Nashville voters reject English-only effort
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
This is mildly surprising, and in a good way. And good surprises are pretty rare these days. Good on Nashville.
From the Nashville Tennessean:
“Nashville listened to its leaders — the governor, the mayor, and a vast coalition of churches, businesses and universities — and defeated an English-only measure by nearly 10,000 votes in Thursday’s special election.
No one predicted the massive turnout on the special election, one that inspired strong emotion from voters on either side. Ultimately, opponents said, the message that diversity is a good thing came through.
“With the defeat of this amendment, the citizens of Nashville tell the rest of the country that we are an incredibly warm city with an entrepreneurial spirit,” said Tom Oreck, a vacuum cleaner company owner who worked to defeat the measure.
The final was 32,144 for English only and 41,752 against — at about 19 percent, the largest turnout for a special election in a decade.”

So which languages are going to be used?
Who decides which languages are used?
How is it not discrimination to not put all languages used by residents of Nashville on Every public or government building?
If we are to become a multilingual nation, then in fairness to us being a melting pot, I feel it would be irresponsible and discriminatory to not include all languages then.

This is heartening. Just FYI, Nashville’s documented translation expenses have totaled $522,287 since 2004. By comparison, the special election cost $300,000. Whoever championed this election either wasn’t informed of or didn’t care about the costs associated with enacting anti-immigrant legislation.
Additionally, About 10 percent of Nashville’s nearly 600,000 people speak a language other than English in their homes, according to census data. The city is 5 percent Hispanic and home to the nation’s largest Kurdish community and refugees from Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

I don’t care what language anybody uses at home, with their friends, or in their private businesses. All legal and government documents should be in English.
At the present time I happen to be reading a book on the history of Texas. The earliest American settlers in Texas, including Sam Houston, became Mexican citizens. (Most still thought of themselves as Americans though). Later on many Americans poured into Texas. The Mexicans turned a blind eye to this because they wanted the Americans to serve as a buffer between the the Indians (Comanches in particular) and Greater Mexico below the Rio Grande River. Texas eventually split off and became the Republic of Texas and later the State of Texas. So in a sense Mexico failed to control its borders and lost Texas.

My daughter said that the first sentence translates to “The day after tomorrow is Sunday.” I just asked her to type something that she recently learned and that’s what she typed. I assume her second sentence was regarding your comment that she work at a Mexican restaurant.
Now, regarding the pros for having people who can’t read or speak English. For one thing, that means we’ll have people to translate for us when we ask for work at Toyota or when we need to determine how much that favorite Mexican dish at Los Charos will cost. But, for you, I suspect you might not want to be able to determine what the cook or waiter at Los Charos was really saying while they smiled back at you.

Business people need to be tri-lingual in most cases in most of Europe but don’t tell me that you will be able to go to Germany and apply for a drivers license in Spanish. Of course, most of the world is not trying to prove that they are the most tolerant people on the planet and that “diversity” and “political correctness” are more important than hanging together as a nation with standards that mean something. As each individual segment of America that we inherit from bad border security settles in towns and cities and establishes their own enclaves, the idea of being an American becomes less important. It is already happening in more cities and towns than are healthy for this country to maintain it’s American heritage. We defeated the Mexicans not too long ago and they haven’t forgotten it, you can be sure. The more we pander them for votes and the more department stores that have signs in Spanish to capture the Mexican market, the more of our security, identity and heritage is lost. We are indeed a nation of immigrants but most learned to speak English and acclimated to our country and became Americans. Most of these present day latinos are just quasi Americans, more interested in their own national identity than in the best interests of our country. The first step in our path to second nation status.
