Obama pledges complete account of Blagojevich contacts

The president-elect’s statement this morning on the Blagojevich indictment:

“Let me say that I was as appalled as anyone by the revelations earlier this week. I have never spoken with the governor on this subject. And I am quite confident that no representatives of mine would have had any part in any deals related to this seat. I think the materials released by the U.S. attorney reflect that. I have asked my team to gather the facts of any contacts with the governor’s staff about this vacancy so we can share them with you. And we will do that in the next few days.”

That’s exactly what he ought to do. Document every contact, every conversation and email, and ensure that the account is totally complete.

A lot of folks on the right are raising questions, which is fine. Those questions are legitimate and deserve answers, which Obama has now pledged to provide. However, it is not legitimate to portray the existence of questions as some kind of evidence of corruption. That is a foolish leap of logic.

There is no evidence of scandal or corruption regarding Obama in this case; to the contrary, as Obama points out in his statement, all evidence so far points the other way. I’d be very surprised if that changes.

He is on a roll:

CHICAGO (AP) — With cheers and chants that echoed President-elect Barack Obama’s campaign of change, jubilant workers agreed to a $1.75 million settlement that ends their six-day occupation of a shuttered Chicago factory that became a symbol of the plight of labor nationwide. Republic Windows & Doors, union leaders and Bank of America reached the deal Wednesday evening. Each former Republic employee will get eight weeks’ salary, all accrued vacation pay and two months’ paid health care, said U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, who helped broker the deal. He said it works out to about $7,000 apiece. “We lost the jobs but we got something,” said Lalo Munoz, who worked at the plant for 24 years.

I’m just curious but why would you deny this-

One report out of Chicago suggested the possible tipster was Rahm Emanuel, Obama’s pick for chief of staff and a potential conduit for any communications from Blagojevich’s office to Obama. But Emanuel’s office has denied that story.-Politico

Isn’t this something you would want to use to burnish your anti corruption credentials?

Got promoted a few years back. I remember exactly how it went. Told my boss who he should put in my recently vacated position and he told me that since I was moving on I had no input into my replacement. How hard is it for Obama to cover his interaction and why does it take time to release the contacts. Call your team around the table, tell ‘em to fess up to all contacts, and tell ‘em there fired if anything to the contrary comes up later. This is a five minute process that PEOTUS’ lawyers will obsfucate on. Well, at least his behavior is no worse that Candidate 5/Jackson, who lawyered up to protest his innocence. So far, there has been no evidence of wrongdoing on the part of Obama or his staff & they have publicly stated as such. Until something to the contrary surfaces, it is best to reserve judgement until the investigation is finished. His promise of cooperation (as well as that of Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.) are positive steps to reaching a quick & proper conclusion.

My biggest questions are focused at two levels.

First, in the taped conversations, Blago is reported to have been angered that Obama & his staff were unwilling to participate in his scheme. Usually, if I know someone will not do something that I want (through knowledge of their character or principles), I am annoyed that I know the answer before I ask (and am therefore wasting my time asking). I only get angry if I get a refusal when asking for something that I have an expectation of getting. Annoyance is a typical response to things that you never expect to get; anger is usually reserved for unmet expectations.

But hey, maybe he is a delusional, self-absorbed lunatic who actually expected everyone to grovel and elevate him in exchange for his appointment.

That does lead to my second concern, which I find the most disturbing. If Blago is of this poor character, is he another in this growing list of “associates” who exhibited ridiculous attitudes & behaviors that went unnoticed by Obama (in some cases for decades)? The question is truly did he (a) recognize these traits in these individuals over the time they associated and simply overlooked them while they could serve his ascent and acquisition of power -or- (b) somehow fail to recognize their ethical / moral problems and was largely duped by them?

Personally, I find this the more damaging question because neither answer is good. If (a), then we are describing behavior that condones poor behavior because it serves his own personal political interests. If (b), then the image of a “cognitive, thinking, wise, visionary leader” who has wisdom in judgement and discernment is a complete illusionary ruse.

Again, neither bodes well for our country facing the challenges that we will be addressing over the next few years.

Judge cites boy’s ‘raging hormones,’ reduces woman’s sentence for sex with teen By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008

NASHUA – A 38-year-old woman was sentenced to prison Monday for sexually assaulting a teenage boy she initially accused of rape.

Robin Mowery of Nashua was convicted in June of four counts of felonious sexual assault and two counts of sexual assault involving a friend of her teenage daughter. Mowery was 35 at the time; the boy was 15.

Prosecutors wanted her to serve 8 1/2 to 21 years behind bars, but Hillsborough County Superior Court Judge Robert Lynn handed down a lesser sentence of two to four years. She will receive credit for 180 days already served.

“Like it or not, an underage boy having sex with an older-aged girl is viewed differently than the other way around,” Lynn said at the sentencing hearing.

Lynn said he weighed the extent of the teen’s victimization against how aggressively the boy pursued Mowery.

“Young men have raging hormones. It doesn’t make him a bad person,” said Lynn, who also noted that the teen also tried to use the relationship as a “bargaining chip” to escape penalty for crimes committed as a juvenile.

Lynn also chastised Mowery for falsely testifying that the teen forced her to have sex at knifepoint. She also claimed he threatened to rape and kill her daughter if she spoke about their affair.

“That was complete baloney,” the judge said.

Mowery’s lawyer, Adam Cook, asked the judge to consider his client incompetent and strike the verdict. Mowery’s parents and sister echoed his claims that Mowery is mentally ill and needs help, but the judge said a doctor had found her competent.

Mowery’s sister, Jaime Manning, said the divorce of their parents and abusive relationships caused Mowery to concoct elaborate stories.

Assistant County Attorney Patricia LaFrance said prosecutors are reviewing Mowery’s testimony for untruths and could pursue more charges. The teen’s father also addressed the judge, saying the assaults changed his son and that he worries that further emotional problems will surface when he’s older.

I know it is Bill O’Reilly but how is this not sexism, and why are feminist not protesting in outrage?

As recently as 2005 Palin served as the director of “Ted Stevens Excellence in Public Service” 527 group. You know, the Senator(R) recently convicted of 7 felonies.

Funny, Palin never called for Stevens to resign. Of course Obama made it clear immediately that Blago should resign. Palin’s connection to Sen Stevens are a hell of a lot closer than Obama’s are to Blago.

OK, tcoach, let’s take a ride down memory lane but not too far — just a few posts back — and let’s see if we can get to the root of your animosity and deal with it just a little, OK? Let’s start with my post about the Jackson 5, shall we. You see, I was making a funny by doing a little play with words. The Jackson 5 was a band and we currently have this issue with a Jackson who is known as candidate number 5. It’s a thriller because of all the suspense associated with the “he said / no, he said”, stuff being thrown around but it is linked to the Jackson 5 because Michael Jackson, the lead singer, went on to produce Thriller — probably his best work ever. I would go on to tell you about how “Right Wing” but not “West Wing” ties in to this and how alien can refer to “not of the earth” or “not Bruce Springstein”, i.e., “not Born In The USA” but I sense that you do not like my humor. Oh well. I’ll try to not let that hurt my feelings if you will promise to do the same. Will you promise.

tcoach you are correct, she asked him to resign only after he was found guilty.
