Eight arrested in Phelps bong case
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
That infamous picture of swimmer Michael Phelps and the bong was apparently taken in Columbia, SC. The Columbia police say they have no interest in prosecuting. The conservative governor of South Carolina says the case ought to be dropped.
But the local county sheriff, Leon Lott, may be going after Phelps. According to a local TV station:
“Lott says the picture indicated a law was being broken in his jurisdiction. He said he couldn’t ignore the violation just because Phelps is rich and famous.
We’ve now learned that since investigators began trying to build a case, they’ve made eight arrests: seven for drug possession and one for distribution. These are arrests that resulted as the sheriff’s department served search warrants.
We’ve also learned that the department has located and confiscated that bong.
Sources say the owner of the bong was trying to sell it on eBay for as much as $100,000.
The owner, who wasn’t even at the party, is one of the eight now charged.
Phelps is not one of those charged at this point, but the sheriff’s department has strong evidence that matches the photo to the house on Blossom Street.”
For goodness sakes, leave the guy alone. I’d say the punishment already meted out to Phelps more than fits the crime. The only saving grace would be that one of those arrested was the genius who took that picture and spread it around.
Really, aren’t there bigger problems in Richland County, SC?

[[Lott says the picture indicated a law was being broken in his jurisdiction. He said he couldn’t ignore the violation just because Phelps is rich and famous]]
Forget the ‘rich and famous’ part. Evidently Sheriff Lott takes the position police officers are afforded no discretion in his jurisdiction. Every violation results in an arrest or citation. Every speed limit violation. Every statute on the books, no matter how archaic? How many arrests has he had for selling lumber, paint or appliances on Sunday? How about arrests for violations of “When approaching a four way or blind intersection in a non-horse driven vehicle you must stop 100 ft from the intersection and discharge a firearm into the air to warn horse traffic.”
Attempts to come across as “hey, I’m only enforcing the law, all laws. all the time, no exceptions” comes across as pretty silly.
The District Attorney needs to take this guy to lunch for a little talk.

This is Sheriff Lott. He is a fruitcake with a gun, and an armored personnel carrier. Guy is a publicity hound, nothing more. It is pinheads like this that work to continue the “War on Drugs” that send hundreds of thousands of non-violent pot users to prison every year- where us taxpayers get to support them. The privatized prison industry loves guys like this.
Good luck on prosecuting Phelps. How are you going to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that there was indeed pot in that bong? Get 8 potheads to say it was so they do not end up in prison themselves? Good luck with that. Phelps will have great lawyers, and people are getting fed up with silly prosecutions like this. Of course, since I once lived in Richmond Country, I will say that there are some seriously backwards people there. Still, this doesn’t pass the laugh test.

yeah Jay, there ARE bigger problems, like this report from Associated Press:
NEW YORK – The stock market is plunging, with the Dow Jones industrials skidding 400 points as investors show their frustration with a lack of details about the government’s latest bank bailout plan.
Financial stocks are leading the market lower, reflecting Wall Street’s growing concerns about the government’s ability to restore the health of the banking industry. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner announced the broad outlines of the plan. But investors, who want to know among other things how banks’ soured mortgage assets will be valued, are showing their disapproval at the lack of details by selling.
The Dow is down 400 at 7,870. All the major indexes are down more than 4 percent.
Great plan Duhblama, great plan. We all see how the people it should affect the most think of it.
Our nation’s annual budget contains about 20% in expeditures that all fall under the umbrella of ‘entitlements’, to include Social Security, Medicare, welfare, etc., etc.
It is being reported that the best estimate so far has our Congress putting entitlements in the 39-40% of this massive fraud and waste. This must be the ‘change you can believe in’, a change from what we have now, to nationwide abject poverty and dependence on the government, which is what this socialist absolutely wants.
Democrats knew that this was coming, and GW Bush tried repeatedly to warn us, but they didn’t want to hear it, because it fit exactly into their ideological framework.
The left wingnuts want to blame Bush for everything, to have a scapegoat for their own miserable failures. The morons that supported Obama will have the most to lose, and THAT makes me satisfied, because when you can call out someone as an idiot, prove it, listen to them bellow protestations and divert from subjects just to throw their own stones, well, it sort of is just, as I said, satisfying.
Suck on it losers. Your Chosen One is leading us all on an adventure from which we may never recover in our lifetimes, and it is ALL YOUR FAULT, LOSERS.
Be a MAN, or a WOMAN, and own up to your own mistakes, your own ignorance, and better start to save, save, save. Admitting your were in error is the first step to recovery.

Ummmm. I was referring to the words straight from the mouth of the Republican that was quoted — not the messenger — Paul. Try to remember the proper order of things. First, thou shalt not shoot the messenger lest ye risk losing messages. Now, what was that bit of sniping that you were trying to fling there. Then again, Republicans do so like to make up their own versions of truth so what good is a messenger carrying the truth, eh.
Commie,
The law’s the law. Now, what do you recommend we do with all those wealthy people and corporations that are not paying their taxes and they know full well what they’re doing — deliberately evading their obligation to pay their taxes. Now, are you in favor of everyone paying their taxes or not.

I didn’t think I was shooting the messenger (you) but questioning the objectivity of the author (Begala).
I went back over part of that article. It begins with an attempt to link a discussion between BOR and Karl Rove from last year in which BOR asserted outlets such as the NY Times paint or hype economic illustrations in the bleakest terms, linked to Bush, to manage expectations regarding Pres Obama.
Not really germane to my contention that it’s difficult to find Republican Congressmen/Senators who want ALL tax cuts and NO spending.
Then was a comment by a Rep senator asking for a slowdown to get it right. Delay? Yes, but if the intent to say “delay” is to mean ‘obstruct’ then it’s misleading. As far as Sen Shelby - he’s part of a rather conservative group of Republicans, but still doesn’t address my original question of who’s in favor of all tax cuts and no spending?
The “rising star” cited for ‘do nothing’? I didn’t think governors were writing this, but… a logical followup question for Begala is, does he mean that every company, every bank, every mortgage company should be ‘saved’? ‘Cause that’s not the language in TARP.
Which, I think, illustrates what happens when one asks a partisan advisor for analysis of the motives of the opposition.

Paul,
I think people routinely make mistakes on their taxes. Further, some people will try to push the envelope in their interpretation of tax code. I would say that there is no statistically significant link, per se, between these cases and patriotism. On the other hand, these corporations and wealthy individuals that would deliberately seek out ways to evade their obligation to abide by the laws of the land and pay their damn taxes…well…shooting is too good for the treasonous scum.

I should’ve put a smiley face at the end of my last post. It’s the kind of link so many people seem to make and take quite seriously. But I did find VP Biden’s use of the word ‘patriotism’ debatable -
I think, when it comes considering deductions, if the question arises “can I get away with this?” or “if I look at it this way (like writing off a summer camp as child care)” that the real intent comes through.
As far as corporations and wealthy individuals: I think we need a tax overhaul on how corporations are allowed to handle offshore ‘subsidiaries.”
And as far as the ‘wealthy individuals’ - I’ve pointed out several times that the darling enemy of the Right, George Soros, has a huge amount of his wealth parked in the Caribbean - with the effect of avoiding US taxes. Same with the Kennedy family and their trusts (not offshore but avoiding taxes).
Kinda like AmVet says, do we really think anyone’s going to take on these groups?
By taxpayer

Paul,
Contrary to what you might think, I think they’re treasonous scum regardless of party affiliation, stature, etc., for the scenario that I cited. We should confiscate their holdings and send them to prison to meet their new roommates — their big new roommates. As far as taking on someone that is powerful or whatever, it happens every time there is a revolution. If you get enough people angry enough at you, then all bets are off. Who would have ever thought that they would see airplanes flown straight into buildings. I’ll bet you or anyone else that Bush and Cheney and others dumped a load in their BVDs when it finally hit them that they could have been on the receiving end of a 747. I’ve seen fear in people and it makes some people do really unexpected things. The same goes for other emotions.
