No sweet-tea drinkers in Obama Cabinet
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Politico takes note of the fact that the diverse Cabinet that Barack Obama is putting together has no representative from the land where sweet magnolias blossom around everybody’s door. (LINK HAS BEEN FIXED)
And note who they turn to as quotable expert:
“Barack Obama is 15 picks into his Cabinet — he announced New Yorker Shaun Donovan as his Housing and Urban Development head on Saturday—but has yet to name one who hails from the South….”
Others acknowledge, however, that the paucity of Democrats in Obama’s cabinet reflects the declining political power of the red-leaning Southern states and the weakening bench of the blue team there.
“Who comes to mind immediately?” asked Charles Bullock, a political science professor at the University of Georgia. “No one, really.”
“The leading politicians in the South at least for the last generation have been active as Republicans,” Bullock added. “You just don’t have Democrats that come to mind as the go-to person or the expert. It highlights the thinness of the Democratic bench in the South The skill set is so depleted.”

I for one would prefer if Obama not place any Southerners in his Cabinet. The moment you MORONS open your mouths, us Norherners automatically thinks you are IGNORANT. That Southern drawl next to Sarah Palin’s North Dakota speak are two of the most annoying and ignorant dialect ever. You Southerners should stick to local politics and should not even be allowed to send representatives to the Congress who speaks with that Southern drawl. Speak proper English

Look I am sick of the name calling and foolish speculation. Why can’t Obama pick who he feels is best fit for whatever position, without it being an ordeal. We are one country with one president. As Americans we have a duty to support our president and his/her decisions. If we put as much effort into assisting our leaders and trying to work together nothing could impede our country. Here’s to 2009 and prosperity for all.

Our democratic political bench might be thin, but this isn’t a damned ball game, and you don’t have to be a politician to be a good cabinet chief. We have lot’s of good folks with perfect expertise for cabinet jobs, but they’re being snubbed. You’d at least think somebody could represent us as Secretary of Agriculture. What’s wrong with Bishop as Ag. chief? So much for change—the only change is that the South gets screwed.
If you’re a progressive Southerner who yet believes in the strength of our institutions and people, you’re damned if you do, and damned if you don’t.

That the BushCo Belt is unrepresented in the new Cabinet is no reason to be concerned. Far from it. It’s called the new reality, where the outdated GOP, in it’s current hemorrhaging form, is essentially irrelevant in a huge part of the country anymore.
Most reasonable Americans are simply unwilling to give the neo-cons any more chances whatsoever, given the debacle of the past eight years.
And that is unlikely to change significantly for several (many?) more years…

Obama is choosing the most qualified people for the posts that he feels comfortable with. History have shown, that with a few exceptions, most cabinet selections are partisan. Let’s face it, would any of us select anyone we’re not comfortable with?
The South can’t have it’s cake and eat it too. We can’t consistently be Republican, but at the same time, look to have any of our leaders on the short list of any cabinet selections in a Democratic administration.

Another criminal and hack outed on the “intelligent” Oblahmi team-
Dec. 15 (Bloomberg) — A federal grand jury is investigating how a company that advised Jefferson County, Alabama, on bond deals that threaten to cause the biggest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history, did similar work in New Mexico after making contributions to Governor Bill Richardson’s political action committees.
The grand jury in Albuquerque is looking into Beverly Hills, California-based CDR Financial Products Inc., which received almost $1.5 million in fees from the New Mexico Finance Authority in 2004 after donating $100,000 to Richardson’s efforts to register Hispanic and American Indian voters and pay for expenses at the Democratic National Convention in 2004, people familiar with the matter said.- Bloomberg

Southerners aren’t any more or less intelligent than any region. They are just ignorant…and what is worse, they are proud of being ignorant. Then you add their typical stubbornness and close-mindedness, and you have a whole region of people that refuse to even consider any other point of views than those they already possess. Obama has no reason to include anyone with that mentality.
And before anyone calls me a yankee and tells me to go back up north, I’m from the south..I was born in Charleston, SC, and grew up in NC and in Atlanta (which is unfortunately surrounded by east Alabama..I mean Georgia). But I have been lucky enough to have spent a few years in the Northeast and a couple on the West Coast, and I unfortunately have to agree with most of what Yankee says about the south.

Look at the failing school systems in the South…all run by Obama supporters. Clayton County is a good example. So yes Obama supporters have dragged education down in Red states. The intelligence in Red states typically enrolls in private schools or home school to avoid union thuggery and complete incompetence - see Clayton County, GA for the symbol of this logic. Frankly I wish Obama would take the whole rotting corpse of Clayton County BoE to DC to finish off public education once and for all. Maybe we can get local control back and rebuild education from the ground up.

2nd- Why do some of you feel that it is fine and acceptable for you to stereotype southerners with all of the insults and put-downs. Yet, you are some of the same people who would cry in outrage if anything was said this way about a race or sexual orientation.

Good morning sweetie. Bless your little heart. Are you one of those northern transplants who came to the sunny south following a job, or to get out of the ice and cold following retirement? Never mind, I have some wonderful friends who hail from north of the Mason Dixon.
At any rate, if you are living here (in the South), it is YOU who have the accent. On the other hand, if one from the beautiful Sunny South moves to your neck of the woods, notably they will speak with an accent. Since you’re so well versed in language, you may have noticed varying accents in different parts of EVERY state.
Since, in your vocabulary, the ‘crik’ flows toward the river or lake, what do you call that big pain in your neck? Oh I know; it’s a ‘creek.’

Well said Sweet Pea. We need to change from a nation of whiners (ala Phil Gramm) and come together to acknowledge our differences, but to solve our problems. No one will get exactly what they want, but constructive input, respectful dialogue, and sound decisionmaking will allow us to move forward. Wallowing in ones alledged misfortunes or disagreements, and excessive greed for money and having “your” way has gotten us to where we are today, up Sh!ts Creek.
Obama hasn’t even been gotten sworn in yet and the criticism of “what he’s going to do” has been deafening. If you can tell the future with such clarity, I would like six winning lottery numbers!

It really doesn’t matter who he puts where. There will be not the big change that was promised. Like all the rest he talked a good game, now he will do what he had planned. Raise taxes on everything possible and continue to screw over the everyday tax payer no matter what race they may be or claim to be. The government can bail out big business and foreign countries with billions of tax payer dollars, but everyday people will only get more and more taxes. It is the S.O.S from local governments all the way to the federal government. Same old S.O.S.D.D.
