Long live the King (of the Hill)!
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

It was a sad weekend at the Bookman household with the announcement that “King of the Hill” is being canceled. It wasn’t for everybody, but those folks just cracked me up everytime I saw the show. Bill, Hank, Boomhauer, Dale — they were like friends of mine, or people I grew up with.
In fact, a couple of them WERE friends of mine, as my daughters like to remind me:
“I think Dale looks and acts just like Wallace, Dad.”
“Yeah, and Olson is so like Boomhauer!”
RIP, Hank.

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Nov 03, 2008 /PRNewswire—USNewswire via COMTEX/ — Mike Carey, president of the Ohio Coal Association (OCA), today issued the following statement in response to just-released remarks from Senator Barack Obama about the nation’s coal industry.
“Regardless of the timing or method of the release of these remarks, the message from the Democratic candidate for President could not be clearer: the Obama-Biden ticket spells disaster for America’s coal industry and the tens of thousands of Americans who work in it.

Yes, we went from Leave it to Beaver and the Cosby Show to the likes of King of the Hill and that is a perfect relection of what has sadly happened to this country.

jay: Since I was working this morning, I’ll take the opportunity to now comment on your first column for Nov. 3, 2008 — GOP’s high-water mark: March 21, 2005
You found the intervention on behalf of Terry Schiavo distasteful?
Let’s take a look at Senator OBlahMa’s “high-water mark”: April 4, 2002, shall we?
Ref. Pg. 32 — So — and again, I’m — I’m not going to prolong this, but I just want to be clear because I think this was the source of the objections of the Medical Society. As I understand it, this puts the burden on the attending physician who has determined, since they were performing this procedure, that, in fact, this is a nonviable fetus; that if that fetus, or child - however way you want to describe it - is now outside the mother’s womb and the doctor continues to think that it’s nonviable but there’s, let’s say, movement or some indication, that, in fact, they’re not just coming out limp and dead, that, they would then have to call a second physician to monitor and check off and make sure that this is not a live child that could be saved. Is that correct?
So was Terry “limp……dead……a fetus……a child”?
No matter I suppose. Those tough decisions like human/life suffering are above OBlahMa’s pay grade. He’s more concerned with nuke storage than “utility closet storage”. Of minor concern to him:
Obama sits through testimony that babies born alive after an unsuccessful abortion are left to die alone in a utility closet. The babies are provided neither comfort, care, nor sustenance during their brief lives. When this practice was brought to public attention horrified citizens petitioned their legislators to address the matter. Proposed legislation is drafted.
OBlahMa opposes the Born Alive Infant Protection Act, choosing to let the little ones suffer out-of-sight….out-of-mind.
Your second box on the hopscotch? Let me reiterate the policy…
The atmosphere is notably improved
Gee! Thank you daddy…
Last and least noteworthy — just being polite here.
King of the Hill?

I don’t know if this is the place to say this, but I have been told that venting on these blogs helps.
This weekend my nine yr old daughter answered the phone, as we have begun letting her do when my husband and I are outside. The call was one of those robocalls and it upset her deeply. My husband and I are both Obama supporters and the call said some awful things about him that were not only tasteless, but innaccurate. We have been very excited about the election and have had a great time teaching our daughter about the workings of politics and how WE believe in treating other people.
How sad that the McCain camp conducts itself in a manner that disrespects the values we are trying to teach our little girl.

McCain’s Latest Desperate Attack Debunked: Obama And Coal
Update (12:28AM, Nov. 3): On Sunday, John McCain launched the final attack of his campaign, a fraudulent assault on Barack Obama that serves as a fitting reminder of the fundamental dishonesty not only of his own campaign, but also of the dishonesty of his allies in the right-wing propaganda establishment: Matt Drudge and FOX News.
All you need to know to understand the video is that the Drudge, FOX, and the McCain campaign joined forces with Newsbusters to push a story that the San Francisco Chronicle had concealed an eleven month old recording that supposedly contained devastating audio of Barack Obama proposing to bankrupt the entire coal industry.
Not only was that story false (more detail below), but it turns out that Barack Obama and John McCain have the same position on clean coal technology, and Ohio’s Republican senator said McCain’s plan to fight global warming would “put coal out of business.” Here’s the video:

what is funny about King of the Hill and even the Simpsons, is not just the modern take and satire on society, but both shows are based on Family, family values and yes, believe it or not there is a fair share of religion and God in both shows. But most people that never watched or only saw one or 2 episodes would miss out on that aspect of the show.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE ICE CREAM
The most eye-opening civics lesson I ever had was while teaching third grade in 2000. The presidential election was heating up and some of the children showed an interest. I decided we would have an election for a class president. We would choose our nominees. They would make a campaign speech and the class would vote. To simplify the process, candidates were nominated by other class members. We discussed what kinds of characteristics these students should have. We got many nominations and from those, Jamie and Olivia were picked to run for the top spot. The class had done a great job in their selections. Both candidates were good kids. I thought Jamie might have an advantage because he got lots of parental support. I had never seen Olivia’s mother. The day arrived when they were to make their speeches Jamie went first. He had specific ideas about how to make our class a better place. He ended by promising to do his very best. Everyone applauded.
He sat down and Olivia came to the podium. Her speech was concise. She said, ‘If you will vote for me, I will give you ice cream.’ She sat down. The class went wild. ‘Yes! Yes! We want ice cream.’ She surely would say more. She did not have to. A discussion followed.
How did she plan to pay for the ice cream? She wasn’t sure. Would her parents buy it or would the class pay for it? She didn’t know. The class really didn’t care. All they were thinking about was ice cream. Jamie was forgotten. Olivia won by a land slide.
Every time Barack Obama speaks he offers ice cream, and fifty percent of America reacts like nine-year-olds. They want ice cream. The other fifty percent know they’re going to have to pay for it.

As for accepting the ruling of the courts: Only if they operate within their jurisdiction. For example, they cannot set state-level electoral policy, as they did in Bush v. Gore 2000. They can, however, rule on specific issues of ballot legitimacy if the state electoral office cannot.

I hear you but it’s basically semantics.
I have spent time in virtually every country in Europe. The reality is that those who live there are being taxed to death, their freedom of speech is becoming more and more limited and their democratic culture (as you describe it) is in big trouble via uncontrolled immigration. They are on a serious downhill slide and it looks as though we will follow.

What is your basis for continuing to allege the US Supreme Court cannot rule on certain state-level issues, such as “electoral policy”?
Article VI of the Constitution is clear:
“This Constitution, and the laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof; and all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States, shall be the supreme law of the land; and the judges in every state shall be bound thereby, anything in the Constitution or laws of any State to the contrary notwithstanding.”
States cannot overrule Federal laws. State laws cannot conflict with Federal laws (although in certain instances they can set a tougher standard, as in environmental and wage issues).
I’d always thought of your position as a rather far-right position. You’re the first I’ve heard of on the Left to take that stand.

[Socialism is liberal. More people (preferably everyone) have some say in how the economy works. Democracy is liberal. More people (preferably everyone) have some say in how the government works. “Democracy,” said Marx, “is the road to socialism.” He was wrong about how economics and politics interact, but he did see their similar underpinnings.
Communism is conservative. Fewer and fewer people (preferably just the Party Secretary) have any say in how the economy works. Republicans are conservative. Fewer and fewer people (preferably just people controlling the Party figurehead) have any say in how the government works. The conservatives in the US are in the same position as the communists in the 30s, and for the same reason: Their revolutions failed spectacularly but they refuse to admit what went wrong.](http://www.romm.org/soc_com.html)

FOX has, of course, cancelled “King of the Hill” in the past, only to give the series a last-second reprieve. In addition, the network has reliable held “King of the Hill” in extended renewal limbo before last-second pick-ups. There’s a long history, in fact, of FOX animated cancellations leading to eventual resurrections in some form or another, think “Family Guy” or “Futurama.”
For now, the trades are reporting that the show’s staff was notified on Thursday that this latest batch of episodes will be the show’s last.
But what does that actually mean? “King of the Hill” is currently airing episodes from its 12th production cycle. In April, the network ordered a 13-episode 13th season for a spring 2009 premiere. That means it’s likely that “King of the Hill” could run for nearly a year after its cancellation

Well it truly saddens me to hear that King of The Hill has been cancelled. Maybe it’ll be like Andy Griffith and live on in syndication forever. Hank reminded me of a lot of people in life. Always doing the best he could, sometimes falling short, but always trying. And I always admired Boomhauer for cutting through the BS and getting straight to the point. The world needs more like that.
By biker chick
November 4, 2008 5:15 PM | Link to this
How sad that King of the Hill will no longer be produced. I certainly hope the reruns live on in syndication for many years. The odds of me ever watching animated series on Fox are astronomical, but one or two episodes of King of the Hill and I was hooked. I turned my now husband onto this show as well.
The show was never ever mean-spirited, vulgar or nasty. It showed a man (Hank) who had very traditional values (i.e., his choice of hair cut was either the young Roger Staubach or the old Roger Staubach), seller of “propane and propane accessories”, faithful and devoted to his wife Peggy, and somewhat uncomfortable with his creative and forward-thinking pre-teen son, Bobby.
Hank’s your typical Texan, proud of his state, his football team and his family. Add in the wild collection of characters including his psycho, insanely politically-incorrect father, Cotton who is proud to tell everyone that he is only 4 feet tall because he lost his shin bones in Korea, Hank’s buddies from the neighborhood and his prejudiced Laotian neighbor, Kahn, and you have a formula for constant conflict with the staunchly conservative Hank.
It was one of the few shows left on the air that was genuinely “laugh out loud” funny, dealt with real issues and showed a man with “an honest haircut” trying to adapt to the modern world while still maintaining his old school values. RIP Hank Hill. You will be sorely missed!
