Obama shows no sign of taking it slow

.

Barack Obama ran on a platform of change, a rather vague theme that left many legitimately asking just what kind of change he had in mind. Last night, in a discussion sponsored by The Wall Street Journal, we got some early clues about what’s coming. Rahm Emanuel, Obama’s White House chief of staff, suggested the administration will seek change on a large scale across a range of issues.

“What used to be long-term problems — be they in the health care area, energy area, education area, fiscal area, tax area, regulatory reform area — things that we had postponed for too long and were long term, are now immediate and must be dealt with,” Emanuel said. “This crisis provides us with the opportunity to do things we could not do before.”

With Obama still two months from taking office, details are still sketchy. But the ambitious tone of the administration is already pretty clear, and it presents Republicans with a dilemma about how to respond.

Conceivably, they could argue that big changes aren’t really needed, but I don’t think that’s going to get them very far with the American public right now. In the latest Gallup poll, only 13 percent of those polled said they’re satisfied with the country’s direction, while 84 percent said they were dissatisfied. Those are pretty damning numbers.

The better alternative would be to accept the need for large-scale change but offer a competing GOP vision of what such changes should be. I don’t see any evidence that Republican leaders are prepared to engage on that level. Their only remaining option would be to simply oppose ideas suggested by Obama without offering alternatives of their own, an approach that casts them as mere obstacles to change and guarantees they get steamrolled.

In other words, Emanuel and Obama are correct to see a great political opportunity to transform this country and finally address issues too long delayed.

Recognizing that I did not vote for Obama/Biden and I will undoubtably be in opposition to much, most or all of his efforts:

Obama should not “take it slow”. To accomplish whatever it is that he really wants to accomplish, his best opportunity is the first few months.

Supporters will quickly begin to backup if their issue is not amoung the highest priorities.

It would be easy for Dems to lock out the Republicans like the Republicans locked out the Dems 8 years ago. They ignored them in committee, ignored them on the floor. Bush wouldn’t even invite them to the White House.

Yes, it would be nice if the Dems did the same thing. But they won’t. They are going to try to work with wingnuts.

And mark my word, the Republicans are going to fight tooth and nail against anything and everything the Dems try to do.

But this time, the wingnuts are outnumbered. And the wingnuts will pay dearly again in 2010 for their obstructionist behavior.

Personally, I would argue that Republicans should define and articulate their own vision. There are a number of areas that do (and have for some time) needed addressing: energy, tax reform, fiscal policy, review of regulatory policy to promote growth and opportunity.

Frankly, if I disagree with the action that you propose to take, then it is only intellectually honest for me to come to the table with an alternative.

I would like to see them leapfrog from the hybrid healthcare insurance system proposed by Obama during the campaign to a single-payer plan, and include whatever it would cost to make the current players walk away without too much griping. (Obviously, there’d be worker displacement, since only a small percentage of those who’d administered private insurance programs could be hired to work for the federal program—and that has to be accounted for honestly.)

I suspect we could cost-justify it; furthermore, Obama already acknowledged in a primary debate that a single payer plan would be the most efficient way to go, even though that wasn’t what he was proposing at the time.

If ever there was a time to push it through, this would be the time to do it.

We need:

A public works initiative to rebuild our roads, schools and power grid. Bottom-up economics if there ever was one. The money can be found where they found the $700 billion to bail out Wall Street. Rural voters will fall in love with the Obama Administration when jobs and new infrastructure come their way.

Hold Rove, Cheney, Bush et. al., responsible for their crimes. At least Rove should be in jail. No Administration should get away with what they did to the Constitution.

Green jobs initiative including the Auto Industry. Refit and reopen the closed plants at GM, Ford, and Chrysler.

Gallup PO poll: When given a choice about how government should address the numerous economic difficulties facing today’s consumer, Americans overwhelmingly — by 84% to 13% — prefer that the government focus on improving overall economic conditions and the jobs situation in the United States as opposed to taking steps to distribute wealth more evenly among Americans.

Let Obama and the dems try to implement their wealth redistribution policy and see what happens.

There are plans in the works to initiate a national movement on behalf of the 84%. A movement that will ABSOLUTELY place such a financial burden on his administration and liberals that their only recourse will be to regroup and rethink.

Obama doesn’t really care what anyone thinks. He only needs people as a means to an end.

If the Republicans can be useful – and they toe the line he will draw – he will let them stay and pretend they are accomplishing something. He will even sing their praises as good little bi-partisans. The press will sing his praises for reaching out to his foes.

Same goes for the members of his own party, the military, business leaders, the press, the increasingly narrowly defined middle-class, etc, etc, etc.

Step out of line though, or make yourself inconvenient and you will end up like all the others he has shed along the way, for example, Wright, Ayers, the Chicago Machine, his grandmother.

He won’t do it heavy-handedly though. See how he has snared the Clintons. Don’t they look foolish? They don’t even realize it. Even if he doesn’t hire Hillary, he will have marginalized them permanently.

He has already turned over 50 million citizens into sheep.

Gotta disagree, Jay. Just as we saw with “don’t axes, don’t tell”, it appears that BO has neither the conviction nor the stones to make a decision, even when it rewards an irreplaceable part of his core constituency. Just as Nancy Filatio and the Dem Congress wouldn’t approve the TARP without “cover” which resulted in the effective failure of Wachovia at a great cost to normal Americans. Looks like the next four years are going to be a lot of hemming, hawing, and trying to avoid accountablity. If its the right thing to do, make the call and move on. Oppose a federal marriage-protection amendment.

Repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (which would open the door to forcing all 50 states to recognize same-sex “marriage”).

Expand gay adoption (which would leave vulnerable children without either a mom or a dad).

Repeal the so-called “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy (which would jeopardize military readiness by allowing open homosexuality in the armed forces).

It’s simple-minded to think of the stock market as a gauge of confidence in a president or president-elect. It’s an indicator of confidence in the nation’s economy, and that’s a much bigger and more complex matter.

At best, you could state that the market reflects how well a president’s economic policies have worked. Investors do not attempt to price stocks based on how well a future president’s policies may work sometime in the future.

Judicial Watch Statement on Obama’s Selection of Clinton Impeachment Lawyer Greg Craig to Serve as White House Counsel Contact: Press Office 202-646-5188

Washington, DC — November 18, 2008 Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton issued the following statement today in response to Barack Obama’s decision to hire Clinton impeachment lawyer and controversial Washington, DC, attorney Greg Craig as White House Counsel.

“It is disturbing that Barack Obama will allow Bill Clinton’s impeachment lawyer Greg Craig to serve as his White House Counsel. Many thought Barack Obama had beaten the Clinton political machine. Instead, he appears to have embraced it. Given his defense of Bill Clinton’s lies and obstruction of justice, what sort of legal advice will Mr. Craig give to President Obama? Will it all depend on what the meaning of ‘is’ is?

“Not only did Greg Craig defend the worst of the worst of the Clinton scandals but he also defended the violent government raid that delivered Elian Gonzalez back to Castro’s Cuba. In fact, we believe that Greg was working with communist Cuban government during the Elian affair. Greg Craig is the wrong lawyer to serve as White House Counsel in the Obama White House.

“Barack Obama’s White House personnel decisions show that he doesn’t seem to care about government integrity.”
