The Obama effect on Ga. turnout
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Pollster.com’s Brian Shaffner does a brief analysis of Georgia’s possible impact on tonight’s outcome, and comes up with a rather startling number:
“In 2004, 834,331 African Americans voted in Georgia’s presidential election. Already this year, 705,203 African Americans have voted early in that state.”
According to Shaffner, if the black vote in Georgia comprises 30 percent of today’s turnout, “there is a reasonable chance that Obama can win Georgia and that a landslide may be in the offing. To do this, he needs to perform slightly better among whites than Kerry did. According to exit polls, Kerry won just 23 percent of the white vote in 2004; Obama would need 27-30 percent of the white vote to capitalize on the high turnout among blacks (or he would need Bob Barr to peel away a significant share of McCain’s support). This is still a bit of a long shot, but Georgia has one of the first poll closings, so it will give us something to look for during the 7pm-8pm hour.”
It’s been a long time since Georgia got much attention in a presidential race. And if our Senate race ends up in a runoff, we’re gonna get more attention than we ever wanted between now and December.

That is a sad statement….it insinuates that the Black population could care less about who runs the country unless they are black….funny how they complain about the “charachter of a person as opposed to the color of their skin”…how do they expect to be treated that way when they don’t even believe it themselves…I think they, like the Katrina-hanger-ons…see dollar signs.

So it seems your thought is that all black vote goes to Obama. Why isn’t that just a little racial Mr. Liberal? Racial in that a) you think it and b) that a black person would vote for someone based solely on the color of their skin. Alot of women are voting today, how come you don’t think they are voting for Palin?

Of course, this is all dependent on black voters voting for Obama. While that may very well be true for some, even a majority, I still have problems categorizing and predicting the actions of people based solely on the color of their skin.
Everyone has free will and a mind of their own. How they choose to exercise them is up to the individual.
But then again, I hated that damn sadistics class in college. :)

Jay, perhaps you can help clear some of my confusion on your posting.
A few weeks ago you were stating that blacks were voting for Obama because he’s a Democrat, and that it was (of course) racist to insinuate that blacks may be voting for him due to skin color.
Now, in true liberal hypocritical fashion, you seem to be stating the same thing that you had deemed so despicable just a few weeks ago.
I look forward to you clearing this up.

I don’t know, Jim. The Mormons who got all excited by Romney’s candidacy — were they religious bigots by your definition?
The Jews who got excited when Lieberman was named to run with Gore — were they religious bigots too?
How about the Greeks who rushed to back Mike Dukakis? Or the Indian-Americans thrilled at Bobby Jindal’s success? Are they ethnic bigots?
How about those Georgians who donated to and backed Jimmy Carter, because they were proud to have a Ga. peanut farmer running? Were they biased or prejudiced in some way?
You bring up Palin. The McCain camp was very much out front in admitting that she was selected in part to draw women to the campaign, particularly after Hillary lost. Were those women voters anti-male?

I believe the Obama factor for its merit is not the color line everyone claims. I think America wants a change from the path we have gone through for the last eight years. War and trillion dollar quarter profits from oil compays. CEO of investement banks making 480 mil in 8 years and run company in ground. Free to due so from deregulation. McCain with his Keating Five and Palin with her Troopergate shows they would be more of the mess we alreay have. Obama and Biden show to be just people of integrity and no bad baggage of government abuse. Obama could have been a green martian for all I care if he was the right man for the job.

I am a white woman who voted for Obama b/c of his policies, as did every black in line around me, not simply because he was black. To insinuate that blacks would only vote for him because of the color of his skin is completely ridiculous and undermines the fairness in both the political system and the public perception so many — both black and white — have worked towards for so long. Also, commenter Bill, you should quit repeating McCain/Palin/Fox News rhetoric and actually bone up on Obama’s economic policy so you understand the ridiculousness of your comment.

How often do Black people ever look past color unless it puts money in their pocket? A white voter will go to the polls and vote for a black person long before most black voters will even go to the polls to vote for any person. What we learned from this elections is that white voters on both sides that didn’t want another Clinton voted for Obama to push Hillary out of the race KNOWING Obama does not have the skills to run this country. Well, we could have beat Hillary probably as it turns out, but the STUPID effect was overlooked. Man on the street polls and interviews have proven many Obama voters don’t know anything about him or what he is for other than that he is Black in color. All these people BI**H about the 700 bil. bailout but have no problem with Obama getting how much to try and buy an election. Now, that is rich!

Where did anyone see anything in what Jay wrote that says all the black vote will go to Obama? Or that all the white vote will go to McCain? Pollsters and political scientists are smart enough to know that not all the vote from one class of voters — whether it’s black/white, young/old, city/rural, whatever — will go to a particular candidate. But they can estimate that a certain percentage of it will. The numbers Jay cited assume that percentages break a certain way, not that everyone in the class votes monolithically.

Let me state what many of the ignorant bloggers have overlooked throughout this election …Obama is half white! He wasn’t even raised by his black family, barely even knows them! This is what gets under my skin. Black people are excited to see a man that although bi-racial, is going to be the next president! In this country, it is Whites that made race an issue. And while we’ve come a long way, let me be frank. If Obama was the product of two black parents with dark skin, he wouldn’t have gotten this far. That’s reality.
Now, I’m proud of him. And yes, as a bi-racial person, I’m excited to see him get this far.
For the idiots, check your history. Blacks have always voted democrat. Maybe more voted this time because they were excited about Obama like many white people were. My white family supports Obama as does my black family. Stop spreading hatred!

Welcome to the real world, where you don’t always get an advantage in life. And what difference does it make anyway? Sonny doesn’t do very much unless it involves fishing! He’s living high off the hog because he’s a republican in a republican state not because he’s done anything to make Georgia better.
Oh and when Georgia does turn BLUE tonight, you’ll have plenty of clout in Washington so don’t sweat it!
A white voter will go to the polls and vote for a black person long before most black voters will even go to the polls to vote for any person.
What an ignorant statement considering many blacks do vote on a regular basis.
And uhh, how would you ever know the answer to your own question since a black person has never gotten this far in a presidential election before? Jesse Jackson’s run years ago was a farce & even black folks didn’t believe he could win.
For the record I am one black person who did vote for Hilary Clinton initially because I was unsure about Barak Obama. Although I like things about McCain I feel he’ll just bring more of the same Bush tactics into office with him and that is the very last thing we need.

For the life of me, I cannot understand the Republican mentality.
Of course, they have in their own minds swept four hundred years of racial brutality and murderous oppression under the carpet. And they are dismayed that every one else, black AND white, won’t do so.
Their reasons for doing so are disingenuous and pathetically shallow. And their denials on this topic parallel the ones on so many others.
And so, they still refuse to see the reality of race in America - that the wounds are both long lasting and still near the surface.
For the first time in our lives, a non white man is in position to run the free world. In some ways, the magnitude of this cannot be overstated.
For virtually all Americans of color to vote for him, is in this instance, I believe completely forgivable. Even though I believe he is the wrong man of color to wear this mantle. But even then, I hope I am wrong.
And if four hundred years down the road, Americans of color are still as color obsessed as we whites have been and still are, then shame on them.
But in the meantime, the crackers, bigots and racists need to drink a VERY large cup of stfu.

It always surprises me at what some white people will say and do to maintain power. Blacks have voted for less qualified white men forever and no one said anything. The excuse has always been a shortage of qualifications when it comes to blacks. Now we have a black man with a degree from Harvard Law and some of the insecure yahoos question his qualifications after enduring 8 years of George Bush.
Scare adds are all over TV including an alleged black panther intimidation in Philly. As Chris Rock says, you cannot win a fight with a white man by decision. You have to knock him out. If the election is close, McCain will win by a decision with law suits galore in Ohio,Virginia and Florida. I hear that the republicans have already filed a suit in New Hampshire. McCain must be losing there. Obama must win by at least 100,000 votes in each state to ensure the knockout.

TO ALL MY FRIENDS…LIBERAL OR CONSERVATIVE…FYI only.
George Bush has been in office for 7 1/2 years. The first six the economy was fine. A little over one year ago: 1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high 2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon 3) The unemployment rate was 4.5% 4) The DOW JONES hit a record high— 14,000 + 5) American’s were buying new cars, taking Cruises, vacations overseas, living large!
But American’s wanted ‘CHANGE’! So, in 2006 they voted in a Democratic Congress and yes—we got ‘CHANGE’ all right.
In the PAST YEAR: 1) Consumer confidence has plummeted 2) Gasoline is now over $4 a gallon And climbing! 3) Unemployment is up to 5.5% (a 10% increase) 4) Americans have seen their home equity Drop by $12 TRILLION DOLLARS And prices are still dropping 5) 1% of American homes are in foreclosure 6) as I write…..

Washington’s Prayer for the Nation
(CERTAINLY APPLICABLE AS WE AWAIT RETURNS)
Almighty God, we make our earnest prayer that Thou will keep the United States in thy holy protection, that Thou will incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government, and entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow citizens of the United States at large.
And finally that Thou will most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without an humble imitation of whose example in these things, we can never hope to be a happy nation.
Grant our supplications, we beseech Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

lets face it….99% of the blacks voting for Obama are doing so “‘cause he black”. Ask them questions about his positions, and they cant answer….about his background….they can’t answer. But by golly theyre voting for him. ” cuz he black”. Wake up and smell the coffee!! We’re ALL going to pay if he’s elected….sadly a “TOLD YOU SO” aint worth much when we’re stuck for 4 years.
Obviously, you are talking to the wrong black people. All of the black folks I know can easily and readily defend their presidential candidate choice, which is BARAK OBAMA!! Not because he’s black but because he ran a better campaign and his solutions to our biggest problems came across much better than McCain’s did.
By the way, I felt the same way you do right now, four LONG years ago when George Bush was reelected. Happy days are here again!

Obama is not Black or African-American; his father is an Arab and his mother is Caucasian-American. Obama has listed his religion as Muslim/Islam at least twice on school/public records. And it looks like we did…
Kudos to my fellow decent Americans, especially those of us in the blogosphere. Our long national nightmare is (almost) over.
We’ve overcome not only the fear-mongering, the hate-mongering, the superstition, and stupidity of Bush and his minions, we’ve overcome the incompetence, cowardice, and censorship of and by the so-called “mainstream media”.
We stood up to them and did their job for them, when they refused to do it. We brought this government down and pointed out the buffoonery and idiocy of their supporters - not them. They sucked up and pandered - not us.
Congratulations.
Keep going though.
The election of Senator Obama as the 44th President of the United States of America will only be a temporary reprieve if we ever rely on people like the Cox sisters and the people in their employ to be the checks and balances on corruption and incompetence they’re supposed to be - they’re not anymore.
Maybe later folks, but not today.

Some of you amaze me. How dare any of you talk about Black people voting for Black people. We’ve had nothing but self-serving White men forced down our throats for eons. What about the racist Ronnie Raygun? Yeah, the one who was born in Illinois, was governor of California for two terms, but who started his campaign in Philadelphia, Mississippi. What happened in that beautiful and historic city? Nothing but the murder of three people fighting for civil rights. AND he stated that he would focus on states’ rights. Hmmmm. Wasn’t that the issue when the smart White people told the slow speaking and dumb White southerners that slavery must end? Ronald Raygun. Wow. And what did you White people do? Ran to the Republican Party in droves. The first thing President Silly did was attempt to scuttle the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Service Commission. White people loved the so-called Reagan Revolution. And another thing, you dummies. Did you know that there is the is an organization that is composed of Black Republicans? Of course not. The Revolution is dead folks, D E A D. If Senator Obama doesn’t win, let all of you know that the age of White dominance is done. Oh, by the way, who is voting for Obama in greater numbers than Black people. WHITE people.

Touchy subject. While the African-American population in America is one of several minority populations, it is arguably different from others given its history.
It will be interesting to watch, not just the actions of the Obama Administration, but the expectations of various minority groups, especially in relation to one another, and how those expectations are met. Or diminished. Or ignored. Rather like the Bush Administration did with the Christian Conservatives. Use’em and lose’em.
But, I believe Hispanics (an extremely diverse group) is now a larger minority population than African Americans. They may not have the ‘history’ - but they are an up and coming group politically. Just look at the effect the anti-illegal Republican campaign had on Hispanic support for McCain - the numbers four years ago to now.
So how will an Obama Administration handle this? More on one group than another? Will they weigh expectations against the realities of political power of the various constituencies? Or will they pretty much do what Obama has said and transcend, move past all this?
What a shocker that would be. For many.
And I also wonder if the rank-and-file outlook will be different from that of the ‘leadership’ - who may be looking to expand their power and influence, not give it up, and surely see it dwindle in relation to another constituency. Here we go, back to that “money and power as the basis” thing again.
As I said, a touchy subject. But interesting.

I voted for Obama. I am happy to talk to many folks of all colors that support Obama in Georgia. In my early voting line, I talked to folks of all ages, all backgrounds, and both genders. We all want change over negativity. God wants change in this world and the opposition is going to have to realize this the best they can. You cant claim God and support a campaign that spreads blatant lies about their opponents, prefers war over negotiation, and resorts to unethical tactics to win elections. Our people, the Obama supporters in our various ethnicities, backgrounds and income ranges are about to take over. Obama would have never gotten this far with only Af. American support, the Republicans biggest mistake is attempting that division.
Most of you that are crying about tax plans either dont make enough for Obama to come after it, or dont have enough sense to not file all your revenue as income.
Righteousness and decency for all will prevail tonight. Trust.

I am a TRUE Democrat and have been since I was old enough to vote There has NEVER been a Republican in office that ever say anything as to how they will handle the “middle class.” I thought I feel into this catergory, but now I think I am below “lower class.” I would NOT vote for a man who doesn’t address UNITY, middle class, health-care, a senseless war. All McCain speak of is TAXES and COPORATE America. We need a change and OBAMA could have been GREEN, but to know that he will have my best interest at heart is the ONLY reason I VOTED for OBAMA. It really kills me when white people get upset with blacks because they are so proud to see a black man this close to the white house. Yes I say black man, because if you know your history, it was written that if a man or woman had 1% of black blood they were black. This has nothing to do with race, it’s about change and this country can’t take anymore Bush/Cheney policies and that’s what you would get with McCain/Palin. More importantly it’s not just Americans that are excited about Obama it’s people all over the world and lets face it because of Bush. … ANYBODY noticed how nasty the Republicans are versus the Democrats? Anybody noticed that, like, EVERYWHERE!?? And, like, these people call themselves the real Christians?!!
A PRAYER REGARDING OUR ELECTION, Dear Lord, I come before You today with an anxious heart, yet brimming with hope. I know you are a merciful and just God, so I ask for You to cover our electoral process here in America with Your grace. Let the sun shine across the land as people exercise their right to vote and may every vote be counted with accuracy. Lord, I confess that as a nation, we have veered far from the course of justice and mercy that You have decreed. So, I ask today for Your forgiveness and restoration of America. Help us to strive to honor You and the generations that have gone before us in this nation that You have blessed with such material richness and freedom. As we vote to change leadership today, may You grant us an outcome that will bring a righteous shift in direction….one that will seek peace rather than war…one that will seek to uplift the poor rather than hold them down….one that will generate a greater concern and help for the sick, the elderly and the disenfranchised. Grant us leadership that will seek to be good stewards of this beautiful green planet upon which we dwell. Lord, I pray that you will take this divided and polarized nation and breathe a new Spirit of unity into our hearts and I pray for this to begin within the people who esteem the Name of Jesus. Forgive us all for the many hateful and fear driven thoughts, words and deeds we have indulged in over the last years of our nation’s history and grant us a new hope and humble desire to work for peace, justice, mercy and love. I ask all this in Jesus Holy Name, Amen.

Just as I hit “post” I was thinking about your 2:43. What I was getting at, in a meandering way, is that I don’t think Mormons who voted for Romney were hopeful of more exceptional treatment for Mormons. Or that Greeks who voted for Dukakis were expecting programs to benefit Greeks. Or that women who voted for Hillary were expecting more government largesse to benefit women.
But my impression is, this is the difference with Obama, that many white citizens believe that an Obama presidency will result in more exceptional treatment or programs for African Americans, not necessarily tied to correcting past injustices.
Do African Americans believe that they will be beneficiaries, greater than other minority groups, under an Obama Administration? I don’t know of any reliable data to support a conclusion one way or another. But I wonder if that isn’t the crux of the concern.
Personally, from what I’ve heard candidate Obama say about “give back for what you receive” (speaking of community service for college assistance), of “no free rides” and similar expressions on other topics, I think a lot of people are going to be quite surprised by what a Pres Obama does. As well as by what he doesn’t do.

The Republican Excuse Machine is cranking up. If Obama wins, it’ll be because all the black people voted for him. Or because the election was rigged. Or because the media refused to interview Sarah Palin.
Republicans will continue to ignore the fact that their party’s leader ran the country into the ground. The election has always been about Bush and his party’s incompetence. By choosing Palin, McCain sent a clear message that his administration would continue the incompetence of the last eight years.

As a student of sociology I am amazed how it was not Obama who brought up the race issue but rather my republican party. It is unfortunate that there are still so many people with racist ideologies and thoughts out there concerning blacks. As a Republican, I was so turned of by the fear mongering among the party and the inability to articulate and offer solutions to the country’s ills. My vote for Obama was not because he is black. It is because I feel at this time in our society when hope is at an all time low and the American brand and reputation around the world and amongst ourselves is at an all time low, He offers hope. As a black father, I was able to tell my children this morning to remember everything about this day. U.S. Forces Overseas Anxiously Await Election Day Results
Stakes are high for U.S. soldiers as Tuesday’s presidential election will decide the future of their mission in Iraq.

Tuesday, November 04, 2008
MOSUL, Iraq — U.S. soldiers in Mosul awaited the outcome of Tuesday’s presidential election that will decide the future of their mission in Iraq, but most of the dining hall TV screens were tuned to sports, not politics, as they ate breakfast.
Those who voted had already mailed in their absentee ballots long ago, and soldiers at Camp Marez in the northern Iraqi city said nothing special was planned for Election Day.
“We can’t stop doing what we have to do. We got to keep running,” said Maj. Gary Dangerfield of Chicago, spokesman for the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment.
Sgt. James Fowler, 27, of Fresno, Calif., praised the Army for encouraging soldiers to vote and helping them with absentee ballots. He said he voted for Obama but “I am outnumbered 10-to-one, especially among officers” and senior noncommissioned officers who said they wanted John McCain to win.

I’m not saying the world is coming to an end because a black was elected president, I am saying that his obvious socialistic policies may be the starting point of true fianacial collapse of this country. But fear not, we true believers of GOD do not fear the future, we know the LORD will take care of us and leave the non beleivers with exactly what they want, a world where anything goes, anarachy and a total collapse or morality, followed by the death of man as we know it.

There are many interesting comments to this post. #1-The key is to vote…no matter who you choose to vote for, voting is critical. In every election. #2-Racism, sexism and name calling doesn’t solve anything. #3-Please know your facts about the people you’re speaking about on the political scene or anywhere else for that matter. #4-Praying to God now…have you been praying your entire life? Even this entire campaign? You should pray for everyone that is running and not your choice because regardless, they will all be working together in the end. #5-Do not quote the Bible if you don’t know what the scriptures mean. Have them translated for you first instead of using them in your own sick and demented ways. #6-All black people did not vote for Obama. #7-All white people did not vote for Mccain. #8-All black people are noty Democrats. #9-All white people are not Republicans. #10-Incase you haven’t noticed, we all live in this world together…all colors, races and ethnicities so stop the hateration.
People are coming out in unprecendented numbers to vote this year because they are sick and tired of the unnecessary risks that have been taken by the current government. They see a real opportunity to make a difference. Yes, you are going to see people come out and vote simply for the fact that they are seeing something that they have never seen before…a Black man is on the Presidential ticket. But instead of being happy that they are voting, you choose to criticize? Get a grip. Be happy that people are waking up to the fact that they can make a difference and that they have a right to help make that difference and contribute to society in a major way.
There are some logical and well thought statements and arguments in this post but they are few and far between. Before you come up in folks face with the racism, the drama and yes, even the form free bullsh*&, make sure that your argument is solid or else you’re just wasating your time. And trust me, I am just fine with those who do not agree with or like what I am saying. You have that right as an American and as a human being.

I did not vote for Obama but the reason had nothing to do with him being black, half-black, or half-white. It had to do with the fact that he is a Muslum, and spent 20 years in a church with a Pastor that preached his hatrid of America. Furthermore, the state of the ecomony had nothing to do with George Bush. It was Clinton who pushed Freddie Mae to make home mortgages to those that could not pay the premiums. Yes, the economy soared with the construction of homes, but now has failed once the homeowners started filing bankrupcy. With it came the decline of consumer confidence, banks and businesses closing, stock market declines etc.

Paul,
Racial relations in America is ALWAYS a touchy subject, particularly for those lacking in intellectual honesty and introspection.
There are many, many facets to this discussion of course, but the two that get the most press are:
1) The “conservative’ one - blacks who vote for Obama are by and large stupid and shiftless and looking for handouts.
2) The “liberal” one - that believe the assertion that blacks would only vote for him because of the color of his skin is completely ridiculous.
Both are equally incorrect IMHO.
I just got off the phone with a friend in West Hollywood, Ca. and she said the line was FULL of young people, black and white, who she could tell were likely voting for the first time.
OF COURSE, many of these people are voting simply because BOH is in the running. Would they be there if the race was between McCain and say Chris Dodd?
You tell me, but not likely.
The first position I referenced is not even worthy of discussion except by them, among their circle jerk friends.
I had hoped that our first “black” US President was not going to be just another corporatist toady like this one seems to be. Not a “safe” candidate who doesn’t really threaten the hopelessly corrupted white oligarchy. And not one that the uneducated kids are inanely enamored with.
But a TRUE champion of the under-represented 100 million people in this country, of ALL races, who are simply asking for some economic and social justice….

Nice sentiment.
You too, Tyetye.
If I may suggest, when you wrote “Its really sad that this race is based on Obama being black.” that possibly it could be phrased as “It’s really great that Obama ran a campaign that wasn’t about him being black. But others have made it that.”
Change isn’t coming.
It’s here. What form the change takes and how that’s absorbed by certain expectations will be worth watching.
Mrs. G - I’m out to buy a bottle of something sparkling. Red, perhaps. I wish N-GA were still here to make a recommendation.
Tonight, I’d love to hear McCain and Palin both say, as they’re looking into the camera, “And to the rest of the world - eat your heart out. “This” is America.”

There seems to be a lot of assumption here that many African Americans are voting for Obama just because he is black.
Many are voting for him because he is an excellent statesman, because he is the promise of something better for our country, and because he is not in the party that shucked and jived while Hurricane Katrina decimated cities and towns.

I love how this gives conservatives the opportunity to respond without being shouted down or things thrown at them. Or groups of racist coming to close an event because they have a different view. Yes, I really love it and it sounds like Ms Godzilla is having an orgasm. Good for her. Sure is nice to see conservatives voice their unskewed opinons. However, there are liberals who want to pass the fair act and take away conservative opinions. Is that ok? The only opinion is the non conservative opinion? As one who was born and raised in Georgia, I’m ashamed by the racist rhetoric that still stubbornly hangs on there. Black people aren’t turning out to vote in record numbers simply b/c Obama is himself black. They are voting because he is the first Presidential candidate in a very long time (I’d argue that Jimmy Carter was one) who actually speaks to people who want a capable leader who actually cares about them as a people more than he cares about the profits of oil companies and weapons manufacturers.
And even if the color of his skin is a motivating factor for some, to compare that to the rampant white racism that is eating our country from the inside out is just stupid. We have NEVER had a non-white President. It’s about time for the diversity of our country to be represented in national office.

For you knuckleheads out here who continue to spew that trash about Blacks only voting for Obama “simply because he is Black” and that “they cannot explain why they support him”, try this on for size if you will.
Where so many small minded individuals allow a single hot button issue (or two) to cause them feel they are obligated to vote a certain way, a great majority of Blacks (such as myself) see Barack’s ability to lead as the prevailing quality that moves us to vote for him. We look at a country that for the past 8 years that has had sewn into the air a climate of extreme polarization, class-ism, government that has been overreaching - all in the name of national security. We see a country that has isolated itself from effective diplomatic relations with even our so-called allies. I could go on and on…
You will find in all great leaders throughout history an innate ability inspire and move people into action, and they have been able to do so through their ability to communicate and their stature. This is Barack Obama.
Everyone knows that the so-called “experience” argument is a bunch of B-S. I myself served 15 years in the military and well know that my service (in which one specializes in a particular area) does not qualify me for political office any more than the kid who went to college. In the military, you are taught to FOLLOW ORDERS, period. Even as a “leader” you are merely FOLLOWING ORDERS, as mandated by the UCMJ. And I sure as h3ll don’t view an individual who got shot down and got their behind kicked by the enemy as being qualified. You are trained in boot camp to understand that is the reality of war, and you are provided guidelines to follow in the event you become a POW. My father was in Vietnam, he did his job (101st) and didn’t “get caught”. And he was in much more dangerous situations daily in the jungle than McCain.
It really is that simple, an individuals who is intelligent, who dares to think larger than the average person and has vision, who commands respect, inspires, and LEADS. That’s all a president does, and that’s why he (or she) has great minds around them to advise. And let’s not discount the fact that he is a constitutional attorney and Constitutional law professor. It’s about time we have someone in office who actually knows something about the Constitution. Maybe we can actually follow it once he gets into office.
As I know for some of you this explanation will still not be enough. I choose not to take up all the the ALC blog, but it really is that simple.

While I’ve always been an independent, I’ve voted Republican more often than not. I couldn’t do it this time.
We can’t afford four more years of failed Bush policies. After being infuriated for weeks by the false, untrue e-mail messages regarding Obama being everything from the antichrist to a Muslim plant to Hitler reincarnate, I spent weeks researching the candidates’ actual platforms.
I voted for Obama.
Was it exciting to go to the polls and see so many people voting? Absolutely.
If Obama wins, will it be a victory for not only blacks, who undeniably have suffered from prejudice regardless of those who would claim otherwise, but also for America and its relations with the world? I believe so.
I do believe that both McCain and Obama are far brighter than Bush and that both truly want the best for our country. Regardless of who wins tonight (or tomorrow a.m.), I pray we will all be in a better condition in 4 years.

To your point about incomes and taxes. My income is in the range Obama promises a chunk of the evil rich mans money. So why wouldn’t I support that? BECAUSE IT’S WRONG!! Pure and simple. Our government was never intended to be the vehicle the lazy and unsuccessful use to take money from others for their benefit. If you think this “change” rhetoric is about anything more than gettin’ paid, you’re being dishonest. It’s pretty funny how much hand wringing and outrage is expressed by conservatives about the fact the blacks are favoring the Democrats so heavily. The idea that this is just because of Obama’s skin color is a typical oversimplication of the issue by the right. Obviously the fact that he is black is a highly motiviating factor for turnout. If you identify with someone personally, your going to be more motivated to vote for them. Examples of this would be bush 2 for evangelicals and McCain for veterans. The reason I voted for Obama/Biden is simple….I expect the Leaders of my country to be smarter than I am.
Magna cum laude vs. #860ish Sounds like most of you are voting for McCain ONLY because he’s WHITE!
How do you explain this to your kids??? Then again, maybe you don’t expect excellence from your children.

So many of the McCain/Palin supporters seem to be doing just what their candidates were doing. That is being concerned about painting an erroneously negative picture of the opponent and not focusing on the issues. Some have totally been consumed with the negative information and feel totally confident in repeating it, (Concerned), no matter how it makes them appear.

Try again. Has it occured to you we don’t want a socialst of any color in the white house? I’d vote for Condi over McCain or Obama, for the record, but I wouldn’t vote for my own father if he was a socialist. Get over yourself with the racist crap. You obviously don’t get out much.

You have crossed a line my friend that is so repugnant to me that I choose to no longer converse with you. Questioning whether our troops have the knowledge to vote is about as unpatriotic and shameful as it gets. But of course you have no problem with 18 college kids or convicted felons, or ….. the list is endless.

Well * RB from Gwinnett* I’m very happy to answer your question before I get on the road heading home.
If you simply go and look up Barack’s Illinois Senate record, you will find literally hundreds of Bills he either authored or co-sponsored. You see RB, you have to meet people “where they are”. I’m sure you caught my statement about serving 15 years in the military.. With that I can tell you,..no I can assure you that in my assignment of duties I have TONS of “leadership” experience, however I am confident in saying that I cannot lead this entire country, even with advisers around me. My mind is not that “big” at this point, and I have not been conditioned to think in the framework that obviously Barack Obama has in his Harvard Education and legal scholarship and political experience.
The very fact that Barack Obama has crafted the campaign that he has shows that he has the mind and fortitude to outmanuever some of the greatest political minds and powers in the world. Money is no substitute for a great strategy (just as people say “money can’t buy you class”) – it’s true. This thing has been no fluke by any stretch of the imagination.
The truth is, the establishment just cannot seem to stomach the fact that this “boy from the southside of Chicago” has run roughshod over the entire political establishment of this country, and so you morph him into some boogeyman as if he is some monster, when it has been proven time and time again that all of these politicians should be considered with a high degree of skepticism, regardless of party affiliation or “experience”.
“What has he led”?
I’ll tell you what RB..he’s got this whole d@mn nation listening and in a tizzy. You draw your own conclusions. I wonder if you actually contributed to the McCain campaign…

By ROCK THE VOTE!! :To Pam: When you look at Obama what do you see? A BLACK MAN!! It doesn’t matter what color his mama is, and that’s exactly what every white person in America sees; “A black man”, that’s why America does not want Obama in the White House because he is a “black man”!!!They don’t care about him being educated and talented and graduating from Harvard; no! All they see Pam is a BLACK MAN!! Wake up and realize that racisim is alive and well and never went away; people just swept it under the rug, it’s sad but true… Maybe oneday, people won’t see your color, but see you for who you are and not judge or make negative sterotypes; but that obviously will not be happening in this generation.. Keep on rockin the vote!
Chris: Dude, you need to chill out. I’m white (not from the South originally) but my wife is a white Southern woman. We’re both Obama supporters. Her mother who I’ve heard using the N-word lives in South Carolina and is voting for Obama. She likes his policies including his healthcare plan and his tax policies for the elderly.
As they say, when you’re drowning, you don’t notice the color of the person throwing you the live preserver. You don’t give many of us folks enough credit. And don’t forget that Obama got his start in lily white Iowa. So chill out, have a beer and enjoy history without the bitterness.

You are ABSOLUTELY correct..all you racists don’t blame black folks when you wake up tomorrow morning and Obama is the President, they are only 12% of the population. Blame me and other white folks who want to live in a Country thats respected around the world.
Did you see the turnout when Obama visited other countries? McCain can’t get 10,000 folks to come hear him speak.

White people - Most blacks do not want handouts or special treatment. We want the opportunity to fail and/or succeed on the same level playing field. We have shed our blood in every war defending our country even though we did not share all the privileges of being an American citizen. There is no hatred for you despite all the evil directed toward us since we arrived on this planet. We love our country without conditions.
Am I proud of Barack Obama as a black man? You damn right I am. You will find that Barack Obama will not offer special considerations to black people. He will make freedom and opportunity a priority for us all. GOD BLESS AMERICA on this the proudest day of my life!!!

Obama has essentially zero experience. He’s not even completed a term in the Senate.
And the comment about similarities to Carter. :D Truer than you know probably. Carter was a horrible president. We had double digit inflation. He’s a constant embarrassment to the country. He means well I think, but he has a messiah complex (sounds familiar).
Obama’s facist ideas will do a huge amount of damage to the country with that harpy Pelosi and Reed to back him up.
Don’t make the assumption that because we don’t want Obama, that we support McCain.

Hi. I’m a white dude in California surfing the web unable to work because of the historic nature of tonight’s returns. I stumbled upon your comments from Georgia. Fascinating and educating string. It’s interesting how the internet permits speech that reflects what people truly think, as opposed to what is believed to be acceptable in polite society.
So let’s celebrate tonight and tomorrow that our country’s democracy is still functioning and capable of being self correcting. Whoever wins, we must get past the red/blue dichotomy and the 50% plus 1 style of governance the Bushies never got past. The times demand we Americans relearn how to work together cooperatively and respectfully. I happen to believe one presidential ticket is much better prepared to do that than the other.
So greetings from the other side of America. Are your peaches really that sweet? Did you really invent Coka Cola? Remember it was your Jimmy Carter that first tried to lead us to energy security?
Anyway, congratulations to US (of A).

Hardly. I’d say Bush has done FAR more lasting damage to this country than Carter could dream of.
Carter or Clinton aren’t even in the top three as far as lasting damage to the country. Bush is. I’d say based on everything known at this point, Obama will make his way into the top three as well.

The buzz around Obama’s campaign is from his promise to give people money in exchange for their vote. If you find that deep and thought provoking, I fear for you and for this nation.
You’re obviously much more impressed with the “Harvard Education” than I am. I’d much rather have someone who has a clue than someone who went to some presitigous school.
Can you share with us one of those “hundreds” of bills Obama sponsored from Il? Something other than “name this building or that road” after some canpaign contributor?
You’re voting for a BLACK man who will give you evil rich white people’s money, dude. Pure and simple. Good luck with socialism, my friend. It hasn’t worked ANYWHERE else in the world it’s been tried, but maybe you’ll figure it out. Before it’s too late.

Sorry, but I beg to differ. In context, that verse is just one others known as the Beatitudes that Jesus spoke to the multitudes that were listening there on the mountainside. It applies to all true Christians down through the ages. Why do I say true Christians? Because some of the worst persecution comes from counterfeit or false Christianity.
“Not everyone who calls me Lord, Lord shall enter the Kingdom of Heaven ……”
