Might be a busy first 100 days…

It doesn’t sound like a go-slow agenda….

from The Washington Post:

“President-elect Barack Obama plans to push ahead with a middle-class tax cut soon after taking office, his choice for White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said today.

Speaking on ABC’s “This Week,” Emanuel also hinted that the president-elect would not postpone a tax hike for families earning more than $250,000 a year, despite the deepening economic slowdown….

Once the new administration takes power on Jan. 20, Emanuel said Obama would take quick action to expand health care coverage, revamp energy policy and make education more affordable. He called all of those initiatives part of a wider plan to shift federal policy to address the mounting economic concerns of middle class Americans.

The ongoing economic crisis “provides the opportunity, as the president-elect has said repeatedly, to do things that Americans have pushed off for years,” Emanuel said.

Transition advisers to President-elect Barack Obama have compiled a list of about 200 Bush administration actions and executive orders that could be swiftly undone to reverse White House policies on climate change, stem cell research, reproductive rights and other issues, according to congressional Democrats, campaign aides and experts working with the transition team.

Yep, let’s get to work killing babies and raising the price of energy.

Bush just recently pushed through a scad of rightist policies that I expect Obama will tackle, like new rules on the environment designed to benefit moneyed special interests. And there are old rules, like the stem cell ban and the ban on teaching contraception in African countries with high HIV rates, that also may be near extinction. This will be what I call change, and Obama will deliver. The sooner, the better.

Every time Bookman reads another liberal newspaper he comes up with a new subject.

Obama said that we were NOT going to have two presidents. It would be nice if Obama’s crew realized that they are not yet in the White House. We will find out soon enough about new policies. So we do not need to hear every move made by Democrats until the middle of January.

I haven’t heard any military news all week. Our soldiers are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan but WHO CARES? Not the press. Not the Dems except to complain.

Perhaps Bookman would like to remind us of how he’s against the war and isn’t about to support our military efforts. Guess he doesn’t like “fighting”. Neither does Obama.

OH well, military support, where is it? Americans too busy electing an anti-war president to pay any attention to the men and women fighting and dying for us? Certainly does seem like it.

Dusty, this perfectly illustrates another policy that I expect Obama to toss: the Bush/Rove belief that Americans don’t really need to know what their government is doing — or is going to do. If you read a newspaper instead of talking points, I’d think you would have seen stories this past week about yet another U.S. attack that killed civilians or reports that, as a result of Obama’s victory, Iraq seems ready to sign a new treaty with U.S. Maybe you’re just in denial about all that.

Has raising taxes during a recession ever worked to end the recession or does it only further deepen it?Every tax on business gets passed on to the consumer as higher prices.Higher prices on everything we buy.I would much rather see Obama keep his pitiful, feel good tax cut and keep prices down where I can afford to buy the necessities.

Taxing the rich sounds like such a good idea.It puts more money into the government coffers. This money is used to make government bigger and it demands more money to keep itself fed.In the meantime the consumer ultimately pays the lion’s share of the tax through increases in the price of the commodities it buys.Government under George Bush has grown by leaps and bounds.Government under Obama may excel Bush’s growth.

Mike H. Smith and GHT,

The only talking points I read are the AJC.com. Sometimes I read a few other commentaries , usually a link from someone or the WSJ. I haven’t seen any military news. I also watch Lehrer News Hour on TV and a few other news channels. In fact, I have noticed that George W. Bush will still be President for almost two more months. How about that!! Bet you FORGOT!!

The military does not censor news unless it will interfere with their movements. I have seen pictures of our war dead, flag draped caskets, the whole works in magazines and TV news. If you haven’t seen them, you just haven’t looked. Or you just want to sqawk as usual.

Iraqi government has made several proposals but nothing firm that I have heard of. Bush and General Petraeus want our troops out of Iraq also but they are NOT about to throw everything away that has been accomplished there. When the Iraqis are ready and willing, we will be gone, leaving them with a free country that they can control.

Maybe you should try SUPPORTING the military instead of making phony accusations about our soldiers. Try it sometimes. You might like it.

If Obama follows through with the tax hikes on the $250K next year, along with letting the Bush tax cuts expire, he can say hello one-term president only. We can call him Jimmy Jr. America does not like Marxism - although 62 million Americans just voted for one - a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

If he truly admires JFK then he should study his economic policies. Tax cuts and controlled spending always increase the economy and bring more revenue to the govt. Of course Obama doesn’t care as he said in his debate moderated by Charlie Gibson earlier this year.

I hoped that he wouldn’t be that stupid, but it looks like he is. Thanks Democrats and Obama voters - at least your control won’t last long.

Get out of Iraq and save $120 billion per year. The last I hear, we have lost 4000 plus American citizens and spent over $600 billion to create a demoracy in Iraq. We could also get out of Afgandistan and let the CIA do it like they used to do. All we want to do is get Bin Laden and his stooges, so why put yourself in a war we can never win outright.Fighting two no- win wars during a recession is fairly stupid unless you happen to be one of the capitalistic firms(Haliburton/Cheaney) that are making millions off of the wars. That “snatching defeat from the jaws of victory” line is outdated and a misnomer. The Viet Nam reference would be laughable had I not lost so many friends fighting in that stupid war that we never could win(sounds like Iraq doesn’t it). Bush has already started withdrwaing troops from Iraq just as Obama proposed before the success of the questionable success of the surge. Haliburton/Cheaney have clipped about as much of the $600 billion as they could, so they can now retire and count their booty. When, in the last 10 years, has it not been a trying time? Where was this patriotism among the democrats during that time period when Bush was president and the 9-11 attacks, Katrina and a host of other things that were adverse to America occurred? Now we are suddenly supposed to work together and support our president because he is black, a democrat and socialist? I don’t think so. Where can I get a job copying and pasting random bits from other web sites into a blog? Looks like Bookman is running out of ideas already, as the window on mindless partisan bashing of Bush is drawing to a close.

This is the sad state of journalism at the AJC. No wonder it is dying.

The lunatics are at the gates-

THE inspiring and transformative choice by the American people to elect Barack Obama as our 44th president lays the foundation for another fateful choice that he — and we — must make this January to begin an emergency rescue of human civilization from the imminent and rapidly growing threat posed by the climate crisis.al-Gore

It’s getting colder, Sherlock.

New high-voltage, low-loss underground lines can be designed with “smart” features that provide consumers with sophisticated information and easy-to-use tools for conserving electricity, eliminating inefficiency and reducing their energy bills.

Guess what that means, dimwits, the government controls your thermostat.

Isn’t that “nice” of them to take that hassle off your hands?

Getaclue, the only jobs that will create will be government jobs that have to be paid for by people who work and produce tax revenue.

I’m still waiting for the specifics of Bush financial policies that created our current crisis. Surely all you whiners can support your claims, right? Bring the goods.

BTW, getaclue, how is the solar panel install going at the getaclue residence? You are putting you money where you mouth is aren’t you? Leading by example?

You keep saying the patriotic thing to do would be to get behind Obama and his policies. Are you suggesting we treat him the way you’ve treated Bush? Is that the patriotism you want?

Watch the liberals stumble all around now that they have to act like adults:

The reasonable solution is new legislation that would allow the detention of al-Qaeda militants in either the United States or prisons it controls abroad, (instead of Gitmo)-WaPo

Yep, a Gitmo with a new name.

All those alleged Bushie crimes that just aren’t really that bad anymore, now that the election is over.

Suckers.

It seems to me that all the Screamers, Shouters, Ranters, and Ravers are foaming at the mouth. They throw everything including the kitchen sink at the President-Elect and hope something sticks. Not insults nor innuendo are going to change the election results and still they cry like babies. They think that if they holler loud enough a miracle will occur and somehow they’ll be victorious. They all want to be raconteurs and come off like rabbit dogs. I told you they are funny. Keep the laugh lines coming during this very serious time we are in. You make the problems of the entire world seem minuscule. Throw you loser tantrums like the two year old’s you are and I can forget that there are people losing their jobs and homes, health care and benefits, life savings and businesses. Make jokes about chicken bones and watermelons while sailors, soldiers, marines, and airmen lose their live over seas, it’s all a big joke. Lets laugh out loud about the military personnel who are doing their third and fourth tours overseas while their families suffer and break up here at home. What fun, what gaiety for the stay at home orators. What does it all matter if they can insult and belittle the new president as long as it makes them feel better. I hope it make you feel good because if I didn’t laugh at you I would cry.

Since Bush isn’t using thr Oval Office, why not let the president-elect setup shop there?

Seriously, these are unprecedented times. We need the input of both. Two heads are BETTER THAN ONE. WE CAN’T WAIT UNTIL JAN. 20TH TO address the banking and credit crises. It would be prudent of Bush to include Obama in any major decision. Also the auto industry needs help of some kind.

At least energy prices are coming down. But it’s going to take a few months for that to work its way through the system and other prices return to normal. In my shallow mind this eliminates the need for a stimulus package, other than extending unemployment benefits.

pj,

Are you talking about the liberals who have been whining about our president for the past 8 years, slinging every accusation of lying, trampling on the constitution, etc at President Bush? Stabbing our soldiers in the back with claims of air raiding villages, rape, etc. while encouraging our enemy?

You’re right, that is enough to make one want to cry. It should. Especially if you actually love this country.

Could I get a few of you “come together” liberals to tell us specifically what Bush policies led to the financial problems we’re having today?

I Love that Beatles tune so I’ll take a stab.

There is no doubt whatsoever that the Clinton administration repeatedly had Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac lower their standards to “encourage mortgage lending to otherwise uncreditworthy buyers”.

And though the Wall Street rampage and orgy was already well under way, this was the beginning of the “crisis”. A debacle that dwarfs even the S&L/thrift industry bailout.

With “liberal” contributions to both Dems and the GOP by the involved parties as the background, Sen. Chuck Hagel, to his credit, proposed a reform bill in 2005 to address some of the more egregious issues. But the Dems wouldn’t allow it to come to the floor.

But…

these same policies continued under President Bush with the subprime mess being extended even further in 2005 (and planned for further extension in 2008.)

And worse, given ample opportunity, he didn’t criticize ANY sort of lending, frequently boasting that he was presiding over the highest-ever rates of U.S. homeownership. (even though the subprime lending crisis was exploding.)

Certainly you remember the “ownership society” he championed, right? I do.

He just threw gasoline on the fire…

We need to get all the federal taxes off of business, including Social Security and Medicare.

The way I understand it, there will be a net tax reduction, so it shouldn’t slow the economic recovery. That doesn’t mean I agree with it. I think the tax cuts go way too far. We senior citizens are going to have to start paying our “fair share.”

I’d like to see a symbolic gesture of cutting projected spending for FY2009 below $3 trillion. (Not including the buy-ins on Wall Street and Main Street.)

You can always count on Mark Steyn to sum it up brilliantly:

As we’ve seen these last few months, John McCain was so accustomed to running against his party the old dog was incapable of learning the entirely novel trick of running for it. What about the other star names in this year’s primary season: Rudy Giuliani? Well, there’s a pro-life gun-nut. Mitt Romney? Technocrat governor of a deep blue state. Mike Huckabee? Compassionate conservatism on steroids.

In other words, I don’t think the problem these last few years has been “right-wing extremism”.

Amvet, you are correct. He is a part of the overall problem that is government bureaucrats being asleep at the wheel. I belive McCain also attempted to bring oversight to FM/FM unsuccessfully.

I do think it’s interesting who FM/FM chose to give money to. It appears they were much more generous to democrats in congress than republicans, but I don’t suppose those facts are of any interest to the liberals who are hell bent on blaming Bush for the whole fiasco. I also don’t suppose they’re interested in WHY FM/FM gave money to democrats in congress.

But lets all “come together” and ignore the truth in front of our faces and act like the people now responsible for fixing this mess aren’t the same people who created it.

RB from Gwinnett, asleep no, just waking up from an eight year night mare from an administration that lied about the lead up to a war on a people who did not attack us. An administration that said mission accomplished and yet are still fighting the same war. An administration that allowed the abolishment of jurist prudence not just to prisoners of war but all of us in turn. An administration that allowed infiltration of phone calls from service members to their loved ones at home. An administration that blacked balled the lives and careers of any that opposed them. An administration that cost us more than 4000 American lives, countless Iraqi’s lives and more then $10,000,000,000.00 a month. An administration that hired the most incompetent personnel to run some our of most important and sensitive cabinets positions (FEMA, Defense, Justice to name a few). And worst of all, an administration that has allowed the real culprit of 9/11 to stay on the loose and taunt us when ever the feeling strikes him.

pj,

You have been asleep. Here’s a tip for you. You have to actually THINK about the things you read from moveon.org to get the truth.

We are NOT fighting the same “mission accomplished” war we started. We started out removing Saddam and his regime. That mission took a couple of months and that was the mission we accomplished. We’re now fighting the same faction of isamic terrorists who orchestrated 9/11, USS Cole, barracks, embassy’s, etc. Are you capable of telling the difference?

Lying to congress is a felony. Ask the steriod crowd. Please share with us which lies Bush told congress to get us into this war and then explain why congress didn’t treat him lying to them the same way they treated a track star who lied about drug use. Surely lying to get us into a war is more serious.

pj, you have a severe case of BDS that’s preventing you from seeing these issues clearly. Debating with you is pointless because there is no reason in your thought process. If you can provide support for your claims, I’d be glad to debate with you. Short of that, you aren’t worth the time.

RB,

Worse than just being asleep at the wheel, this administration took the federal cops off the beat who once watched these swindlers and crooks on Wall Street and elsewhere a little more closely.

Remember early in the millennium how serious the president said he was about bringing corporate crooks to justice and cleaning up the financial system? (All the while Mssrs. Cheney and Lay were in a closed room somewhere else deciding energy “policy”).

Apparently, what he REALLY meant was to scale back funding for the Security and Exchange Commission’s corporate oversight and policing efforts. Even the SEC Chairman at the time complained and said it would not allow them “to undertake important initiatives.”

You know, he was just being the great spend thrift that history will record him as.

Like his proposal this year to cut pollution control funding by $5.5 billion over the next five years. (Climate change? What climate change?)

Or the one that reduces federal funding for K through secondary education by $10 billion.

Or those that snip out $2.5 billion for community health centers, maternal & child care, etc…

And even the VA (though absolutely NONE of the rest of the DoD’s budget) is not immune from the Hero of the Texas ANG’s spending cuts.

Though VA allocations go up next year, he’s wants to cut them the next four.

Great!

With only tens of thousands of new people needing it, many desperately.

Support the Troops.

You’re not another liberal who thinks it’s a great idea for the government to force other people to do things you wouldn’t spend your own money on are you? Show some leadership, getaclue. Get off the power grid and then you’ll have a pedestal to crow from.

BTW, Our great friends in California have passed some energy legislation that will increase the cost of equipment we sell there by 30% or more. But I’m sure those businesses who will pay that higher tab won’t pass that expense on to consumers in the form of higher prices. They’ll just “do their civic duty” and return less profit to their shareholders. Or get rid of a few employees. Like businesses in California need any more reasons not to do business there….

RB from Gwinnett I’m glad you don’t want to waste your time (that’s what your type always do when the argument gets thick)because you are one of the blind that can’t see the forest for the trees. No matter what you will never disavow this corrupt (morally and ethically) administration. You want to blame Congress, Clinton, Carter and maybe God himself for their short callings. I feel sorry for you and your mind set. If Obama ended these wars peacefully, reversed the deficit, got the economy on tract and made sure their was a job for every able bodied citizen you’d find something else to blame him for. You are a sore loser and a cry baby. Grow up!

I also don’t see Obama fixing the mess with the bailout, finding bin Laden or many of the other things that everyone said Bush couldn’t/woudln’t do. Let’s see Obama do it. For our sake I hope he does but I’m doubtful. I’m most anxious to see about these tax cuts as I am definately not making over $250k. I am skeptical of raising anyone’s taxes in this economy but we will see. I didn’t vote for Obama but I will support him and wait and see what happens. I won’t hesitate to abandon my support for him if he goes far left even though he campaigned in the middle…his prior acts/actions speak from the left and actions do speak louder than words.

The best way to erase the national debt would be to limit welfare to one month. I was never intended to be a way of life. Next end all free health care to illegal immigrants.

Then we need to stop giving aid to every other country when they have a natural or man made disaster. We are BROKE!!! We need to stop helping other countries. They can help themselves from now on.

By RB from Gwinnett

Amvet, the truth of this housing thing is the people who set us up for this did so with good intentions. It’s hard to debate against getting American families to home ownership. Imagine the bloodbath Bush would have faced if he had done ANYTHING to reduce the access poor people had to home loans. He got bashed endlessly for things the left made up. That would have been ugly.

As I’ve said before, the spendthrif issue is why his approval rating is so low. Conservatives are very unhappy about his performance in that area.

An issue nobody seems to talk about is WHY this mortgage collapse happened. Why now? We’ve been giving poorly qualified people home loans for 8 years. Why now? The answer; energy costs. If you look at the impact higher gasoline, electricity, food, heating oil, natural gas, etc. have had on typical families, it ate up what little cushion families on the edge had. The rest of our economy was very strong, but energy costs went nuts. Nothing else was appreciably different from 3-8 years ago.

And still there is nobody doing anything about it. With the reduction in gasoline prices, the issue has gone to the back burner until it happens again and then we’ll pitch fits again and do nothing.

At least getaclue will have a solar home when it happens.
