History was made, and they were part of it

As I was walking into the AJC building this morning, I saw people coming out the doors clutching several copies of this morning’s newspaper, with its banner headline “Historic win.”

The big surprise was inside the lobby, where people were lined up along the walls like voters at a polling place, waiting their turn for souvenirs of the occasion. Apparently the morning edition has been sold out all over the metro region as people rush to get a tangible reminder of an event they can tell their grandchildren about.

And the cool thing is, their grandchildren will probably wonder what the big fuss was about.

**”This election had many firsts and many stories that will be told for generations. But one thats on my mind tonight is about a woman who cast her ballot in Atlanta. Shes a lot like the millions of others who stood in line to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing - Ann Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.

She was born just a generation past slavery; a time when there were no cars on the road or planes in the sky; when someone like her couldnt vote for two reasons - because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin.

And tonight, I think about all that shes seen throughout her century in America - the heartache and the hope; the struggle and the progress; the times we were told that we cant, and the people who pressed on with that American creed: Yes we can.”** ~ President-elect Barack Obama, Nov. 4 ‘08

Wrong as usual, Andy. The implication—indeed, the accomplishment—is that America has finally gotten OVER the issue of color to actually elect the better candidate.

And it only took a failed war, trampled Constitution, wrecked economy, devastated international standing, and several trillion dollars to do it.

I guess this is above the pay grade of you liberals, so allow me to explain this in a little more detail.

A McCain victory yesterday would have consigned the Republican party to a minority status for decades to come and probably would have turned it over to the moderates forever.

McCain would not have gotten anything of substance passed into legislation and democrats would have whined and moaned about Republican obstruction 24/7 the whole entire time.

Now, not only can we seize the party back from the spineless moderates, the same moderates who have approval ratings of 22%, we can sit back and watch you screw everything up, incurring the wrath of the American people.

Did you really believe you are going to be able to keep all of your promises?

AJC Management,

That is not a factual statement about America electing a president based on his skin. It discounts the other messages that you offer that have insight and purpose. Race was a factor in deciding who won the election but there were people of both sides voting based on race. Some were for a black president others voted against him only because he was black.

Anyone who voted in that manor I have never, and will never have respect for them and their opinion.

The reason Obama won was because he ran a better campaign. Simple.

The fault of the republicans was that they never understood this was an election of non-typical voters. Meaning that typical strategies were not going to work. Our leaders of the republican party let us down.

The republican party focused on unworkable battles. While never giving a clear representation of how they differed from the Bush administration. There are many differences, that many on here used to mention before he ran for president, but they chose to excite the base without regard for the middle right voter. That is who was pushed into becoming middle left.

Make no mistake this election was not about race, or taxes, or any of that mess. It was not even an election to elect Pres. elect Obama, it was an election to vote against anything Bush or even close.

That is what the republicans should have realised. Had they then possibly they could have won, but I doubt it.

Fundamental Christians are the Western equivalent of Muslim extremists/terrorists. These are the people that blew up the abortion clinics in the 90’s and the Federal Office Building in Oklahoma City.

I say we take all the fundamentanutties to a desert in the Middle East (better to fight them over there than to have to to fight them over here) and gather up all the Muslim extremists/terrorists and let them have at each other. We will take the last man standing, put him in a straight jacket, and throw away the key.

And now that the speeches are over, we’ll see the reality in the proposals. And if Pres Obama (I’m trying real hard not to laugh) can convince his own Party leadership (Spkr Pelosi, Sen Reid) that ‘change’ and ‘bipartisanship’ is a worthy goal.

For those of you who think Obama won because he carried the black vote, partially true except he won amond white men and women as well.

The reality is that Obama ran on issues that are presently causing problems in this country and McCain ran on a past war record with clearly no idea of how the previous 4 elections (5 if you include this one) were won by the guy with less military background.

Obama targeted young voters who proceeded to show up in masses to support him. McCain catered to the hard core evangelical right which has been the down fall of the GOP since Terry Schivo and scares off moderates and other religons (think jewish population in Florida).

Another interesting thing. Historically when one party makes major gains in congress, two years later the other party pulls some seats back. Think in 1996 when Dems gained some seats after the GOP throttled them in 94. In the last two years, the Dems demolished the GOP in the ‘06 race and then took more in ‘08. This is either a reflection of a changing electorate or the inablility of the GOP to adjust to it.

Uh, Management, sorry to interrupt your wake, but let me point something out for you.

I know that with W. F. Buckley gone conservatism isn’t much for subtlety of thought or - God forbid - paradox anymore. But let me suggest the following RE: America elected a man because of his color, that’s the implication of this comment thread.:

As for WHY Barack Obama was elected, that’s debatable and there were no doubt a multitude of factors. But as for the triumph of his being elected, one major factor of that is race — but not the way the Limbaugh crowd wants you to think (because as we know that crowd is the sworn enemy of all subtlety and paradox, or ‘nuance’ for those keeping score at home).

The glorious paradox of Obama’s election is that a black man was elected who happened to be black as Colin Powell put it. In other words, the relevance of Obama’s race is that his race is no longer vitally relevant.

Now, where do I score on your nuance scale, dittoheads?

America is not necessarily known for its celebration of nuance, but when it does do nuance the results are positively glorious .

By tcoach

I do not agree with Obama’s principle’s but to deny that this is a monumental civil moment in history. I am not one who thinks his policies will work but many do and they seem to be entranced by him. This should be viewed as a good thing, not because of policy but because of precedent. There is no longer an excuse or maybe even a plausible reason as to why anyone cannot make it. This has been proven that America as a whole is not racist. If the country could elect a non-white male into the highest office in the land then there can be no more overwhelming white bias.

No longer can people say they are not succeeding because of the color of their skin. This could be a time were America realizes that the dream and hope has never went away. Anything is possible to be achieved by anyone. From now on one’s success is their own doing. I hope we have heard for the last time that this happened or did not happen because I am black, or because I am Latino. Never again because all have seen now that is nothing more than a crutch and excuse in today’s society.

This is not to say racism does not still thrive here. It does, it is on all sides. Blacks against whites, Asians against blacks, whites against anything not white. But it has been proven on the 4th of Nov. 2008 that no longer can it be claimed one is unsuccessful, or successful because of the color of their skin. Because if someone that is supposed to be discriminated against can make it to President then what is your excuse.

Everything should be viewed at face value now, and there should be equal actions taken against those that discriminate against any race, not just non-white races.

I hope I have not, but am sure I have, offended anyone but this is my observation.

You miss my point, t.

Comment threads such as this one^^ demean the abilities of Oblahma and put his election into the mundane category of grievance fulfillment, which is fine by me.

75% of this country never owned slaves and fought vehemently against the expansion of the slave trade. Same thing with racial bias, i.e. Jim Crow laws. And the people that did liberate the blacks from slavery were the Republicans, the very party was formed for that sole purpose.

The democrats have conjured up this narrative that America as a whole is evil and racist, mainly to cover the sins of their past.

And they taught that to our children in the public education system, see voting results, age group 18-24.

Whether you like it or not, white guilt played a large part of yesterday’s developments.

Good for the democrats, they fooled us again.

Now, for the big overriding concern, why, I ask, do I, my party and my country get labeled as racist and evil when we had nothing to do with the crimes of the democrat party and actually helped the blacks escape injustice?

Do tell us, we’d love to hear.

Without getting into a philosophical discourse here on the difference between part and whole or a sociological one about the nature of institutions, I would just point out that the Left has never necessarily said that ‘America as a whole is racist and evil’ and whenever someone does, that person should be corrected. What they have said is that *in its history if not necessarily now (and even less so after last night) its institutions have been tainted by residual racism and that there remains work to do to correct the damage done by that residual racism. In other words, just as when an organism has been poisoned. that poison will affect the entire organism until it is removed, but that doesn’t mean that the organism itself has become poisonous.

AJC you are speaking to the choir about past acts.

I am not far removed from the 18-24 crowd, I am only 27. I also voted for McCain. I just think attributing his sucess only to race is inaccurate.

Obama gaining the nomination and defeating Hilliary I do say was heavily influenced by white guilt. As far as the general election, I feel it was more of a ball dropped by our party than it was anything else.

I completly agree though as I am consistantly attacked for sticking up for white people on here. Was blasted a few days ago for saying white men are the most discriminated against.

My ancestors did not come to this country until 1858. None of my family ever had any slaves. I am unaware of any formwer clan members as well. Matter of fact, my grandfather was a mayor of a small town in georgia, it is not a small town any longer. While mayor he lost an election because my grandfather believed in integration of the schools.

So I completly understand, and I do not understand why future generations are held responsible for past actions. It almost at times seems as if people intentionally look for things people say and how they may be deemed racist.

Hope you see my point now that I was only trying to state that the result of the election is musch more of a result of the republican parties failures than of the immoral actions of some, or many depending on your view.

Citizen I have to disagree that it was about welfare for poor or welfare for corporate types. Because both candidates supported welfare for corporate America, i.e. the bailout. Only one candidate was for welfare of teh poor. Which is why I feel it was more about Bush and that many never gave McCain a chance of gaining their vote, because he was a republican.

When people heard he was rep. they immediatly tuned him out and went to the other candidate, regardless of who that was.

While if what you sy is true then you are saying that people voted to give themselves money, as stated above both were for corporate welfare. I really hope people would not vote for president based on how much money he was going to promise them. That is not what I hope this country stands for, nor do I believe it is what it stands for.

That is an interesting point if what you say is the cause it is sad that an election was in essence bribed away.

Lincoln’s dream of equality for all?

“Free them, and make them politically and socially our equals? My own feelings will not admit of this … we cannot then, make them equals.” (Lincoln’s first reply to Stephen Douglas, first debate, 4/21/1858.

He helped free black people as slaves but like most learned people of his day (i.e., Darwin) he didn’t not believe they were genetically or socially equals. Therefore, by today’s definition Lincoln was a racist.

Morning, all:

Three flutes of champagne last night: 1) To our red-white-and-blue selves, 2) To the end of this election cycle, and 3) To the awesome fact that we will transition power in January without one drop of bloodshed.

Today I raise the coffee cup (and aspirin bottle) to: 1) President-elect Obama, 2) McCain for the classy concession speech (jeers to his mouthy, vile supporters, however), and 3) once again, our American selves.

My wish is that we align our thoughts with a sense of the Divine, and live in ways so that others may find inspiration and hope.

From BO’s speech last night: “…the true strength of our nation comes not from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracey, liberty, opportunity and unyielding hope.”

Bravo, and cheers.

Corporal, Fanatics are fanatics; their means are the same. The frequency of action is beside the point when the purpose of action is the same.

They both harbor fear and hatred of anyone/anything that does not agree with their own beliefs. Occassionaly going off the handle is no better than more frequently going off the handle.

And I don’t include anyong in Iraq who has fought us for taking over their country. If a country came into the USA and took it over, I would be fighting them tooth and nail, house by house, street by street. Goldie please don’t get all riled up.

I said they were discriminated against and I can provide examples of a completly distorted system were it is socially acceptable for one race to say something while it is completly outlandish if a comprable or even the exact same thing is said by one race.

Have you looked at what is socially acceptable.

Don Imus, who I think is an idiot, was fired for saying the nappy.. trash that he spit out. That is fine I agree he is a bigot.

But then why is Lil’ Wayne allowed to say the word “cracker” 11 times in one of his songs. That same song is played many of times a day on the radio, yet you have not seen the first protest.

Also how many schools list themselves as Historically White Colleges? Watch on t.v. soon you will see advertisments for a game to be played between HBC’s it is even called the HBC classic. How is that equality.

Better yet if you know anyone who is in the coaching industry ask them if racial discrimination exist. Try to see how hard it is to get hired as a white assistant coach. Many of my friends are in college coaching and it is even talked about. One of them even had a coach to tell him “well we really need to hire a black coach right now”

So why should I be attacked for saying white men are discriminated against.

Equal means Equal. Or is that not what you want.

Financial advise from the senior writer of Money Magazine…, before the impending Obamadoom.

“Now that Barack Obama has won the White House, consider selling any winning stocks. The President-elect has said he intends to raise the capital-gains tax rate from 15% to 20%, and he will get pressured to lower that income threshold of $250,000. While ther is racism in the world and our country I feel people use the phrase too lightly. One day it is going to be like the boy who cried wolf. There are those who would use race as a tool to gain or overthrow political and social power. However to attribute racism as to the cause anytime a white person does not agree or says something bad about a black person is losing its shine. Lord and Bosch, never said I was advocating for your rights.
I am also doing fine. I have a secure job and am free can’t ask for more.

Lord you said true discrimination. And went as far as to type true in all caps. Then is this true discrimination.

One of the groomsmen from my wedding was interviewing for a head assistant coaching position. He had a sucsessful playing career as a collegiate and as a pro in europe. He then coached at a div. II school. That school went to the national tournament 3 straight years and was ranked top 5 all year, all of these his recruits.

Then as he is applying for a job at a div. I level College he is told during the interview, you are more than qualified but, we really need to hire a black coach right now. That school did hire a black coach, one who had 3 years less coaching experience than my friend. Also the guy who got the job had no college playing experience much less professional. Oh yeah and the man who recieved the job his team had a sub .500 season the year before.

So in what way is that not discrimination?

Bosch, you wrote this “Dude, life not being fair sometimes is not discrimination.”

But now if I say this to someone not white then I am accused of either being insensative or a racist. Why?

Do you offer this up everytime a person claims racism or only because I am white do you say this to me?

Then name one lord and do not question my honesty never have lied to you, have no reason. I do not question yours because I have no information to the contrary. But it did happen, just this past spring and it was a school in conference USA. Which that is ironic just thought of that.

So I have not seen an actual 1st hand account of when this has happened with details of a source you know.

Are you saying it does not matter as well since according to you it happens at a 1000 to 1 ratio then that means it is irrelevant. I could give you at least 8 more incidences were this has happened but I do not know for a fact that it indeed happened as I was told.

But I guarantee that I was not speaking up for you. I was speaking up against the consist and unfounded claims of racism made everyday on this blog and all over our media outlets.

Just look at how quick bosch was to tell me it is not discrimination it is life and sometimes it ain’t fair. How many times do you think she has said that to a black person claiming racism.

That is what I mean when I speak of discrimination. That there is a set of socially unacceptable things that white people cannot say, while the society does not hold other races accountable as they do white men. Show me info were that is not true.

How many comics make fun of and ridicule white people, while the comic is not white.
