A pox on all your houses, O’Rourke-style
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
.
In the history of “I despise everybody, including my friends and enemies, but especially my friends, and my enemies too, because they all earned it, and by the way I despise myself too, because I deserve to be despised and by the way, so do you” rants, this one by PJ O’Rourke is right at the top.
In fact, if it could fit on the tombstone — which it can’t — it might make a great epitaph for modern America, just in case we end up needing one, which according to O’Rourke, we will.
Feel free to quote your favorite paragraph. I was going to post mine here, but there were so many….

Yeah, kookman, great column:
They will make what homes they can in the physical, ethical, and intellectual slums of the South Side of Chicago. The South Side of Chicago is what everyplace in America will be once the Democratic administration and filibuster-resistant Democratic Congress have tackled global warming, sustainability, green alternatives to coal and oil, subprime mortgage foreclosures, consumer protection, business oversight, financial regulation, health care reform, taxes on the “rich,” and urban sprawl. The Democrats will have plenty of time to do all this because conservatism, if it is ever reborn, will not come again in the lifetime of anyone old enough to be rounded up by ACORN and shipped to the polling booths.

Power is the end game in politics now. Forget serving the people, protecting our sovereignty, creating a system that promotes self-determination and individualism. I’m speaking of both parties, conservatives as well as liberals. When the majority of jobs in America only provide for a living wage with no hope of upward mobility, the electorate will fall for ANYONE who promises a brighter future. I’m afraid that we have a different economy on the way that we have yet been able to identify nor name.

Guess who:
For the first time in 32 years, Democrats got more than 50 percent of the country to vote for their candidate in a national election, and now they want to lecture the Republican Party on how to win elections. Liberal Republicans have joined them, both groups hoping no one will notice that we just lost this election by running the candidate they chose for us.
Number 1 issue that Republicans need to correct before 2012, close the Republican primaries to only Republican registered voters. I think that the horrific economic depression that our country is headed into will get Our New Little Socialist’s as-s impeached, so at least the democrats will be distracted choosing between Bruno and whiny Edwards, but still, we do not need them unloading another McBushie on us.

Remember when Democrats lamented the growing budget deficit and spoke of the burden our children and grandchildren would face if we didn’t put our fiscal house in order? That was when Republicans ran the federal government and Democrats opposed tax cuts.-RealClear
WASHINGTON – A key House Democrat is writing legislation that would send $25 billion in emergency loans to the beleaguered auto industry in exchange for a government ownership stake in the Big Three car companies.
How long will it take for them to burn through 25 bill?

Looks like Mr. McCain’s got plent of time these days to carry some water
Senator John McCain is set to campaign for Mr. Chambliss on Thursday, and Gov. Mike Huckabee is expected on Sunday. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that President-elect Barack Obama is leaving his state offices open for Mr. Martin’s use, and some of his aides will campaign for the candidate, but Mr. Obama is unlikely to appear himself.

Looks like “Cold Cash Jefferson”, that bastion of liberal decency and paragon of representative zeal has, at long last, been indicted. This happens, even in the positive response of his voters, mostly black, probably all black, as they ponder his political future. I wonder how this patriotic American, a felon at best, can conjure up the balls to run for re-election. Are we to believe that just because he is black that he is immune from the normal turn of events for a felon or is it just that, like McKinney, he is a little above the scrutiny of the average American who would hold him to a standard that we as voters, should hold our elected representatives. Bookman never enters these waters. Jay, give us the opportunity to vent on this issue. You hold yourself out to be a journalist, show us that you are.

Eighty percent say trimming personal tax rates should be a goal when the new president takes office in January, but only 36 percent say the cuts should a very top priority, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll.

Did you?
“We, the conservatives, who do understand the free market, had the responsibility to—as it were—foreclose upon this mess. The market is a measurement, but that measuring does not work to the advantage of a nation or its citizens unless the assessments of volume, circumference, and weight are conducted with transparency and under the rule of law. We’ve had the rule of law largely in our hands since 1980. Where is the transparency? It’s one more job we botched.” — PJ O’Rourke

Interesting read. O’Rourke is a good writer. He is definitely right about the hypocrisy and weakness of the Republican Party. They had their shot and they blew it. They wanted to cut taxes, increase defense spending, while keeping the entitlement programs. The math just didn’t add up. That, plus stupid foreign policy will get you fired, no matter how much you pander to your base and demonize the opposition. Unfortunately for them, you won’t ever convince old people and their kids that Social Security and Medicare are a bad thing. So being the party of small government is a losing proposition in this day and age.

Anthony, what does JTP’s background have to do with anything? He’s not the person who said we need to “spread the wealth”, you know? He was merely the lucky American who happened to be standing in front of Obama the Great when he uttered those fateful words. Try paying attention to what matters for a change. Unless your toilet is clogged, it’s not Joe.
Greg, I agree on the big CEO bonuses. They’re out of hand. However, many of them are based on stocks and all the stock options in the world are worthless if you run the company in the tank. Obviously, that fact doesn’t make good press.

The U.S. is on track to complete its shift out of all Iraqi cities by June 2009. That is one of the milestones in a political-military campaign plan devised in 2007 by Gen. “History shows that ‘civilian national security forces’ bode ill for citizens,” Broun said in the statement. The flap has been watched with particular interest inside the State Department, which already is building a civilian corps similar to the one Obama described in a campaign speech. The Civilian Response Corps, as it is called, was launched two years ago by the Bush administration, after a bipartisan vote by Congress and the urging of Republicans, including former Secretary of State Colin Powell.-Urinal
Alright, show me where it says “just as strong and well funded as the military:”
The Civilian Response Corps of the United States of America The Civilian Response Corps is a group of civilian federal employees and, eventually, volunteers from the private sector and state and local governments, who will be trained and equipped to deploy rapidly to countries in crisis or emerging from conflict, in order to provide reconstruction and stabilization assistance.

RB: Your writing “Anthony, what does JTP’s background have to do with anything? ” is laughable. Wasn’t it the Repub’s basis of the campaign (or at least one of the basis) that CHARACTER was the essence of Obama’s flaws? While it is acknowledged that Repubs do not like welfare, and most would be appalled by having to use it (unless they are the downtrodden), he also had tax liens placed on his home.
It would be easier to accept except for the level of celebity (remember that word) he was elevated to by the Repubs and the personal attempt to benefit from the noteriety he was given.
