First, and 10 reasons Dogs will rank there

No sense mincing words. Georgia will win the BCS title, and here are 10 reasons why.

1. They’ll be ranked loftily from the get-go. LSU could lose twice and still play for the 2007 BCS title because the college football world had grown accustomed to the Tigers at or near the top. And pollsters snubbed Georgia in the final balloting because, even though folks kept voting the Bulldogs higher and higher, nobody had given them much consideration as a national champion.

2. Their schedule will keep them visible and therefore viable. Back to LSU: The Tigers played big games every single month. Even though they lost twice, they kept getting chances to redeem themselves. Georgia has South Carolina and Arizona State and Alabama in September, Tennessee and LSU in October, Florida and Auburn in November. If the Bulldogs lose only once, they’ll be playing in Miami in January.

3. Even if the Bulldogs lose a big road game in the Central Time Zone, they could well get a second chance. If we assume that the loss will come either at LSU or at Auburn, we can also assume that a rematch in the SEC championship game in the Georgia Dome would favor the team from Georgia.

4. Florida’s hold has been broken. The World’s Largest Outdoor Whatchamacallit runs in streaks, and the Bulldogs are about to start one. Mark Richt’s celebration-on-demand changed the dynamics of a series that had seen his side come to believe it couldn’t beat the hated Gators. (Losing 15 of 17 can have that effect.) The Bulldogs now know otherwise. So do the Gators.

5. Knowshon Moreno is the nation’s best back, and his presence brings balance to Georgia’s offense. There’s nothing wrong with throwing the ball strategically, but it’s worth noting that Georgia’s best seasons under Richt — the breakthrough of 2002 and last year’s revival — have come when it had a 1,000-yard back. And let’s not forget Caleb King. (ajc.com bloggers haven’t.)

6. Matthew Stafford throws better when he throws less. It’s simple math, really: If Stafford looses 30 passes a game, assume five will be forced. If he grows accustomed to handing the ball off and throws 10 fewer passes, figure his completion percentage — only 55.7 last season — will rise to a more suitable level.

7. Mark Richt has been pointing toward the national title since 2002, but he hasn’t yet had the right team at the right moment. This time he will, and he’ll know how to handle it better than in 2004, when a gifted bunch of Bulldogs peaked too soon.

8. Willie Martinez gets no credit — just results. Georgia fans still bemoan the loss of Brian VanGorder, but the unloved Martinez has returned the defense to unyielding eminence. Remember how many splendid defenders LSU fielded last season — Dorsey, Highsmith, Steltz, Jackson? Those Tigers yielded 33 touchdowns in 14 games. Georgia yielded 28 in 13.

9. Sophomore linebacker Rennie Curran is about to get huge, figuratively speaking. He isn’t big — 5 feet 11 — but he’s everywhere. Curran made his first start against Florida, and over the final six games he had 36 solo tackles and three sacks. You won’t find him on early All-American lists, but you’ll know him by season’s end.

10. Uga VI is gone but not forgotten, and there exists no deeper feeling than the memory of a beloved dog. Who among us didn’t get teary-eyed over Old Yeller? What red-blooded Bulldog wouldn’t clothesline Urban Meyer’s grandmother to dedicate a posthumous championship to this fallen critter?

true for the most part, as i never believed a 2 loss team would be declared champions. (so much for a play-off system). but, after living in gainesville for 5 years, betting on the puppies every year, an losing, gator fans are as obnoxious as dawg ones are!!! didn’t bet last year, was tired of losing money. but yeh, i’m going adrift here, when all the dawgs future boss’s from north avenue, upset them this year, i’ll just quietly chuckle, and give sht to all da rednecks that chew baccy an have G flags hanging on their porch next to the confederate flag. that was quite entertaining to read! UGAG is going to be the most hyped up talked about and most importantly, OVER RATED PIECE OF GARBAGE football team in all of college football this season. They have a nice large target on their backs and everyone is out to get them this year. The tide will roll over them, LSU will whip them, Spurrier will kill them, the gators are going to DESTROY them, and the streak will end this year! TO HELL WITH GEORGIA! Good riddens to uga VI

I hope you’re right, Mark, but that schedule’s a bear. We’ll know more (as we always do) after Jax. I think a two-loss UGA that wins the SEC would have a good shot if we have a situation like last year, but it would be a long shot. As every former nat’l champ can attest, not only do you have to be great, but you have to get a few lucky bounces your way too. We’ll need ‘em to get to Miami in January. As always, winning the SEC in my book is paramount, after that if the national championship (American Football Idol) is available - go get it, boys. Luv ya Dawgs!

The bigger the hype the bigger they fall. I honestly don’t believe they can win it all b/c the schedule is insane. I think Spurrier & Vandy could be the games that sneak up on ugaY. I know Spurrier got ‘em last Yr. & the revenge factor, but w/ Ariz. St. the next week, and LSU after Vandy, those 2 could be calssic look-ahead games.

Tech is completely a ? mark, they could be decent, or attrocious.

It doesn’t matter whether Georgia wins a national championship or even an SEC championship, as Mark Bradley already annointed them the “standard bearer of the SEC” 2-3 years ago, shortly before they lost 5 consecutive games against the SEC East.

Take Mark’s word for it, the rest of the SEC doesn’t exist when it comes to football, it’s just that most years one of the others acts as placeholder for the Standardbearers.

Sure hope it pans out this way.

There are a number of variables that a national title team has to have. The jury’s still out on some of them, but Georgia’s got most of them in place for a run. Talent? Check. Coaching? Check. Leadership? From what I understand, check. Emotional maturity? The jury is still out, but the team seemed pretty mature by the end of last season. Scheduling? A bear, but not insurmountable. Luck? That’s a variable one cannot control. It remains to be seen whether Georgia will be lucky or snakebit with regard to injuries, weird little fumbles, etc. All of those things can play a role here.

As for the specifics of the schedule:

Most likely losses are to LSU and Auburn—likely one or the other, not both. One ofthose teams will likely win the West, so a chance at revenge would be possible.

Florida is the third most likely loss, but if the Gators keep losing DBs (another one went down for th eyear this past week) from their already slipshod secondary, this game could be over before kickoff. They’ll have to play some D to beat Georgia this season. Doesn’t matter what Tebow’s doing (unless he’s playing free safety)—no one with a weak defense will be able to stop the Dawgs.

South Carolina will not beat Georgia this season. They shouldn’t have beaten them last year (Georgia was flat), and the Dawgs will be greatly improved on offense this season. This game will not be close. In fact, I will say right now that Steve Spurrier will never beat Georgia again in his career. It’s over. Visor Boy should’ve stayed retired. His rep is flaking away bit by bit as long as he lingers in the Graveyard of Coaches. The talent gap will be so great between Georgia and South Carolina the next three years that there will be no chance of a Gamecock victory over that span. And then Stevie Boy will either retire, cutting his losses, or die of sheer embarassment.

And Tech?

Tech and Notre Dame will have roughly the same record this year. And that’s not good for either team. The rebuilding Jackets will be lucky to win 6 games this season. My pick is 5-7, which will be their worst record in over a decade. Only nine starters return, and with a new offensive system and a new DC, it’s going to be a long season on the Flats. And a streak will end. It just won’t be the streak Tech fans want to end.

The Dawgs will win again over the Jackets. That streak will continue.

HOWEVER,

Tech’s record of 11 consecutive bowl invitations will end this season. The Jackets will spend the holidays this season watching football on TV and talking about next year.

Again.

By Uncle Dave

July 13, 2008 6:01 PM | Link to this

Mark: You have to make predictions, and I hope you are right, but you assume an awful lot! I also hope that none of the team is bothering to read your column! To be sure they have a chance, but only if they fight and claw their way though every minute of every game. You sound like a fantasy football captain in your analysis. Let’s join the real world shall we.

One of the spots in the big game is most likely going to the winner of the USC/Ohio State game. It is likely that the winner runs the table thereafter. That leaves one more opening… but for who?

If Richt’s team goes undefeated, nobody would keep them out of the game… but the odds of that are extremely low. Just for argument’s sake, say they go on the road and beat Arizona state and South Carolina back to back (neither of those is a given). They still have to beat Tennessee, Florida, Alabama, LSU and a very tough Auburn team that , while young, may just be peaking by the end of the season… I would howl at the moon with everyone else if all of that happened, but I cannot assume such a fate because they look good on paper. It is not impossible to do, but it will not magically unfold just because everyone and their mother keeps telling these guys how great they are.

Your assumption that they are going to automatically beat Florida is absurd for obvious reasons… that game is going to be a real down and dirty battle. I doubt very seriously if dancing in the end zone last year is going to win the game this year! They better be able to throw the ball and stop tim Tebow in his candidacy for a second Heisman.

To be sure, Florida showed that it could be done several years ago when everyone said their schedule was too tough and they went all the way, but an absence of injuries and some good luck would have to come into play. If the Dawgs lose to Florida, it is likely the Gators go all the way. Do not count LSU and Auburn out of it either. The winner of their game will have something to say about the championship as well. I like your optimism… but let’s just worry about not losing the first game (or losing any more players before kickoff) and then we can move on to the second… and so on.

By Spoon

I would agree with all that reasoning, but would throw out there one thing that could stumble the dogs and there run at the title. That is simply another SEC team doing the same thing, what if that one team is Florida or Tennesse? Georgia loses that one game and the other team o only lose one then we have another tie going to the winner over Georgia and UGA is again shut out of the the SEC title game. That doesn’t mean a lock out of the BCS title game but it wouldn’t be good either. The other is like some have predicted that Georgia will stumble at Auburn. And Auburn could run their schedule with a possible stumble at West Virginia. So you could have two one loss team with the Title game on the line in Atlanta assuming that there aren’t several major teams that are undefeated left. Wouldn’t that cool to know that the winner advances and the loser doesn’t? Lol damn this going to be a great year for the SEC…we should love it.

  • It is about F’ing time UGA plays a tough schedule. It is an absolute disgrace that the pups have not gone outside of the eastern timezone for a non conference game since 1960. that is almost 50 years. About freaking time!!!
  • What is your damn point. The pups will most likely lose to BOTH and wont make it to ATL anyway.
  • HA HA HA HA HA HA. Win one game when the heisman trophy winner is playing about 50 % and somehow we are all supposed to know that UGA is going to start dominating Florida????????????? Your stupidity amazes me. Just enjoy your streak of one for a few more months dog fans.
  • yes Knowshon is good but the best in the country might be a stretch. Caleb King has not PROVEN a single thing YET.
  • 55.7 % completion and some of you idiots are saying he could be in the heisman race??????????????? need I say more?
  • This is the same exact thing that the entire IDIOTIC dog nation has been saying for almost 30 years now. 8.he gets plenty of credit
  • who cares???????????
  • if all you damn UGA dolts would do everyone a favor and help out the environment and go shed your tears over the lakes so they would fill back up it would be GREATLY appreciated.
  • The pups go 9-3 and go to Capital One bowl and suddenly 09/10 will be the year of the national championship for the puppies. That is of course what you will write Mr. Bradley after you come up with some fabulous excuses for us all to read why does not win it all in 08/09.

Are the Dawgs good…… sure, but they’re schedule is no tougher than many schools in the SEC each year. The fact that they have to go to LSU has them frazzled. I said last year that having so many freshmen starting could be a help. They were too dumb to be scared of UF. 5- Agree. 6- Agree, somewhat. Stafford was a sophmore last year. Towers said that He looks to be in the besr shape of His time at UGA. Stafford worked on His delivery a lot during the off season. He should improve as a matter of course. Having A. J. I have no idea what is going to happen this year. Nobody does. If it were up to me we wouldn’t have preseason polls. They are a waste of time and meaningless. But if you’re going to have preseason polls and if you’re going to be objective about it, you’ve got to have Georgia pretty darned high. They return 17 starters from an 11-2 team. The hype is justified. It isn’t Georgia fans putting all of these preseason polls together. And when the preseason AP and coaches polls come out it won’t be Georgia fans that have us in the top 3, if not #1. So all of you crybabies p!ssing in your milk over Georgia’s preseason love just need to take a chill pill. It will all work itself out one way or the other. If everybody wants to talk about overrated, why don’t we talk about how Florida was a preseason top 5 team last year. And then we can talk about how Florida went on to beat only one ranked opponent the entire season and lose four games. Then we can talk about how Florida is once again a top 5 preseason team this year, despite HUGE question marks about its defense and lack of a running back. So yeah, if Florida fans want to talk about overrated I’m game. Bring it. Florida is the very definition of overrated.

    OK, red & black, doggie fans accuse Tech fans of living in the past…when were those five mythical national titles? I just lashed our crazy Tech fans (not all of them are) for being a bit unrealistic, by the same token, uga fans talking trash to uf is about the same thing.

    uga won what? Twice in 15 years over the Gators and you want to try and brag about owning uf over five decades? get a grip man. My advice to you is to brag about beating the gator last year. uga looks great this year. You really don’t need to bring up the past. Play to your strengths if you are going to trash talk.

    Again TO HELL WITH GEORGIA!

    You can tell that UGA is really gonna be good because all the p** Tech fans with pale faces and hairy legged wives show up online to try to bother the DawgNation. It’s much akin to the Boyscouts trying to pick a fight with the Marines, but hey, ya gotta admire their…well..their..sorry, nothing to admire. Now you little Jackets go find a sport you are good at. I hear they are trying to make the tickle pile an Olympic Event. Good luck Tick Nation.

    it is still july and acrimony toward each others college football teams is unrelenting.

    who knows what is going to happen, NO ONE,BUT if the posts are any indication, it will be a long season and many upset people because there is only one championship in each conference and one for the national championship.

    georgia looks strong on paper,but anything can and will happen so sit back and enjoy,because nobody knows for sure!

    i would not be surprised if alabama and south carolina are not the surprise of the SEC,but we will know soon enough, and NO, i am not a fan of any of the above mention teams.

    These UF guys on this blog need a serious reality check. For one thing, returning seven starters from last year’s defense is not a good thing when you take into account the number of times they got torched. I saw them in the Cap One Bowl and it wasn’t pretty. And they can’t seriously believe that UF has any advantage whatsoever in terms of talent level. It’s rather obvious that both teams have top-drawer athletes. The differences are in coaching style.
    They are welcome to have Urban Meyer at UF school; I don’t begrudge them a bit. I’m as excited about CMR now as the day UGA hired him. The record speaks for itself and the titles will come.

    Thanks for the nice summertime cfb morsel to get us thru another day, Mark. Too bad so many morons degrade this site with their garbage comments that are completely void of any logic or semblance of reality.
    Do Gator fans really wanna talk about hype is right! The gator/tebow hype machine is ranked #1 in Athlon and Phil Steele right now despite the fact that they were LAST IN THE SEC IN PASS D last year and gave up 25.5 ppg! Now they are counting on freshmen safeties and freshman DL to come in and start in the SEC and lead them to a title??? LMFAO!!! Defense wins championships not draws, pitches and chuckin it long. UGA, LSU, AUB and Mich all made UF pay the price for trading route runners for pass protectors and blitzed the pocket and beat their butts! Now so many DCs are going to blitz the house that Tebow will be lucky to even make it to Nov 1st, unless they discover why the fullback was invented. Martinez has more sub 4.4 and 4.3 guys on “D” than you can shake a stick at, you wanna challenge us in space? Go right ahead, you’re walking right into the lions den! All the spread is is the run and shoot repackaged with a mobile QB. This fad gimmicke flag fball BS offense will be run out of the league. LONG LIVE THE POWER-I BABY!!! This very strong UGA coaching staff trots out an even stronger talent laden roster that finished #2 in the country last year and returns 17 starters. This squad has size and depth in the trenches, speed and depth everywhere else and several difference making FREAKS sprinkled on top for good measure. In this teams last six games they DESTROYED EVERYONE by double digits, averaging nearly 40ppg. Noone wanted any part of playing the Dawgs at the end of the year - NOONE!!! And for good reason b/c Moreno is unstoppable and he forces defenses to creep up and leave themselves vulnerable to the deep ball - which Stafford is perfectly suited to deliver.
    Bring on this schedule! When we run thru it like a buzzsaw none will be able to deny the Dawgs place in history. So keep crying crybabies because your tears are delicious like fine wine. Hmmmm…
    SEE YA IN MIAMI CRYBABIES!!! GO DAWGS!!!

    Dawgs will be good - but Florida will win SEC East. Gator defense will be better -offense will be unbelievable as long as Tebow stays healthy.

    TN is not getting any love - which makes them dangerous - I think GA/TN is 50/50 on runner up.

    Tech will be suck at times this year - and do some good things…a transition year. Will have to eat humble pie as the Dawgs will kick our tail. Johnson will get it going - look at out!!!!!

    UF Fans

    Enough about 15 out of 18. Some of the boys now playing were pooping their diapers when UF began the streak. Let’s look over the past 4 years where some of the coaches and current players have been involved. The record is 2-2. Nobody owns anyone. Also, stop whining about an “injured” Tebow. He had a “bruised” non-throwing shoulder. He’s a wuss if he can’t deal with that. If he’s so good he should have been able to use his non-bruised legs to avoid some of the 6 sacks. UGA and Michigan showed what UF is all about. Urban “legend” Meyer and his boy toy Tebow are way overhyped.

    The dawgs are have the potential to be a great team, they just have to go out and earn it. CMR has done a great job of building championship caliber teams. He has brought in a lot of talent on the field and some great coaches. This could be a story book season if the ball bounces our way and the rest of the team stays out of trouble.

    And all fifteen of those games the sorry scared little gators needed to make sure that they had their bye week right before J-ville so they could rest up, watch film and tinker with their offense. The dawgs won the two games inwhich both teams had one week to prepare and of course rubbed the gators noses in it with our own bye week. So the gators havent beaten the Dawgs without the luxury of an extra bye week for nearly two decades!!! Thats a tainted streak - thats a BS streak!!! I cant wait to go to Jville and watch those blacked out jerseyed Dawgs rub timmys nose in it again!!! Thats right, we are home this year and you'd better believe we're going to BLACK OUT JAX BABY!!! Word has it UF has had to do 174 reps of everything in the weight room the entire off season which happens to be the yards knowshon gained on them in 07. Also, banners of the dogs dancing in the endzone hang all over the UF Football Facility. Georgia better have it strapped on for Jax if they want to even sniff ATL.

    10 REASONS WHY GEORGIA WON’T EVEN WIN THE SEC EAST:

    10)G eorgia’s schedule is the toughest in the SEC, probably the country;

    9) Matt Stafford throws almost as many interceptions as TDs;

    8) Every team in the SEC must win close games…Georgia is unproven at the field goal kicking position.

    7) Key OL players will be missing at start of season along with FB Brandon Southerland;

    6) Georgia will get every team’s best game since Georgia is picked to win it all;

    5) First things first….Georgia is just 5-6 WITHIN THEIR OWN DIVISION the last two seasons…

    To paraphrase Jim Mora…..

    National Championship???

    We’re talking National Championship???

    4) Where’s the depth??? Dawg fans should start cringing anytime an injury occurs at WR, RB, FB, OL, and DE.

    3) The gimmicks are gone…

    Blackout - Done. Stomping on Vandy logo - Done. Unsportsmanlike taunting in endzone - Done.

    Really, besides an all out brawl ala his Miami days, what does Richt do for an encore???

    2) Georgia will lose two years in a row to an unranked Gamecock team, dropping Georgia out of the top 10 and making the climb back to #1 or #2 too daunting;

    1) Mark Bradley said Georgia would win it all, therefore they have no chance…

    By jc_dawgs

    Ga to go 11-2 this year. The losses will be at LSU and at Aub by a combined 7 pts.

    Ga will roll up big numbers against UF. UF’s defense will still @#$% big time.

    GA will obtain revenge against UT and it wont be pretty for the Vols. Compton will be looking through his earhole by half time with a face full of Sanford stadium turf. He’ll be claiming that he’s Batman by games end.

    Ga will take ASU seriously and it will show in Tempe as the Dawgs get the job done with ease. ASU’s defense has no idea whats coming.

    Ga defeats Aub in the sec champ game as the dome is filled with red and black supporters.

    With 2 loses…I cant say for sure that the Dawgs will be in the BCS. But they will again be the best team on paper as they were last year.

    Go Dawgs!
