Hamas, Israeli right feed off each other
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The outcome of the Israeli election — with the right-wing, more confrontational parties emerging as apparent victors — confirms the dangerous dynamic at play in the Middle East.
“The rightward tilt is a blow to President Obama’s hopes that a new Israeli government might be willing to make peace with the Palestinians and various Arab neighbors. Netanyahu and Lieberman are pushing for the expansion of Jewish settlements in the West Bank, which Palestinians say is a main obstacle to peace, and are adamant that Israel should hang onto the Golan Heights seized from Syria in the 1967 war. Both Netanyahu and Lieberman also say that the army ought to return to Gaza and wipe out Hamas.”
All of those policies will strengthen the grip of extremists among the Palestinians. And as extremist groups such as Hamas become stronger and more aggressive, the appeal of more aggressive politicians such as Netanyahu and Lieberman becomes stronger among Israelis.
Which in turn further strengthens Hamas. The extremists on both sides are locked in a strange sort of alliance, strengthening each other at the expense of those still willing to risk negotiation.
It does not bode well for peace in the region, or for success in any initiative by Obama.

The pathetic foreign policies of the Bush/Cheny days should be summarily dumped. This would include the feckless relationship with Israel. Israel is not settling the West Bank. A more apt term would be “invading” or “conquering.” Russian Jews, or for that matter Jews from anywhere, do not have the right to build in anyone’s backyard that they want.

Possibly the Time headline could read “Israeli Elections Dash Hopes for Obama Administration Peace Vision”
Rather interesting, too, that discussions generally go along the lines of “what does this election or that alliance mean for what Israel will do?” - stating that Israel changes policy, changes back and tries something else.
Can the same be said for Hamas? Anyone care to cite how any change in the Israeli approach has effected any change in the Hamas position?

Paul,
In the previews from last week, it said that Ellen knows the truth. But, of course, that could mean anything and a plot to get people to watch the next week, as if anyone who watches BSG wouldn’t watch it the next week.
But I digress.
Okay, it said she knows the truth, but about what? From the first episode of this new run of episodes, Tigh found her in the rubble at the end of the show, when the nuclear bombs had gone off on Earth. Remember? And he was all worried and said he’d get her out, and she was all like, “hey dude, don’t bother - we’re gonna be reborn, remember?” And then Tigh was all like, “Oh yeah, duh, I forgot.”
Okay, so I think there is another Resurrection Ship possibly on Earth (or near - maybe on the dark side of the moon hmmmmm) - because I think she either knew the destruction on Earth was about to take place or had a hand in it like Six did on Caprica.
I don’t think them digging up that old Centurion head was a coincidence.

It certainly looks as if Israel has passed on Obama as saviour. The Iranian government, much like a monkey playing with a shiny bauble, is having a field day with Obama press releases and faux news. Let’s also throw in Pelotio as a name.
I most certainly do not, “… randomly throw out the first bullsht “I hate Obama” thought that pops out of your head each day.” Nonetheless, it is not hard to identify a growing track record of poor execution from a guy who had almost unlimited political capital. Methinks POTUS, who wasted no chance to criticize President Bush’s efforts in a difficult world, now realizes how tough the job is and that he was sputing nonesense on the cam, paign trail.
One more thing, on the bipartisanship thing-a-ma-jig, Obama campaigned on tax cuts for 95% for Americans. Why does he insist on a foolish pork laden stimulus package that represents more an end run around the approrpiations procedure than a well thought out plan when he could reach across the aisle to build consensus while lving up to the campaign tax cut promise? Don’t say his is an “infrastructure package” as less than 15% of total proceeds will go to actual infrastructure projects.

Galluping Past Bad Polls?
by Brent Bozell III
Some of President Obama’s policies are not faring well in public opinion, but will anyone be told? On Feb. 2, a Gallup poll found that Obama’s executive order “allowing U.S. funding for overseas family planning organizations that provide abortion” was decidedly unpopular: Only 35 percent approved, while 58 percent disapproved.
You didn’t know this? You’re not alone: A Nexis survey finds none of the television networks, cable or broadcast, noticed these results, either.
The Gallup survey found overwhelming approval for other Obama policies — on higher fuel efficiency standards, on restricting lobbyists from joining his administration, on interrogating suspects according to the Army Field Manual, and on naming special envoys for Afghanistan and Pakistan — so there is plenty of good news for the administration.
But why not report the negative news as well?
Barack Obama is the most extreme pro-abortion president in history. He supports the Freedom Of Choice Act (FOCA), which would provide unlimited, unrestricted taxpayer funding of abortion. Only 9 percent of the public agrees with him. It is so surprise, then, that Obama would not want the media talking about his executive order supporting subsidies for international abortionists.
And they didn’t. CBS and NBC noted it in a single sentence. ABC later offered a story, but incredibly chose to focus on the theme that religious-right forces were “brutal” in their opposition.

And I’ve got the 4th season on DVD. But those earlier seasons show there are some plot lines they could profitably return to.
More similarities with current day. The VP - those who would use your cherished system to gain advantage for themselves. Those who put their lives at risk and cause others to lose their lives because they think “If I play by the rules we’ll be okay.” Those, like Gaeta, who are not willing to see where their course may lead.
And for today’s topic: is peace between enemies, even those with one party who has sworn to eradicate the other, possible? What happens when the first steps towards peace are taken? The brave ones are killed. Fear reigns and tyranny attempts to assert itself in both camps. People who hold fast to ideals put their lives at risk - and in some case lose them - and that may not have an effect on the outcome.
Yeah, I can see why some don’t want to watch. Raises too many uncomfortable questions.

Now, that the right-wingys have won in Israel (even though the power broking is still going on) is it appropriate to say that just ONE party has vowed the eradication of the other? According to the piece Jay just linked, they have pretty much vowed the same thing with Hamas:
From the article:

Boortz pretty much sums up the idiocy that plagues the White House.
Yesterday we were supposed to get the grand financial plan from Obama’s tax-cheating whiz-kid Tim Geithner. And what we got was a bunch of grandstanding, but not a lot of details. Here’s one good line: “We’re will have to try things we’ve never tried before.” Wait! Isn’t that what brung us to this hideous dance with all these ugly partners in the first place?
Let’s see … we’ll start out by making millions of home loans to people who have no credit, no steady job history, and certainly not enough income to pay the loan back. We’ll make these loans to people who should be renters. We’ve never tried that before on such a large scale .. let’s see how that works out for us.
Here’s something else we haven’t tried before. Let’s pass a law - we’ll call it the Community Reinvestment Act. This will be a really nifty way for the government to interfere in the free marketplace. We’ll set up some urban gangs who can make sure local banks make bad loans to favored minority groups .. or they’ll get spanked by the federal government. Let’s see how THAT one works out for us.
Once we have those two programs we haven’t tried before in place, we’ll keep interest rates artificially and illogically low for far too long. Yeah, let’s follow this monetary policy that virtually every sane economist not working for the government thinks is a grave mistake because voters like low interest rates. That ought to work out really well.
So now our tax-cheat Treasury secretary wants to try some more things we haven’t tried before? Well, you may think that this message brings great hope, but it would seem that the stock market didn’t like that one bit.
If you want to see just how this gang of leftist statists want to change this country some new details can be found here.
The reason we don’t have more details has to be because they really don’t know how the hell they’re going to pull this off. It’s just going to be stuff we haven’t tried before. No chance for letting people work, thrive and then spend their own money.

Apparently feigning being a responsible governor takes precedent.
However Flip-flopping Mitt, Huckleberry, Newt the Nut, HeadRush, et al are sure to get excited watching Mannish Coulter slobber and drool about how the REAL conservatives are getting a bum rap for the evil liberal media!.
And for one helluva laugh, check out their website: http://www.cpac.org/
Ala Microsoft they are touting Conservatism 2.0! It would seem Conservatism 1.x was the equivalent of Windows ME.

That other part about ‘wiping out Hamas’ - that is troubling, doubtful if it’s attainable. Appears we’re in the ‘two steps backwards’ part of ‘three steps forward two steps backward’ thing. I will offer, though, that the Likud Party has spoken of wiping out Hamas - an organization. Hamas speaks of wiping out a people, an nation - men, women, children - everything.
And that spaniel? Ten years old - what is that, past social security age in dog years? See? There’s hope for ya’ yet!

Jay B,
Electing what you call confrontational extremists may well be the way to true peace in the region. A government willing to confront the true problem headon stands a better chance of solving the problem than one that pretends the other side wants to peacefully coexist if only enough concessions are made.

Paul,
I’ve got tears streaming down my face right now, that was hilarious. I laughed so hard I slobbered on myself.
See, I’m not so dumb.
The gripe I have about technology is that in many ways the technology is more inconvenient than what it’s trying to replace - the TV remote is a classic example - and yes, I’m not that bad, I do have one, but you lose the damn thing all the time, and it’s just as easy to get up and turn the damn channel instead of looking for the remote for an hour.
Oh, and the dog - the ladies will love him. Stump. What a great dog name.

Bosch (or anyone)
There was a lot of angst about VP Cheney and secrecy. The often cited meetings with representatives from the energy industry in advance of legislative proposals was cited. Lots of talk about Bush Administration not being open, etc.
Well, now we have the Democratic leadership of the House and Senate meeting at 3 to reconcile their bills and present themost expensive piece in the shortest time to ever come out of Congress.
My question is, why the secrecy? Why are they shutting out any recordings of their deliberations? Don’t the people have the right to know what the people we’ve elected to represent them are doing? What needs to be hidden? Plain language regarding influence groups? References to who expects a payback or payoff? Comments about rank politicization of issues?
Ah, well, Republican Administration or Democratic Administration - the odious elements continue.

Paul,
A secret meeting in the White House to draft legislation that is then sent to Congress for an open debate of said legislation pales in comparison to the audacity of secretly crafting and passing the legislation itself behind closed doors.

Anyone who believes in land for peace is a fool. How much land did Israel give up for peace the first time. Is there peace? They returned the Negev to Egypt and while Egypt has not attacked, it has done nothing to stop the tunnels to Gaza that start in Egypt and transport weapons.
Unfortunately, regardless of any attempts, there are extreamists that will not stop until Israel no longer exists. Land for Peace just does not work.

First off, prior to the return of Jesus, there never will be any (true) peace in the Middle East. If the “allusion” of such peace ever comes to fruition, we can rest assured the Antichrist himself is facilitating that facade.
Secondly, I’ve no allegiance or preference towards the Zionists nor Hamas/PLO, etc. My only concern (in the Israel “dilemma”) is U.S. taxpayer dollars going to fund/support either side. We’ve long needed to cease these foreign entanglements (which yield nothing of worth/value to us American citizens)!)!

I keep hearing that same ol’ song and dance about Clinton relaxing legislature that caused this mess. Well, for all these people who believe in a capitalistic society, why on earth wouldn’t they look to management? Poor leadership and poor management in public and private sectors have been getting a free ride the last 8-10 years and look where it got the country. I hope Obama changes that. As a company, you might be encouraged to loan to lower incomes, but geez, be reasonable. I have actually seen company reps improving the looks of applications to push them through. Pad a little here, push up a little here and the application passes. That is definitely not Clinton’s fault; it is company policy.

Another boatload of BS from Jay Bookman. To equate Hamas and Israel is idiotic. Hamas wants to exterminate all Jews and wipe Israel off the map. They target civilians on purpose and use there own people as human shield when they fire their rockets into Israel territory. How do you negotiate with monsters like that?

Cindy-I agree with you to a certain degree. While I believe Clinton had his hands in this mess, there was no oversight. There was way to many people, corps, and the public themselves that were aloud to run free. This was more than just a government failure-way more!!

Jay,
Try to keep you hatred for conservatives domestic, won’t you? I really don’t think that the people of Israel give a flying rats butt what you think sitting over here in your comfortable little cubicle with no rockets exploding around you.
On another matter, after watching the sickening interaction between Obama and his worshipers yesterday in Florida it is now clearer than ever how Hitler came to power. The country gets in trouble, a saviour comes along promising you everything you want, and BAM, you have a megalomaniac dictator. One little difference here. Obama is going to get these people addicted to government handouts but the money is going to run totally out about two years into his presidency. There won’t be enough “rich” people to tax to pay for what he is spending. Then his taxpayer money addicted supporters will get mean. And then the monster called inflation creeps in and it is going to steal his thunder and his support away. Happens everytime a democratic President has a democratic congress. Obama is proving to be exactly what the papers should have reported him to be before the election. A socialist.
