Israeli Arab parties barred from election

This does not bode well for the future, in ways too numerous to quickly count:

from Haaretz:

“The Central Elections Committee on Monday banned Arab political parties from running in next month’s parliamentary elections, drawing accusations of racism by an Arab lawmaker who said he would challenge the decision in the country’s Supreme Court.

The ruling, made by the body that oversees the elections, reflected the heightened tensions between Israel’s Jewish majority and Arab minority caused by Israel’s offensive in the Gaza Strip. Israeli Arabs have held a series of demonstrations against the offensive.

Knesset spokesman Giora Pordes said the election committee voted overwhelmingly in favor of the motion, accusing the country’s Arab parties of incitement, supporting terrorist groups and refusing to recognize Israel’s right to exist. Arab lawmakers have traveled to countries listed among Israel’s staunchest enemies, including Lebanon and Syria.

The 37-member committee is composed of representatives from Israel’s major political parties. The measure was proposed by two ultranationalist parties but received widespread support…..Roughly one-fifth of Israel’s 7 million citizens are Arabs. Israeli Arabs enjoy full citizenship rights, but have suffered from discrimination and poverty for decades.

Arab lawmakers Ahmed Tibi and Jamal Zahalka, political rivals who head the two Arab blocs in the Knesset, joined together in condemning Monday’s decision.

“It was a political trial led by a group of Fascists and racists who are willing to see the Knesset without Arabs and want to see the country without Arabs,” said Tibi.

Together, the Arab lists hold seven of the 120 seats in the Knesset.”

There is a better stimulus plan out there

by Neal Boortz

We now have the benefit of PEBO’s* general position on a plan to stimulate our economy. Government shall be our savior. We shall not want. More specifically, government spending. About $800 billion (probably more) will be created out of thin air and then spent by politicians and their cronies in an effort to get our economy moving. Some of PEBO’s spending ideas included “investing” in government schools and modernizing various federal government buildings in Washington and elsewhere.

The “investing in education” bit gives you your first real clue of just what Obama is proposing here. He is proposing to use the occasion of an economic crisis to provide cover for increased government spending that he’s been promising since the day he announced his candidacy. I doubt that someone can explain clearly just how investing in education is going to quickly stimulate our economy, but that spending will be there because it was promised – promised long before our crisis became apparent.

Obama’s stimulus plan is very little more than a plan to enhance and solidify the power of the Imperial Federal Government over our economy at the expense of the private sector and free markets.

Is there a better idea out there? You bet there is, and it came from the 1st Congressional District of Texas. Congressmen Louie Gohmert notes that the federal government collects about $100 billion in income taxes every month, plus another $60 billion in Social Security and Medicare taxes. If those of you who are government educated have a calculator handy, you’ll see that this adds up to about $160 billion a month. Now if you divide Obama’s proposed $800 billion stimulus plan by $160 billion, you’ll come up with five. This means that our government will collect $800 billion in income and payroll taxes from February through June.

So, Gohmert asks, instead of bureaucrats and politicians deciding how all of this money is going to be spent, why not let the people who actually worked for this cash make their own independent spending decisions for this money. How would you do that? Simple: declare a five-month tax holiday. From February through June everybody keeps their paycheck. No income tax withholding … no payroll taxes. What will the people do with this money? What, are you crazy? They’ll spend it, that’s what. Talk about stimulating the economy!

Let’s just wrap this up with a handy little chart. Politicians just love charts.

Stimulus plans’ affect on national debt

Obama’s Stimulus - The government prints $800 billion for government to spend, thus insuring that the money will be spent as politicians and government bureaucrats want it to be spent. Plan adds $800 billion in additional debt.

Six Month Tax Holiday - The government prints $800 billion to replace the lost tax revenue needed for ordinary government expenses while people are spending the money they earned to stimulate our economy. Plan adds $800 billion in additional debt.

Either way we add $800 billion to our deficit.

Who gets the power to chose economic winners and losers?

Obama’s Stimulus - Government makes the choices of who wins and loses. Winners include teacher’s unions, government contractors, politicians and businesses favored by government and political operatives. This plan grows government.

Six Month Tax Holiday - The people who actually earned the money get to choose the economic winners and losers through their spending decisions. Winners include private sector businesses that provide quality products and services. This plan grows the private-sector economy.

Either way $800 billion gets poured into our economy!!!

Who comes out with more power?

Obama’s Stimulus - Enhances the power of government and promotes the cause of a state -controlled economy.

Six Month Tax Holiday - Enhances the power of the individual taxpayer/consumer and promotes the cause of economic liberty and the free market.

Power to the people? Or to government?

Who gets the happy ending?

Obama’s Stimulus - Thrills those who love government

Six Month Tax Holiday - Pleases those who love liberty

Is there a detriment to the Gohmert plan? You betcha! And the flaw is fatal. If you declare a full tax holiday people are actually going to figure out how much they earn. No more of this “take home pay” nonsense. You get your whole paycheck. Now just imagine what happens in July with the withholding starts again.

Revolt.

Interesting article (way too long) over at Stratfor.

It addresses Obama’s Sunday comments on ABC regarding Iran, along with the NYT article regarding Bush rejecting Israel’s plans to attack Iran.

In summation:

The problem that Obama has is the same one that Bush had. He doesn’t want Iran to develop nuclear weapons, he doesn’t want Israel to attack Iran, and he doesn’t want the United States to attack Iran. Obama therefore wants to engage Iran in open discussion of the matter, as distinct from Bush’s more indirect approaches. That is a change. But the question that really matters — and this assumes that the Iranians will want talks without a prior commitment by Obama not to use military force under any circumstances –- is this: Once there are talks, what exactly will Obama say to the Iranians that hasn’t been said already?

Not a damn thing, but….

The United States doesn’t want Iran working on nuclear weapons. What will Obama offer them in return?

Obama made it sound so easy during the campaign. Will he make it too easy for Ahmadenijad?

It remains to be seen.

Dick was really turning into a head case and was talking about giving Israel bunker busters equipped with FA 22s, pilots, and flight plans. Bush said at that point that he told Dick that the American people might get suspicious and all Dick would say in reply was “You’ve got nothing to worry about. Sheikh Yousef Al-Qaradhawi On Al-Jazeera Incites Against Jews, Arab Regimes, and the U.S.; Calls on Muslims to Boycott Starbucks and Others; Says ‘Oh Allah, Take This Oppressive, Jewish, Zionist Band of People… And Kill Them, Down to the Very Last One’

Talking to the Muslim leaders in general and the Arab Leaders in particular:

“Oh rulers, this is a disgrace on your part. I do not want to say that this is prohibited, because many of you do not care about what is permitted or prohibited. But I say that it is a disgrace on your part to do nothing but watch while your brothers are being destroyed, slaughtered and tormented. This is extremely strange.

“Are these [Arab rulers] the descendents of Abu ‘Ubayda, Khaled ibn Al-Walid, Tareq ibn Ziyad, and all our nation’s conquerors throughout the ages?! This is my message to our rulers: They should heed their peoples when they make their decisions, or else history will sweep them up with its broom.”

“Even though Gaza has no gateway except for Egypt, Israel is surrounded by several Arab states. Lebanon and Syria, Jordon, and Saudi Arabia are all neighbors of Israel, and whoever wanted to set out [on Jihad] from these countries could have done so, if the gateways were opened. But it is as if we have become the protectors of Israel.”

Feeling left out? on their own? un-luuuuuuved?

Followed by an interesting piece “The Israeli Long View in Gaza”

Now off to watch 24. BTW…..were my eyes deceiving me last night, or has Janeane Garofalo been given a part in the show? Sho looks like her.

Mrs. G — I’m watching excerpts from Bush’s speech today on Countdown.

Pitiful.

Preemption is such a strange non-thing for one does not really know what one would have preempted until it can no longer be preempted. Preemption is just a code name for Are you feeling lucky today, Punk? Republicans like to use any response to that question as an excuse to strike. I like Israel it’s a very spunky country with the right to defend itself. Palestinians deserve a homeland too. Neither side has the moral authority to cast the first stone. Bush pulling the rug out from under Condi the other day isn’t playing well.

What Israel did in taking the right to vote away from 20% of their population is a huge blunder. It will probably get tossed, but that kind of behavior will not be easily forgotten.

No doubt there are thousands of government employees posting at blogs while at work that aren’t community forums for their work, so there may not be a perfect answer, but I would stipulate they can’t post to the blogs and the traffic could be monitored.

@ Pogo—

You wrote:

I would beef up the mass transit, not reduce it—specifically run trains more often than they are running now when off peak—and send more busses more frequently into “rural” Metro Atlanta, particularly when the traffic on the busses merits it.

I’d quickly connect all the transit systems to one, and I’d fold it into Marta.

@ Mrs. God @ 9:12P—

There have been no attacks since 911 because perhaps many of the attacks have been called off so that the appropriate attack with say, one of the many loose nukes known to be missing fromt the former Soviet Union. They may have been sold by disgruntled KGB who weren’t paid towards the end with the exception of Mr. Putin and a few of his homeboys.

No one has a clue where they are—least of all Condi, the so called Russian specialist.

By the way, Mrs. God— maybe you could help me out with a term since you are fond of deserts with a Spanish or Portueguese name found in lots of places, but particularly in Paris.

the last time I saw the word “homeland” it was in an Ibsen play I was asked to read for school that was written over 120 years ago. Was Bush an Ibsen scholar, because I never heard anyone use the term “homeland” until he did after 911.

A homeland (rel. country of origin and native land) is the concept of the territory (cultural geography) to which an ethnic group holds a long history and a deep cultural association with —the country in which a particular national identity began.

Which ethnic group would that be in the US that has recently been annoited a “homeland?” Would it be WASPS? Would it be the Piedmont Drivers? The Ansley Golf Clubers or the Druids of Druid Hills Golf Club? How bout the Commerce Clubbers? The Buckheads at The Buckhead Club?

The Nszis used Heimland and Vaterland (Fatherland) to refer to the homeland, and they even had a magazine named Heimland.

In apartheid South Afica the term was used to designate where black tribes could settle but not own land.

I have never heard anyone anywhere talking about “the homeland” but those in the Bush administration. I’ve never seen conservative journalists like George Will, David Brooks or Kathleen Parker use the term in any of their columns.

Peggy Noonan has written columns about how stupid the term is.

Is use of the term homeland supposed to galvanize public opinion and patriotism so people will back the war effort and go to the malls and buy some Blahniks or Jimmy Choos or a Judith Leiber bag (maybe a “Ritz Fizz Clutch” to wear around the homeland?

As part of his interminable 15 minutes of fame, Joe the Plumber has been doing a stint as war correspondent in Gaza for some right-wing blog. Via the NYT, here’s Joe’s informed opinion on war reporting:

“To be honest with you, I don’t think journalists should be anywhere allowed war [sic]. … I liked back in World War I and World War II, when you’d go to the theater and you’d see your troops on the screen and everyone would be real excited and happy for them. Now everyone’s got an opinion and wants to down soldiers — our American soldiers, our Israeli soldiers. I think media should be abolished from reporting. You know, war’s hell, and if you’re gonna sit there and say ‘Well look at this atrocity’ — well you don’t know the full story behind it half the time. So I think the media should have no business in it.”

Apparently, there are credible sources, MSNBC, for one, that validate that as recently as August of this year and since then, close to 550 Tons of yellow cake uranium were spirited out of Iraq aboard flights to some secret island, then put aboard a ship bound for Canada. It seems, if valid, that the Canadians bought this yellow cake from Iraq to help run their nuclear power reactors. The secret has been guarded since 2003, when discovered and kept quiet to keep it from being stolen by terrorists. If true, Bush knew about it and kept the secret, despite the criticism that he received from the liberals and the left wing press for not finding WMDs in Iraq. This will have to be validated for truth, but if true, the A**hole liberals both on this blog and throughout the liberal press have a lot of crow to eat.

RW—

You’re talking about the “Miss Teen South Carolina” Security that’s in place right now aren’t you. Boy those were the days—the Bushco days.

Our new national security strategy is to invite AQ to bunk at your house.

How do you think of such insightful nuggets reflecting hours of research?

One sure sign that the US is already tail between legs is that Chickenhawk called reporters by derisive nicknames like a towel snappin’ badass and Obama is calling them by their names with their press affiliation.

What a p*** fer sure. We need men’s men with real hair on real chests don’t we?

Here’s the kind of Security I want to see in the Homeland—a name from Nazi Germany, Apartheid Africa, and Ibsen plays over 120 years old used by no one in the US whatsoever with the exception of 9 day lameduck.

Maybe it will continue to be having the POTUS sit in a class room and wet his pants while reading The Little Goat or having Strategic Air Command on tape saying “Oh God What Do We Do Now” or having a VP order planes shot down when no one pays attention to him, while the chickenhawk POTUS flies aimlessly around in a plane afraid to return to DC with no clue what’s going on or what to do.

Maybe it will include Condi Rice on the 6th day of Katrina taking a field trip to the Upper East Side and at the 5th Avenue Faragamo store, buying Faragamos like DiFi wears (her tab came to a few thousand dollars) foreshadowing the RNC and Palin’s $200 grand fiasco, and then going to see the Monty Python musical Spamalot! at the Shubert theator while fellow theater goers stood up as one and booed her when the lights went up after the performance.

That morning the media documented 3000 people were stranded without food and water at the Convention Center and African Americans were fired upon trying to cross a bridge to keep fron drowning which must have brought fond memories of Alabama and Missisippi for Farragamo Condi.

Bush flew over that day from Air Force One claiming that he didn’t land because he didn’t want to divert law enforcement landing the next night and diverting law enforcement.

Condi went to the US open and hit the ball around with Monica Seles. That saveda lot of people in New Orleans you betcha, goshdarnit.

Cholera, typhoid, hepatitis and mosquito-borne illnesses began to break out overwhelming the health care system in La. and the CDC presence there.

Bush claimed no one expected the levee to break but it had been the subject of a major multipart story in a La. newspaper, as well as the focus of studies at the LSU center for Hurricaines for years.

Fast forward to tonight and there has been no construction of levees able to withstand a Hurricaine near Katrina nor or there plans to build one.

Meanwhile in the Netherlands the Delta Works has been built that makes what’s in New Orleans look like paper mache.

That night little former 3rd Circuit Judgge Mikey Chertoff (hardly emergency room material) proclaimed “We are extremely pleased with the response that every element of the federal government, all of our federal partners, have made.”

No command and control was established 7 days after Katrina hit.

Rove then began a campaign to blame local officials.

Right now the formaldehyde trailors are vibrant and in place even though Julie Gerberding, who has been given a week to pack out of CDC tried to cover the trailers in her testimony to Congress a few months ago.

Next day:

EARLY AM — BUSH WATCHES DVD OF THE WEEK’S NEWSCASTS CREATED BY STAFF WHO THOUGHT BUSH “NEEDED TO SEE THE HORRIFIC REPORTS”: “The reality, say several aides who did not wish to be quoted because it might displease the president, did not really sink in until Thursday night. Some White House staffers were watching the evening news and thought the president needed to see the horrific reports coming out of New Orleans.

10:35AM CDT — BUSH PRAISES MICHAEL BROWN: “Brownie, you’re doing a heck of a job.” [White House, 9/2/05]

The moronicity went on and on, and tonight disproportionate funding has been given to Missippi home of Haley Barbour and little has been done to rebuild NO or to protect it from floods.

Now that’s Seekoorityh with a capital “S.”

Bush style.

We need more guys like Sanford. If more people would call out these so-called black leaders as the race baiters that they are we’d all be better off.

Sanford accuses Clyburn of playing race card.

By Reid Wilson The Hill

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) accused House Democratic Whip James Clyburn (S.C.) of playing the race card instead of explaining increased spending he wants as part of a proposed stimulus package.

In an interview with The Hill, Sanford said Clyburn, the highest-ranking black lawmaker in the House, injected racial politics into their disagreement over what constitutes an earmark by raising questions about Sanford’s wealth and the plantation his family runs.

“He can’t come up with a solid argument” in favor of the earmarks, Sanford said.

President-elect Obama has said he wants a stimulus that is free of earmarks.

Clyburn, in comments made to Roll Call, called for allowing federal money included in the stimulus to be sent back home to lawmakers’ districts. Sanford and others say that’s an end-around that would allow earmarks in the legislation without calling them such.

The money would bypass governors’ offices and instead go straight to communities. Clyburn disagrees with Sanford, who opposes accepting that federal money.

Sanford has said he does not want additional federal funding despite the Palmetto State’s high unemployment rate and poor budget situation. This year, Sanford’s $5.8 billion proposed budget is about $1 billion less than the fiscal 2008 budget.

“[H]e happens to be a millionaire,” Clyburn said of Sanford. “He may not need help for the plantation his family owns, but the people whose grandparents and great-grandparents worked those plantations need the help” in the form of federal money.

Sanford called Clyburn’s comments “not OK”

“It steps way past not only the truth but any kind of rational explanation of the earmarks [Clyburn] is in favor of,” Sanford said. “You’re playing the race card as your way of trying to defend stimulus packages and deficit spending out of Washington, D.C.”

Sanford called the stimulus package that will emerge from Congress “a growing Christmas tree of earmarks that we have coming out of Washington, D.C.”

“The people who will be disproportionately hurt in [the spending process] are mid-income and low-income people,” Sanford said, accusing Clyburn of “ripping off the very grandparents and grandkids he alleges to support.”

“A deficit is a future tax,” Sanford argued.

Clyburn’s office would not directly refute Sanford’s claims, but did reassert the Democratic whip’s support for a stimulus package.

“I stand with an overwhelming majority of the American people — an aggressive stimulus package is essential to jumpstarting this economy, putting people back to work and restoring the American dream,” Clyburn said in a statement to The Hill.

Well how many times were there mentions of missles attacking the country of Israel?

I reasonably assume that is not important. Protecting the citizens by the government is not a priority just look at our borders where murder, rape, and kidnapping are rampant. Who cares?

And no citizen better not go there with a fire arm to stop them either. That citizen will be locked up pretty quick and for a long time.

Hamas and illegal aliens! Brothers with a cause. Both want to take over and put their stamp on their selected country.

Mrs G should have a website where she can retrieve their side and let we Americans know how wrong we are. It is our fault. Only the true blue blessed liberals are blameless.

Missles explode killing innocent people but we will not cry over them. They were in the wrong for being there. Just ask the liberals. I never hear anyone blame the Arabs. I guess they are too scared they may be targeted.

Now Arabs were denied access to the voting scheme of the government. Liberals think it is outrageous not to allow people into government that pledge to destroy it. HMMM I guess they do have something in common after all.

I hope this clarifies for 3 Rethugs who can’t read carefully, and apparently thing that running for national office is some kind of superficial beauty contest:

Yo @ Williebekind—

I’ll make sure you have the chance to see this since this thread is old.

I’m a “liberal” and I fully support Israel stopping Iran who is the main cause of problems in the middle East, so the simplistic uneducated stereotyping that the Rethugs often do isn’t going to appy to me here.

What I’ve noticed though is that the conservatives are all about projecting their fantasies about liberals in respect to Iran’s using their puppets Hezbollah, Hamas, and Syria to create instability and lob missles into Israel defiantly and then to whine about how cruel Israel is, but as usual there are no Rethug solutions as to how to paradigm shift Iran’s attitude.

Israel has the bunker busters that Jay Bookman simplistically believes they don’t have after reading the borrowed Sanger article from the NYT whcih was wrong on several counts and photos of ships carrying them prove this.

@ Communist AJC—

Comparing Jay Bookman’s grasp of foreign and domestic policy and Jay Bookman’s ability to write and express himself to the moron Palin is like comparing one of the NFL quaterbacks in the playoffs to your or your wife’s thowing arm.

And as for college graduate insight—I know a slew of people who have graduated “college”, med school and law school who have no grasp at all of the complexity of problems that Palin has displayed she doesn’t begin to understand.

If you perceive Palin to be a ten, (and I suppose you mean her looks, wtf does that have to do with governing this country?

@fed up—

I bring up Palin only when one of the nutcase Rethugs mentions her favorably. She’s going nowhere. Run her again and we’ll beat you by 10 X the margin we beat you by this time. The RNC isn’t going to make that mistake twice, but I’d love to see it.

I think Palin’s character, bigotry, racism, and McCain’s poor judgement in fantasizing he could put her a heart beat away from the Oval when he has had 4 recurrent melanomas—the last one requiring what amounted to a radical neck procedure is totally ugly. Only a moron would equate good looks as a criterion for voting for somoene and apparently you all are out there.

Her looks won’t get her elected beyond her current office as I’ve said many times and I could care less what she looks like. If a woman’s looks were important for office, all of the Republican women in the Senate would not be there. Kay Bailey Hutchison wouldn’t be running for governor of Texas when Perry leaves. I don’t judge a woman’s potential or accomplishments by her looks. I know that Rethugs like to imply that if you’re not focused on Palin’s looks, you must not be a “real man”{ which makes your perspectives even more stupid.

What issue do you solve by telling anyone you think Palin is hot, or you’d like to get your hands or other harder to find parts of your anatomy on Palin? Why don’t you mozie up to Alaska and see if you can get her away from First Dude? Bring clothes—she likes those, and then maybe you can use them to get them off her.

One thing faborable to your Palin fantasy is that she’s going no where beyond Governor of Alaska. No one but a minority of poorly politically educated people will vote for her.

Check and see if she’s anywhere near the innauguration in a week. Maybe you haven’t heard. She helped contribute to losing the election. Her unfavorables with voters who aren’t the hard core poorly educated Rethug base were exponentially high.

willie you remain a putztastic!

“Now Arabs were denied access to the voting scheme of the government. Liberals think it is outrageous not to allow people into government that pledge to destroy it. HMMM I guess they do have something in common after all.”

lobbyist Grover Norquist… announced his goal was to reduce government “down to the size where we can drown it in the bathtub.”

So maybe we really ought to not allow former Bushies to vote…..they want to destroy government too!

Fair is fair right, righties?
