The shoe-tosser as a gauge of Iraqi progress
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
After that Iraqi journalist threw a couple of shoes at President Bush, more than a few commentators cited the protest as an encouraging sign of progress. As they pointed out, if Muntadhar al-Zaidi had tried something like that when Saddam Hussein was in power, the poor guy wouldn’t have survived the day.
That’s no doubt correct. In the bad old days, Zaidi probably would have been tortured, forced to sign a fake confession and then executed and dumped in the desert somewhere.
On the other hand, if Zaidi’s fate is indeed an accurate barometer of how much things have changed in Iraq, perhaps they haven’t changed as much as we might have hoped. Zaidi hasn’t been seen in public since his arrest, and a scheduled court date last week was canceled, raising fear among his family members.
One of his brothers was allowed to visit Zeidi in jail Sunday, and talked later with an AFP reporter.
“I met my brother for around an hour. He has been tortured while in detention for 36 hours continuously. He has been hit with iron rods and cables,” the brother said.
“There is very severe bleeding in his eye, and he has bruises on his feet and nose, and he was also tortured with electric shocks.
“He was forced to sign a statement confessing to receiving money from different groups and saying that he did not throw his shoes for the honour of Iraq. But Muntazer said I will not apologise for what I did — not now, not ever.”
According to AFP, the office of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki confirms receipt of the alleged confession.
“Muntazer al-Zaidi has expressed regret in a letter I received from him in which he revealed that an individual persuaded him to commit this action and that this person is well-known for beheading people,” it quoted Maliki as saying.
Iraqi officials deny claims of abuse, but his brother’s not buying it
“If I am lying, let the judge show Muntazer on television for everyone to see,” he said.
Frankly, the notion that Zaidi was put up to his act by terrorists who behead people … I ain’t buying it. And the fact that he allegedly “confessed” to such nonsense adds considerable weight to his brother’s allegations. All in all, such incidents don’t bode well for the long-term survival of Iraqi democracy.

And why are we only talking about 1 of 4 Iraq journalists there that day? What about the other 3 Iraqi journalists Jay??
You know, the one in front that partially blocked the second shoe and the two behind Zaidi that dragged him down and pummeled him a bit. Seems to me that 3 out of 4 ain’t bad….

Well, if the Braves want a great pitcher cheap they should go after that guy that throwed the shoes. Them things were coming at My President hard.
And maybe they should think about going after My President as a pinch-hitter. He was ducking and diving so good no pitcher will ever be able to get him out of the batter’s box by hitting him with a ball. It was better than watching the Braves by a mile. And he was smiling while he was ducking. Like he didn’t have no fear at all.

I’m sure Bush and Cheney counseled the Iraqis on interrogation techniques that did not reach the generally accepted level of torture, per US standards. Hopefully, Bush will intervene before his time is up and ask the Iraqis to pardon the man. After all, it’s not like he dropped a bunker buster on Bush’s farm or something. I mean, let’s be fair about this.

Fumble, Fumble, Foiled by Fumbles, Timeouts burned, and Vikings humbled.
Are there deep mystical forces working for the Falcons? Surely it would take a spell to make the football take flight from the scrimmage line and scramble backwards purposefully toward the Falcon’s end zone twice in just a few minutes.
Or do the Falcons have an angel? A mischievous angel with a sense of humor that harkens back to the keystone cop silent movie era. An angel who turned the vikings into bumbling fumblers. The multiple images of the vikings chasing the pigskin dozens of yards behind their line of scrimmage provides some of the lighter moments of the past 300 years of stooge history.
There can be only one reason that supernatural beings would favor our Falcons: The ghosts of Vicks Dogs will be avenged even if it takes an unholy aliance of witches, angels, and willful pigskins. OMG I just invented the cheerleader eligible play!

VIPERs strike back at criminals Recently formed unit proves itself effective at catching Cobb’s most wanted By DERRICK MAHONE
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Monday, December 22, 2008
When the driver of the black Mercedes-Benz nervously engaged them in small talk, Cobb police officers Nick Leone and Patrick Gray had a hunch this would not be an ordinary traffic stop.
Their suspicions proved correct when they found a loaded gun, 10 packages of cocaine, 200 prescription pills, a bag of marijuana and two loaded gun clips in the car.
And on the back seat: a Dick Cheney mask.
“I think Dick Cheney is a good man,” the suspect offered, drawing laughs from the officers.
It was a rare light moment for officers in Cobb’s Violent Incident Prevention and Early Response (VIPER) unit.

[[such incidents don’t bode well for the long-term survival of Iraqi democracy]]
I’ve thought a while about the implicit assumption that democracy = respect for the individual. One can likely make a pretty good case, as democracy is ‘of the people.’
But, in this case I think it is more of a case of not boding (boding? is that a word?) well for certain areas in the Middle East to come anywhere approaching Western thought on respect for the individual. Tribalism, slights against honor, sexism, all mired in a 10th century religious outlook makes me think we should keep them at arm’s length for a long, long time.

It seem as though it were only yesterday when… The Pentagon “wasn’t so horrified by Iraq’s use of gas,” said one veteran of the program. “It was just another way of killing people — whether with a bullet or phosgene, it didn’t make any difference,” he said. Former Secretary of State Shultz and Vice President Bush tried to stanch the flow of chemical precursors to Iraq and spoke out against Iraq’s use of chemical arms, but Mr. Shultz, in his memoir, also alluded to the struggle in the administration. “I was stunned to read an intelligence analysis being circulated within the administration that `we have demolished a budding relationship (with Iraq) by taking a tough position in opposition to chemical weapons,’ ” he wrote.
