President Barack Hussein Obama …
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

I like that he didn’t shy from “Hussein” in taking the oath.
The inaugural address was tough-minded and sober, I thought, and it succeeded in placing these difficult days in historic context. Other generations of Americans have risen to the challenge; we will too. He called upon the best of this country.
The language about staying true to our principles and values, of not sacrificing liberty in exchange for security and expediency, was particularly strong. Overall, it did not rise to the level of eloquence that Obama has displayed in the past, but I suspect that was a conscious decision on his part. He left the poetry to the poet; this was about governing, and about the difficult decisions ahead.

Despite all the criticism levied at President Obama about being “The most liberal” whatever elected, I find his constant talk about personal responsibility to be uplifting.
I am amazed that conservatives who put so much faith in personal responsibility can be so critical of this guy who so obviously believes in one of their core values.

My perception was Chief Justice Roberts and Pres Obama did not rehearse this. It’s usually a good idea as it can be awkward where the breaks will occur, where one will anticipate a natural ending to be as opposed to the other, if one is expecting a few words per phrase for effect for the listeners while the other one isn’t thinking in those terms…
In other words, this was not at all unusual for a swearing-in or for someone taking an oath. Highly understandable, to my way of thinking.

A message to my liberal comrades. For the past 8 years I and many other conservatives have had to listen to you call George W. Bush the devil, evil, Hitler, and many other derogatory names. Your downright hatred for this man turned you all in to vile hate-filled vipers. For 8 years we’ve listened to how democrats could run the country better. More jobs, more security and a better way of life. Here we are 8 years later and now is your time. Now is your time to put up or shut up. Bask in the glow of the newly elected president for tomorrow will bring great challenges. I, for one, will not call President Obama names. I will be critical of him when he makes mistakes. I will praise him when he does the right thing. But one thing I will not do is sink the level of many liberals. Just know that the expectations are very high for President Obama and I do not believe he can achieve greatness based on words. Great speeches will be overshadowed by bad choices and bad decisions.
Welcome to the world of Big Government.

Too bad our Chief Justice, no mental heavyweight himself, messed up the oath. If he could not memorize it, he could have brought a written copy. Or asked Obama what the words were—he knew it. Typical of a Bush appointee.
I thought the end of Lowery’s prayer was inappropriate. It was a prayer, not a slogan rally. There are many whites in this country (those without money) who are as discriminated against and mistreated as the blacks, Asians, and Native Americans who don’t have money.
All in all, though, a great inauguration. Something about Cheney and that cane just fits. He looks like an ill-tempered, crochety old fool. Too bad Cheney cannot experience what it is like to be, say, a former serviceman handicapped from service in Iraq. Since he had a hand in seeing that that happened to so many.

I think in most cases, not. So I often laugh about the observation and take no umbrage, unless, of course, it is directly said about me, personally.
But clearly there are a few here who already loathe the President so much that they will never, ever, ever give him a chance. Just as there were some who did the same to GWB.
And Taxpayer addressed that perfectly in his 1:26.

I know to critisize anything about Obama or this inauguration is going to labeled “sour grapes” but here goes; if Obama’s election is looked at from a purely political standpoint, and seeing all of this idol worship here and the media’s piling on adnauseum (and I quote, “the monuments seemed to be leaning in for a closer look at the man”) I can now see how pre-WWII Germany happened. The Germans were in desperate times and they too were looking for a saviour. They idolized a man they knew nothing about. They placed their blinders on and they worshipped, just as some of the people on this blog and in this country are doing. Can any one of you tell us who Barack Obama really is? You don’t have a clue what he believes or what he wants to do. You know he is black. You know all of the other presidents were white. Is that enough for you? Just because he is a different race? If it is, then I understand where this nation is heading. Nowhere. I guess we’ll see, won’t we? How are those of us who aren’t mesmerized by any politician or party supposed supposed to throw down our skepticism and not treat him like we have everyone else? The dims have a lot of nerve saying that the conservatives should throw in the olive branch and support this man, no matter what he does (especially after how Bush was treated by the press and media). You chose this type of politics, and if you think that the conservative way of governing is dead in this country, then I guess time will tell, won’t it?

I think we’re all misunderestimating president Obama here, I’m going to check the internets and see if any other Presidents have flubbed the oath…
By Swami Dave
January 20, 2009 5:06 PM | Link to this
For the record:
a) As I watched, I noticed the slips during the oath and sadly expected to hear the chirping sounds of people from both sides blaming the other and trying to give some illusion that it had any meaning at all. It didn’t; who really cares & kudos to both President Obama & Chief Justice Roberts for laughing through it.
b) In much the same way that I shared on the day after the election, I will be waking up tomorrow; same as today. Placing inordinate emphasis on the results of elections for candidates whom most of us will never meet is (in my opinion) a recipe for letdowns. I vote for the candidates whom I feel best represent my opinion, principles, and views and, then, contact those elected supporting or opposing the policies / legislation on which they vote. In the end, I see it as a major cause of celebration that transitions of leadership (like today) are peaceful and orderly as opposed to violent and forced.
c) I happen to disagree with some ideas voiced in the President’s speech specifically as they relate to the greatness of America and its role in the world. Unlike the tone & verbiage that was used, I happen to believe that America was (and is) great, it always has been, and our role in the world is as the leader to which all of the others look as a model. There is nothing that he is going to do to “make” America any of those things because we already were. America is in a challenging time and, as before, those exercising their citizenship and upholding its responsiblities have been and will be those leading us to better days.
Frankly, America’s challenges are not a failure of its taxpayers; they are failures of those sitting back waiting on the taxpayers to do for them what they should be doing for themselves. It is not a failure of our engines; we need more of the “cabooses” to start acting like engines & quit expecting to be pulled by someone else.
All in all, it is now time to go to work.

If Lowery had been white and said the same of blacks, the left would be throwing a fit. Racism won’t stop until that double standard stops. As I said before, the black community needs a leader to stand up and point them in the right direction. Maybe Obama can be that man? What a legacy that would be!

Just got back from a couple of errands, and let me tell you what, peeps, you can feel it out there!
You can actually feel the unity and the relief! And of course, the happiness that this day has arrived!
I think I underestimated (or is it misunderestimated, Mr. Bush?) the power this historic event would have.
People of all races and colors just look at each and smile. Sure this has always happened, but this is truly a different feeling.
(True, the worst in the Old White Guy Party will never open their eyes to to recognize it, but this is a longstanding problem of theirs anyway. So no big deal.)
But for the rest of us, wow!
And yes the effects of the flowery speeches and the rhetoric will die down with time, but there is no denying that there is no going back now.
And wish as they might, the “conservative” reactionaries cannot change that.
And either have to hate or join in.
SO JOIN IN!
When you hear this sound a-comin’, Hear the drummers drumming
I want you to join together with the band
We don’t move in any ‘ticular directions, And we don’t make no collections
I want you to join together with the band
Do you really think I care what you read or what you wear?
I want you to join together with the band
There’s a million ways to laugh, And every one’s a path
Come on and join together with the band
Ev’rybody join together
I want you to join together
Come on and join together with the band
We need you to join together
Come on and join together
Come on and join together with the band

Congrats President Obama.
I didn’t get to hear his speech so I read it. When I found it had little to no substance I wasn’t surprised, but I assumed he delivered it to glowing reviews. Oddly I’m hearing hints from both sides of the aisle that the speech wasn’t delivered with the usual flourish. Maybe knowing he has to start actually making good on his rhetoric weighed on him.
I did hear that horrendous poem and the bigoted Benediction though. Change must mean same old same old.
Oh and put me in the camp that says Chief Justice Roberts was the lead offender in botching the oath. At least the ceremony will be remembered for something. That and the classless left staying just as mean spirited as always jeering and serenading President Bush. Oh and telling us we all need to unite.

I thought Lowery’s “prayer” strayed off base. But I believe his poem at the end was a quote from someone (himself? Cassius Clay?) from the late 60’s, cause I had heard it before. I was offended by it, and it takes a lot to offend me. We cut him a little slack, though, because in some ways he lives several decades behind.
I heard no boos on the TV, but I was hissing pretty loudly at the time so it may have drowned it out.
I hope Bush stays home in Texas till he is called to account for his lies, deceptions, and otherwise dishonest dealing to the American people. But Cheney first. It would be nice if he could get to appreciate somewhat what it is like to be in a wheelchair like so many of our servicemen are. Of course, his was self-inflicted, which isn’t quite the same as him sending them to this war.
I hope at noon they changed the locks on the federal treasury.

NO CLASS — (((A brass band playing Hail to the Chief just about drowned out the boos. As George Bush stepped onto the inaugural balcony outside Congress, the vast crowd’s reception was, at best, lukewarm.)))
(((He ignored chants of “no more Bush” and “bye bye Bush” from the masses in the Mall)))
CLASS — (((In keeping with custom, Bush left a note for his successor in the top drawer of the presidential desk in the Oval Office. Press secretary Dana Perino said the letter contained good wishes and were about “the fabulous new chapter President-elect Obama is about to start”.)))
(((At a final press briefing, the White House said that even on his last day, Bush was at his desk before 7am for a last round of briefings with his national security adviser, Stephen Hadley, and his secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice.)))
