Dick Cheney, the glower behind the throne

In an interview with CBS Radio, Vice President Dick Cheney “insisted that his influence within the Bush administration was overstated throughout the past eight years.”

“The notion that somehow I was pulling strings or making presidential-level decisions. I was not,” he said.

“There was never any question about who was in charge. It was George Bush. And that’s the way we operated. This whole notion that somehow I exceeded my authority here, was usurping his authority, is simply not true. It’s an urban legend, never happened.”

That’s the party line these days … at least some times, among some parties. But among conservatives, the talking points change a bit. For example, conservative blogger Erick Erickson of redstate.com and Georgia’s own peachpundit.com was invited to lunch with Cheney recently. Erickson got a bit “verklempt” recounting the experience at peachpundit:

“This is about him — about Dick Cheney, the great, private conservative leader who whispers in the President’s ears. The untold story of this administration, and one that I asked him about with very little success at getting an answer (to be honest, my question was poorly formed as it is a difficult topic), is that Cheney has been the great conservative influence at the White House.

Solid, credible, dependable sources on Capitol Hill, both staff and elected leaders, tell me Cheney is the guy who they go to when they White House goes wobbly. It’s Cheney who calms the waters and straightens the spines.”

I have a pretty good idea which side the historians will take, but time will tell.

I think Dick should have been honest with Herb. Herb put Dick in the number two slot to keep an eye on Georgie and to make sure he didn’t blow this career like he’d done so many times before. Dick just didn’t have the heart I guess to tell Herb. Maybe he figured that even Herb would figure it out on his own eventually. Anyway, long story short, Herb has hopes that his little one, Jeb, will continue to comfort him in his twilight years. Real Americans, however, don’t want to ever see another Bush set foot outside of Texas unless they’re exiling themselves in another country like Iraq or some other place where they’re sure to be welcomed with loaded, I mean, open arms.

I wonder if Cheney discussed his order to Scootsie Libby to leak Plame’s ID or his plot with complicit Dems for illegal wiretapping.

Maybe he regailed Red State Bozo with tales of how Bush DOJ with 11 days and counting until they are gone, has been harassing whistle blower Thomas Tamm, the former DOJster who leaked the illegal wiretap story to Jim Risen.

The incoming Obama administration is prepared to abandon George Bush’s doctrine of isolating Hamas by establishing a channel to the Islamist organisation, sources close to the transition team say.

Negotiating with terrorists. Our worst fears are going to be realized.

It’s slightly intriguing how in the final analysis the thugs think they gain something by knocking a commenter as a defense for the shortcomings of their party or the collosal screwups of someone like Cheney.

When you don’t like someone’s idea, try to grow enough of a pair to say why instead of saying xyz commenter is a sumbitch or using juvenile invective to say what amounts to the same thing.

Go after their ideas.

You’re not going to get your candidate elected by going on a little AJC blog comment section and posting that so and so is so and so.

You’re only going to get your candidate elected by having ideas that work and that other people will vote for.

You can sit here as many of you seem to do and rail about fantasies like Bill Clinton raping women or how bad Obama is 24 X7, but none of that is going to get any legislation passed you want, or block any legislation you don’t want.

That tack is also a substitute for learning the issues and the people in government. The more you waste your time saying xyz commenter is trash when you can’t advance an idea or issue you have the more you guarantee that your party is going to have less control.

Guilt by association which seems to be a major Repubican theme didn’t work in the last election, and it never will.

Bill Clinton isn’t likely to be in office any more during his life time or yours. You’re not running against Bill Clinton as much as he might wish you were.

As well being that he IS NOT part of the executive branch he IS NOT subject to subpeonas or any other investigative tool put in place as part of our government’s checks and balances. In other words, the Vice President is an island floating above the executive, legislative, and judicial branches and not accountable to any of them or the general public.
