President-elect Barack Obama….

We have witnessed history.

And President-elect Barack Obama understands that. But as he pointed out in his speech Tuesday night in Chicago’s Grant Park, this election is not the change that we seek. It sets the stage for change, but it is not the change. That will be more difficult.

No one can know how Obama will perform as president. Obama himself cannot know or even pretend to know. The challenges that he faces, that we face, are too profound for such conclusions. As he acknowledged, he will make mistakes. But he is an intelligent man, a caring man. And I confess that I do not understand those who fear him as a danger.

We have indeed witnessed history tonight. McCain’s concession speech was eloquent and I sincerely hope, genuine.

The change we seek is us. perhaps now we can move forward as one nation, put the divisiveness, pettiness, and childish, judgmental behavior behind us. The campaign seems to bring out the worst in us - may we now reach to find the best in us, in all of us, as we work together as a people to right this great ship called America and become once again that last great hope.

God bless and protect our new president, and God bless America!

I missed John McCain’s speech, but my daughter said she found it very encouraging and inspiring.

I did watch Obama’s speech and the overwhelmingly positive nature of it made me encouraged about America’s karma.

And to those who heard evil in Obama’s speech, although there was nothing in the least bit negative even one of his words, look inside.

Tonight, I feel more patriotic than I have in a while. Looking at Obama’s rally, you see every walk of life. Black and white have been replaced by “the people.” There’s hope for this country. It won’t be tomorrow, but Obama has given us hope. In that feat, he has been more successful than any president I remember.

If you want the socialistic Europeean type government where the government will do everything for you, then you have it. Our country is now on the downward swing and will never be the greatest country on earth. I do not have a problem with a black president, but the Messiah is not the one. He is going to be the yes man for Pelosi and Reid. Just wait for all the tax increases on ALL of us, then you will see.

Jay said: And I confess that I do not understand those who fear him as a danger

Well, if you think about it, it is quite possible that the most radical thing about this election is not even that Barack Obama is a black man.

It may be that the most radical thing about him is that he is arguably the first true intellectual since Thomas Jefferson to become president.

And that - at least as much as his race - strikes a death blow to a certain kind of narcissistic nativism and a certain ferocious anti-intellectualism in this country.

You know what kills me Harry White? People like you who worry about higher taxes and your ability to buy a new flat screen television while we have men and women fighting another country’s battle for people who despise us and our way life. Men and women serving our country are dying for a freedom we appreciate, but yet the people they are protecting spit on them. Let them stand on their own feet and let us take our 10 billion and spend it on our own country and buy down this massive debt we’ve been saddled with by President Bush!

Hey rockp3, I don’t worry about my ability to buy a flat screen televison. That is not important to me. And yes I do worry about higher taxes. That means that the money that I have worked hard for is being taken away from me at the point of a gun and given to others that possibly do not deserve it due to their choices they made in life. And in regards to our military, I have nothing but love for them. My father served in WW2, and I have had other family members that have served in the service in every conflict since. I have served my community for over 30 years in my professional where friends of mine have died, so do not chide me about this area. As Merle Haggard said, when you talk about them and that I don’t care about them, you are walking on “the fighting side of me”. Also, the fighting men and women of thhis country have done good things over there, but you will not see the good in the left slanted news media. And also, the President doesn’t spend the money, that is up to the legislative branch to set it up. The democrats have had the control lately and now since they have the entire control, wait until your taxes go up and as Obama said this weekend, he is going to bankrupt the coal industry (putting alot of people out of work) and our power bills are going to sky rocket (his words). You sound like a person who is a follower and not a leader. Hope you enjoy being lead by the nose down the primrose path.

So Harry, I assume you were very euphoric when GWB won, yet look where he has steered the US. My advise to you is simple: Lead, Follow or Get the Heck out of the way.
My father fought in the Korean War….yet when he returned, he was denied his basic rights as a US citizen. Yet, he (and many others who shared his same experience) have a tremendous love for this country. Spend some time considering this, and you may understand the tears of joy I shared with my father tonight.
Your fears about higher taxes is a selfish problem. Me, my, mine…. What impacts your personal finances more, paying a few % points in higher taxes (if you make more than $250K) or a poor stock market, hugh deficits, borrowing money from China, high job losses and depressed housing market?

The republicans have screwed this country and have set us back financially. It’s sad that people won’t even give him chance. McCain may have won Georgia but this state wasn’t good enough to elect him. Even though I’m sad to say I live in this RED state my vote still counted. My god bless you people who are in disbelief. I think we can all agree that this election was more about the failure of the Republicans than the success of Barack Obama.

And furthermore, there is some fuzzy math going on right now. Obama has won for sure, but the numbers being tabulated are not accurate as of yet.

The Democrats have won the White House, but without the 60 seats needed to be filibuster proof in the Senate, they are going to have to reach across the aisle.

I just wonder how long it’s going to take before the Democrats realize that the man that they elected is not the Messiah. Even worse, how long will it take before the liberal attack dogs in the press turn on their new owner.

This wolf will shed his sheep disguise and then hunting season will be wide open in Washington.

Let us as American citizens support our New President-Elect Obama through our prayers as the Bible instructs us to pray for those in authority. I have had to learn this even though the one whom that I may have voted for was not in office, it was my duty to support my President whether that person was my choice or not.

Unfortunately many whites will treat Barack Obama as they treat the MLK holiday. He will be considered a “black” president, just as they consider the MLK holiday as a “black” holiday. Regardless of how successful he is, they will still view him differently from previous presidents. That will especially be the case if he is not perfect.

Jay, I agree he is an extremely intelligent man and a genuinely caring man. For those reasons alone, I think most will give him a fair shot. My guess is many if not most who fear Obama do so for valid reasons in the same way thay many feared a McCain presidency. I know my folks who are senior adults believe his policies will further hurt the economy based on their experiences under President Carter. I hope they’re wrong but it’s a valid reason to be concerned about his presidency. Sure, there are some who have invalid reasons whether they be based on race or class, but those are far fewer than the Cynthia McKinneys of the world think. Speaking of someone who operates in fear, wow, that woman goes to bed thinking up conspiracy theories. As a McCain voter, I too shed a few tears last night seeing so many African Americans so excited and engaged in the political process. I hope in retrospect they will appreciate Powell and Rice’s service and achievement much more than they have to this point. I’m finishing up reading Obama’s book The Audacity of Hope. He is a visionary and a healer; I can only hope and pray he will govern as a uniter and a moderate. BTW, it might be worth mentioning, my choices for US Congressman were an African-American man running as a Democrat (whom I voted for) and an African-American female doctor running as a Republican. That too says a lot about America and suburban Atlanta.

For all you so so-called “Christians” who are always out here always taking the attitude that God is on your side and praying that His will be done, well I have news for you…Jesus Christ is also my Lord and Savior and guess what?? God’s will WAS done.

The Bible teaches that those who are high will be made low, those who are low made high. You prayed against Barack, who so willingly professed Christ before man… and we know what the Bible says about that. The Truth prevailed.

God WILL humble you when you begin to see yourself as equal to God and when you get it all mixed up. You have done that “Christian Conservative Right”.

The truth is…God has or endorses no political party. We are ALL his children. My… how y’all seem to forget that. The truth is, you’re not very Christian at all and only pretend to be. But that’s okay, God is in charge.

Barack Obama…representing what it means to be a true Christian (not that it matters whether he is or isn’t).

And don’t get me wrong, I’m no religious “nut”, just speaking. You see… a lot of us “Christians” tend not to wear our faith on our sleeves and misuse it to oppress other people. The only “Christ” people see or (not see) is in us.

“No one can know how Obama will perform as president. Obama himself cannot know or even pretend to know.”

Murtha called the people of Pennsylvania racists and Oblahma told them he would bankrupt their energy industry.

They still voted for him.

For one of the few times, I agree with kookman, nobody knows, they have no idea what they just brought down upon themselves.

One of the most coddled and pampered generation of children in history, driving mommy and daddy’s car, living off mommy and daddy’s money, wouldn’t know a day’s work if they fell over it, voted for “change,” that change being mommy and daddy no longer have any extra cash to lavish upon them.

25,000,000 illegal immigrants “changed” the spending habits of the very people that employed them.

But you know what is most funny, the gigantic diaper filling and whining industry that the democrats have fed off of the last 8 years, who will they turn their sobbing attentions upon, now that Republicans are out of the picture?

Now that things are going to get worse?

Sober, I have prayed daily for this country and will continue to do so. Do you really think your tirade above is Christian in any way? And the biggest fallacy of what you wrote is whether or not it matters if Obama is a Christian. It matters immensely for Obama personally and for our nation, which was founded by Christians on Christian principles.

The only comfort that I can take from all of this is the knowledge that God is in control. Not Obama, McCain, Bush or any of the rest of the world leaders who the masses look to for answers to all of their problems.

Funny all the hate still here. The best one is that Obama is Socialist. Tell that to the Socialist Party and the man who was running on that ticket for president, Brian Moore. Even HE says Obama is the most capitalist candidate that was running. That torpedoes the socialist argument.

Also for the record, a true Socialist advocates state control of the means of production. Or in Republicant Georgia talk, the state would own your moonshine distillery, and then you would buy the product from them. What you are trying to accuse Obama of, “speading the wealth”, is Communism; that’s the system where the government controls your life by controling what you view (FCC), where you go (TSA), who you talk to (DHS), and reallocates money as it sees fit (GOP and Federal Reserve). Get it straight.

Then there’s the experience argument; no one has heard of him. Before Curious George W. Bush ran for president, no one outside of Texas heard of him, except the people whose money he took to start his failing companies. That kills that argument. Then there’s the name/religion argument: oooh, his middle name is “Hussein”. SO WHAT? Republicants act like it’s WWI and he’s German or WWII and he’s Japanese. And there’s also that whole “he’s a Muslim” thing. First, what’s wrong with being Muslim? If that was true, his Middle East issues would evaporate overnight. Second, he’s CHRISTIAN just like the rest of you racist, frothing-at-the-mouth Georgia Republicans are. That just leaves good ol Georgia style racism. Thank God you all have a drought. You get what you deserve, you racist hypocritical Christians. Two more elections, and we’re going to make Georgia blue. Yes, we can! Thank you liberals from the north and west, Asians and Hispanics for moving to Georgia.

Good Morning, what a great day for Americans…

Despite what some of the sore losers are posting, we are leaving the darkest time in our history-the worst presidency-history will bear that out.

I am so happy for our country. It was 40 years ago that MLK was assassinated. 40 years ago that segregation was alive and well.

We have gone from the shame of that, to today’s historic moment…..whatever your feelings are, you must admit that this is a wonderful thing for our country.

It wasn’t even close-electoral or popular vote-the majority really has spoken, there really IS a mandate this time around. The status quo is dead.

I for one, am thrilled that someone who looks like my own sons has risen to the presidency-it has proven to my boys that they CAN do anything they want to in our great country.

Off topic:

Midori? Are ya out there…? Happy birthday-enjoy this present!

Republicans-please don’t spend the next 4 (8!!!!) years tearing down Obama,. Let’s try something new-moving on and working towards repairing the damage that has been done by this current administration.

Socialist? That would be the current administration and Palin (baliout, money from big oil to residents). Good enough for Wall St and Alaska? Good enough for the rest of us. Communist? ridiculous charge….surely you aren’t that ignorant to believe that will come to pass.

Look no further than around our nation at people celebrating-people celebrating around the world..how could you NOT feel hopeful?

Off to edumacate the younguns. rw, babe, that was deliberate, you know…..and since i’ve not bothered to proofread this, i am sure you’ll find tons of boo-boos…call it my gift to you today….

Yes We Can

and yes we did!

I really didn’t think it was going to happen until Saturday. I really thought that racism and stupidity would rule the day.

Yes, it’s still rampant in Georgia and south of the Mason-Dixon, and in the mountains and molehills of places like Idaho and Wasilla, Alaska. But basic human decency prevailed yesterday, and, for once, the best man won.

I’d like to thank some of the regular rightwingnut bloggers here who post their hate-filled 12 to 18 hours a day here. Your paranoid rantings provided a never-ending example of the disease (and the diseased minds) that has come to be called “conservatism”.

*In Russia, Pravda was ecstatic, announcing that “Eight years of hell are over.” It proceeded to catalog George W. Bush’s perceived failures and slights against Russia and criticized the cost of the “grand American soap opera” during a time of economic crisis. *

Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, congratulated Obama and urged him to speed up efforts to reach an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement. “We want him to support the Palestinian cause or at least not to be biased towards the Israeli occupation. We have no problem establishing normal relations with the United States to explain our just cause.”

An aide to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Supreme Leader of Iran, said there is now “capacity for the improvement of ties between American and Iran if Obama pursues his campaign promises, including not confronting other countries as Bush did in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

Some Iraqis said they would believe positive change when they saw it. “Obama’s victory will do nothing for the Iraqi issue nor for the Palestinian issue,” said Muneer Jamal, a Baghdad resident. “I think all the promises Obama made during the campaign will remain mere promises.”

Hoshyar Zebari, the Iraqi foreign minister, said Washington would not adopt a “quick disengagement” policy with Baghdad under the presidency of Barack Obama as a “great deal is at stake here”.

“We would hope that the slogan of president Obama - ‘change’ - would be reflected in the foreign policy in the United States, especially towards Sudan and oppressed countries, the Palestinians, the Iraqis and the Somalis. “We would like to see some real change between Sudan and the United States.”

I find it abundantly disconcerting that the former McCain supporters have thusfar lacked the grace and humility that their candidate displayed last night in conceding the race to Barack Obama.

Obama has pledged to reach across the aisle and embrace ALL Americans. Implicit in this promise is the notion that he will govern as a CENTRIST. The alarmist talk from the right in the midst of a rigorous election campaign may be excused. But now that there is no turning back…it is such a pity…that the right wing continues to attempt to instill fear, to incite hatred, and to divide our nation at a time when unity is so very important.

Give the man a chance. I know you hate that you’ve lost. But John McCain is an American first; a Republican second. Please try to reflect his impeccable patriotism, folks. Together, we can bring our nation back to its former greatness.

Sloan says: “It matters immensely for Obama personally and for our nation, which was founded by Christians on Christian principles.” Where exactly do you people get this? This nation was founded on the principle of freedom of religion and separation of church and state. This nation was founded by people fleeing religious persecution, not toward it. Do your homework, the most important of our founding fathers weren’t even Christians (Jefferson, Washington, Franklin), they were Deists. And if you don’t know what a Deist is, why don’t you put down your bible and pick up a history book every once in a while? You might learn something!

Barack Obama is testament to those who gave their life for freedom and civil liberty for all. Many of them were white people. Michael Schwerner, Viola Liuzzo, Andrew Goodman, John Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy and many more that I cannot remember as I get older.

This black man will never forget them on this day of celebration. I will not let my children, grand children and generations to come forget them either. I can now put slavery and all of its after effects behind me(I will not forget).

God bless you and and God bless America.

For those of you that have been calling Obama a socialist for wanting to rebuild the middle class that has been dismantled by the Bush administration, here’s a couple of suggestions for you. When you get your tax break, just refuse it and send it on to a rich person that needs it more than you do. If the Obama administration helps you with health care that you cannot now afford, just say “thanks but no thanks”. The people have spoken and the majority wants a change in direction. The republican brand is broken.

Funny thing how this Presidential Election was not about race (supposedly). Yet, here we are the morning after the election and every single network and media outlet is interviewing mainly black people. Oprah, Maya, John Lewis, etc… They are putting up surveys on how empowered black people feel and the inspiration that this election makes them feel. It was ALL about RACE and the way the hooligans are going on about it - PROVES IT! Use common sense people. Open your eyes and if it’s a horse… call it a horse.

What’s your point, anyway?

For some people, this election was all about race.

For others, like the good people of the state of Iowa who overwhelmingly supported Obama with a negligible black population, it most assuredly was not.

African-Americans have a lot to celebrate today. It’s only been 40 years since the race riots represented a blight on our great nation.

Give them the chance to celebrate, for God’s sake. This is a historic moment for them, a monumental step forward for our country. Drop the conspiracy theory bigotry, and get on with your life.

I’m concerned about electing an inexperienced, essentially unknown empty suit, (thanks to our incredibly, unabashedly biased and increasingly irrelevant mainstream news-and-entertainment media), created by the ethically challenged Chicago Democrat machine, who’s demonstrated and espoused some very troubling socialist tendencies, who has the most liberal voting record in the US Senate and (here’s what really gets me) sat for twenty years in a pew in Jeremiah Wright’s church listening to anti-American, racist rants — even if it was only for political purpose. Obama was elected because he is articulate (and clean), mellifluous of voice, and because his smooth, polished posturing and teleprompted delivery of the machine’s script sounded “presidential” to millions of American celebrity worshippers who watch “American Idol” and “Dancing With The Stars” and read People magazine. The so-called “youth vote,” for the most part first-time voters who have never met a payroll much less earned a paycheck, demonstrated once again (as I once did as a recent college graduate by voting for Jimmy Carter, something I’ll regret till the day I die) that passion, inexperience and ignorance are sometimes no match for truth, knowledge and rational behavior developed by spending some time in the “school of hard knocks.” While such traits will get you killed participating in many activities, when voting, merely give you the politicians you deserve. And, yes, racism was certainly a factor — on both sides — during this campaign and will, counter to many naive expectations, hopes and predictions, fester and become more of a problem in this country under Obama, but, in the end, I believe the most critical factors were the economy, of course (and someone please explain what influence the president really has over our economy), the continued dumbing down of America and the over-the-top Bush bashing (some of which he admittedly deserved) by the mainstream news media. I’m not holding my breath to see if they treat Obama the same way. God Bless America nevertheless.

It’s a given that some of the more belligerent Republican posters on this blog will never truly see the light. They’ve been careful to only watch approved news networks and read approved magazines to make sure their views are never challenged. It’s part of the conservative mindset; they are less open to adaptivity and change.

This is the reason there aren’t many hugely successful left-leaning media outlets, because the liberal mindset is more open to different ideas.

During the speeches last night, it was telling how the mention of Obama’s name was booed by a few of these rabid supporters at McCain’s concession speech, while the opposite occurred during Obama’s rally. Partly McCain and Palin’s fear-mongering stirred up these strong emotions among their electorate.

The minority of the die-hards, herded aptly by Hannity, LImbaugh, and their ilk, will continue with the “you’re either with us or against us mentality”, while the rest of the country that wants to rebuild what we once had will work together, because they are sick of the years of divisiveness and see that the serious problems that face our country — they face all of us.

Ginger, our founding fathers were predominantly Christian men who used Christian principles to formulate our country’s constitution. You want to trivialize Christianity in the founding of our country , that’s your business; but it is completely revisionist on your part. Freedom of religion is an important tenet, but the freedom of religion that our founding fathers spoke of had to do with freedom to worship God in the manner of their choosing. The British government forced them as British citizens to recognize the Church of England as the official Christian church of the state. I can assure of two more things: I won’t put down my Bible in favor of a history book. And it does matter as to Obama’s personal relationship with his Creator for his personal salvation and where he may lead our country. Call me and other Christians ignorant if it makes you feel superior, Jesus says He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. That is good enough for me.

God: dw, why did you ascribe such unflattering characteristics to Ginger?

dw: Because she dared to suggest that there should be a separation of church and state.

God: But could Ginger have been a Christian and still lived in a country that made that distinction?

dw: Why of course, God. Look at me.

God: And was there anything un-Christian about her compulsion to learn history through reading books other than My book?

dw: Why of course not, God.

God: Remember, dw: Judge not, lest ye be judged. You may have thought your days of worship in My Church gave you a free pass to My Kingdom in Heaven. But you failed to recognize one of My most fundamental tenets.

Back to the drawing board, dw.

I hope Sen Obama is able to lead this country to great heights. Do his fellow Democrats want that too or only want to gloat? Beware - gloating will get you right where the Republicans are today. So mind your manners.

The middle didn’t align itself with your party, just your candidates. And independent voters have proven many times over that changing sides is as simple as counting to 4 (years).

Republicans were certain when they won 8 (and 4 for congress) years ago they had a lock on independent Americans. Their actions - and lack of action - proved how quickly independents will move on. Dems should study recent history with an eye toward positive change instead of pleasuring themselves with a recount of the perceived ruination of the country. Retaliation doesn’t work with the middle. And revenge is a dish best served cold.

Obama will try to build a consensus. His liberal voting days in the Senate are now behind him. At the time, he was a LEGISLATOR attempting to do the will of his constituents. His base of constituents has now changed…vastly. He represents all of us…and that will force him to become more centrist in his policies. Will Pelosi and Reid try to cow him into remaining a liberal’s liberal? Probably. But Obama is much, much stronger than they are. He chewed up Hillary and spit her out; he won this election by a landslide and now has a mandate to change. Don’t expect the liberal you’ve read about. Expect a President who realizes that this country is in deep doo doo, and needs finesse and consensus to bring us out of it.

Congratulations to Sen. Obama and his historic victory. I did not vote for the guy, but he is now my president and I will steadfastly support him and hope that he can lead us as promised. I am one of those small business owners classified as rich by Obama, even though I certainly don’t feel rich. My partner and I employ 10 right now…down from a high 2 years ago of 16. We have always paid above average salaries and wages and have resisted using temporary help in the past. We are weathering the current financial crisis without having to lay anyone else off, but we will be watching closely for any intrusive policy or law mandated by Obama or the Dem controlled Congress that would impact our current profitability. So, if we are forced to withhold higher payroll taxes or pay more in worker’s comp, health ins., etc., we will no doubt respond with layoffs. Our graphic artist position will be outsourced and any other role that can be filled by an independent contractor will be evaluated for starters if direct costs rise above present levels and revenues remain stagnant. I hope our company’s revenues under Obama’s administration will grow to offset the anticipated increased expenses, because firing a long time employee is the most unpleasant task to ever perform. I am hoping for the best, but wonder how long it will take until the bloom is off the rose and reality sets in. I’ll also be paying close attention to the number of people I see this time next year at the homeless shelter I serve through the church. I pray that all this “hope” will inspire and lift these poor souls out of their rut and into productive lives. We’ll see.
