House Minority Whip Eric Cantor rouses his troops for battle against the evil Queen Nancy.

House Republicans are treating their unanimous vote against the stimulus bill as a major victory, which given their reduced numbers in the House might be understandable. After all, it’s the only kind of victory they’re likely to see for a while.

“Look at these faces,” California Rep. Kevin O. McCarthy told a reporter from Politico, pointing to a roomful of Republicans and their families at a House GOP retreat over the weekend. “They’re all smiling. You’d think these people are still in the majority.”

According to Politico, U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions of Texas, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, told his colleagues that they need to get over the idea that they’re participating in legislation and ought to start thinking of themselves as “an insurgency” instead.

There’s a certain romantic appeal to that insurgency approach. The Republicans are casting themselves as the brave 300 Spartans at Thermopylae, fighting heroically against the invading hordes. Being seen as combative insurgents also helps them with their base back home; most of the surviving Republicans represent solidly conservative House districts where they’re more worried by a primary challenge from the right than by a Democrat in the general.

In fact, according to a recent Rasmussen poll, 43 percent of Republicans trace their party’s problems to an excess of moderation; only 17 percent say their party has become too conservative. So for most GOP House members, moderation has no benefit.

However, if that’s the approach they’re going to take, House Republicans ought to drop the hypocrisy of pretending that they really truly wanted a bipartisan stimulus plan and could have been wooed if only that evil Nancy Pelosi had been a little nicer to them. The truth is, they have no interest in compromise or bipartisanship. Compromise is a danger to the strategy they’ve adopted.

A group that defines and excites itself by saying no cannot risk saying yes. Every effort by their opponents to reach out for support is a threat to their purity and unity, an effort to lure one or more of their number into betraying their holy cause. To say yes is to lose.

Again, if that’s their approach, fine. But don’t pretend otherwise, because it undercuts the image. Did the brave Spartans whine and complain that to the press that the Persian King Xerxes wouldn’t negotiate with them fairly?

Nosireebob, they did not.

What planet are you calling in from?

Are you honestly trying to suggest that the Republicans offered no compromise whatsoever?

Are you honestly trying to suggest that this trillion dollar pork spending spree is NOT just a grab bag of US treasury dollars for liberals special interest groups?

Are you seriously suggesting that Republicans would not be derelict in their duties if they did vote yes for this?

{{{{“Look at these faces,” California Rep. Kevin O. McCarthy told a reporter from Politico, pointing to a roomful of Republicans and their families at a House GOP retreat over the weekend. “They’re all smiling. You’d think these people are still in the majority.”}}}}

It’s not all about the power, I know this is hard for the common pinko to understand, this is all about Republicans getting a clue.

They got it.

And for that, they will get it.

Well said, Jay.

Reagan’s ‘thou shalt not talk evil of another republican’ has morphed into little more than an anti-American disease of the mind.

Why? I think, following civil rights, the right pretty much figured this place had gone to hell in a hand basket and the best move was to suck as much out of her as they could before she went under (you know, has to happen with all of ‘those people’ drinking out the same fountain and all). Which is what the last eight years was. The ‘smart’ ones are the ones who bilked us for an obscene amount of coin and now live on an island someplace. What stayed behind are the laughables we see today basing their existence on their ability to puff out their chests out to someone named Nancy.

Oh, those tough Republicans…at least with this, they’re not playing vicarious soldier with somebody else’s kid.

A lot to chew on here, Jay, and as I’m about to head out for Margaritas and good Mexican food with family I’ll have plenty of time. Thanks again for the source cite - my first thought regarding the “excess of moderation” was, I’ll bet they thought for eight years the House and Senate had become more like the Democratic Party, with all the deficit spending, expansion of programs and failure to cut anything.

Then I read the cited poll.

[[55% think it should become more like Alaska Governor Sarah Palin in the future, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Just 24% think failed presidential candidate John McCain is the best future model for the party, and 10% are undecided.]]

Uh oh.

Well, evidently 45 percent don’t think the Party should become more like Palin. And the McCain numbers? Maybe - and this is weak - maybe 24 percent think someone who lost isn’t the best model. But there he was on CNN this afternoon, stating how Senate Reps were going forward with bipartisanship (is this where someone says “bless his compromising heart”?).

I don’t think I’d go as far as you regarding the ‘no interest in bipartisanship’ thing - maybe more along the lines of being willing to say ‘no’ when something is too much (amount of nonstimulus pork in the House bill) but still willing to go along with a massive, deficit-busting bill in dire times (as the Senate Reps have indicated). In fact, I’ll be willing to bet if the pork is considerably reduced, even if much isn’t done with the House’s tax reduction numbers, that you’ll see a number of House Republicans vote for final passage.

I’ll have a Margarita for ya -

Hi Mrs Godzilla!

Is this an existent CBO report or another nonexistent CBO report?

And I’m kinda confused - when CBO was not flattering of the Dem House bill they were a bunch of goombahs but now they are Wise and True?

See, the first report said 36 percent of the House bill was spent after 18 months. The second report says 22 percent of the Senate bill was spent after 18 months.

So the Senate bill sounds more like what House Republicans wanted - more stimulus spending up front. As I said earlier, House Republicans and Democratic Senators had more in common than House Dems and Senate Dems - which is why Dem Senators said the House bill was going to get severely modified.

But back to that 22 percent - you’re still okay that nearly $200 billion (that’s ‘billion with a ‘b’) that is not spent in 18 months, so can’t really be called ‘stimulus’ since that which it is designed to stimulate will have already receded into the past - that that amount of money in this special appropriation, in these severe budget times, is okay?

I knew the Rethuglicons were interested in bipartisanship only if it was THEIR bipartisanship. Rethuglicons don’t know what the word means. Instead of working WITH the Democrats, all they can do is throw spears. I listened to one of these butt-sniffers on Sunday and all he could do was whine that President Obama should be embarrassed. No constructive proposals other than the Rethuglicon mantra of more tax cuts. Yea, lets borrow more money AND give more tax cuts to the uberrich. That worked real well for the last eight years so let’s do it some more. Hey, give me a $20,000 tax cut and I’ll buy a car or $100,000 and I’ll buy another house. Anything less and it’s simply not enough to have any effect on the economy.

The Rethuglicons are simply using this as a wedge issue for the next election cycle. They focused on small parts of the overall package and whine it’s “pork spending.” That may be true, but what they don’t say the real problem is it’s not Rethuglicon pork spending. President Obama made a real mistake when he talked about bipartisanship and changing the tone. That just set up Democrats to be the fall guy for the Rethuglicons obstruction and impediment. I expected nothing less for a bunch of liars and con men.

When you vote Rethuglicon, you vote against your own best interests. And their opposition to the stimulus bill is living proof.

Those few Dems who opposed the war were right and every one else was wrong. We should have concentrated on Afghanistan.

When a few Dems went against the war in Iraq I agree with the Dems. In this case I agree with the Rep.

This is what we need is debate. What we need at the AJC and other papers are fewer cheerleaders for the Dems and Rep; and more people looking at things as what is good for the country. Bookman is a cheerleader.

This bill will do nothing but raise the debt. Tax cuts won’t stimulate the economy and the spending is to far off to stimulate the economy.

Nobody should have to go with the stimulus. States whose delegations vote for it should get it and states whose delegations vote against it should refuse it. That would be fair and would reduce the total package to only those that believe in it.

My assessment of Palin the snowbilly reflects enough of this country and the majority of Alaska and her career further as a politician will never see the light of day. Most of Alaska wants her gone and she will be in 2010.

And if she isn’t running, and we hope she will be in 2012, I guess Sarahpack is for charity while the South Yukon is literally starving while moronbilly ignores them.

She also stiffed the Republican party by lying about why she wasn’t going to their retreat. McCain did that and David Letterman put him in the ground. And if McCain who was silent in the meetings wants to take credit for TARP so be it. TARP was a Rethug production and it flew into the ground. It raped a lot of people who could least afford it.

We failed to lead,” said the former Lt. Maryland Governor. “The principles we espoused [in 1994] are still true and good today and that’s not what people moved away from us for. They moved away from us because we behaved badly. We came to Washington and we became like the people we were sent here to replace. And they replaced us.”

I wonder if it has come to the Thug Wingnuts’ attention here that Palin’s position on more and more bailouts is directly contrary to the Republican Congressional leadership and most Thugs.

Palin’s stupid $2 billion dollar Road to Nowhere is also bringing her down.

I’m thinkin’ Palin and Joe the Moron Plumber for VP—let’s have a straight moron ticket if the rank and file Rethugs want the mother of the high school dropout who is a teenage mother herself with a mother-in-law p;rison bound as their candidates.

Eye on Pallin.org is a national campaign dedicated to exposing Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s anti-conservation agenda.

Dusty you’re a vile woman draped in the flag of our country. Obama didn’t preside over the original bail out money, your hero did, but now all of a sudden, bail outs are evil and synonomous with with Obama. The economist that predicted this mess back in 2006 is in favor of Obama’s plans with a few slight tweaks, I guess you’re smarter than he is too. I think his name is Nouribini, or something close to it. Obama’s been on the job roughly ten working days, and you act like he’s attacked a country without provocation or something.

It was a mistake, huh.

Now, if it had been Blackwater or US soldiers doing the shooting………

Is it not perfectly clear that America is the enemy?

Look at the Cuckovich cartoon and then read this-

{{{{A few quick facts about Wall Street bonuses. The pretext for the political outrage was the New York comptroller’s report this week on the aggregate data for bonuses in 2008. That “irresponsible” bonus pool of $18 billion was for every worker in the New York financial industry, from top dogs to secretaries. This bonus pool fell 44% in 2008, the largest percentage decline in 30 years. The average bonus was $112,000; bonuses typically make up most of an employee’s salary on Wall Street. The comptroller estimates that this decline will cost New York State $1 billion in lost tax revenue and New York City $275 million. Both city and state may have to announce layoffs.-Wall Street Journal}}}}

This reminds me of my son, when he was in his teens and early twenties. Instead of being who he was, he defined himself as who he WASN’T. He WASN”T his mom, he WASN”T his sisters. What a waste! It is like the toddler who likes saying NO to show he has power.

Unfortunately, the US needs LEADERSHIP. Thoughtful leadership, not recalcitrant 2 year olds. Both parties need to keep that in mind. Stop pouting and sticking out your lip, stop telling us who you are NOT, and tell us who you ARE.

“I know this is hard for the common pinko to understand, this is all about Republicans getting a clue.”

So for 8 years you morons wandered around in the dark and all it took was 2 weeks of the Obama presidency to set it all straight?

For 8 years President Bush never met a spending bill he didn’t like, busted the budget and borrowed from China like mad to run up the deficit to record numbers, and now our issues are because of free spending liburals…

You wingnut idiots can’t be, just can’t be serious.

2 weeks of Obama and we’re right back in 1998. And he hasn’t even done anything yet. You’re all mindless, clueless morons.

And Andy’s a big welcher…

It is more of the same. Do as I say, not as I do, right Dems? Obama already doing what he says he won’t do. Cabinet members who think they are better than taxpaying Americans. The Emperor is getting naked and he will soon have no clothes.

Did anyone else see all the new jobs that big business is creating. It’s true. As a result of their massive layoffs, there is now a shortage of government employees to handle the unemployment applications. Trickle-down economics. You just gotta love it.

I also heard that Obama has taken the Republican whiners to heart with their incessant pleas for government to cut spending. He has told them that he’s speeding up the return of troops from Iraq. Now that’s what I call listening to the Republican’s whines and reaching out to them.

Then, there’s the whining from the Republicans about illegal immigrants so once again Obama is reaching out to help. He’s pushing for 11,000 border patrol agents. But, wait a minute. That would require government spending on work — busy work. Those are not jobs. Maybe he should just skip that one.

Then, there’s the 18 billion in taxpayer dollars (this ain’t Monopoly Money, folks). Now, the Republicans want to give folks even more tax cuts so that would mean that those folks getting “bonuses” in addition to their regular salary and perks from the taxpayer out of this 18 billion would also pay even less in taxes. Of course, Obama likely does not quite understand the “logic” that the Republicans are using to justify such a move and rightfully so. It’s probably because it has something to do with that trickle down trash that was proven wrong long before Reagan resurrected again. By the way, Nancy had another vision. She saw a bunch of Republican idiots misusing her “just say no” line. That wasn’t a vision, Nancy. That was the Republican congressmen standing in unity on TV. They’re such tools.

Jay, great article in the NY Times about the strong voter turnout and success of the Iraqi elections. Looks as if the reevaluation and redemption of the Bush Presidency has started earlier than expected. Does the AJC plan to report on this? Perhaps you might want to write about this gramnd success also. Below is the link.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/03/opinion/03bolton.html

We have seen POTUS’ approval ratings drop for 80%+ to barely more than 50% in less than three weeks. We have seen scalawag nominess who have no trouble supporting large tax increases because they do not pay their individual tax obligations. We have seen the Chicago PD report on the large number of mugshots of individuals in Obama tshirts after eight years without one mugshot in a Bush/Cheney shirt. We now realize that Obama was elected by Acorn’s ability to mobilize the ignorant, uninformed, and unemployed masses to vote for Obama.

Jewcowboy (Kinky Friedman? that you?) asserted upthread:

“and makes you look like a racist. I’ve no idea if you are or not, just telling you what it appears.”

Oh, Andy’s no racist. He just glibly associates the first African-American President with an American state-sponsored terrorist organization devoted to eradicating any fought-for rights for African-Americans. And then, when called out, claims he only did it because Rev. Lowery somehow started it.

But he’s no racist. Nosirree.

Speaking of people who are Not Racist, it’s been two weeks since the Obamas moved into the White House. Seems like a good time to check on Bud Wiser’s fearless prediction, posted a few weeks ago, to wit:

“Two weeks in the White House and the whole neighborhood will look like Cascade Road.”

I’m gonna put that one in the bin with Andy’s “You’re going to hate ‘08.”

Obama’s Wrong: Wall Street Not to Blame

Monday, February 2, 2009 1:00 PM

By: Christopher Ruddy

Within days of becoming president, Obama was quick to find a scapegoat for the economic crisis.

He has railed against Wall Street’s “arrogance and greed.” Drawing attention to “shameful” Wall Street bonuses of $18 billion, he described them as “the height of irresponsibility.”

I am not going to defend Wall Street excesses. It is unclear to me if these bonuses are excessive. But let’s put all of this into perspective.

America’s economy is the engine of the global economy. We represent less than 5 percent of the world’s population and a disproportionate 25 percent of the world’s GDP. We remain the reserve currency of the world.

Wall Street has played a major role in American capitalism.(???) Its executives should be well compensated.

I am not angry at Wall Street because the current economic crisis was not caused by Wall Street.(??????) And Wall Street is not prolonging the pain.(?????????)

Our economic problems have emanated from Washington and from the Federal Reserve.

If any one needs to be shamed, how about starting with Congress? Congress has offered little oversight of Wall Street.

So this simpleton loon (look up what he is “famous” for) says that it is not the thieves fault!!

It is the cops fault for not watching the thieves every move!!!

Can you say more electoral bloodbaths ahead for the Old White Guy Party?

“A 64 percent rating is fairly high for a presidential approval rating, but it is nothing compared to the 84 percent rating Obama was getting in early January when he was still the president-elect,” said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland
