody or whoever you are: My knowledge would crush yours so don’t ever refer to my as being stupid. Also, IF you read my post correctly I never declared Michael Vick innocent of anything. I am simply raising questions to the extent of his guilt or if there may be other NFL players that are guilty based on all the information that has been made available being the media.
To Keeping it Real: I do have a life and as long as there is my breath in this “fine” body of mine; I will always raise questions when there are questions to be raised about the things our government is doing. Our founding fathers would expect no less of any American citizen.
To GeorgiaYankeeFan: You suspect wrong — I am a voting American and you’re WRONG about mandatory sentencing for federal crimes. No such thing exists. Federal judges can use their own discretion as long as they are within the federal sentencing guidelines to sentence a defendent based on the charges he is guilty of committing. Why else would Martha Stewart, Lil Kim, and Scooter Libby (whose sentence was commuted) all 1st time convictions, receive far less time for crimes that are considered far more serious than what MV did.

If I might say a word or two: Today is indeed the anniversary of one of the biggest (and strangest) developments in the history of Atlanta sports. I believed that Arthur Blank’s reflections on a harrowing season that started badly and got exponentially worse were worth seeking. And I hope they were worth reading.

Ok. Let’s talk about how many INT’s Matt”our savior” will throw this year or next. My guess is he will lead the league in this category.

I remember watching that Minnesota game and seeing him split 2 defenders and what about the dive at the goal line where everyone thought his knee had touched and replay after replay shows he scored.
He was magic.
Michael Vick alone took us to lofty heights and then he took us to the bottom.
Dan Reeves had a handle on the situation.
There was Mr. Blank’s first fart.
Then a little boy came to town and instead of turning Vick into a west coast quarterback the little boy was changed into a gangsta rapper. I bet you didin’t know that under his shirts the little boy wears bling bling bling. A closet rapper.
Fart number 2.
Next we learn that Magic is not able to audible at the line. A quarterback that can’t change the play at the line. Whats with that. Really. Is the Boy power hungry, does Magic not work before the snap or is Magic just stupid.
Fart number 3.
Alas the Boy is gone and his rap career flounders. Mr PeeTreeno, oh little man with brain so big. Mr Peetreeno come teach my Magic to work.
Fart number 4.
I’m excited to see the Magic but one day the Magic went to the dogs. Mr Peetreeno, like that cartoon dog goes,
“Which way did he go” “Which way did he go” “Which way did he go”
The Magic is gone.
Fart number 5.
Now we’re told a gas reliever was taken.
I sure hope so. It stinks around here.

I never loved Michael to begin. You hear the word spectacular in the article. He was spectacularly inconsistent. At times great fun to watch - at other times frustrating as could be.
Matt Ryan is going to be way more consistent but perhaps not spectacular. Maybe more like a Brady or Carson Palmer. I can live with that and so we no longer have to tolerate the “hip-hop world” of the Falcons, Mike Vick, MeAngelo Hall and the rest of the hotshots. This season should be a real breath of fresh air!!

Mark Bradley, every true Falcon fan is painfully aware of the sad saga of Vick, Petrino and the disatrous 2007 season. I see no reason to keep discussing this matter and bringing up skeletons that ought to be laid to rest. Vick is gone. Despite the false hope of his diehard fans, he will never be a Falcon again. Petrino is coaching at Arkansas. He never should have been hired to coach in the NFL in the first place. All that’s in the past. Now we have a new franchise QB, Matt Ryan, who was the third overall pick in the most recent draft. He possesses a boatload of potential, has a great attitude, and has stayed out of trouble. We have a new head coach, Mike Smith, who has already proven that he can coach at the professional level. We have a new GM, Thomas Dimitroff, who is at least partially responsible for putting together the dynasty in NE. Smith and Dimitroff have already just about completely revamped this Falcons team. I can almost guarantee you that the 2008 Falcons will be immensely more competitive than that joke of a team was last year. So let’s forget about the past and focus on the present, please!

Where to begin? First, you’re wrong to say that there is one and only one accepted spelling for copyeditor. It is an issue of usage style, not hard-and-fast right and wrong. Don’t believe me? Look it up yourself at [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copy_editing], where the first line indicates that there are several acceptable spellings of copyedting.
Second, although you are clearly revelling in your little “gotcha” moment, the fact that you think you caught me in an error (although you didn’t) does not invalidate my contention that Bradley’s usage error is particularly awful. Even if I had misspelled every other word in my post, the fact remains that misusing “would have” in that way is a serious error that has no place in a newspaper that is supposed to have been written and edited by news professional.

Maria,
Sorry. My comment was inappropriate. I am just tired of blogs about MV that gives some of the Vick haters another opportunity to spread their venom at him. I too believe that there are more serious crimes out there than dog fighting. The sentence was ridiculous in comparison. You know , I know and the others know that Mr. Ryan will never bring the excitement that Vick did when he touched the ball. Best to you and your “fine” body.

Mike Vick fan here but not a fan of his actions. If he comes back to play I will root for him but not against the Falcons because ATL is home. People say that Vick was bad but last year every QB on the roster was also bad. I think it was more the line and the piece of this and piece of there offense that was “created” under Mora than Vick.
Matt Ryan - Have no idea how he will fare. Never watched much college ball. I didn’t know who Vick was until we selected him and didn’t think much of him until after a couple games he started.
I read where someone thought Matt maybe closer to a Palmer or a Brady. Maybe, maybe not. He’s in the pros now but I hope he is like a Brady/Palmer/Manning. Go Falcons!!!

I agree whole-heartly with Darrin “The Vent King”. Many of you need to take a look in the mirror. No one on this earth is perfect. All of us have done things that are wrong. Made bad decisions and had to pay the consequences of those actions. God has forgiven us time and time again. Learn to forgive. Vick made a poor decision but he does not deserve to ridiculed for it for the rest of his life. He is paying for his actions. He deserves a second chance, even as a Falcon. Don’t get me wrong, Matt Ryan does deserve a shot but he still needs time to develop. No man is without sin. Stop being so judgemental. Mr. Blank I think (along with many other Vick fans) you should give him another shot. Stop spreading so much hate and negativity. To: Nimbooda: you said it takes a inhumane person to like an inhumane person: I”m not inhumane. You are to hate the sin not the sinner. He’s not an inhumane person, just a misguided individual. It’s time to forgive, just as God has forgiven us time and time again. No sin is greater than another. Go Falcons, Vick I pray for you & wish you well.

Vick was not our answer shure he spawned a slew of tripple F’s! (fake falcon fans) But Vick was dunn along time ago once tampa showed everyone how to defend him he was done! He would get frustrated and give up, he lacked the will to win that was needed. What about the O line injuries last year thats what killed us. Were basicly the same team we were when we were making those playoff runs with a real Coach a passing QB that is what a QB is supposed to do right?, a better RB corps, upgraded LB group, and a real kicker who can hit from deep. love ya mort but youve seen your better years. worst to first baby GO FALCONS!

For Crying Out Loud ajc, let the past be the past. You guys wreak for news coverage, this makes one full year of REHASHING one story.
Other than the Vick story do you guys comprehend anything?
I salute the ajc for pointing out that Vick was a HUGE FAILURE, but everything you write is a copy of everything you have published for a freaking YEAR!
Even the rascits are tired of this garbage, the huggers are sick of it. Mark, after your article just last week on this VERY SAME THING you would think the ajc could figure this out.
Vick is a liar. Vick is another black failed human. Vick is in Prison, Vick won’t ever be a Falcon again. Vick ripped everbody off. Vick blew the largest NFL contract ever in 3 seasons. Vick is bankrupt. Vick is an animal cruelty disaster. Vick is a public relations nightmare. Vick failed his family. Vick’s cars were unpaid and picked up for collection. Vick’s restaurant went kaflooey. Vick failed his team. Vick failed his owner. Vick’s brother is just as sorry. Marcus is arrested for DUI again. Vick is on drugs. Vick is getting early release for a drug program he has NEVER entered to date.
Mark Bradley, get over it! Everybody in the US knows these things by now, go do some work for a change and write something insightful that has not been published a million times.
Does the ajc actually pay you guys to copy and paste this Vick garbage over and over and over?
For God’s sake, and Atlanta’s sake, get some new material. We know Vick failed in everything he touched.

Mark Bradley, There was not ONE WORD of your article that has not been printed hundreds of times over the past year, the Kenya return trip and everything else. If anybody finds anything new then in the article you wrote they must have spent the past year in a cave.
A better story would have been a smaller “footnote about the anniversary” and then an update of PROGRESS made since then but that would be too positive for the ajc wouldn’t it. I will wager that you wouldn’t offend so many readers off by taking the time to actualy write something insightful vs this reoprinted garbage about the GLOWING FAILURE that Vick is today. Wake up ajc, during this depressing financial times, your readers could stand something different from the daily TEAM BASHING and negativity the ajc dishes out. Do something to “brighten somebody’s day” or inform us of something we don’t already know. sheesh, we need a real “NEWS”paper in this town…

PETA is a joke. They got in trouble for inappropriately euphonizing and dumping dozens of dogs in dumpsters in North Carolina about 2 years ago! It made made big news here in Va. Marie is entitled to her opinion just like everyone else is in here. I think she just wants to know why no one else was indicted for committing the same crimes as Vick did. Truth is Marie, they are the folks who ratted Mike out and they got deals/immunity for doing so. That is why Mike is in the big house and his so-called-friends/associates/partners/family members are still roaming the streets free. Mike should have made friends with the same folks that are friends with Barry Bonds (some of them are serving time because they WON’T rat Bonds out). I’m a life long ATL sports fan and I always pull for ATL teams (I live in Va because I’m in the Navy, but born in Southeast Gawga). Gooooo Falcons!!!!

And as far as Matt Ryan goes, he will be good when we get a line to protect him. I personally wanted to draft Dorsey, but Ryan isn’t a bad pick. I thought we would have address the issues on the Offensive and defensive lines before we drafted a young QB (who with little to no mobility will get killed behind that O-line). My worst fear is that Ryan will look like Colt Brennan did against the Georgia D in the sugar bowl. Like Tom Brady did in the Super Bowl against the G-men’s D. Both of those guys got destroyed. And to think that the Pats actually have a pretty good line. Imagine Ryan, a rookie, behind that horrible Falcons line against fast NFL defenses…the games will be rated “R” because it will be too graphic for kids under 17 without parental consent.

One last thing reguarding MV7. I had always heard that at VA Tech and in ATL under Mora, Vick was not allowed to audible or check down but once or twice in the passing game. If the play wasn’t there right away he was told to basically run and make something happen with his atheletic ability. I don’t know if they didn’t think he could be an effective passer and read defenses or they just thought that they had a better chance of scoring when Mike created something out of nothing. Mora built that offensive line to run block, not to pass block. At least that’s the way I’ve heard it.
