‘Zuzu’s petals!’

“It’s a Wonderful Life,” with its Depression-era setting and its tale of greedy, manipulative bankers run amok and people struggling to keep their homes, will take on some added resonance in this 2008 holiday season. Aspects of the movie overlooked in better times come into sharper focus.

For example, Wendell Jamieson of the New York Times has a wonderful essay this morning on the true darkness underlying the Capra masterpiece (and don’t worry, he loves the movie.)

Yeah, well all that means is that Obama’s a muslim criminal…

How dare you bring up a cristmas masterpiece, don’t you know there’s a war on christmas????

gays are going hell. abortion is sin, but the actual people who have abortions are not sinners, the democrats are for allowing them to have them…

All my guns, goods and wealth have been piled out front on the lawn since nov 5 so Obama can pick them up for redistribution, if they don’t hurry it’s all going to be totally ruined by the rain. The neighborhood kids took all the cash out of the pile weeks ago, being the good little democrats that they are, or would that make them conservative capitalists???

I’m ready to sit back and watch the country go down the tubes (even more) and cheer baby cheer! because that make me right, and that’s what matters most.

All our problems are caused by black and brown people having babies, and wanting jobs…

Did I cover all the points???

First, Spankmonkey: Please “sit back and watch..” and keep your hands off the keyboard! Enough of your racist drivel.

“It’s a Wonderful Life ” reminds me a lttle about today’s world. Everyone too self absorbed to realize and thank their God for what they have.

Off subject: Why can’t the new credit card rules go into effect NOW? If they can take the peoples’ money to bail them out, the people should benefit immediately!

Finally, the dilemna that Watergate and Deep Throat presented played out as it should have. It is not right to have two different executions of the law. While loyalty to ones president and country is admirable, loyalty to the law and your oath to enforce the existing laws was the right thing to do.

Sometimes I wonder if there will be a “deep throat” with Shrub’s administration?

Finally, I saw an advance showing of “Gran Torino”, a movie starring and directed by Clint Eastwood yesterday. It was excelent; it is suppose to open at Christmas in Atlanta.

That brought back a lot of memories. Thanks for the link, Jay—I don’t often drill down into the NYTimes’ Movies section and I probably wouldn’t have seen that had you not posted it.

Couple of things Jamieson either neglected or chose not to cover that had always darkened up the movie for me (and like him, I do love the movie and think of/quote from it often)

  • Postwar postmodern creepiness. The real underlying message is, war’s over, get back to work and be glad for what you’ve got, peasants.

  • While there is a teeny-tiny bit of lip service paid to ethnic brotherhood (remember Potter’s depiction of the lower classes as a “bunch of garlic-eaters”?), at its core the film tells women that they’d best go along to get along, else they’ll wind up an “old maid”. And how can we forget Annie the maid (the maid! which this down-at-the-heels, barely-getting-by family still chooses to employ even though the Mrs. is a SAHM!) who is reduced to Hollywood’s version of noble Negritude, continuing to wear her maid’s outfit to a family wedding, and apparently having no life of her own.

  • Obviously I could go on, but will spare all of you.

    Thanks again.

Nice way to start the morning, Jay. Thanks.

Bankers - financiers - politicians - cops - all characters in the story and all illustrate what can happen if they use their positions to benefit themselves rather than others. Stewart illustrates what happens when one is guided by a morality not written into law and tries to treat others like he would want to be treated. The movie shows we’re all connected in some way or other - our words and actions have consequences - and shows the far-reaching effects we can have, for good or bad, depending on the choices we make.

Mostly, though, to me it show that our own personal attitude and actions do not have to be controlled by others. Present reality does not trump future hope.

    Thanks again.

Meanwhile, the Chicago Tribune published a new story about Illinois Rep. Luis Gutierrez, who racked up $420,000 through a series of suspicious real-estate deals. Texas Rep. Silvestre Reyes, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, came under scrutiny this fall for questionable earmarking. West Virginia Rep. Alan Mollohan has been under investigation for a separate earmarking mess. And then there’s Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd, who has yet to answer questions about the sweetheart mortgage deal he received from Countrywide.

One unfortunate side effect of Mr. Obama’s long coattails was that they helped the party’s more ethically challenged members get re-elected. Pennsylvania’s Paul Kanjorski and John Murtha, who both struggled to keep their seats because of earmarking travails, will continue to answer questions about their actions.-WSJ

Here’s a suggestion I saw for Illinois license plates: “Illinois: Where our governors make our license plates”.

I heard President Elect Obama is arriving in Washington, D.C. for his Inauguration via magic carpet.

One of the many great things about living in this country is that one can be as delusional as they wish.

For example, one can contend that now that the mulatto is the president-elect, the otherwise perfect country left by our serially impeachable president and VP is now ruined.

They can pretend that the current commander-in-chump and his gangsters have not critically wounded the enormous good will of the American people. And that of our allies and historic friends.

Or gleefully participated in the corporate destruction of capitalism while lavishing in piles of dirty money.

Or invaded the wrong country getting over 4100 Americans killed needlessly.

Or sanctioned the anti-environment crowd to rape and pillage whatever they chose. With NO regard for future generations.

Or attempted to auction off the sovereign people’s resources and assets to the highest bidder.

Or tried to turn the federal government into a quasi-theocracy with fools and jesters in the King’s court.

Or even deny that this administration has been a horrific nightmare that has set this greatest of nations reeling backwards.

No wonder they keep getting humiliated every other November. And that will continue for the foreseeable future.

Thank (your favorite deity here) their days as an imperious, unethical excuse for governance are nearly behind us now.

Let us all hope that in the next 30 days they don’t start WW III and/or screw up everything else they touch even more.

But I’m reasonably sure that is too much to ask…

That remark clarified nothing; today it seems like obfuscation at best and prevarication at worst. Nobody is likely to believe that Emanuel spoke more than 20 times with Blagojevich or the governor’s aide John Harris without informing Obama about those conversations. To insist that he had “no contact” when his top aide was involved in so many contacts is precisely the kind of parsing that undermines confidence.-Salon

    Parsing?

Gee, during the Bush years this would be known as a “lie,” and great upheaval and whining would commence and endure for the entire upcoming four years, the gnashing of teeth and rending of cloth would be mere sideshow to the pulling of hair and shrieking.

But now, not surprisingly, there is an eerie stillness over the Pinko Nation, save for the occasional outburst of BDS, the forlorn and mindless rambling dissertations of things they are unable to prove.

Viability Requirement: The firms must use these funds to become financially viable. Taxpayers will not be asked to provide financing for firms that do not become viable. If the firms have not attained viability by March 31, 2009, the loan will be called and all funds returned to the Treasury.

Definition of Viability: A firm will only be deemed viable if it has a positive net present value, taking into account all current and future costs, and can fully repay the government loan.-Politico

It’s funny. I watched It’s a Wonderful Life all the way through for the first time this past weekend, and I was struck by the darkness, as well. And I was surprised, somewhat, when Potter didn’t find redemption in the end, a la Scrooge.

We want always to believe that the greedy and corrupt, when confronted with the human suffering they’ve caused, will feel remorse and change their ways, but too often they just look for even more ways to pad their coffers and insulate themselves from the harsh realities faced by the poor. They can never have enough.

I was also struck by the dignified portrayals of the working poor. We don’t often get to see how poverty makes people even more vulnerable to corruption and greed — i.e., circumstances beyond their control.

And now, with this economic downturn, unchecked corruption and greed are beginning to affect — and even impoverish — many in the middle and upper classes, too.

Maybe the current situation is the eyeopener we need to stop blaming the poor and help them instead, through a living wage, more equitable schooling, better housing standards, etc.

I couldn’t make your first link work. If it’s anything like your second link, however, it’s mindless. For example:

On the day of George W. Bush’s inauguration, Chief of Staff Andrew Card issues a sixty-day moratorium halting all new health, safety, and environmental regulations issued in the final days of the Clinton administration.

It’s no secret that Clinton set a number of booby trap regulations in his final days in the WH. Bush repealed them. Good.

23 On the twenty-eighth anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, Bush reinstates the “global gag rule” barring U.S. funding for abortion counseling abroad. February 2001

A lot of taxpayers don’t want to pay for abortions. THere is not provision for it in the Constitution.

5 Bush suspends Clinton’s “roadless rule” protecting nearly sixty million acres of forests from logging and road-building.

The roadless rule was a mindless big green measure from radical environmentalists. They should stick to tree sitting.

17 Bush signs four anti-union executive orders, including measures to prohibit “project labor agreements” at federal construction sites and to remove job protections for union employees whose companies lose federal contracts.

Good. The unions did every thing they could to prevent Bush’s election. Did they think he was going to send them flowers? I’m sure these agreements did more harm than good anyway.

26 Senate Republicans introduce a bill to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil exploration. March 2001

And after big green and the dems killed it we subsequently saw oil at 140 a barrel.

I think both of your links are from left wing sites that just don’t like some of the things Bush did. To them I say TOUGH. Now you’ve got your guy, change it.
