American people choosing sides…

… and they’re not choosing congressional Republicans.

In a related finding, a Gallup poll from last week says that 55 percent of Americans report increased confidence in Obama’s handling of the economy since he took office; 17 percent report having less confidence.

Jay

It’ll be interesting if the public does a split on support for Democrat President Obama and Democratic Congress.

I looked at Gallup and Rasmussen this morning - I thought the following pertinent to this discussion (Gallup)

Slimmed-Down Alternative Garners Less Support

A bipartisan group of centrist senators is attempting to increase support for the legislation by shaving some of the more controversial spending items from the current set of proposals. Estimates of how much trimming will take place vary, but Gallup finds 48% in favor of a smaller stimulus package that would cut the size of the original bill by up to $200 billion.

48 percent favor, 41 percent oppose, 11 percent no opinion

When combining respondents’ views on the two questions, Gallup finds 72% of Americans in favor of at least one of the plans, including 27% who favor both plans, 24% who favor only the larger proposal, and 21% who favor only the smaller proposal. Thus, public support for some type of stimulus — regardless of the specific dollar amount — is high.

Analysis by party affiliation and harmonizing the different data sets is here

Once again, communist, some real coursework would have helped you out. There’s something called a statistical analysis that is used in all social sciences. They take the numbers they have based on a given sample and run them through a computer program like SPSS to figure out how representative they are of the entire population. It’s really not that complicated and it works. That’s why the polls leading up to the election in November were so accurate- statistical analysis. Back to school Mr. MBA. lol!

I suggested stat as a fundamental understanding of terms and concepts is essential. Glad to hear you’ve taken the course. And you’re correct, polling is not the same, but it is dependent upon stats.

The questions you raise have to do with the subpopulations, their expected divergence from the general population, their distribution and inclusion in the sample size.

Generally speaking, professional organizations like Gallup and Rasmussen do a pretty good job. Even they treat results such as the ones Jay cited as different (and more accurate than) say, ‘exit’ polling.

Another key factor is that these polls describe the public - and as we’ve seen, support or opposition on any given subject can vary pretty wildly over time. That’s why the time frame is so important and Jay regularly cites comparative data from one period to another.

So I think it’s safe to say, most Americans want some kind of a stimulus package regardless of cost, support varies by party affiliation as President Obama is viewed more favorably on this matter than either Congressional Democrats or Republicans.

You did raise a good point about wording of questions. Was listening this weekend to a guy who’s in the business - has written a book called “words matter” or some such, and he made the point:

If you say “stimulus” you have support.

A serious question not involving p**sing contest of what institution collects alumni donations from you.

Since it is obvious that the senate now has at least 3 senators willing to vote yes for this stimulus, why is there still bickering?

This cannot be about partisanship, or Obama would not have bashed republicans, regardless of if they needed to be chastised or not. There is obviously enough votes there, so why does the democratic party not do what is in their best interest, and pass the bill without the help of the republicans?

This would seal their place in elections for years to come if they were the group who designed and ultimately passed this act. With the success that has been guaranteed as a matter of this bill, democrats would cement their elected office for 20-3- years.

So then why would they not just pass the Bill and show their power? Or is it they do not want to get blamed if this stimulus does not work?

Which brings up another question entirely.

If the democrats are not 100% SURE THIS IS GOING TO WORK, then why SHOULD we spend over 800 BILLION.

We are all nothing but pawns in ALL (rep. Dem.) in these politicians GAME of politics.
Anyone who tries to still play partisan games after all of the information available today is either delusional or so undereducated it would take an entire other bailout, stimulus package to obtain sufficient educational resources to bring about rational thought.

Link: CBO: Obama stimulus harmful over long haul

“President Obama’s economic recovery package will actually hurt the economy more in the long run than if he were to do nothing, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said Wednesday.

CBO, the official scorekeepers for legislation, said the House and Senate bills will help in the short term but result in so much government debt that within a few years they would crowd out private investment, actually leading to a lower Gross Domestic Product over the next 10 years than if the government had done nothing. “

He just wants enough to go to the leaches that are supported by govt. programs, so that he and his cronies can get relected in 4 yrs.

Solve it by linking the right to vote to properly paying taxes, That would change things considerably. Oops then half Obama’s cabinet picks would not be able to vote….. Guess thats out then LoL.

“Tax cuts for the wealthy”

So Republicans propose cutting the lowest two marginal rates so the lowest would be down to what, ten percent?

So now Democrats think people at the very lowest rung of those who pay income tax are wealthy?

Yet Pres Obama want to exempt households earning between about a hundred grand and a quarter million from paying social security tax?

Will recession dull hip-hop’s bling?

By John D. Sutter

(CNN) — Gold teeth, luxury cars and diamond chains heavy enough to slump a bodybuilder’s shoulders have been ubiquitous symbols in hip-hop music for years, if not decades. Rapper Lil Wayne performs Sunday night at the Grammys wearing a modest necklace.

But — as you may have noticed at the Grammys on Sunday — there are signs that the genre’s high-dollar bling may not survive the economic recession.

Many rappers came to the annual music awards show wearing sleek suits; their famous jewels were conspicuously absent. Artist Lil Wayne, who accepted two of rap’s biggest awards — Grammys for best solo rap performance and best rap album — performed wearing a T-shirt. Only a modest necklace dangled from his neck.

Like everyone these days, rappers are feeling the effects of the country’s economic meltdown. But industry commentators are split on whether they think financial woes will cause rappers to give up their hefty jewels.

Some experts contacted by CNN said the bling era soon will come crashing down.

HOW TO RETURN AMERICA TO PROSPERITY

1) End tax breaks for American corporations that operate (use foreign labor) overseas.

Current law (passed in 2004) allows corporations to claim deductions for expenses related to foreign operations, but allows them to defer income (not report) related to foreign operations until such time as they bring the income into the United States. Many times the deductions exceed their income so that we, as Americans, actually subsidize corporations to move jobs overseas.

2) Repeal NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement)

3) Get out of the WTO (World Trade Organization)

4) Repeal Most Favored Nation status for China

5) Enact a tax on goods made overseas for U.S. corporations

6) Enact a tax (tariff) on goods from countries with whom we have a balance of trade deficit, i.e., we import more from that we export to.

The above will go a long way towards “leveling the playing field” in our trade relations with the rest of the world—especially India and China.

This is the medicine we need. Band-aid stimuli packages are a big waste of time.

“BOOKMAN, IF government could solve the economic problem then why is Cuba and other communist countries such crap?”

(This is why “conservative thought” is an oxymoron when attempted by wingnuts.)

As a capitalist country, we have relied on private industry and business to to regulate themselves far more than do communist and socialist countries. Now, we’re paying a very large price for that choice. The price is having to turn to our government to solve our economic problem (and begging the commies for more handouts) because the “invisible hand of the marketplace” didn’t live up to Reagan’s naive trust.

Communist China may be a crap country, but we owe it $682 billion — more than any other. Foreign countries that hold $billions in American treasury securities include Chavez’s Venezuela, Iran, Russia, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Libya. The grand total is $3.8 trillion.

“…say that they ♥ the troops but then they turn right around and stab them in the back.”

Duhng, you mindless fool, that would be your beloved bloodlusting bungler and Ultra Conservative George W. Bush who presided daily over the botched invasion and occupation of Iraq that allowed over 900 American soldiers to die and more injured for the lack of body armor or vehicle armor. With billions of dollars going to Halliburton and BlackWater and with money available for such soldier protection, why did YOU chickenhawks support and enable such a serious and widely reported dereliction of duty, Duhng?

And why did you chickenhawks shuck and grin while Bush and Scumsfeld defined injuries by U.S. soldiers in Iraq so as to exclude two thirds of them? Their definition of official injuries is ones incurred in the midst of battle, even though most of that country became a theater of war, with much unilateral, unopposed action by the armed forces. CBS’ Sixty Minutes on October 2004 demonstrated the feelings of seriously injured U.S. soldiers, who were not officially counted, in order not to arouse further the opposition to the war by the American people. One quadriplegic solider used the words “a disgrace.” What is your response, Duhng?

And why didn’t you speak out against BushCo’s policy to prohibit at all times the families of their fallen sons and daughters from going to Dover, Delaware to pay their respects to their loved ones? Mothers and fathers were deeply hurt by you chickenhawks desire to avoid any public focus or associations with this destination exclusively for political reasons. You have not explained this inhumane exclusion. Why not, Duhng?

So, you can take that lame-a* support the troops cr@p and shove it up your assh0le, Duhng. Cuz I seriously doubt 90% of those here honestly believe you give a flying f&ck about the GIs or their families…

I’m tired of the government, i.e., the Republican machine, giving tax breaks to the wealthy. If that wealth was indeed reinvested in the American economy, we would have no choice but to adhere to that concept. But it doesn’t. George Herbert Bush called Reagan’s trickle down economics as voodoo economics.

On the other hand, I’m sick of the perpetually lazy and the rampantly irresponsible from receiving tax advantages from the government. This does not include the unemployed or the disabled, but only those who can work and don’t.

Those people are as vile to me as the Young Republicans who lambasted the anti-Iraq crowd politically, but lacked the courage of their convictions to fight an ill-conceived war.

In the end, it will be the middle class, AGAIN, that shoulders this burden; kissing his employer’s behind for even giving him a job, and giving the drunk on the corner a buck because we all need to feel sorry for the unfortunate.

It sucks to be middle class in America. No political representation, and always one step away from utter ruin.

If anybody here really thinks that this mess started with Bush, then you are fools. This stuff started with NAFTA (Bush-1). This took away our manufacturing and heavy industry capability and this was supported by Both Bush-1 and Clinton. The noose tightened through the 90’s with the Techno Bubble which was an economic myth and which Clinton was fortunate enough (politically), to have been in office during the period. Yes Clinton had a balanced budget, but it was a farce. The techno-bubble burst and the economy tanked. Clinton was the one that that allowed Fannie and Freddie to spend money with no constraints at all from our government and Clinton was the one that brought the federal government heavily into providing houses to people, no matter if the they could afford them or not. Clinton was also a big friend to big business and it’s CEO’s. Then Bush came and he inherited a recession from Clinton. He took over for 8 years and him and the republicans, for the first 6 years, with the consent of the democrats, spent and spent and spent. The last two years of his presidency the Democrats controlled congress and they made matters even worse. Anybody that got in the way of Fannie and Freddie was torn apart by the Democrats. So this mess is not just the republican partys fault. The democrats had a huge hand in this over many years. Manhy of the same thugs in Congress that were there for all those years of destruction are still there and they need to be gone. The presidents come and go, and really have very little power, but the thugs in Congress, as long as dumb-A$$ people in this country keep electing them, will continue to destroy our great nation. So for all the back biting and hatred that is spewed, remember this; right now the party and its leaders which had a huge hand in all of this is totally in power. The difference now is that they have a president who totally agrees with anything that comes out of Pelosi’s and Read’s mouth. Both Republicans and Democrats should thank God (or whatever you believe in) that there is more than one party to challenge the status quo.. One party rule will never work unless people decide they want to live under Stalin, Hitler or Chavez. Then it won’t much matter anyway, will it?

Hey, we have a Democratic president that I don’t hate, and actually resonate with on a few key things — so I was hoping to come here for some substance but instead I get poll-driven politics. Hmph.

Here’s a WSJ piece that articulates, for me, how badly Obama has fumbled the bipartisan opportunity that this “stimulus” bill was:

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123396623933859023.html

And here’s my reaction, as a city-loving (and city-living — yay East Atlanta) pro-life conservative:

I was actually fairly OK with (or at least resigned to) a version of the bill described here, provided that the public works portion of the legislation addressed some of the major infrastructure funding imbalances and neglected areas over the last 50 years — that is, funding for road/bridge repair, general infrastructure maintenance and repair and funding for transit capital and operations, rather than new lane-miles of pavement (the former continues to grease the wheels of commerce while helping the “least of these” who rely on transit to get to what jobs they still hold, while the latter adds burden to the economy and to the environment, as well as more costs down the road).

Instead, we’ve got a giant clusterfarg of a bill that’s literally the worst of both worlds. The “public works” is more of the same (more roads, wider roads, let’s-pave-what’s-left) while everything else is a payoff for political allies.

I rationalized my way into being OK with Obama being president (and certainly was no Bush fan, especially by the end of his term) because to a large extent, I felt he “got” cities, urban issues and the problems with postwar growth and resource allocation in a way that no one on the other side of the aisle really does. (And would I rather have all that in more of a free-market, neo-Liberatarian and of course pro-life package? Of course. But ain’t nobody sellin’ that.)

But this is no way to start. Way to squander all that goodwill, Mr. President. Phbbbbbt.

I am really just laughing my a** off. This idiot “president” is a product of his affirmative action education and was obviously socially promoted at every level. Watching him trying to explain his economic “stimulus” package is like listening to 4 year old tell you why the sky is blue..

“only govenment ..can fix the economy” . Hey Barry, anybody with an 8th grade grasp of economics knows you can’t spend your way out of an economic down cycle.. ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU’RE BOROWING THE MONEY, DIP*T!

The bright side is that this moron’s term is already such a disaster that when the carnage ends.. there will NEVER be another. Oh.. and that we still get a great chuckle everytime Chicken Little Barry gets on his bully pulpit and tells us it’s the end of the world unless we borrow more money… LMOA

You have to just love statistics. Nice chart, Jay.

This bill belongs to Harry, Nancy, their crowd, 3 liberal “Republicans” from the Northeast, and all the educated and informed supporters of our present Administration.

It is all yours.

As for me, I have to get back to work so I can support my family and several others of unknown identity.

Jay, after last night news conference the honeymoon is over. I would suspsect the majority of people don’t even know what is included in the bill. All they hear is Obama’s constant, blah, blah, blah. From 3 millillion jobs, to 4 million jobs, etc. Do you have the guts to start tracking the promises, doubt it!!!
