Methinks the GOP protests too much….

I can understand Republicans taking solace from Saxby Chambliss’ victory Tuesday. It was an important win for the party, while a loss would have been devastating.

But really — let’s keep the celebration within bounds of reality, shall we?

Mike Duncan, chairman of the Republican National Committee, has other ideas. He writes in Politico that with the Chambliss victory, “Georgians refuted any notion that the ideology of the country has shifted to the left.”

No, they didn’t. At most, they refuted the notion that Georgia had shifted to the left, and I doubt they even did that much. In a state that favored George Bush by 16 points in 2004, four years later an incumbent Republican senator got forced into a runoff by an earnest if uninspiring opponent. Georgia shifted to the left, even if the shift fell well short of a Democratic win.

Duncan goes on to claim that “Notably, Chambliss won in spite of strong support by President-elect Obama and Democrat organizations for Jim Martin. Georgians clearly sent a message that any rhetoric about a liberal mandate is nothing but hot air.”

Hot air? Yeah, there’s some hot air around. But not from the source Duncan claims.

Look at the numbers. In November, Democrats picked up seven Senate seats after picking up six in ‘06. In the House, they picked up 30 seats in ‘06 and picked up at least 20 more in ‘08.

Oh, and they also won the White House.

Given all that, it’s going to take more than a widely predicted runoff victory in Georgia to “sen(d) a message that any rhetoric about a liberal mandate is nothing but hot air.”

Nonetheless, Duncan argues, “Chambliss’ reelection sends a message to all those who believe the Republican Party and its core principles are anything less than strong and competitive.” Personally, I’d say Duncan’s desperation is showing a bit.

In fact, he’s acting like a football player who gets flagged for excessive celebration with his team losing 48-7.

There were millions of African-Americans (and others) in Georgia and nationwide that voted for President based on race alone.

A great percentage of them hold conservative viewpoints, but the desire to see the ultimate barrier broken trumped party and stance on any particular issue. They are not liberals.

Not that anyone in the media would ever mention this however.

The Obama win was a shift away from corruption and lousy national management. The win by Chambliss was a reinforcement that Georgia conservatives can be easily duped by fear and lies.

Come again….what positive issues did Chambliss extoll during his campaign besides blocking a possible democratic super majority in the Senate?

“Fear and Lies”?? Did you happen to see the Martin ad that accused Saxby of wanting to add 23% on sales tax WITHOUT mentioning this is a tenet of the FairTax, which also eliminates the IRS and Federal Income Tax?

That was the most purposely deceptive ad I have ever seen for a political candidate.

And it was aimed directly and the ignorant and stupid people too dumb to question anything they hear on TV.

Congrats are in order for the Wingnuts on the legal fron where so many of you display your Karen Handelian expertise

1) Yesterday afternoon in an Eleventh Circuit courtroom Judge Birch dropped a bomb on Handel and her lawyuh Mark Cohen when he tersely issued an order to Cohen to provide a scintilla of proof that voter fraud made it necessary for a Voter ID. Immediately Cohen replied “Ah don’t have no proof to present in no motion Jidge Birch but ah will consult mah legal expert in proof of voter fraud, the esteemed legal scholar Jim Woo Woo the Wooten. LOL

So it don’t look good for the Handelians and all you fans of fat butted ugly women.

2) Gonzogate flames rage. A D.C. Grand Jury issued subpoenas Tuesday and Wednesday in Norah Dannehey’s (special counsel) investigation into Rove’s hijacking of DOJ”. She is looking into the possibility that former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, former Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty, former Gonzales Chief of Staff and others committed perjury, obstructed justice when they testified before Congress about the firings last year, and perhaps broke other federal laws. Gonzales, Sampson and McNulty resigned in disgrace last year.

3) A big shout out to skank Rachel Palose who was forced to resign as US Attorney in Minnesota last year after several veteran litigaqtors in her office resigned out of protest at the way she ran the office. Rachel had next to no experience litigating in a federal courtroom but a little detail like that never stopped the Rovians from putting her fat butt into the job she was forced to resign.

Office of Special Counsel had concluded that Rachel Paulose acted improperly when she demoted the guy who busted her for mishandling classified information:

Today, the Office of Special Counsel (OSC) announced the settlement of a prohibited personnel practice complaint filed by John Marti, an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) in the District of Minnesota. Mr. Marti previously served as the First Assistant United States Attorney (FAUSA) to the former U.S. Attorney, Rachel K. Paulose. He alleged that in April 2007, Ms. Paulose demoted him to a staff attorney position because he had reported to officials within the Department of Justice that she had mishandled classified material. OSC’s investigation showed that Ms. Paulose retaliated against Mr. Marti for making whistleblower disclosures in violation of the Whistleblower Protection Act.

[snip]

Based on considerable evidence of intent, animus, and motive, OSC concluded that Ms. Paulose constructively demoted Mr. Marti.

Today, OSC issued a second press release clarifying yesterday’s news:

The Office of Special Counsel (OSC) announced yesterday the settlement of a prohibited personnel practice complaint filed by John Marti, an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) in the District of Minnesota.

In yesterday’s press release, OSC did not note that the settlement agreement reached between Mr. Marti and the U.S. Attorneys’ Office for the District of Minnesota was entered into by the Department of Justice as a no-fault agreement and was not to be construed as an admission of liability by DOJ. The settlement agreement specifically states this.

Ah would jist lahk to say it wasn’t Sayraw Palin who won it for Saxbutt, but it was Geeezzzes who done got him his victory—praise Geeezesss. Geeeezes done made all the whatt reneck stoopids vote for Saxbutt.

From Da Muck:

*The Department of Justice has reopened an investigation into crucial allegations made by a whistleblower in the Don Siegelman trial, according to documents submitted last week by prosecutors in the case.

Siegelman, the Democratic former governor of Alabama, was convicted in 2006 on corruption charges. (He is appealing the conviction). The whistleblower, who works in the US Attorney’s office in Alabama, has claimed that, during his trial, there were inappropriate contacts between members of the jury and the prosecution, including messages passed by jurors revealing that some jury members had developed a romantic interest in an FBI agent attached to the prosecution team.

A DOJ investigation of the claims, launched after the whistleblower came forward and carried out by two US Attorneys, concluded that no such contacts had occurred. But in a letter to Attorney General Michael Mukasey last month, Rep. John Conyers, whose judiciary committee has been looking into the issue, questioned the thoroughness of that probe, noting that investigators had not contacted the jurors themselves, or the federal marshals who allegedly passed notes between the jurors and the prosecution team.

In the recent court filing — which responds to a filing made previously by Siegelman’s defense lawyers in connection with his appeal — prosecutors referred to that DOJ investigation, then added in a footnote:

Out of an abundance of caution, the Department of Justice recently reopened the investigation into this matter in response to concerns raised about the completeness of the investigation … It remains the case that we are not aware of any improper contacts.*

The Chambliss reelection shows that even a shallow man like Chambliss, who defended the sugar company in Savannah for its criminal behavior, can win so long as the Democratic party in Georgia is regarded as a black party. The Democrats have to whiten up. But the GOP, like the Democrats after the Civil War, are in danger of becoming a regional party instead of a national one. You do find rednecks and bigots in all of the United States but as we know they are concentrated down here.
