Stephen Colbert’s Xmas special … not so special
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
We just watched Stephen Colbert’s Xmas special. It was funny — good, but not great. The family consensus was that Colbert owes royalty payments to Pee-Wee Herman, because he “borrowed” so heavily in style, attitude and plot from Pee-Wee’s holiday special from ‘88, which honestly was a lot better.
Besides, Colbert didn’t have the heavenly intonations of the Del Rubio Triplets. Need I say more?

Did the columnist really just admit to being a Pee Wee Herman follower?

It’s in the way you dress. The way you boogie down. The way you sign your unemployment check. You’re a man who likes to do things your own way. And on those special odd-numbered Saturdays when driving is permitted, you want it in your car. It’s that special feeling of a zero-emissions wind at your back and a road ahead meandering with possibilities. The kind of feeling you get behind the wheel of the Pelosi GTxi SS/Rt Sport Edition from Congressional Motors.-IowaHawk

This may be a good time to admit that about a decade passed before I realized that Cowboy Curtis and Lawrence Fishburne were, in fact, the same person.

It’s absolute fear. Comedians know what happened to Mort Sahl when the Kennedys turned against him. Even Jon Stewart confessed to being a little unsure about any Big O satire.

Jack is back! best part of that “prequel” was jeering at the UN moral zero with a bloody nose.

I have to confess I was a little disappointed in Colbert’s X-mas special, too. The Report is always so spot-on hilarious, I guess I was expecting the special to have that same razor sharpness. But the bit where Santa rolled out of the chimney, cut Elvis Costello out of the bear’s stomach, and Costello sprang up and started singing— that was pretty funny. A bit macabre, but funny…
