This blog has moved! Yes, already!

As of Thursday, Feb. 12, this little blog has relocated to a new home on AJC.com. It’s the same newspaper, the same Web site and the same writer (feel free to groan) — there’s just a new URL.

New features: Bigger type, more graphics, comments that load 10 times faster and a larger and more recent photo that makes me look pretty doggone old. I think you’ll like it (the blog, not the photo). But I am, as we know too well, often wrong.

Home > Mark Bradley > Archives > 2008 > July > 10 > Entry

Hey Mike, where’s the money?

On Dec. 23, 2004, Michael Vick signed a 10-year contract extension that was to bring him $130 million. On July 7, 2008, Vick filed for bankruptcy, citing debts ranging from $10 million to $50 million.

I have a question: Where’d it go?

Let’s stipulate that Vick didn’t receive all of the $130 million - he played only two of the 10 years - but the deal also included a $37 million signing bonus, most of which he has been allowed to keep. Let’s also recall that Vick signed for $62 million over six seasons after being drafted in 2001. And let’s not forget endorsements.

So, to recap: Two record contracts in the span of 3 1/2 years, followed by bankruptcy in 2008.

Where’d it go?

I’d really like to know. How do you go through that much that fast? Bad investments? (Certainly we know about the property he bought on Moonlight Road in Smithfield, Va.) Too much travel? (Didn’t his deal with AirTran provide free flights?) Too many lavish purchases? (Obviously he ran up some hefty legal bils.) Too many unsavory friends? (Well, yes.) A sudden downturn in earning status? (Well, duh.)

But even with the worst spending habits and the grabbiest associates in the history of mankind, wouldn’t it be tough to blow through earnings that surely topped $100 million and to do it by the time you turn 28? How do you manage that? Where’d it go?

I understand that making money as an athlete is no assurance of having money. Evander Holyfield made nearly $250 million as a fighter, but last month he was moved to tell this newspaper: “I’m not broke. I’m just not liquid.” The baseball player Jack Clark once filed for bankruptcy while working under a contract that paid him $8.7 million, in part because he’d bought 18 cars.

I understand that athletes aren’t always the shrewdest investors. I understand that even successful people do silly things. What I can’t understand is how so much money just flies away. Where does it go?

Mr. Bradley, this article would have been a lot less corny if Rick Reilly had not already written something similar last week. You don’t really have any interest in Mike Vick’s money beyond trying to make him look even worse because of his financial woes.

Geez, enough with piling on Michael Vick.

Come on Mark, we all know you aren’t the brightest star at the AJC, but are you really this dumb?? Everybody with at least a little money knowledge knows that this is simply a move to protect whatever assets he can protect. It’s actually a very good move by his legal/investment team. And don’t worry Mark…..Mr. Vick probably has more money in his jail cell than you will make in your lifetime writing lousy articles like this one.

Vick didn’t file for bankruptcy, he filed for bankruptcy protection… I’m assuming you are mistaking Chapter 11 for the more common Chapter 7. Chapter 11 does not mean he doesn’t have any money, its more of a restructing of his debts. Must be why your a sports blogger I guess.

Also, who cares if he doesn’t have money. He doesn’t need it at this particular moment anyway does he? Do you not have better things to do. Unfortunately, I wish I did, maybe I need a different job. How about yours… or Moore’s?

In regards to K’s comment about Vick not asking us to repay or bail him out, that is not true. By declaring bankruptcy, Mike is defaulting on his debt and other consumers (me and you) will have to make up the difference. Too many people think that when they default that the debt just disappears and large corporations take a loss. In reality the debt gets passed on to other consumers in the form of higher product costs and increased insurance premiums.

I have to agree with the others and would like to see anything regarding the Vick family and friends to simply disappear from the headlines. Let’s hope that Mr. Blank and the Falcons are not dumb enough to consider bringing back the problem child when his jail time is finished.

I was surprised to read some of the comments! Most of you are freaks for not wanting to know the same thing…what did he do with all the money? If Vick is painted in a bad light ….too bad, so sad…he orchestrated his own demise. Still…considering the vast amount of money that was thrown his way - you can’t help but want to know what did he do with it all……

And further more, He signed for 37 million in guarantees … he didn’t get the full 37 million.

In any event, I’d assume he blew a lot of it quick with this dog case. a team of high priced lawyers aren’t cheap. AND, he defaulted on loans left and right, partially because he’s breached so many contracts by getting in trouble … breaching contracts means law suits. I’d be lead to believe the biggest suit that isn’t in the news is from … Nike.

Vick is trying to at least keep enough money to get a comfortable crib when he gets out. I’d want to live and eat to off my quick past while attempting to rebuild my future.

And furthermore, why do so many of you have your hands out for the Falcons? Last I checked, they are renovating the dome, signing UNPROVEN QB’s to bigger contracts, and the owner’s bottom suit is probably Purple Label. I doubt the falcons are hurting. Quit complain, let him do his bid, and let him rebuild his life. Many of you got your prayers answered anyway by wanting him off the team.

Everyone does realize that he didn’t get this money in a lump sum, correct? These contracts are usually paid out over the time of the contract. Since Chapter 11 is more about restructing his debt, he isn’t defaulting on anything. He’s just stating that his debts are more than his assets right now.

Why all the Bradley and Moore haters when they write a column. Vick filed Chap 11 and it IS newsworthy. Of course Mark and all of us figure he shipped his greenbacks offshore, probibly at the advice of his attorney. Just a sad story all the way around. One of the saddest stories of an Atlanta superstar athlete that squandered their fortune is that of Dominique Wilkins. His mom and sisters bled his wallet dry. At one time he had 20 plus car payments, many for cars he had no idea the whereabouts. Nique was just “taking care of family”. So its not always posse that sucks em dry. Many times its “family”. Why do you think Nique works for the Hawks? Two reasons. One-he has to make a living. Two-the Hawks are doing the right thing and taking care of a former hero on the floor.

Jim you are so right. His legal team made a very smart move. This man is not broke, don’t get it twisted. To all the people who constantly put this man down for what he did think about this, we all have done stupid things that we regret. But I guarantee that we have asked for forgiveness and gotten it. He did it & he’s suffering the consequences of his actions. Now we have to forgive the man and go on. It was a dog, and I understand some of you dog lovers but why can’t you get this passionate about a child who also can’t defend themseleves. I’m sorry but I care more about a human life than I do a freaking dog. Christ forgives us everyday for the things we do. He deserves a second chance & he deserves it here in Atlanta. This man sold out a dome. He made football exciting. Learn to be forgiving, stop being racist and lets get back to what we all love: Football!!!!!! Good luck Mike, I hope to see you in a Falcon uniform but if not, I’ll continue to be a fan.

His bankruptcy petition asks a court to tell his creditors and their shareholders and their families to go jump because this man can’t afford to pay his bills in full..thats “broke” anyway you cut it. Just because he is black, doesn’t mean he is hated in ATl. If he would stop giving the media fuel, the media would have nothing to write about. Just wait till the Virginia trial. I have honestly never seen a more pathetic sight than these Vick apologists. Good grief. It frightens me that people like this are among us.

And by the way, when someone files for bankruptcy it is in fact everyone’s business. Bankruptcy records are a matter of public record. He filed for bankruptcy and by doing so has made it everyone’s business. You can probably expect the media to be looking at those records and reporting on them in the near future, as is their right. Morever, it is morons like Mike Vick that are a drain on our entire economy. Spending more than you have effects everybody. And yes, despite all this guy’s purported riches that is exactly what he did. He spent more than he had. Otherwise he wouldn’t be filing for bankruptcy. You see folks, you don’t just live in some little bubble where you can do whatever you want. That’s not how this world works. With freedom comes responsibility. Hate to break it to you.

The comments by c. pole are a little disturbing. In his post, he is trying to justify that dogs are there to protect their masters as a reason to breed them to kill other dogs. I guess I missed that defense during the court proceedings and vacation bible school. Exactly when in the process were the dogs protecting Mike. Was it when he was betting on them or executing them because the animal lost in the ring? I think he got off easy when you consider the cruelty that was involved. Last time I checked the bible, I didn’t read a scripture anywhere suggesting that Jesus was in favor of participating in an event where the goal was to bet lots of money on which dog could kick the snot out of the other dog. Could you quote me the page and verse?

Get off the black/white thing. This is not about color (unless you are trying to come up with an excuse). Nobody ever looked at Ted Bundy or Charles Manson and tried to excuse their actions because they were white and didn’t know any better. However, I am suppose to simply excuse Mike’s actions simply because of his race, you can’t be serious???

If you do the crime, you do the time. If you waste your life, you should get the negative publicity since maybe future generations can learn from your mistakes and possibly not go down the same path of destruction.

GO pats he’s doing his time, we forgive and have a unforgiving heart individually not as a race.since you want to talk bible,GOD said you have to forgive in order to be forgivin.so if GOD spoke such a law and we don’t abide by it,then that person don’t only have a problem with race but also with GOD.

Vick is gone. It pains me to think of what could have been. But he made his bed now he has to sleep in it. Where did all his money go? Does it really even matter? There is no sense in beating a dead horse. He Bradley let it go it is yesterdays news.

you’re missing the point, bradley. vick has a lot of the money, but he also opened a lot of credit lines because he assumed he’s have constant income at least through the duration of his nfl contract. now that he doesn’t have any income and never will to the degree of 100 million dollars, he’s checking out with the government to avoid paying what he owes so that he can keep what he has.

it’s the oldest rule in the book of “thug,” along with drinking malt liquor, eating chicken and having illegitimate children.

Will someone answer this question for me…….Why is Arthur Blank STILL begging folks to buy tickets in July?? You would think that most of the Mike Vick haters would be lining up to buy tickets now that the team is full of “good character guys”. What’s the problem folks?????

I guess you knuckle draggers only blog, you don’t put your money where your mouth is…lol

He didn’t blow the money, he filed to keep money coming out while he wasn’t making money. He will be able to payback those debts after he serves his time and you better pray sorry Matt Ryan works out and gets ticket sales and if not get ready for Vick dome to comeback, it’s about wins and money to Blank

Bradley, get a clue! It’s bankruptcy protection … quite different than bankruptcy. He’s reorganizing the debt. But seriously, what is the point of this blog? Our entire society spends more than they make! Most people have thousands of dollars of credit card debt because they outspend their earnings. With Vick, probably same thing. Just a different level … and, oh, yes, he doesn’t have a job anymore!

If you know anything about finances, filing was a good decision to protect him from his creditors until he gets out of prison. If you make millions in loans from banks and have no income, they will sue to retrieve all monies in one installment.

Hey TC,

I did not quote the bible nor did I say that I had not forgiven or gotten past the fiasco.

The quote on Jesus and dogs was made by c. pole not me, I was simply seeking clarification on where he/she would get a suggestion that Jesus would think that dog fighting was appropriate. Maybe you should scroll up and read the prior comments to understand why I made my statement..

For the record there is no need for me to forgive since there was no personal effect on me for what occurred. Nothing Mike Vick did caused me any grief since they were his dogs and his bets. I found what he did appalling but I don’t believe I need to look into my heart to forgive him.

As for serving the time, that goes beyond prison. That includes the court of public opinion on not paying to watch him play, not buying products that he endorses and not being associated with anything or anyone that he is part of in the future.

That may not be fair but you are accountable for your actions by the general public. That goes for everybody from the Dixie Chicks to Michael Vick. Bill Belichick will always be labeled a cheater for the video taping scandal, people will think everyone in bicycling and track and field are doping to get better results and Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens will forever be linked to steroids

I harbor no ill will to Mr. Vick but there is no way I am going to stand and cheer for a dog murderer. Just because he says he is sorry and goes to the pen for a few years does not mean that I need to embrace him upon his release and give him any more of my hard earned dollars. By the same token, I don’t support the other celebrities that I listed above either.

Dayum! First no one could stand the way he Quaterbacked; then no one could stand the way he ran the ball; then no one could stand the way that we had victories, but not his statistics; then no one could breathe because he was a DOG Killer; then no one could stand the way that things kept coming up in the media (negative of course)regarding Michael & his family (Marcus); then no one could stand that he is still being considered a member of the Atlanta Falcons Organization, let alone the Quarterback; then no one could stand HIM at all, so we drafted a QB in the first round, 3rd overall in this year’s draft, so all of those people that were having hissy fits could finally exhale and move on; and now! We obviously are having a slow, lethargic, molasses, snails pace sports day, so we now have the Unmitigated Gall to wonder what Michael has done with all of HIS money! May I say it for him —— Please People, Kiss Off & Leave Me Alone!

“Where his money went is none of your business. He is not asking you or the public for a loan or a bail-out (like some big corporations). Find something else to talk about.”

I beg to differ. My tax dollars pay for the judge, court reporter, state attorneys that will hear this bankruptcy filing as well as his current upkeep in prison. SHould his bankruptcy go through, the price of consumer goods will be driven up by those companies he has defaulted on in an order for them to recoup their losses. It is absolutely my business where his money went, because he is now a ward of the government, which is ultimately supported by my tax dollars, as well as taking money out of my pocket long term with higher prices and loan rates because of a massive default like this.

As it’s been stated Chapter 11 is for Bankruptcy protection & usually not for individuals. Chapter 7 is losing it all & not repaying it. Chapter 13 is working out a payment plan & paying it over a period of years. Hopefully this is an orchestrated move by his lawyers to protect his money & he hasn’t squandered most of it. Where did it go? Just look at what’s been reported, based on that we know his money it went to: fund a dog fighting ring, his homies, family, pot, bad business deals, houses, cars, women, lawyers, paying off people. There’s probably more but a lot of went to all of thoes places.

As far as moving on the future, I can’t wait to see Matt Ryan throw interception after interception! He threw 19 in the weak ACC (don’t give me that bs about lack of talkent around him) so what makes people think he won’t do that in the NFL! Speaking of weak its been reported he has an average arm at best. The Falcons overacted in trying to rid themselves of the Vick stigma! Once again a mistake in judgment at QB by Mr. Blank! Hopefully my Cowboys will have a great season which will make watching the Falcons fans wallow in misery all the more enjoyable! LOL! Go Cowboys! We want #6!
