When Bush told us to just go shopping
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
In his Washington Post column yesterday, David Broder looked back at the last eight years and located what he considers “the greatest moral failing of the Bush presidency” in the days right after the attacks of September 11:
“‘But in that moment, when the country was truly unified and the people were more than ready to sacrifice, Bush asked for … nothing. He spoke of the need for ‘patience’ and ‘resolve,’ but at a news conference at Camp David on Sept. 15, 2001, he was asked, ‘Sir, how much of a sacrifice are ordinary Americans going to have to be expected to make in their daily lives, in their daily routines?’
Bush’s first words were: ‘Our hope, of course, is that they make no sacrifice whatsoever. We would like to see life return to normal in America.’”
The consequence “to the American people - both those living now and those yet unborn - was placing the entire cost of Bush’s ambitious, if not misguided, national security policy on the tiny fraction of American families with loved ones in the armed services,” Broder writes.
I think there’s some truth to that.

Now that our military will soon be having a new Commander in Chief let’s just see how patriotic Americans are to fill those ranks (especially with the changes coming to don’t ask don’t tell and Lord know what else).

Well, the boys down at Billy Bob’s were all down in the dumps about Wooten being put out to pasture. My buddy Jim Earl said it figured, what with this Obama firing all the conservatives in office and the AJC following his lead. And Joe Bill said if Obama made a sharp turn it would break this Julia Wallace’s nose.
Anyhow, I remember that day on 9/11. I done what My President said to do. I went shopping at WalMart and bought a new pair of white socks, seeing as how it was time for my monthly bath and I had wore the ones I had on for 30 days.
I don’t know why the libruls think we should of done something else. Most of us are too old to fight, and it wouldn’t do no good to make some kind of sacrafice. It’s for sure we didn’t need no tax increase to pay for the war, seeing as how we could just borrow from China and never pay it back. So it made sense to walk thru a store and keep a eye out for some bargains.
We got only two days of national sanity left. They’ll fly My President back to Texas and we will be left with a flaming librul and one of Those People to boot. I’m still putting all my leftover money in my cement vault and this Pelousy woman won’t never find it to tax it. People that don’t have a place to put their spare money better go shopping and spend it because the librul Democrats will be coming after it big-time.
Well, it’s me and the missus to Ryan’s after church today. First I’m headed down to the Church of Holiness to hear Rev. Postlewaite preach. I wish we had the Rev. Jim Bob Buice back, but the state won’t let him be around kids after they caught him buck-nekkid in the bushes with that boy. It was all a big mistake. He wasn’t doing nothing but trying to rescue the kid and he didn’t want to mess his clothes up.
Have a good Sabbath everybody and don’t try to buy beer today. It’s evil stuff on this day but OK on the other six days of the week.

Mike @ 8:51 just proves the old adage:

ByteMe @ 10:02 - That’s because in The Party Of PERSONAL Responsibility, no one is Responsible for anything.
Remember - it’s all Barack Obama’s fault. That which isn’t Obama’s fault is Bill Clinton’s fault. That which isn’t Clinton’s fault is Jimmy Carter’s fault.
Even though The Party Of PERSONAL Responsibility has controlled the White House for 28 of the past 40 years, and both houses of Congress for 4 of the past 6 - controlling all three simultaneously (looking at your, Corporal, since YOUR PARTY could have re-activated the draft at any time), they are NOT RESPONSIBLE for anything that’s happened.

The problem with these chickenhawks and assorted spineless politicians is that they have no skin in the game. Kinda like the gigantic clusterf&ck caused by derivatives - all side bets with someone else’s money, or in this case, their kids.
Mike “ponders” conscription. I have mixed feelings about this, but am not opposed to the idea that everybody ante up.
True, the neo-cons and their belligerent draft-dodging “leaders” might not put as many meaningless Support the Troops stickers on their Suburbans and Expeditions, if little Heather and Joey had come home in a box while “policing” Iraq in BushCo’s Great Colonial Experiment gone horribly awry, but we are talking about sacrifice, right?
But the best idea I’ve ever heard on this matter comes from Ralph Nader (like so many others)
DRAFT AT THE TOP
President Bush believes that the war in Iraq is “worth the sacrifice.”
The question then becomes - sacrifice by whom?
What about George Bush’s daughters - Jenna and Barbara?
Prince Harry served in Afghanistan.
Senator Jim Webb and Senator John McCain each have a son who has served in Iraq.
During World War II four of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s sons entered the armed forces, as did General Eisenhower’s son, John Eisenhower.
No double standard for them.
So, why not Jenna and Barbara Bush?
And why not military service for the children of all members of Congress - who have funded this criminal war in Iraq?
There is a certain moral authority to govern - setting an example - sharing in the sacrifice initiated by the White House - that escape George W. Bush and Dick Cheney and their enablers in Congress.
They have children who have declined to serve during the Iraq war.
While over four thousand, two hundred young American men and women have died in this needless, criminal war.
And tens of thousands have been seriously injured.
Why the double standard?
We have a simple cure for this double standard.
It’s called - draft at the top.
Pass a law that says whenever Congress and the White House take our country to war, all able-bodied military-age children of every member of Congress, the President and the Vice-President will be conscripted automatically into the armed forces.
Real change?
You betcha!
Less than fifty hours.

A FAILURE.

Is it in the hundreds of thousands? Millions?

On domestic policy - a failure
On foreign policy - a total failure.
On basic competency to run the nation - a failure.

Downstairs I read some quaint (read inane) reference to Rastus as a “caricature”.
And alas and alack, how these “caricatures” are unfairly treated here by the evil “tool” Bookman. Woe be unto them. Big woe. HUGE woe.
When will these ever-dwindling, never-served, never-will, emasculated, chickenhawks EVER quit b!tching like teenage girls about this blog and their victimhood? (I know, it is a rhetorical question.)
But, short of blowing a blogging gasket and getting banned again, I very much doubt it will ever happen. As growing up and growing a pair at this late date seems improbable.
And I surmise the Talibaptist’s never satiable, yet unfounded, enmity for this new president will continue to ramp up.
In fact, I’d almost bet that within the first year, one of these bible-thumping, southern conservofascists tries a James Earl Ray on that uppity one. (But NO bets with Boomer Sooner Andy. He doesn’t keep his word and pay off his debts when he loses ((all the time)). The welcher.)
I have an alternate “caricature” theory.
The witless and misanthropic Reich-wingers are in caricature when they DON”T show their true bigoted colors and obvious xenophobia and scoiopathy.
And as GGG correctly notes, the Party of Responsibility (& Various Other Stupid Slogans) has shown very, very little. So the frauds and charlatans who hijacked both the GOP and the term conservative are at a complete loss what to do next. (I have a couple of ideas! Some of which don’t involve waterboarding.)
And as 2/3 of Americans FINALLY see BushCo as the failure it truly is, what must the numbers be for these mind boggling bootlickers who still see him as the best thing since sliced bread?
One of the many reasons they couldn’t even nominate another neo-con this time, and why they keep getting absolutely hammered every other November.

rcs, re your 11:18,
I agree.
And that is not likely to change unless one or both of the following happen.
The far-right wing that controls the GOP moves towards the center. It would seem the far left has already started moving there, as the old guard is slowly being replaced by younger combat-veterans and other centrists. I see no such move in the GOP.
Or they keep losing elections in record fashion.
Even then, given the historically shameless and spineless capitulation by this US Congress as a check and balance on King George, as well as completely abdicating its oversight role to protect the American people, we are not in a very forgiving mood.

{{{{Bush had a rare opportunity to reverse the most poisonous tide in the western world: He could have argued that western self-loathing is a psychosis we can no longer afford. He could have told the teachers’ unions there was more to the Second World War than the internment of Japanese-Americans and it’s time they started mentioning it to our children. You can’t hold the 90% approval ratings forever, but, while he had them, George W Bush could have used them for a “teaching moment”: If ever there’s a time for not being mired in civilizational self-abasement, wartime is it. Yet the President figured he could fight a long existential struggle against America’s enemies in a culture that teaches its children there are no enemies, just friends whose grievances we haven’t yet accommodated.}}}}

Corporal,
Guys like you and me know all too well about low or high lottery numbers. And those memories, for many, are not very pleasant. To bring them back would likely split this country in two, like it did then.
Still, I personally think it would do a whole lot of people good, would help the nation and keep an enormous burden off of an army and marine corps stretched to the breaking point.
Nobody’s kids are responsible for the irresponsibility of their lame parents. Nor for the men, most of whom have never gotten remotely close to an AFEES, who send them off to bleed, suffer and die in the sand for what?
FOR WHAT?
Much of my anger at this duplicitous administration is knowing that these brave kids should still be alive, laughing and playing with their own kids, or their girlfriends or their parents.
Another needless American tragedy.
And another heartbreak.
How many more must we endure?

My goodness, what a celebration! The almighty liberals of victory spend the day here running down Bush and Cheney and the Bush daughters plus hints that the military needs the help of a “draft” to keep going.
These “celebrants”, who obviously live in a black hole somewhere, have never seen a ray of sunshine in their lives and CANNOT CELEBRATE. Their gears are so stuck in NEGATIVE backing that they are rusted in hate, pure ol’ ugly hate belched from their bottom blues.
Have you liberals never heard of gracious behavior? Have you ever seen an older gentlemen give his seat to a young woman? Have you seen a football player give a hand up to a player he has just tackled to the ground? Have you ever seen a loaded shopper swap places with the one behind him because that one had only two items? Have you noticed a president who GRACIOUSLY showed a president elect all around the White House so the move of the new one would be easier? And last, do you remember the man in the icy Potomac who gave his life preserver to one less able to swim after a plane crash in the river. The giver gave his life as he probably knew he would.
The definition of GRACIOUS is disposed to be kind, benevolent, courteous, merciful or compassionate. Did liberals lose every one of those values just because they WON an election?
Obama is right. Time for a change from the old ways of hostility. Let’s hope the liberals are listening. Their present condition is a disgrace to their winner and an anathema to his promises.

Now AmVet wants to explain his daily does of hate for many of us as his compassion for the military.
The men and women of the military VOLUNTEERED to protect this country and that is what they have done. They did a good job and did so willingly and proudly. They continue to do so.
Using them as some kind of sop for sorriness and surliness on your part, AmVet, does nothing but discredit the greatest armed forces in the world.

Over the course of a single day, an enemy invaded our shores, engaged us head on, killed thousands of our citizens and gave up their own lives in the process. A handful of killers initially armed with nothing more than box cutters came here in broad daylight and left a city in ruin and an entire world in awe. The war began and ended in a single day. The enemy came and commandeered weapons of mass destruction that we had built and left lying around unattended, fully loaded and armed, and used them as though they had been originally crafted for the sole purpose of bringing a nation to its knees. At the end of the day, all that was left was ashes. No prisoners, no surviving enemy. We needed an enemy to strike out against, someone to curse but they were all gone -- perished along with our own. After all was said and done, we could not even separate their ashes from ours. And so it began -- the war against terror. Yes, there was a legacy created for the history books on September 11, 2001 and he may well have been of our own making. The bottom line. We were caught off guard. We were asleep at the wheel. We got our asses whooped. Maybe, just maybe, we need to own up to that before we try to move on. Maybe, we have to sacrifice a little bit of pride first. It is more or less official now - George Walker Bush was the least effective (eclipsing even Carter), most derided (eclipsing even Nixon) president in modern American history.
Granted, he had to deal with two major calamities - 9/11 and Katrina. And how he and his staff (mis?)handled them is at the heart of this matter.
After those attacks (Uncle Sam is IMHO correct in his assessment of them), when we needed much reason and cautious, deliberate action we got hyper-excited, deceptive and partisan misinformation and fear mongering. That and an arrogant impulsivity based on a personal grudge.
After a brilliant start in Afghanistan!
Nonetheless, many of us hold him responsible for, what is in my opinion, needlessly losing those 4,228 American lives in Iraq. Along with the “collateral damage”. And if he is correct that he has created a longstanding island of a sane, stable, pro-American democracy in that sea of islamomadness, I’ll publicly eat every last word. But I just don’t think it’s going to happen. Never have.
When we needed immediate, coordinated and compassionate help after Katrina we got slow mo disregard and bureaucratic inertia. And more glad-handing and excuses.
And in a major way, our ugly little “secret” was then finally out in the open. For all to see. The poorest among us - white, black, brown, yellow or red - ALWAYS go to the back of the line. Does anyone really believe the response would have been the same for an equal disaster in Hollywood? (Florida or Cali.)
And now it appears that there are dark economic times ahead for many of us.
And some, of course, will blame Obama. But these seeds of destruction were sown long ago. And they have been faithfully tended. Ike was right about the military industrial complex. And swindlers and crooks simply used it to implement gangster capitalism. And in so doing, parted us fools from our money.
So by any imaginable measure, Bush, his cronies, his sycophants and especially this horribly cheap GOP imitation of conservative ideology (which was incredibly swallowed hook, line and sinker by gullible millions) have been abject disappointments. And yes, failures.
And now the nation reels under an enormous, growing burden, thanks to this eight year blunder of an administration nearly bereft of ethical governance and financial responsibility.
So, future generations of Americans will pay a VERY heavy price for the “mistakes” and criminal actions of these dishonorable men who were drunk with unregulated power and wealth, and the selfish inactivity of those co-conspirators who were elected to protect us and did not.
And though the blame certainly, is not theirs solely, there is the distinct possibility that due to the “consequences of a sustained orgy of excess and reckless behavior”, this hemorrhaging, outdated, untrustworthy and intransigent GOP may not be truly relevant again for years.
Just as in 1933, when the come-to-be beloved FDR replaced the ineffective Hoover, now, 76 years later, another Democrat of enormous promise again replaces, amid a slew of crises and perhaps a new Great Depression, a Republican with poor problem-solving skills .
Good luck, Mssrs. Obama and Biden.
You will need it and the nation is eager to help…

Agree.
One more thing on the draft.
A few months back I read where some of our pompous generals were against the draft because “the quality of our professional Army would decline”.
I guess they weren’t talking about the lowering of their own standards including intelligence test scores, criminal records and over-weight.
I served with Marine draftees and you couldn’t tell the difference not to mention WWII was won with a 66% draft rate. Someone needs to send them back to History 101.

It has been a while, Corporal, but I remember talking with others here about if the “screw up” rate in the military has changed.
I kinda feel, it hasn’t. Much.
I have no way of actually knowing of course, because I’ve been out for over three decades.
But I sense that there are still plenty of dead-enders, misfits, uncaught criminals, etc…
As well as the brightest, most professional, greatest people I have ever worked for and with.
And they do try to weed out the worst, of course, but I agree that lower academic abilities, and more physically unfit recruits is a bad thing. And, as everybody knows, there’s been no draft since 1973, so it’s been voluntary since then.

“And, as everybody knows, there’s been no draft since 1973, so it’s been voluntary since then.” — AmVet
Well, sorta. Most people who enlisted since 1973 figured they’d serve 3 or 4 years, depending on their hitch. When I was coaching soccer, one of my players enlisted in the army right out of high school (like I did, long ago). He’s a sniper, part of the original Iraq invasion with the 101st Airborne. After the invasion, he served another tour in Iraq and another in Afghanistan. He was discharged two years ago.
But, we have what’s called “stop-loss.” After being discharged and working as a EMT/fireman (and recently married), this young 24 year-old who has known nothing but war since 2003 has been recalled and will be deployed to Iraq in March. Four combat tours. Three tours in a self-inflicted disaster. One tour in a monumental screw-up.
It disgusts me. Who is responsible for sending this patriotic young man back and back and back and back until his luck runs out? George Walker Bush — and his supporters. The chickenhawks who love war — as long as they and their families don’t have to fight them. They can plead innocent for 2000, but they’re guilty as hell for electing and perpetuating the slaughter in 2004. They have blood on their hands. George Bush is responsible for the debacle of Iraq, along with his cheerleaders who continue to maintain that history will eventually exonerate him.
Maybe it will. “He kept us safe.” Did he really “keep us safe?” Since FDR, only one president was warned of a surprise international terrorist attack on our soil. That would be George W. Bush.
But, the jury is still out. Bush may eventually be revered for his policies and leadership. Just like the jury is still out on Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin and even Herbert Hoover. Despite the Holocaust, historians may eventually conclude Hitler was a force for Good — along with the Inquisition and slavery. And that the Great Depression was, well, great!
Keep the faith, wingnuts. His feckless, bloody legacy is yours.

Oh another blighted liberal, Greg Mendel. He wants to join Bush with Hitler, Stalin and the concludes that the Bush legacy is a feckless, bloody one. He complains bitterly about the policies of the finest military in the world, America’s armed forces.
Maybe he is another expert like AmVet who hasn’t been in the military in thirty years but wants to declare today everything is wrong with it. Poor old Corporal who probably hasn’t been in the service in forty years, doesn’t even know that there are sons of politicians serving in the military. Biden’s son is in the military and so is Sarah Palin’s son. There are others.
Why don’t you old complainers sit back and support the military and encourage the country instead of proclaiming your ancient woes to everybody who will listen? Go get a rocking chair and sit on the porch and take it easy. We appreciate your service but don’t try to ruin those that followed you. They need support now just like you did when you served. Telling them how sorry they are is not the way to do it.
My father, mother and uncle are buried in the National Cemetery at Beaufort, SC. My husband and son have served in the military. You seem to forget how many served and honored this country. You seem to have lost your own allegiance. Your comments show nothing but disrespect for our current troops and President Bush. It is very hard for me to have any respect for you.

Sorry Dusty but like so many others you are naive and totally miss the point.
1) Stop loss is immoral because it’s a backdoor draft.
2) There are a few political sons and daughters out there but there should be hundreds.
3) We know exactly what it feels like because we got zero support when we were in.
4) 58,000+ names are on that wall and I vowed I would not be silenced. I support our troops because they deserve it. What they do NOT deserve is the 3,000 to 4,000 lives that were lost in the Iraq debacle due to insufficient planning, lack of proper equipment and lack of overwhelming numbers of troops.
5) Dulce Bellum Inexpertis (War is Sweet for the Inexperienced). You have no moral right to even talk about my allegiance.
6) Have a nice day.

I got robbed while I was off at work one day. The police were able to catch the little miscreants — a local gang of teenage kids working under the direction of a local “adult” who handled the disposition of the merchandise. I went to court and testified about the burglary and the items that were stolen. A couple of the thieves were old enough to be given a choice — prison or the army. They chose the army. I wonder what ever came of them. Did they go on to be all that they could be.

Dear Corporal,
I have every right to say what I wish to say. Serving in the military is an honor but it does not curtail the speech of those who are not veterans.
If you discourage the military as you are doing (even though you were discharged many years ago), it does no credit to you. If the army is doing something illegal or the nebulous accusation of “immorality” then you should talk to your members of congress.
I believe that George W. Bush served in the National Guard as a pilot as his records show. Do you think it is “illegal” or “immoral” that Democrats continually lie and even fabricate phony records to incriminate the President who actually served?
You have joined the group of liberals who continually fabricate lies about service in the military. If that helps the country or the military I cannot see how. If terrorists who wish to destroy all Americans read these anti-military posts, they wiil be encouraged.
Don’t pay too much attention to GGGeek. He ran off to Canada because the USA did not suit him. That was a good move for us.

1) You have a legal right but no moral right to condemn my allegiance.
2) You continue to miss some of my points because you don’t realize that as a true conservative I call it like it is for Democrats or Republicans.
3) Yes, Bush served honorably as a pilot (and that training was more dangerous than what most people do in the military) but he and Rumsfield cost hundreds of American military lives through their ineptness and refusing to listen to experienced combat generals. I will not be silent on that issue.
4) The current military continues to abuse patriotic military personnel through stop-loss and the backdoor draft. I will not be silent on that issue.
5) Congress continues to abuse patriotic military personnel by not reinstituting an impartial draft so that the burden of the war on terrorism is shared more equally by American families. I will not be silent on that issue.
6) The military (especailly the Army) is so strapped for new recruits that they are lowering their standards beyond what is acceptable. I will not be silent on that issue.
7) True patriotism and true standing up for our troops goes beyond rhetoric ……… it involves giving them the tactics, equipment and personnel they deserve.
Those who have been there know that …….

Dear Corporal
I know nothing about your morals but I do read what you write here.
You consider yourself a expert on all things military although you haven’t been in the military in decades. I think that is a bit of self promotion.
Do you not admire Abe Lincoln who changed generals several times before he found one who could win? Did that make him a bad president?
Please name the country who has a better armed and trained military than the USA? There isn’t one.
Any military has a few that are not up to par. They are a very small majority. You try to make such a happening as a predominant characteristic which is not true. You complain about the citizens who protect us at all costs while overlooking the sacrifices they make.
HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN YOUR OWN MILITARY SERVICE AND COMPLAIN ABOUT OTHERS WHO NOW SERVE? I think so. I will discuss this subject with you no more.
