Report from the polling madness
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Just got back from voting. I showed up at 7:30, voted at 10:15, so two and a half hours at John Hope Elementary in intown Atlanta.
Where did you vote today, and how long did it take?
Also, in a little aside, I note that the Investor’s Business Daily poll, the one that has been drawing so much interest on the conservative side because it was supposedly the most accurate in ‘04, and because it showed a race as close as two points just a couple of days ago, now puts its final margin at seven.
Funny how that happens.

Took 30 minutes in City of Decatur, and that included the walk from house to polling place. We must have one of the smallest districts around…
Felt bad for local school having a bake sale and banking on long lines..

Pharr Elementary, Snellville, 1 hour @ 9AM. Very white, very conservative polling place. Had FOX News on the TV in the school lobby. A poll worker finally turned it off, twice, after someone in line turned it back on. The conservatives better turn up the voting volume if they expect Shock and Awe tonight. Not going to happen.

How is that funny? Are you implying something? So a source is inaccurate. Do you imply that because it is a conservative source, that it is trying to sway the vote? And you think liberal sources don’t try the same thing?

This is what is scary:
President Bush’s aides have been scrambling to change rules and regulations on the environment, civil liberties and abortion rights, among others— few for the good. Most presidents put on a last-minute policy stamp, but in Mr. Bush’s case it is more like a wrecking ball. We fear it could take months, or years, for the next president to identify and then undo all of the damage.

I was in line just after the polls opened here in Grant Park. Hundreds in line and 2.5 hours to vote. Everything was working smoothly and everyone was pleasant. Our precinct is mostly white leaning liberal, and more people than I’ve ever seen at the polls. The line was down when I finished, so the best time to vote would have been mid-morning and probably mid-afternoon - like they told us.

City of Mountain Park polling place has a shortage of the cards that go in the machines so that slowed things down just a bit. Even so, we cast our ballots for Obama in less than 30 minutes. Ours is a small precinct with ~270 registered voters so we’re fortunate to rarely even have lines.

Shawny: Let me spell this out so even you might chuckle. A few days ago, conservatives such as AJC/DNC Management got all snarky because one poll — IBD’s — reported a wee margin between Obama and McCain. It seemed to bolster McCain’s contention that the polls were tightening. Now IBD has released a poll and Obama’s lead has grown, which probably means the race hasn’t been narrowing and wingnuts’ last grasp for something positive has gone up in smoke. Haha, end of joke. No, Jay wasn’t implying ANYTHING about IBD, but about the folks who suddenly seized on its poll for a day or two, after scorning all others, because it offered them SOME dim hope of victory. Here’s a friendly tip: Perhaps you should see a doctor about your paranoia.

BTW, it’s obvious you’re only focusing on the polls because they’re telling you what you want to hear.

Yes because in the past when the Democrats were in charge, all conversations were regulated. Conservative talk radio was tamped down. Especially during those first two Clinton years. I think Rush Limbaugh operated on Pirate radio sort of like the movie “Pump up the Volume” where Christian Slater plays a rebel teenager with a pirate station out of his car. I don’t know how the Repubs took over under those conditions, but somehow they did. It was like the French Resistance during WWII I guess. Get ready for the Supreme Court to suspend the first amendment…wait a minute I must be remembering AJC/DNC’s delusional dreams. Sorry ‘bout that!

I live north of the Dallas/Ft Worth metroplex. My wife and I walked to our polling station. There was one person in line ahead of me. One of the people working said there was a bit of a line at 0730, but even that wasn’t bad. He said 53 percent of the registered voters voted early.
In front of the voting area was a woman in a chair with an Obama button. I asked her if many people had questions, she said no, most walked on by. I said I was struck by the number of signs from both parties in what I assumed was a very Republican area. She said her husband was the Democratic captain for the precinct/neighborhood (I believe that was her phrase) and he’d been seeing a steady increase in their membership from disaffected Republicans over the past four years.
I said I think that was expressed in 2006 and was continuing. I said her husband must be pleased. She said he was actually concerned - that many people coming over were really quite moderate but felt frozen out by the more ideological Republicans. She said he had said many times that a broad mix of people in both parties, with a healthy membership base, was actually better for the country.
Here I’d been reading your columns and AmVets and others and thought that the influence of the farright was a bit overstated. Well, live and learn.

I voted at the Alpharetta Community Center. I waited 90 minutes, which is about what I expected. Everything went fine up until I got in the gym. It was extremely frustrating to see 20-40% of the booths unoccupied at any given time. There are two very inefficient workers who were doing a very poor job keeping people moving to open booths. If someone was doing a good job moving people along to open booths, the wait time could have been greatly reduced.

From Pat Buchanan at Townhall.com:
The GOP needs to confront the truth: The failure of the Bush presidency lies not in a failed execution of policy but in the policies themselves and the neoconservative ideology that informed them.
Yet, still, the party remains in denial, refusing to come to terms with the causes of its misfortune. One expects they will be given the time and opportunity for reflection soon.
High 5’s Pat! Pat’s my main man!

90 minutes in Milton at Summit Hill Elementary school; just got back at noon. One thing though, there were people walking around waving MCain/Palin signs on the school property! Isn’t that illegal? I’ll bet if I walked in there carrying my Obama sign, I would’ve been beaten and dragged off the property. Is there a number we can call to report this kind of stuff?

because liberal are so simple minded they seem to miss the point. No, “conservative” policies, such as those espoused by intellectuals such as Milton Friedman, DO work, and they have been proven correct by actual, real world consequences of policies Democrats support. Look to Cuba, China, and Vietnam. For Christ’s sake, een China recognized the benefit of opening their market (to some degree). The problem with the Republicans is that they abandoned their core values. The problem with the Democrat Party is that the are left-wing socialist nut jobs.

Corporal, to some degree you’re right, not because her 10 seconds answering a question would in anyway violate the law but because folks from the right wing would jump all over her and make an issue of it. That’s why she skidaddled so quickly and said she would talk more outside. She would have been wiser to say “lets talk outside”, but instead she answered their question. Your reaction is over the top though…not that that would surprise anyone. Keep grasping those straws

I voted last Monday and it took a little over an hour. I went with my son (first-time voter) last Friday to vote, and it took an hour and a half.
I tried to get my dad to go vote early because I thought the lines would be bad. He’s been pretty sick this year and it’s taken his toll on the tough old coot, and my sisters and I were worried about my dad standing in line that long.
He said he’d voted on election day for 50 years and he wasn’t going to change that now. He wanted to appreciate the whole experience of the day. Plus, he likes the coffee and the poll workers who’ve been there for about the same amount of years he’s been voting. It’s like catching up with friends for my dad - you know, a social event.
I told him last night to make sure to take a lawn chair and a snack (he’s diabetic) - he said “Aw hell, I’ll be alright - y’all’ve been listen to your mother too much.”
Just talked to my mom, my dad left and was home in 15 minutes (had a big “eat sh!t” look on his face). Life lesson, always listen to your dad.

I voted last week during early voting in Forsyth County. Walked in & out with no wait; it was about my easiest voting experience ever.
Not knowing the details of how IBD was setting the samples or assumptions of their poll versus the others that have been published over the past few weeks, I made the intentional choice to avoid highlighting or discounting any of them. The vastly inconsistent results would lead me to be suspicious of any of them especially when the same polling organizations seems to contradict their own results on a day-to-day basis.
The true lunatic nature surfaces when it becomes apparent that the only real requirements that individuals are using to “evaluate” the polls are whether or not it agrees with their presumed / expected outcome.
-My- perception is that McCain has been gaining ground on Obama as the election drew to a close, but the true question will be if he simply ran out of time to possibly overtake him. The biggest risk that -I- see for Senator Obama is if the historic overestimation of support for Democratic candidates is again occurring. However, since the McCain campaign is banking on this historical trend continuing (and giving them a pleasant surprise on Election night), it is equally plausible that the numbers are essentially accurate & there was truly no real way for McCain to overcome the advantage.
It should make for an interesting evening & morning.

Hey - I am the person who was at the quick trip when they were offering free lottery tickets to vote. I even made a comment to the cashier as she checked me out for my soda that I had not been offered a free ticket for voting and she just smiled. The store is right across the street from a polling place.
I am not a race baiter or a liar and neither am I an idiot and the only thing that differentiated me and any others who received vouchers was the color of my skin. An odd coincidence at best - a puroseful exemption based on my race at worst. You decide. And all that is not important - I don’t care about the tickets as much as I thought it was illegal - sort or like paying for votes.

I got to my Decatur polling place at 7 a.m., and the line was at least 3 times as long as for any other election I’ve seen at this polling place in more than 10 years as a Decatur resident. And that’s after weeks of early voting. Tough luck, Republicans!
Passing drivers honked their horns and exhorted us as we waited. The poll workers did an excellent job of moving everyone through efficiently. The whole process took about an hour, and I didn’t see any problems with my ballot — although, thanks to touch-screen voting with no verifiable paper audit trail, it’s faith-based voting.

Yes We Can
And it looks like we did…
Kudos to my fellow decent Americans, especially those of us in the blogosphere. Our long national nightmare is (almost) over.
We’ve overcome not only the fear-mongering, the hate-mongering, the superstition, and stupidity of Bush and his minions, we’ve overcome the incompetence, cowardice, and censorship of and by the so-called “mainstream media”.
We stood up to them and did their job for them, when they refused to do it. We brought this government down and pointed out the buffoonery and idiocy of their supporters - not them. They sucked up and pandered - not us.
Congratulations.
Keep going though.
The election of Senator Obama as the 44th President of the United States of America will only be a temporary reprieve if we ever rely on people like the Cox sisters and the people in their employ to be the checks and balances on corruption and incompetence they’re supposed to be - they’re not anymore.
Maybe later folks, but not today.
Enjoy your victory.

Sorry, I don’t smoke.
Yes, -I- think that McCain has been gaining ground over the past week or so - largely because Senator Obama has wisely moved to a “run out the clock” strategy of avoiding any big gaffes. Personally, I think that is a good political move since the perception was that McCain was trailing.
No, I don’t want “more time”. Senator McCain has had almost two years to run his candidacy in expectation of today’s election. Today is the day that is set aside for the American people to respond to those who are courting their support. If he finds a way to win, that would be my preference. If not, I have to wake up tomorrow and deal with the consequences. Either way, I’ll stay in the arena of ideas promoting the principles and philosophies that I think best for myself, my family, and our nation.

U.S. Forces Overseas Anxiously Await Election Day Results
MOSUL, Iraq — U.S. soldiers in Mosul awaited the outcome of Tuesday’s presidential election that will decide the future of their mission in Iraq ……..
Those who voted had already mailed in their absentee ballots long ago, and soldiers at Camp Marez in the northern Iraqi city said nothing special was planned for Election Day.
“We can’t stop doing what we have to do. We got to keep running,” said Maj. Gary Dangerfield of Chicago, spokesman for the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment.
Sgt. James Fowler, 27, of Fresno, Calif., praised the Army for encouraging soldiers to vote and helping them with absentee ballots. He said he voted for Obama but I am outnumbered 10-to-one especially among officers and senior noncommissioned officers who said they wanted John McCain to win.
For those who fought for it, freedom has a flavor the PROTECTED will never know.

Tam do not worry some of us do understand that injustice can happen to white people as well. Only problem on this blog the only racism or injustice we cover is for non-white people who agree with the liberal agenda.
If you wanted to get people upset you should have said it was white people giving it out. You would have been heralded as a warrior in the battle for equality. Then at the last moment you could have told them the truth and watched as they all turned on you.
Some of us do understand that one of the most scrutinized and discriminated people in America right now are white men.

Mr. Snarky: You are above it all. Above the fray and noble. We are mocking liberals, except liberals aren’t following along. As if anybody can find serious conversation underneath a Jay Bookman blog. Ha! You liberals…too funny.
So what do all of you Democrats think about the Black Panther video that shows him wielding an nightstick outside of a poll precinct? Probably not a big deal to y’all, huh?

Hi Matthew - what is it that Europe is desperately running away from?? From the looks of things - most Europeans are quite happy with their lives just the way they are.
In fact - those governments are elected by the people for the people and America should work back towards that. I believe with an Obama victory this evening - that is what we WILL do!

tcoach,
Did you really mean, ‘Some of us do understand that one of the most scrutinized and discriminated people in America right now are white men.’ ???
Unbelievable…but, hey, you had me fooled a little earlier into thinking you were respectable (despite our different views on the candidates). I won’t be fooled again…

Tam, I believe your story since it fits the same patteren as all the other “pick up the homeless, bribe them with stuff, take them to vote for Obama” stories we’ve heard. And yes, it’s vote buying, but isn’t that what this entire election has been about? Vote for Obama and he’ll take money from evil rich people and give it to you. It’s the ONLY thing the uninformed liberal voter can tell you about Obama’s platform. “I’m going to get paid.”

Another thing you can thank your (and my) Confederate ancestors for leaving you. If you feel discriminated against it’s because things aren’t the same as they were before. You get no more priviledges for looking and talking the way you do. JB Stoner, Lester Maddox, George Wallace are dead. Good riddance. You and RB need to come out of the closet.

Tam - You’re welcome to get organized and boycott that store. Get a bunch of protesters to point out the unfairness. Fine by me. Somehow though I bet you aren’t all that threatened by it. It’s not really fair and kind of annoying when people do stuff like that but its not like you’ve been systematically deprive of voting for the past 200 plus years, so you’re not all that worried about it, really.
So tcoach, if you could change your skin color to black to escape your opression from being white, would you?

OpenYourEyes,
My family is from Scotland, fool. My grandparents emigrated here in the 30’s with NOTHING. They had nothing to do with slavery and the conferacy as you claim and I don’t owe black people ANYTHING more than the consideration due them as a human being. If you feel guilty for slavery, you deal with it. My family wasn’t a part of it then and we don’t want anything to do with it now. Get over yourself, fool.

Um, sir, if you could change your skin color would you? Come on, man. It is true that white males in the U.S. face discrimination. There has been a change in America—so much is racially charged. So much of it is anti-white, and so much of it is a result of Liberals. Liberals playing the race card—ALWAYS!! You can’t get it through your heads that people oppose Obama because of his policies, not his skin color. Let me as this: Do you find it to be pecuiliar that above 90% of black that are polled are voting for Obama? Or are the only “racists” in America those that won’t vote for Obama, even though whites are split 50/50. You libs are such demagogues and have myopic, simple views on America. Give it a freaking rest for once.

The problem with this country is that everyone suddenly got too damn sensitive about crap!!
He called me this, him praying offends me, this offends me, that offends me!
If everyone realized that no matter what you do, you will offend someone, and no matter what another person does, it will offend you, and that we all need to grow up and quit being so damn sensitive, the world would be a better place.
“I shot him cuz he looked at me funny” Yeah, it offended you, but you probably did something to offend him-grow the hell up!
“People saying ‘Merry Christmas’ offends me!”
Well, you not believing in Christmas offends some people, so who is right?
This country was based on freedom, and for that to happen, we all have to realize that we’ll be offended, AND we’ll offend others.
If we all learned to let it go, then maybe things will improve.

Did you report it to anybody but Jay Bookman?
All the major networks and both campaigns have numbers to call to report that kind of thing.
Try calling the local Fox station.
Did you say it was a Quik Trip? Shouldn’t be to hard to find a corporate number for them.
If you really saw that, REPORT IT.

How so I need to go no further than a couple of incidents.
Don Imus, who I think is an idiot, was fired from his job for saying the nappy- thing. While it is perfectly fine for Lil’ Wayne to say “cracker” 11 times in his new song, that is played on the radio in a continuous loop.
If a white person in this country claims not to be voting for Obama what is the first thing he is accused of? Racism.
Have you ever looked at the way title IX works and how it eliminates opportunities for males, solely because female students choose not to compete in a certain activity.
Also how many colleges are known as Historically White College. There are none while there is advertising on major networks for HBC football games.
I guess I also missed that program for scholarships or admission for white males. There are grants scholarships and even special admission status for everyone else.
These are only a few. I am a young white male who has been influenced and interacted with different races and cultures my entire life. I have been to every continent except Antartica. I am not racist, have never even been accused by any who know me. This is a view shard by many younger people I know as well. We are tired of there being unequal standards of accountability.
What I cannot understand nor have I ever, is why I should be held accountable for something members of my skin tone chose to do long ago. Why should others get scholarships or any special treatment based on skin tone.
You can call it irrational if you want but what is irrational is the feeling of guilt that is taught to most of America, based on their skin.
Just look at how people attacked the earlier post about lottery tickets. That very well could have happened and she was blasted for saying it. I ask you would it have been the same if she had said they were only giving them to white people?
There are racist white people always will be just like there are racist black, yellow, brown, red and purple people out there. For the liberals to act like it is only a one way street is absurd.
There is a difference, if you are white there are a certain number of things you can say and not say, while if you are not a white male then the list of things one can say becomes much longer.
All I truly want is for every one’s actions and words to be treated equally.
Show me how any of what I said is wrong.

I don’t owe black people ANYTHING more than the consideration due them as a human being.
Then you should be able to accord the same consideration to people that don’t think like you, politically. I won’t bother calling you a fool, since that’s your favorite word. Living here “only” since the 30s until now doesn’t give you or your family a pass. Did your parents and grandparents use the “whites only” entrance, water fountains, toilets or sit in the front of the bus?

Mr Snarky, Yes, I would change skin tones I don’t think it defines who you are, so it would not bother me at all. Apparently the thought of changing races does bother you or you think it bothers others. Otherwise you would not ask me that question, it says more about you than anything else. Especially since I am a coach I would change, it would help my career. I have known of a couple of my friends who are college coaches and they did not get jobs that they were more qualified to get. My friends were even told by the head coach of those schools that the school needs to hire a black coach, to match the dynamic of the team better. I have witnessed this and it is not something you can report. Its like a guy reporting rape by a woman, not going to work very well. Also if you cause a stir in the college coaching world you risk being blackballed. These things do happen I am glad you have not had to experience them but others of us have.
Just because you do not think that it happens is not an affirmation that it does not, from what I have seen on this blog that usually means it has happened.

I didn’t say people oppose Obama just because of his skin color. Heck, some blacks vote against him. That said, there is plenty of racism in this world, though conservatives deny it. Ask a black person. Go ahead. Either way, my views are not simple because the problems are not simple. I also realize that racism goes both ways and neither is right. But it is wrong to pretend that it doesn’t exist or that whites face extreme oppression. I know that on balance black people face more obstacles…especially poor blacks…just look at the night shelters. Of course most black people are voting for Obama after Bush courted them and then pursued a hard right agenda and didn’t give them the time of day, I’d expect 90+% of blacks to vote for any democrat.
Have a good day.

I would suspect my grandpaents couldn’t afford the bus, but if it makes you feel better to think all white people are guilty of keeping black people down, you go right ahead. It’s obvious the facts aren’t relevant to your opinions. To you, white and conservative means racist while I suspect you think white and liberal doesn’t, even though all the white liberal’s grandparents used the whites only toilets, drinking fountains, and rode in the front of the bus too. It’s a fantasy world you live in, OYE, not one of reality.
You’re just not intellectually honest enough to admit that, are you?

I know, i just had to throw some more fuel on the fire, have some fun!
Seriously, though, i believe that is the truth, that we’ve become too sensitive. I mean, really, is it possible to please everyone all the time? EVERYONE reading this blog should know the answer to that, so why doesn’t our government?
You want a person to vote for, and if experience doesn’t matter, just pick someone off the street with no political cares at all, that’ll be the person to run the Nation ‘more correctly’.
Our government hands down is just like a company. And rule #1 of business is you can’t spend more than you earn. That also happens to be my belief of the #1 thing wrong with our government. People should have the freedom to call people names, yell or scream obscenities, pray whenever, eat whenever, do whatever! Yes, there are some basic rules-don’t kill anyone, cause damage to others’ property. But, to be a ‘truly free country’ we have to realize that while some may not agree with one and others do, just don’t let it bother you.
Example: Say you’re anti-abortion, ie: pro-life. You live in TX. Some woman in NY gets an abortion. Yeah, it offends you, but did it really affect you? NO!! Jesus people, you’re going to offend some, and people are going to offend you. Is it correct to fight over it, or more correct to get over it? Think about that one…

I don’t care that I was not given a lottery ticket to vote. Perhaps she just assumed that all white people were gonna vote anyhow and I did not need one - I don’t know what the reason was - I thought it was rather amusing that I was singled out not to receive one until I got called a liar for talking about it.
I just thought it sounded illegal for anyone to receive something to vote. Seems like the right to vote ought to be enough incentive to get out there. And I do not mean that especially for Black people - I mean it as Americans.
This is the reason there is no dialogue about race in America - it either gets into the blame game or someone gets their feelings hurt.
Obama is as much white as he is black and its not African Americans putting him in the office - they comprise only a little over 13% of the poulation - It the whites voting for him that will put him there. So we should all have perspective about it. Soon whites and blacks will be the minority in America which will be owned by China and what are we gonna fight about then.

Bosch,
If your Dad is 75 or over he can go to the polls in Georgia on election day between 9:30 and 4:30 and go straight to the front of the line with no waiting.
Middle-Aged White Lady,
The typical setup in Gwinnett always looks like there are two polling stations off line, but those are actually setup for people that need to fill out a provisional ballot.
Jay B.,
It’s hard to believe you’ve gotten so many people to just about give out their address on the blog today. I had an hour and forty five minute wait at mid morning in Gwinnett. The only problem was a line jumper but I stopped him right behind my wife and me. He was my son though so nobody got too upset.

Saw the alleged Black Panthers on TV. The only station that had it was Fox News. All I saw was 2 black guys wearing berets and a couple of Fox News guys on camera asking them about some guy with a night stick. Never saw anyone w/ a night stick and the guys looked like any number of black fellas you might see on the street in Harlem or Chicago or wherever. Just 2 guys wearing berets. The whole story was BS; totally made up by Fox News to promote their anti-Obama agenda.
