Wow. All that in one little pill?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
According to MIT’s Technology Review:
“A pill that delivers the health benefits of diet and exercise without any of the effort is one step closer to becoming a reality.
European scientists have found that mice fed a high-fat, high-calorie diet and prevented from exercising regularly can be protected from weight gain and metabolic disorders when given a drug that targets a gene linked to longevity. The treatment even increases the animals’ running endurance…. The drug also protected the animals from the negative effects of high-calorie diets: metabolic disorders, obesity-related diseases, and insulin resistance. It even improved the mice’s cholesterol.
(David Sinclair, a biologist at Harvard Medical School) says that a cousin molecule of SRT1720, which is even more potent, is currently in human trials and will enter clinical studies for the treatment of diseases like type 2 diabetes in 2009. “We could know as early as next year if the same types of benefits we see in mice, we see in humans,” he says.

Still. there is nothing like cresting the hill at Stone Mountain, breathing like a train, and heading down the last little hill to the finish.
I’ve said for years: If you can run the Mountain, you can run anything.

How long has the study been going on? This is certainly something that would need long-term testing.
When did exercise become a bad thing? Just add it to the list of shortcuts we try to take as a society. There is already a cure to obesity. Good diet and exercise, even genetic dispositions can be overcame through diet and exercise.
The money for this research could have been used to a much more needed cause.

That’s nothing, Jay. Scientologists at Faith and Hope Abound Junior College claim to have found someone to blame for the continuing nationwide decline in all that once was Republican. According to recent research graduates, the problem stems from cells that were found to exist only in Levi’s genes — the favored gene across the Bible belt. These genes have even been reported to give the male members of the Republican party a high-pitched voice and an uncanny fear of their own shadows but that’s enough of that scary story. Further, the origin of this gene was traced to none other than Pakistan — the country that introduced these Levi’s of an altered state thanks to a free trade agreement signed by, you guessed it, George Bush. An anonymous spokesperson for the Faith and Hope Abound Junior College said that this was just another in a long list of fine messes that George has got to get us out of. Of course, the White House responded with “Oh No We wont,” to which the College replied “OSUR.”
Seriously though, who would have ever thought that a fountain of youth would one day come packaged in pill form — just add water. If they could just figure out how to make it affordable so that everyone could live FOREVER, FOREVER, FOREVER…Forever…Imagine the possibilities — lifetime appointments to the Supreme Court, an eternal Hugo Chavez or worse, a George Bush that just keeps on giving and giving and giving….

Wow. Shame on all those Euro haters out there. This proves America is still loved overseas. This is a pill that will benefit those in the US only. This is like Statue of Liberty, you knew just what we wanted. Americans have been given the gift of sitting on their butts all day eating McRibs. Your kids will make excellent conservative bloggers.
To release this info now is Europe’s way of reaching out to us during our transition of power. The target of their generosity is also gracious. The only ones that will benefit from this pill are the Conservative bloggers and most Republican families.
If the Europeans could now just develop a pill that changes conservative diapers. When an ACORN blog appears the conservatives need their “stamina.” They must hurry though! Obama being our last President and all.

It’s a somewhat contradictory claim that the mice were kept from exercising yet also showed more running endurance.

While tcoach is technically correct that good diet and exercise can overcome most, if not all, genetic/endocrine/other disorders that make one prone to obesity I have to say that living that good diet and exercise lifestyle is an impressive commitment.
I speak from experience.
I am hypothyroid, insulin resistant, with high testosterone (I am female). I am an endocrinologists favorite teaching tool.
A year ago I weighed 217lbs (I am only 5’4”). Since I was turning 33 I started to worry that I would die before my son grew up. So I decided to make a big change.
First, starting in March of this year, I gave up all alchohol (this lasted 4 months and even now I only drink socially). Then I started eating 1200 calories a day. This is not a lot of food and it took me about 3 months to get used to eating so little.
About a month after starting my diet I began biking to work. It was only 3.5 miles but at first it was hard. Also, this isn’t very easy to do if you commute from the burbs to the city. Luckily for me, I live AND work in the city.
A couple of months after starting to bike to work I felt like it was getting easy so I started the Couch to 5K running program (Google it). By the end of July I was running for 30 straight minutes 3 x week.
Then in September I started a new job that is 8 miles from my house. I decided to continue bike commuting. It takes 40-45 minutes to bike each way and I do it 4-5 days a week.
Also, I am up to running 5 miles 3-4 times a week.
I now weigh 143lbs and wear a size 4 jeans (my arms and legs are killer muscular, which is why I don’t weigh less for the jeans size I am).
So, yes, you CAN defeat bad genetics and a bad metabolic disorder with diet and exercise.
If you’re willing to eat between 1200-1300 calories a day without deviation (except for rare holidays).
If you’re willing AND able to bike to work for a total of 80-90 minutes 4-5 times a week AND jog for an additional 40 minutes 3-4 times a week…meaning there are a few days in the week where you get in about 120 minutes of exercise.
All the while still dealing with your kid’s football practice, piano lesson, homework, PTA, cooking dinner, cleaning house, and generally being a mom/wife/employee/individual.
It helps if you live near where you work so you’re not stuck in your car for 2 hours out of your day (been there, done that, got fat).
So, yes, it can be done. But it’s not easy or convenient and sometimes it sucks.
If this pill makes it a little bit easier for someone else to accomplish what I have then MORE POWER TO THEM.
It’s not a race or a competition. It’s health.
OK, I’ve gotta go….gotta go get changed into my thermal layers for my cold bike ride home. Then for a 5 miler…..then piano, then homework, then dinner….
Peace and Health, y’all!

In the last few days Obama has come down on the side of indefinite detentions without formal charges, giving the CIA leeway in interrogation techniques, and supportive of missile defense.
Maybe McCain should have been the one to claim his opponent would be George W’s third term.

No sir, Viagra seems to be a GOP favorite. The screwing, which came with no dinner or a movie, will end January 20.

To Mrs. G.
1) Fillibuster, fillibuster !
2) Interesting question - I would really appreciate your response. This would make a great fiction movie, book, etc.
Let’s suppose someone is elected president. About a year into their presidency, irrefutable evidence is produced that they are not a U.S. citizen (remember, McCain had some problems here initally also). The U.S. Supreme Court rules as such but the president refuses to step down. The masses out there are becoming restless. The military is becoming restless. The Congress is in their usual duplicity.
What are your thoughts as to how this movie should end?
3) Also, see my latest comments on the auto bailout blog.

Sorry, AC/DC. George Walker Bush is STILL president. You may deny that, but stock market gamblers don’t. They are holding their collective socialist-wannabe breath until January 20, 2009, when your free market president gets the hell out of the way.
