What is Israel trying to accomplish?

Max Boot, the neocon’s neocon, is a good writer with a schoolboy’s naive enthusiasm for the benefits of war. But even Boot is of mixed feelings about the Israelis’ huge gamble in invading the Gaza Strip. It’s hard to conceive what end state in Gaza the Israelis are trying to achieve that might justify the large risk it has taken, but we’ll see ….

Writes Boot in the Wall Street Journal:

“The essential dilemma Israel faces is this: It can’t ignore Hamas’s attacks, not only because of the damage they inflict, but also because of the terrible precedent they set. Israel has always been a state that is one battle away from destruction, and it cannot allow its enemies to think that it can be attacked with impunity. But at the same time Israel cannot do what it takes to wipe out the enemy, because of the constraints imposed by its own public, which is far less willing than in the past to suffer or inflict bloodletting.

So the Jewish state is forced to fight an unsatisfying war of attrition with Hamas, Hezbollah and other entities bent on its destruction. The current incursions are only one stage of this lengthy struggle. The odds are that once Israeli troops leave, Hamas will rebuild its infrastructure, forcing the Israelis to go back in the future.

This is the definition of a quagmire, yet Israel has no choice but to keep doing what it’s doing. Unlike the French in Algeria or the Americans in Vietnam, it cannot simply pack its bags and go home. If Israel is to continue to exist, it will have to continue to wage low-intensity war for a long time to come — definitely years, probably decades, possibly centuries.”

That’s the sad truth, and I’m far from sure that Israel can survive that long under those sustained conditions.

Well, if you take to wrecking your neighbor’s mailbox and he blows up your trailer every time you do it, maybe the smart thing to do is leave your neighbor’s mailbox alone.

This Hamas don’t seem very smart. They got no A-bombs and Israel does. They got no tanks and Israel does. They got no war planes and Israel does. Seems to me they should stop firing the rockets into Israel. If they want to live, that is.

It does Hamas no good to show pictures of their blowed-up trailers to the world. Just stop blowing up Israel’s mailbox and their trailers will be safe.

That’s my opinion and it’s very true. Have a good day everybody.

This is actually something that Iran is pushing in order to get oil prices back up. They need those oil revenues to fund their own programs. Other Arab countries are in the same boat so they are more than willing to sit on the sidelines and see if they benefit from this as well. How many times do people have to say it, Follow the money. The sooner we get rid of our dependence on oil, the better.

You don’t “attrit” a cancer, then await its regrowth: you root out every speck of it. In the long run, the Germans were better off for the destruction of Nazism; and the Palestinians would be, for the destruction of Hamas. If they don’t know this now, they will know it later. For those who cannot live peacefully with their neighbours must be stripped of the power to disturb them. The compulsion to live peacefully can then lead towards the habit of living peacefully.-David Warren

Here’s another good answer-

The huge challenge for the Obama administration is going to be Iran. If Israel had yielded to Hamas and refrained from using force to stop terror attacks, it would have been a victory for Iran. If Israel were now to withdraw under pressure without accomplishing the objectives of severely weakening Hamas and preventing the reconstitution of a terror-exporting state in Gaza, it would be a triumph for Iran. In either case, the Iranian regime would be emboldened, and less susceptible to the pressure from the Obama administration to stop its nuclear program.-William Kristol, Treason Times

God speed to Israel, for I doubt we will see many victories against terrorism in the coming years.

Where is the Church when you need it the most. Why hasn’t the Church uncovered some long-lost scrolls that provide written evidence that in the beginning there were two nations living side by side in Israel. They could do it if they really wanted to have peace in the land. Of course, those long-lost scrolls would need to be translated into James, the Kings version, and given its proper place amongst the other great “books”. It could be called The Book of Life. Notice the similarity with The Game of Life. It’s an eternal struggle to the death.

What is Israel’s goal in all of this?…. Survival. Look at a map. Surrounded on three sides by countries that want their head on a pole…. Jordan, Syria on the East, Egypt on the west and Lebanon on the North, In some places bordering on the West Bank, the country is only 48 miles wide, dominated by high mountains that offer an enemy the right vantage point for the high ground. The sea is on the West… no place to go. All of the Arab world wants to see them go up in smoke…. millions of Muslims dedicated to their destruction. It is a wonder that they have lasted this long.
Their resolve is evidenced by their demeanor when attacked. Like hillbilly said, destroy my mailbox and your trailer gets the ax. This about the only language that Hamas understands Yesterday’s terrorist is today’s freedom fighter. Depends on what side you are on. This struggle is far from over.

The problem lies neither with Israel nor a two state solution, the problem rests squarely with Hamas. Israel would accept a Palestinian state (which see, return of Gaza), but Hama will never accept Israel as Hamas’ very charter calls for the elimination of Irsael. Your suggestion that the church uncover some “long lost scrolls” is foolish, In truth, it is probably little more than a run-of-the-mill liberal casting run-of-the-mill undue aspersions against organized religion and, in particular, the religious right in the US.

Clearly, Israle must exterminate the Palestinians to the last innocent bystander in order to ensure peace and security.

Only then can they relax their vigilance. It’s necessary for their survival, you see; the enemy must be exterminated 100%, and there can be no negotiation with the subhuman cancer that infests their neighboring territories.

Any besides me tired of supporting Israels gulag state? You would think that after being nearly exterminated by the Nazis that the Zionists would gain a little compassion. Sure, we ‘gave’ them a homeland (nevermind the people who already lived there) but they just can’t seem to get along with their neighbors.

Gaza is nothing more than a huge prison, a ghetto, a reservation. This war is nothing more than a prison riot on a huge scale; the inmates are hungry and live in squalor…they have no hope. You would have to be a fool to believe that anyone would just accept this type of existance and ‘live in peace’ with their captors.

Why does America support this policy? It’s sickening.

Just give each and every one a single huge nuclear bomb with each bomb being capable of wiping out everything within a two-plus nation radius from where it is situated. Further, if a bomb is moved, it will detonate. They can even specify the size of bomb they want as long as it meets the above minimum size requirement. There. Problem solved — eventually. “What is Israel Trying to Accomplish?”

Good question. Stated objective is weakening of Hamas leadership (read: thinning the ranks). Also lessening of rocket attacks.

My guess: Israeli ground forces will cut off major population centers and not go into them. Let the population witness Hamas attacks from their neighborhoods and draw their own conclusions. Israel clears the open areas of arms stockpiles and waits. International community calls for cease-fire. Israel asks for guarantees (Hamas rejects any compromise). UN finally commits to a force in the manner of Bosnia. Israel stays in place until UN forces arrive.

Now Israel has some sort of UN guarantee and Gaza residents see UN peacekeepers on their soil to prevent their government from continuing attacks.

Bosch your 11:22

Interesting perspective. Threats to one’s security can be assessed based upon (current) intent and the ability to effect that intent. Chavez may call for the obliteration of the US but we don’t take it seriously - he may want it but has no way to deliver. Soviet Union in the 1950s was another matter - they had the capability but their statements of intent were much more tempered.

Just Google “Hamas statements on destruction of Israel” and see what comes up on intent. That leaves capability. So far, it’s lacking. But the attacks are also symbolic - yesterday, commando-type raids, today, rocket attacks, tomorrow… what? Given they may not have, or be able to develop, weapons systems capable of attaining their goal, but some allies do, or given that they may desire to precipitate an armed alliance with other, far more (conventionally) powerful nations, I suppose the question is, is Hamas really a threat?

Israel withdrew from Gaza. I don’t think that’s an indicator of an intent to “obliterate” Palestinians. In fact, I’m not aware of Israeli government statements regarding their desire for the Palestinians on a par with Hamas statements regarding their desire for Israel.

“Pellet guns” to rockets what a ridiculous and foolish comparison. The Hamas rockets have killed people. No civilized government can accept that and its appalling that so called civilized people would try to rationalize killing and terrorism.

Palestinians have it no better in other Middle East countries. My bet is if the Gaza populace adopted a “go along to get along” stance things would be pretty good for them just as they are for many Palestinians in the general Israel populace.

Fair enough. I’ll hazard a guess that both sides will be able to give plenty examples of injustice and overreaction by the other side.

So given what is and not keeping the centuries-old animosities alive (which I’m not sure is possible with some of the players - they live to keep old hatreds alive) then the question is, what now?

I’ll submit that as long as one party states as an inviolate objective the obliteration of the other that peace, or even nonviolent coexistence, is not possible.

Regardless of indoctrination or espousal of beliefs, I rather think that all kids who are in whatever education system should be required to demonstrate proficiency in core subjects. Absent such data I find it difficult to accept one as better at education than another.

Bosh, Bosch, Bosch, you poor naive, useful tool for teerorism.

You write, “As I said earlier, Hamas can scream all they want to wipe Israel off the map, they cant do it.” When illegal actions (such as rocket barrages) do not have the potential to overthrow a given goverment but are able to kill individual citizens, a goernment must react as its primary purpose is to protect each of those who comprise its citizenry.

Further, you estimate that, “… if you lived in the same conditions being imposed upon them youd be hurling rockets too.” I certainly hope that i wouldn’t do things that could randomly kill children and other innocents.

In any case your 12:18 wasn’t posted when I wrote the 12:28 and the ending of your 12:24 response to Wyld Byll seems to belie your 12:18. Davo @ 10:12 AM - Well said! Israel was founded by the Globalist Elite (ie - Rothschild funding of the Knesset Building, etc.) as a base for the Zionist agenda. Sadly, many well meaning(yet deceived) Christians are hoodwinked (by shysters like Hagee) into supporting Zionism via Biblical distortion/apostasy.

Israel’s key goal appears to be spreading itself (geographically, economically & influence wise) via various methods. Unfortunately, far too many U.S. Congressmen & Presidents are beholden to AIPAC & the Zionist agenda. Instead of putting valid American interests as first, second & third priorities, many of the Zionist pawns on “Crapitol sHill” have bowed to AIPAC pressure and put Israeli interests above American ones!

Palestinians claim to want only one thing - their own homeland. What many fail to remember is that Israel was willing to concede a Palestinian state but Arrafat turned it down.

Now, you have Hamas as the elected power base and what is their stated objective? Not to obtain a seperate Palestinian state but rather, TO DESTROY ISRAEL.

If any of you were the leaders of Israel, how would you respond to such a threat when you know it is made by an entity being supported by those with the capability to carry it out (Iran, et al)?

Israel has repeatedly demonstrated its willingness to peacefully coexist with PEACEFUL Palestinians but when Hamas subjects them to daily rocket attacks what are they to do? As long as you acknowledge that self-preservation is the first human instinct, the answer is simple - they fight back!

What is Israel trying to accomplish?

To influence the Iraeli elections? There’s been a call to postpone while the conflict rages. No-nonsense Net-a-Yahoo is favored in the polls. Even Bush wasn’t wanting to see Bebe appear on the horizon.

Send a message to other, more threatening militant factions? Oddly enough, although Hezbollah threatened to join the conflict, they have yet to do so. Could have launched a two front war from the north but haven’t as yet. Arms assistance maybe but no warm bodies.

Hamas and Hezbollah are Iranian proxies. Name one Arab country who would welcome Iran as a dominant player in the ME.

Heck! I’ve questioned whether Syria is even a fan anymore.

Cuts in oil production, tho eminent, may do more harm than good to OPEC countries. They’re dealing with their own economic decline. Can they afford to cut their main source of income? Will countries suffering economic woes be able to increase their demand?

A serious blow to Syria and Iran and destruction of their weapons and channels, tunnels, chunnels and boats used to smuggle them and a serious financial blos to both of them as well.

Destruction of the weapons channels from Russia and the duplicitious French sources.

Forcing the Arab slackers who have never taken responsibility for peace in the Middle East to get off the badasses and participate and sacrifice.

Shuttind down of the stupid Americans who kvetch about Israel squeezing Hamas and innocent civilians when Hamass brought it on themselves as did Hezbollah, Iran and Syria.

Forcing the US to participate in meaningful stability in the middle East instead of the Condi Rice clusterfck and Bush Cheney Clusterfck that has contributed heavily to destabilizing it.

Correction Katyusha rockets used by Hamas and Hezbollah supplied by Syrians, Iranians and Russians.

Katyusha multiple rocket launchers (Russian: Катюша) are a type of rocket artillery originally built and fielded by the Soviet Union in the Second World War. Compared to other types of artillery, such multiple rocket launchers are able to deliver a devastating amount of explosives to an area target more quickly but with lower accuracy and requiring a longer time to reload. These vehicles are fragile compared to conventional artillery guns, but relatively inexpensive and easy to produce.

Slick: Since the second Intifada (Palestinian uprising) began 8 years ago, the ratio of those killed is 5 Palestinians to 1 Israeli. This ratio is only so high because most of the hundreds of Hamas rockets launched every year are landing in streets and fields. If Hamas had any sort of sophisticated weapons there would be tens of thousands of Israelis killed.

What’s missing from this discussion is that, according to the UN and AP, more than 90% of those killed in the past 10 days are Hamas militants/terrorists.

My two cents: I’d like to see Hamas wiped out, the Palestinian Authority take control of Gaza, and the Palestinians given statehood.

From your own trough - Argue with them!!!

Shame on us for not realizing that there are parents in this country who … today support vouchers not because they are enamored with private schools but because they want a choice for their children. They want alternatives, and seeing none in our rigid system, they are willing and some even desperate to look elsewhere. Senator John Kerry

Democrats who had made careers as champions of the poor opposed the [school choice] plan, arguing that a solution that did not save every child was unacceptable. The Democrats got the worst of the exchange. They seemed more interested in preserving the public school monopoly than in saving at least some childrens lives [through vouchers]. Brent Staples - New York Times

I believe that if Martin Luther King and A.D. King were here they would say Do whats best for the children. It [the idea for school vouchers] may sound radical, but so were they.” And, “Is it moral to tax families, compel their childrens attendance at schools, and then give no choice between teaching methods, religious or secular education and other matters? Alveda King

Throughout my career, I have been an opponent of school voucher programs… . However, after much soul-searching, I have reluctantly concluded that a limited school voucher program is now essential for the poorest Americans attending the worst public schools… . Today, to force children into inadequate schools is to deny them any chance of success. To do so simply on the basis of their parents income is a sin. Obama’s Impressive New OLC Chief Nominee](http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/)

Whoever is confirmed as Chief at OLC is a huge deal and it is at the nexus of a ton of important issues that will ahve to be decided in the next few years.

If you haven’t been reading Glenn Greenwald @ Salon, you’ve been missing great analysis from a former US Attorney and Civil Rights litigator, particularly when he goes after the media for not doing its job and he goes after conservative and liberal media.

This is a good discussion of one of the crucial and most important appointments a President can make. That would be OLC Chief who in many ways is more important than the attorney general when it comes to controversial decisions in the war on terror.

The Office of Legal Counsel’s job is to give guidance about whether certain government policies or presidential prerogatives are legal. But it’s not meant to be an advocate for the president himself — that’s the White House counsel’s responsibility.

Steven Bradbury has been serving as never confirmed Chief of OLC for Bush illegally.

Bradbury clerked for the Silent One too afraid to ask questions in 19 years of oral argument Clarence Thomas.

Throughout 2006, Bradbury argued forcefully that the Supreme Court’s rejection of the administration’s military tribunals in terrorism cases was incorrectly decided. He argued that Geneva Conventions language barring “humiliating and degrading treatment” was hopelessly vague, and subject to “uncertain and unpredictable application.” He was a leading advocate of the Military Commissions Act of 2006, which revoked habeas corpus for terrorism detainees. He authored an opinion immunizing ex-White House counsel Harriet Miers from testifying in the U.S. attorneys investigation. And, most infamously, he apparently authored secret memoranda reauthorizing torture techniques, including waterboarding.

Evangelicals follow the teachings of Jesus.

1) When talking to the religious rulers of his day He said:

Unless you believe in Me you are dead in your sins.

2) Evangelicals support Israel because the Bible says:

Blessed are those who bless you and cursed are those who curse you ……… and because Jesus (the Messiah) will one day return……

And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon Me whom they have pierced ………. Zech. 12:10

Tear O’Rist @ 17:15 - While I’ll have to disagree on your assertion that the Bible is a “myth’, I’ll certainly agree that far too many well meaning Christians have been duped into the Zionist camp. For more on the Biblically fallacy of Zionism…

Remarkable,I’ve read many a blog. And I’m amazed at how many people have such a disdain for Israel in this latest skirmish. If Hamas would just cease the rocket attacks Isarel would cease their attacks as well, simple. But for those who keep putting up this stale argument about innocent women & children being killed,GIVE IT A BREAK!!!!! These people (palestine) support these thugs (Hamas),and wonder why Israel retaliates to rocket attacks. If the same were happening here in the U.S., I’m sure the statements would be different. But as always its Bush’s fault right!!(I mean Left!!!)

Jay, exactly why are you so vexed about what Israel’s goal is? If terrorists were banging missiles at America from foreign soil, 99% of the American people know exactly what our goals would be. Eliminate the problem. OUR problem is, you and so many of your little liberal friends have lived here in America where it is “safe” and you don’t know what it is like to wake up at 3AM to the sound of an incoming missile siren. We don’t know, and God willing we will never know, what that is like. You are coddled and you are are spoiled. Another thing, Chad Harris obviously has no life at all. Chad, let me tell you, the average person in America has the attention span of a gnat. Your little diatribes are spent on nobody and you impress nobody (with the exception of Midori, who will swallow anything that the left vomits out) and you waste the bloggers time in making them mouse past your rants. Your intellect would be better spent in trying to better the world, not sitting in front of a computer talking to faceless people that agree with you. We learn by interacting with people that DON’T agree with you.

Israel, like any nation, has the right to defend its borders and citizenry.

Its time to round up the offending cockroaches.

Has anyone else noticed how the muslim religion is waging it’s wars all over the planet through these supposedly separate groups; Hezbolah, Hamas, AlQueada, etc.? Somehow, these people are able to get weapons one would think would be reserved for military use. Where do they get them? Last time I checked, they don’t sell rockets at WalMart, so where does Hamas get enough rockets to lob them into Israel for weeks at a time?

You people are kidding yourselves if you think these groups aren’t just fronts for the governments in the middle east to wage war on their enemies without the retaliation that would surely come if these very same attacks came from the army of the people who supplied the weapons. Just ask Saddam and his sons how fragile life can be. Every last middle east leader knows they will face the same end if they carry out these attacks with thier national military instead of through these front groups.

The worst part is, you liberal apologists are falling for it. You’re foolish and you’re dangerous. Wake up.

To all the fools like Bosch, if I started throwing bricks at your house and hurt your family and you call the authorities and they did nothing you would try and stop me from throwing bricks at your family and property. Like wise if the US had Canada or Mexico shoot rocket (6000) within the US border and killed citizens for 3 years you would demand something be done.

Now we find out Israel offered to hand over Gaza back to Egypt and they said HECK NO, they done want that PROBLEM because of the Palestinians. Israel gets shot at with rockets from Lebanon and the world criticizes Israel for protecting itself.

People like you are a disgrace to humanity. You probably would blame the rape victim for the rape instead of the criminal. And the protestors criticizes Israel, but its radical ISLAM causing problems all over the world such as Mumbai India, the Philippines, Africa in the Sudan, and the source of agitation is Saudi Arabia.

This is tiresome…Hamas needs to be destroyed.now. Tell every Palestinian in Gaza they have 24 hours to come out w/ their hands up. In 25 hours, start on the outer edge and push those who are left into the sea and end this Gaza craziness once and for all.

“As for Israel… They should have learned from watching Bush fight the terrorists.”

And done what—attacked Turkey, or maybe Portugal?

It is time to understand that war on terrorism is really war on humanity. I see nothing to justify the mass killing of people when there is a better way of solving human problems There is a bloodless and humane solution waiting to be implemented by all the peoples of the world. This solution would immediately start providing more room for everybody so stress, artificial food, wars, polluted water and air would eventually vanish. Our planet could be transformed into an el dorado and utopia within a few generations if women would agree on having only one child.
