We now have a Treasury secretary

Timothy Geithner was just confirmed as Treasury secretary by a 60-34 vote, the most votes against a Treasury nominee since World War II. You can’t say the opposition was unfounded, not with Geithner’s tax problems. In other times, that alone would have been enough to squelch his nomination.

But other times aren’t these times. Despite the 34 votes against him — at least three of which were Democrats — Senate Republicans made no real effort to try to block Geithner. To their credit, they understood that the stakes are too high; the consequences too serious to risk leaving Treasury without leadership. It would be like blocking a Defense nominee in time of war.

Personally, I’m not thrilled with Geithner’s nomination either. But I don’t know how you find someone experienced and knowledgable enough for that position who also isn’t deeply embedded in the culture that helped produce these problems. I suspect some of those “yes” votes were produced by a similar thought process.

This appointment is utterly ridiculous, the new head of the Internal Revenue Service cheated on his taxes and, get this, actually blamed it on Turbo Tax, yes, the Oblahmi Error is unfolding exactly as I predicted.

Can I now go to an IRS audit and apologize for the tens of thousands of dollars I stole from the government, and then ask the agent for a job?

What a great example we’ve set.

(Yeah, like I don’t know that they would lock my as-s up forever.)

“You can’t say the opposition was unfounded, not with Geithner’s tax problems. In other times, that alone would have been enough to squelch his nomination”

In my opinion, these are the times when we should be MORE selective and MORE prudent in naming “leaders” to help fix this mess.

Seriously, is there NO ONE OUT THERE that is competent enough to be Treasury secretary other than a man that blatantly cheated on his taxes?

Weren’t some people claiming just a few weeks ago that Hank Paulson’s expertise was absolutely vital, and that only he could solve our problems?

By Hillbilly Deluxe

January 26, 2009 8:40 PM | Link to this

Not only did Timothy Geithner have tax problems, he also was head of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York while all this was festering. He is part of the problem not part of the solution.

On another note, various news agencies are reporting that Richard Fuld, Former Lehman Brothers Head sold his wife his $13 million house in Florida for $100. Some believe this is to try to dodge civil law suits. Is there no end to this stuff?

If somebody doesn’t get a handle on this soon I’m afraid we are going to see something that makes the 1967 riots look tame. For those not old enough to remember, it was troublesome times.

I completely agree with Class of ‘98. Why didn’t we just get Bernie Madoff? I understand he’s real good with numbers. Why don’t we get O. J. Simpson for Secretary of Defense? This is the world we live in now. Honesty and character are quaint old-fashion customs. Corruption is not only tolerated but celebrated in society today.

If this wasn’t so scary it’d be funny. This guy can now head up the Treasury Department and not much is being said in MSM about it….but when Joe the Plumber owed a few hundred in back taxes it was front page news. Amazing.

Hillbilly Deluxe, the only end to this will be when there are no taxpayers left because everyone will be tired of working to support Washington and Wall Street. Yes, it will be worse than the 1967 riots. Think more like the French Revolution. What’s the difference between French peasants and modern Americans? We have the right to bear arms and having been exercising that right for over 200 years. They better think about that. So, although I liked Jay’s joke about buying stock in pitch forks, I recommend buying stock in bullets.

I love these right-wing hacks…they worshiped the President and told anyone who didn’t that they were unpatriotic…now, the shoe’s on the other foot and they are attacking the President on every front, and still somehow manage to maintain the moral high ground.

I wish I could be so…flexible.

Mr. Obama was modest and careful. In a rare slip, he told The Associated Press: “I’m not interested in the suburbs. The suburbs bore me.”

Hey bub……I live in the suburbs as does most of middle America.

That article came out a year ago. It’s funny when you look back.

Well, my week of waiting for Obama to show his brilliance is about over. CHANGE has already gotten very tiresome!

He proposes to make the national debt bigger than the Grand Canyon when the last “incentive” did nothing. That’s CHANGE?? (“Pork” is now called “incentive”.)

He wants to get us out of Iraq very soon. When? Very soon. Sometime. But we never planned to stay. That’s CHANGE?

He demands ethics and transparency in government and then selects a man for the treasury who acts like a cheat. Let’s call that SMALL CHANGE not worth a nickle. Blago might have been a more ‘ethical’ choice and he’s a lot more entertaining.

Well, Obama is making a little CHANGE. He wants to make sweet talk with every tyrant in the world. Formerly, we thought tyrants were BAD! Now it just takes a few kind words!

Obama is also busy copying Hillary’s health plan that has already been rejected once. That’s CHANGE?

He plans to close Guantanamo in a year or so. Sometime. Guantanamo is just a reward sop for his anti-war-no-mo libs. The little problem with the prisoners will be solved LATER. Much later. That’s the CHANGE?

I tell you, folks, the White House does not need a new pup. It needs a white charger for Obama to ride forth to battle with his plastic sword raised high saying errr “CHANGE”, just like “The Charge of the Light Brigade”. Not a man survived that fiasco.
