Lieberman gets off light
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) offered a qualified apology — and accepted a relatively light punishment — in exchange for a deal that keeps him firmly in the Senate Democratic fold.
Democrats, meeting in the Capitol this morning, voted secretly to allow Lieberman to keep his chairmanship of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee — despite his support for John McCain and criticism of Barack Obama during the presidential race….
“It’s a resolution of reconciliation and not retribution…I appreciate it,” Lieberman told reporters after the two-and-half hour meeting in the Old Senate Chamber.
Sources who were inside the meeting said Lieberman did not apologize for supporting McCain during the campaign, but that he did say he was sorry for some of the statements he made about Obama….
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), who pushed for tougher punishment prior to Obama’s intervention, bristled when reporters asked if he had let Lieberman off lightly….
“There is a time in Joe Lieberman’s career I will never understand or approve,” he added. “The question is, ‘Do I trust Sen. Lieberman?’ The answer is “Yes, I trust Sen. Lieberman.’”

Joe L is a good guy. Reid did right by him. To banish a guy for supporting the other party’s candidate is to say that you all have to fall in lockstep with the party and can’t think on your own or have feelings of your own. That would be nice for the party of freedom, wouldn’t you say?

Nice headline Jay. It’s almost like you want people to think some crime was involved here.
What a pleasant irony that the Democrat Senators had to have a secret ballot even while they’re pushing to take that very right away from the American workforce in union organizing votes.

The willingness to tolerate dissent or differences within the ranks exemplifies democratic ideals, so I’m gratified that the Democratic party did not banish Joe Lieberman.
I wish we could banish Management from this blog, though. I imagine him as that guy at the party (you know, the one who was only invited because he’s the host’s brother-in-law) who constantly tries to change the subject to what he wants to talk about, monopolizes the conversation and never really listens when other people insist on talking — ‘cause of course he already knows everything.

I don’t like Joe Lieberman. He’s a weasel. I would’ve kicked his sorry butt to the curb. This is the kind of crap that makes democrats look weak. I’m angry that they didn’t give his tail the heave ho! The only good thing about Al Gore having the election stolen from him eight years ago is that we avoided having Lieberman as VP.

Its obvious that Democrats think they can stop a Republican filibuster with Lieberman firmly on the (D) side. This is almost like a seat pick-up. Another smart American going from Republican to the Democrats. Good going.
Republicans will probably not be able to filibuster if the Dems get seats 58 and 59, which they have an excellent chance of doing. There are some (R)Senate seats up for re-election in two years occupied by Senators that will probably not risk their re-election by supporting a filibuster.
Of course you let Lieberman back. A no-brainer.
Should the Dems go after McCain next? lol

WASHINGTON -Barack Obama’s incoming administration is unlikely to bring criminal charges against government officials who authorized or engaged in harsh interrogations of suspected terrorists during the George W. Bush presidency. Obama, who has criticized the use of torture, is being urged by some constitutional scholars and human rights groups to investigate possible war crimes by the Bush administration
Two Obama advisers said there’s little — if any — chance that the incoming president’s Justice Department will go after anyone involved in authorizing or carrying out interrogations that provoked worldwide outrage

Eric Holder!? Are you kidding me? What ever happened to change you can believe in?? I mean come on…., Eric Holder is one of the worse clintonians Obama could have found. In fact, it was Holder that was at the center of pardons for fugitives like Marc Rich! And the investigation into that Clinton scandal clearly showed that it was none other than Eric Holder himself that gave the AG’s “neutral, leaning towards favorable” opinion of Rich’s pardon. Which led directly to Bill’s disgraceful pardons on his last day in office. Remember!!??

No, the Bush administration decided these people were trying to kill us, and threw them in jail without due process. The courts will decide if there is enough evidence to keep them in jail and if they pose a threat to our citizens.
If these men are found guilty, then they should stay in jail. I think you forget that I like bad people to stay in jail.
You know as well as I do that holding these prisoners indefinitely is not feasible. If you think they should be detained forever without due process, why not just shoot them instead now and get it over with?

Hey there! I just got the new Vince Flynn book - ‘Extreme Measures.’ I’d strongly encourage you both to read it. Especially if you don’t want to go to sleep at night.
Bosch - your 3:18 - slippery slope, there. I believe what a majority of the Court held is that habeas corpus (seeking relief from unlawful detention) applies - not trials as spelled out in the Constitution. As far as granting Constitutional rights to noncitizens or those not apprehended on US territory - if one grants the general principle of Constitutional protections, by what means does one decide which protections apply and which don’t?
I’ve held since the beginning of this action against jihadists that US criminal law doesn’t apply, neither should Geneva. But the Bush Administration was extremely slow on the uptake, the Court was operating within its restricted mindset (I believe it was Justice Breyer who asserted al Qaeda never declared war - and shame on the Solicitor General for being so unprepared he did not correct the misunderstanding) so we are slogging through this cobbled-together morass of procedures.

Hi Midori
Get about a four-pound pork Boston Butt. Cut slits in it and insert a sliver of garlic in each one. Use about four cloves, slice each into about six slivers. Sprinkle liberally with kosher salt. Heat a couple tablespoons of olive oil in an oven-proof heavy pot(like a Le Crueset). Sear the roast on all sides. Take the roast out and cover with several grinds of pepper. Add two or three pounds onions to the pan, cut in half top to bottom, then sliced a quarter inch thick. Let’em go about ten minutes, stirring occasionally, until they start to brown. Add 3/4 teaspoon salt and about 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme (or not, I like thyme). Continue for another ten minutes or so, stirring regularly until golden brown. Not white at all.
Add 3/4 cup apple juice to the pan. Preferably unfiltered. No frozen. Not from concentrate. Makes a difference. If you can find Martinelli’s it’s well worth it. Trust me on this.
Stick the pork on top of the onions, put the cover on the pot and stick in a 275 oven for eight hours. If the top doesn’t make a very tight seal turn the cover upside down, lay a piece of aluminum foil over it and crimp it around the edges. You don’t want too much steam to escape and have it go dry.
Take the roast out (please use tongs) and boil the juice down to about two cups.
Eat eat eat eat eat. sooo simple and sooo good.

I wasn’t on board with a lot of what McCain favored but the ACLU? We could at least make it a wash for McCain. While he was defending our liberties, he lost his freedom.
The last time I looked within the definition of “civil”, I found this:
civil: of citizens in their ordinary capacity, or of the ordinary life and affairs of citizens, as distinguished from military
Are they civilian or enemy (as in military) combatants?
The ACLU, imho, has been way off the skids for quite some time. A little slow in coming to the defense of Joe the Plumber’s right to privacy and NEVAH to Governor Palin’s.
They have a tendency to “pick” and choose. Usually they go for defense of their boogers. (ISH)

This is without any doubt whatsoever, absolutely disgusting. First of all I feel totally cheated. I would not have voted for Barack Obama had I not been badgered for weeks on end by my wife. She has unfortunately drank far to much of the Obama-Aid. I told her I was tired of voting because the Democrats always find a way to let me down on things that matter a great deal to me. My vote for Obama this year wasn’t a vote for him, it was a vote against Mccain.
So the first chance the new Democratic leader of this country gets to make a choice to really make change, he might as well be George W. Bush. BTW, my wife just called to tell me how sorry she was for making me do something I didn’t want to do. She also now feels jilted by Obama and sees no change whatsoever. She sees exactly what I see, the democrats bending over for special interests.
Of course if Joe LIEberman wasn’t attached to the hip of AIPAC, he would be out on his a* right now. But since AIPAC shows a great deal of influence over what Obama and apparently all of the other cowards who voted to keep LIEberman in his chair position, people who really want change can bend over and act as if it really isn’t painful.
I already knew that Obama and the rest of the Demo’s would conduct business as usual, so I wasn’t hyped up by his victory in the least bit. As a proud liberal I just hoped that maybe after hearing change over and over again he would at least attempt to be different. I told my wife this is exactly what would happen.
Why should anybody think that Barack Obama, who was not one of the 13 to vote against nominating Condoleeza Rice would do anything different than the Republicrat usual? Barack Obama is a man who refused to take a picture during his campaign with the Mayor of San Francisco because he was worried that rednecks might see him as someone who sees gays as human beings. A man who is obviously in the pocket of banking because he refused to vote in order to put a 30% ceiling in interest they could charge. Need I mention FISA, the patriot act, ect., ect., ect.
All those who wanted change saw a precursor of what is to come today. The same old BS that we have been putting up with for years. If you don’t have the backbone to stand up to special interests to the point that youre groveling at the feet of a piece of crap like LIEberman, how in the hell are you really going to help people who you promised change too? LIEberman, a guy who stood behind Palin over and over while she said you were “Pallin around with terrorists,” is a guy who should be the chairman of Homeland Security?
Joe LIEberman shouldn’t have been demoted because he is Judas 2K, he should be demoted because everything Barack Obama stood for in his campaign he was against. LIEberman is a chickenhawk extroadinaire.
If there is change going on in the Obama administration to come, we are all going to need Hubbel telescopes to see it. Today showed us all that it will be business as usual. The shameful part of this LIEberman garbage that went down today is the cowardly senators that voted for that jackass will all use the cover of Barack Obama to explain why they did it.
I called every senators office to ask them to strip his chairmanship away. I am sure I am not the only one who felt that way. But as usual, it isn’t about the citizens of this country, its about the old boys network that runs it and what they can do for themselves.
Pity us.

I’m just waiting to see if he or his attorneys comply with the Supreme Court request for December 1st. One step at a time.

Midori,
Bundy was a Republican, but with no ties to any national politicians. Jim Jones was close to the Carter’s and Mondale. John Wayne Gacy was a Democrat precinct captain that had his picture taken with Mrs. Carter, but I figured that was just one of those courtesy things and he probably wasn’t close to them. You should really study these things before you chime in.

I wrote to Lieberman on his Senatorial website requesting an apology to the Party and to the President Elect.
He should have had his Homeland Security Chairmanship revoked but remained on the lesser committees, and be allowed to caucus with Dems. If he decided to Become a Repub, then he would be out in the next election due to his ‘liberal’ views / values, and we would have a new Democrat from Connecticut. If he decided to stay, at least he would not be at odds with a SANE and CONSTITUTIONAL policy on Homeland Security.

SO sad. Republitards will have to console themselves with running a handfull of state economies into the ground for the next couple decades. Unfortunatly, Georgia is one of them.
