The president-elect’s press conference

President-elect Obama’s first post-election press conference went well. He set the right tone, deferred to President Bush appropriately and looked and sounded very much like the guy who’s going to be in charge.

He was somber and straightforward about the economy, pressing hard for passage of a stimulus package to soften the recession’s impact on jobs. He came across as confident, composed and competent.

Your mileage may vary.

Does anybody have any thoughts on whether or not to re-adjust mortgages to reflect the diminished values?

Does anyone think this is good? Bad?

Just curious.

I think traditional “stimulus packages” where you send everybody a check is worthless.

But if you could readjust your mortgage to reflect it’s current value would be good for homeowners and force those who created this mess (banks/mortgag companies) bear some of the responsibility. They are getting taxpayer money to cover some of their losses.

I know that would have consequences, everything does, but I would like to know others opinions who know more about this kind of thing than I.

I can hardly wait to hear the Marine Corps Band strike up “Hail To The Chief”. I get chills thinking about it.

In terms of the press conference I hope the auto industry gets the help it needs. As he stated they are the back bone of industry. More than their employees depend on them because businesses that work around them make up a big part of the economic food chain. If they are saved and pay back the LOANS than we may see the rest of of us recover.

A very even toned and measured press conference it was. His intelligence amazes and reassures me.

Sounds good Bosch.

I think bailing them out should come with accountability to those failed mortgages.

Mortgage adjustments and forcing banks to invest and make loans in green energy to create jobs.

Bail out auto and force them to make green energy cars and create jobs.

States too on green energy to produce jobs.

Use the bailout, to force them to start a new green job bubble. Leverage.

Go ahead and have your fun insulting President George W. Bush while history gives him the last laugh. George W. Bush will go down as one of the best Presidents in history because of his committment to spreading freedom and democracy around the globe to places like Afghanistan and Iraq and promoting the continued Westernization of other places like the Eastern European Soviet Bloc Countries (like Ukraine, etc.). President Bush-43 will also be recognized as one of the great ones because of his firm committment to defeating Islamofacism and winning the War on Terror! On the other hand, just how much of a commitment can the Democrat left have to defeating Islamofacists when they just elected one, frauduently, as shadow figurehead President? The American People all know whose really pulling the strings and calling the shots behind the leftist puppet Obama: George Soros, Oprblah Winfrey, Ellen DeGenerate and the pro-gay lobby, moveon.org, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, the NAACP, the Black Panthers, Osama Bin Laden and the anti-Israel/anti-Jew/Islamofacist terror movement and last, but not least, William Ayres and the Weather Underground just to name a few!

Yeah, now that’s a real commitment to defeating Islamofacism and keeping this country safe…..

getalife, you can install solar panels on your home TODAY and get yourself off the electric grid completely. Until you’re willing to put up YOUR money for what YOU feel everybody must do, please spare us the theatrics. Talk’s cheap.

BTW, I looked into it 4 years ago. It would cost $80K for my house and would take 33 years to pay it back. I just don’t seem to have a spare $80K to drop on that lying around anywhere.

I’m sure you’ll give a few people some work to do when you order your system, so don’t delay. Start putting your money where your mouth is today. You don’t need Obama to do anything for you to make it happen. Let us all know how it’s going, too. We’ll look forward to your updates.

Bosch, I do not have a mortgage; however, know some who will be struggling to pay their taxes next year, because the acreage or house is appraised for much more than the house or acreage would bring at the present market value!!!

And noooooo, they have not borrowed against the equity etc. etc. The problem is simply tax increase, property devaluation due to the recession; can’t sell property due to the housing market….Taxes are STILL due based on couple years ago’s appraisal of property, which is a laugh based on present market value.

A very different “Presidential Press Conference.” A friendly even congratulatory press. Not one unfriendly attitude, no confrontational follow ups. Every one there on the same team.

Do I recall correctly? Oh yes. That was one of my complaints during the campaign. The press and the Democrat candidate were openly playing for the same team.

Morningstar,

The reason that made me start thinking about all this is that I recently re-financed my house - I forget exactly, but it must have been a little over a year ago, and I remember the appraiser telling me that he could appraise it higher if I wanted him too so I could borrow more money. Seriously, he did. I was like, um, no that’s okay. To be honest, I really didn’t think about the implications of that at the time.

It sounds like an idea with alot of merit. It would release a number of pressure points in the economy, —increase the affordability of mortgages, which in turn would add to homeowners buying and investing power. Plus would spread the pain between homeowners and lending institutions.

Question is -does it apply to everyone or just those in trouble?

I think it would need to apply to everyone, because it’s the foreclosed homes in neighborhoods that are forcing prices to go down, or one of the reasons anyway.

The individual, who for whatever reason, placed themselves in such economic straits should have to experience what others in the past have had to deal with and stop moaning and begging. One should be responsible! I know from experience that I learned the most and have not made the same mistake twice when forced to experience discomfort from errors I have committed. However, far too many people expect Primrose Lane throughout life and if you do not have the requisite skills and abilities for the pain free life then everything should be provided for you at someone elses expense. Lowering everyones property values will only result in a millage rate increase that will result in their tax bill being the same. When a governing body has a certain amount of money to raise they apply a mill rate to the total value of all taxable property to get that amount of money. If you lower the tax base by 50%, you will see a millage increase of 100%. They still have to raise the same amount of money to operate. Therefore your bill is the same as it was.

As for who got here first and who did not you make my point. Everyone came here as an immigrant. If you believe in God and the Bible than this entire planet belonged to one couple. We need laws and borders to protect ourselves but this country is a melting pot and all who come legally are welcomed. We need to be careful because depending on your nation of origin or even religion and who beat who here many immigrants were unwelcome to these shores. The Irish, the Italians, the Jews, the Germans, the Polish to name a few have all been told to go back where they came from and the people descendant from Slaves have, until recently, been told to go back to Africa almost daily (and they had no choice in the matter even if they were lucky enough to know what country they were stolen from). Obama in his first press conference avoided questions from Fox News. One can only deduce from that that he is going to pander to the media outlets (99% of them) that supported him during the campaign. The question must be raised; if he can’t take critical questions from the press (not that most of them don’t support him anyway) then how are the American people supposed to know what he is really doing? How much different will we be from Nazi Germany and the former Soviet Union if he and his adoring media outlets such as CNN, MSNBC and the New York Times continue to work in collusion? These outlets have become propagandists for him. All of the “intellectuals” in the media that supported him are supposed to support freedom of the press. Exactly how free has this press (including Bookman and the AJC) been in this election? They under-reported the negatives about Obama and overstated the positives. Be afraid American. Be very afraid. This president has no constraints. He has the Congress and he has the press just like Hitler and Stalin. If he does well, I will be elated. If he does badly, then how are we supposed to know other than we have all become goverment dependent drones who take our daily porridge and question nothing.

Laugh Now, I was trying to give them the benefit of the doubt (not that they deserve it). I just find it ironic that people such as Bookman and others in the “news” business sit around and talk about such things as personal freedom and freedom of the press at their cocktail parties and in reality they are doing everything they can to destroy those ideals. Whether it is intentional or not, who can tell. The press (most of them) are as easily led as sheep are to slaughter. Journalism must be going the way of every other major college degree in this country. It’s not what you know or believe, it is how much you can pay for a diploma. Bookman, the AJC and the rest of the “news outlets” are useless. They will not tell the truth. That places the average American in real danger. Americans should view everything they see and hear from papers and television with real skepticism. Bookmeat doesn’t matter as he is a little biased man in a little failing paper.

By Ima Stock Dummy November 7, 2008 5:23 PM Several here have posted about how dumb most “investors” are in times like these. They panic and sell, then buy back higher later, and wonder why they can’t make money.

When I was sure that Oblahma had a chance to win the presidency, I sold every damn thing I had.

Since then, the market has lost roughly 30% of it’s value but yet I still have my money.

Now it is a matter of waiting for the Oblahma depression to break, which I’m guessing will be about 4 and half years from now, 3 months into Sarah Palin’s first term as president.

Then I buy cheap.

You libs think I’m joking, but I’m not. During the next four years, America could hit rock bottom, after all, we are well on our way, and even be eclipsed as the world’s economic super power by some basket case like China.

When that happens, the American people will not even remember who Bush was. But yet, they will still be angry.

It’s gonna really suck for you liberals.

Sorry, getalife, but, per Jay, I respectfully disagree with you. Raising taxes is just not the most effective way to increase government revenues. If more money is needed, or wanted, to run the government, why not consider what some other nations, like Ireland, have done and lower the corporate tax rates down to 15% or lower and phasing out income taxes. Lowering the corporate tax rate and eliminating the income gets to the same point that Pres-elect Obama was getting at, making rich people pay their fair share, but does so through freeing up personal wealth for investment here at home (domestically), and not abroad (offshoring and outsourcing). Increasing taxes on your biggest investors only serves to act as a form of perceived extortion to those wealthy investors and encourages them to hide their money away from the government by putting most of their money in foreign bank accounts and offshore investments i.e. overseas jobs and factories where they’ll pay a much smaller amount in taxes. “Rich” people will never pay their “fair share” of increased taxes because being “rich” gives them the means and the resources to hide it away from a government trying to extort it away from them in the form of higher taxes. Why not lower ALL taxes from 35% down to 15% and encourage the “rich” to invest the difference in America? Not only will we see increased investment from American Citizens, but also from international investors, i.e. foreign individuals who will bring more money than we can count (tens-of-trillions more) and lots of HIGH-PAYING JOBS of all sorts from manufacturing to telecom to tech to life sciences back to our shores in droves. Heck, even that bastion of East Coast liberalism, Massachusetts, is phasing out income taxes over the next few years because they have figured out that governments actually bring in more tax money when citizens are able to keep more of their money to spend and invest! You can more flies with honey than you can vinegar, of course, manure is basically honey, to flies, so go figure! Here’s a little secret: if Obama and the lefties ever figure this out, he’ll be one of the most popular presidents, ever.

I think the personal attacks on Mr. Bookman are juvenile. I read his column and seldom aggree with him, but he’s consitent and I would hope, open to new and better ideas.

This whole deal is simple. If the economy really works better when you redistibute the wealth and the system works as he says, “from the bottom up”, then in four years he will have fixed everything and will truly be popular.

If, on the other hand, he kills the economy and loses more jobs, then Bookman and the rest of the press will only be able to defend him for a short time before they give in to a business minded individual to fix everything. That’s my bet>

To Corporal: I did the link and was unimpressed. China has over a Billion people we need to keep up. It sounds like to me that there is a lot of fear mongering going on. Fear that this country is turning more Brown, Yellow and Black. If this is a problem maybe we need to give out birth control for free to every child rearing woman who wants them. Maybe we need to teach sex education in schools. Maybe any woman who doesn’t want to have a baby shouldn’t be crucified. Every way to keep the population down medically and educationally conservatives stand in the way of. Maybe we should cut back on the amount of immigrants allowed in but the bigger numbers are allowed from European nations. BTW several dozen newly sworn in American citizens this week had it done while on duty in Iraq.

As an afterthought I just heard that Chenny is having another medical procedure this weekend preformed at Andrews Air force Base Hospital. If that health care is good enough for him then it should be good enough for all Americans after all we’re paying for it and his salary.

Bookman,

You make it sound like Bush joked around when he spoke about serious issues.
It is good to know that Barry was confident, composed and competent. I should note that he looks good in a suit and has a nice smile. Good presidential presentation being so much more important than that of substance. I will sleep better at night knowing the messiah is coming and utopia will arrive in January. I truly hope that the country improves in the next four years, but you libs think he is a god. Makes me sick how you fawn all over Barry. Will you tear him up in the media when he and his lib friends start removing the constitutional rights of those that don’t see eye to eye with the lib ideology. Because if somehow they turn the economy around, then they can go into full pursuit of the lib social agenda.

A nation that cannot control its borders will cease to be a nation. It’s that simple.

Everyone in this country has access to emergency health care. It’s the law. Hospitals are not allowed to turn you away.

You show me anyone else who says they can’t afford a basic policy and I’ll take away their big screen color t.v., cigarettes, booze, $200 tennis shoes, $800 hub caps, etc., etc., etc. and they will be able to pay for a policy

Talk about welfare and hand outs, he takes the cake (and eats it too). You guys always take up for the status quo. Liar liar pants on fire. Obama was rambling and incoherent, obviously exhausted from the presidential race but still inexcusable. He should have rested rather than going to the gym and shoot hoops. Also, the presidential duties will be much more grueling than the campaign was. Take a look at how youthful and vigorous Bill Clinton and George W. Bush were when they entered office and how wrinkled, beaten down, and haggard they were when they left and you will see the point. Bill Clinton in particular, does he even have any GRAY hairs left? Let alone black or brown or blond or what color they used to be … the guy’s hair is WHITE! So if Obama can’t handle the stress and fatigue now, the next 4 years are going to be rough.

Oh yeah, and don’t let me forget how he callously trashed Nancy Reagan. It was 100% true, of course, but you NEVER say such things in public, and not only did he do it, but he was so cavalier about it … it was actually a malevolently evil moment. Seriously, it was, and this comes from a person that despises the Reagans.

Bookman, you already lost all credibility when you called yourself a moderate and endorsed Roy Barnes’ multimember district redistricting sham (wasn’t illegal but should have been!), so now you are just making yourself a caricature and showing yourself to be fundamentally dishonest. How do you people look at yourselves in the mirror? The whole lot of you is really no better than George W. Bush, just a bunch of craven sick liars.

Thinking like yours is what led to the soon to be $11 trillion national debt.

In 1983 federal revenue was down, partly because of reduced tax rates, and the deficit gap wasn’t closed until Clinton raised taxes AND cut spending.

Revenue was down below the Y2K level in 2001-2003 and the deficit gap will never be closed unless spending is drastically cut, which will also reduce revenue, or taxes are raised.

Freezing spending would also work over time barring a recession, but it looks like we might be entering a long one now.

Certainly lowering tax rates contributes towards growing the economy, but in the meantime you operate with huge deficits that result in tremendous debt.
