It depends on what the meaning of ‘even’ is….

You have to feel sorry for people like Rick Davis, John McCain’s campaign manager. In a conference call with reporters, he just claimed the race in Iowa is dead even.

The four most recent public polls in Iowa put the margin at 14, 15, 8 or 11. The most recent of those polls are those that report the biggest margins. I don’t think “dead even” means what Davis hopes it means.

The numbers are equally grim nationally. According to Gallup’s just released numbers, McCain is slipping a bit when he needs to be gaining:

PRINCETON, NJ — The political landscape could be improving for Barack Obama in the waning days of the campaign. Gallup Poll Daily tracking from Oct. 28-30 shows him with an eight-percentage-point lead over John McCain among traditional likely voters— 51% to 43% — his largest margin to date using this historical Gallup Poll voter model.

Since Tuesday, McCain’s support among traditional likely voters has dropped by four points (from 47% to 43%), Obama’s has risen by two points (from 49% to 51%), and the percentage of undecided voters has increased from 4% to 6%.

New reports by the Hotline tracking poll and the GWU Battleground tracking poll both show a one-point swing to Obama; Rasmussen shows a one-point swing to McCain, but within the same three-to-five point range Rasmussen has reported for the last five days.

Countries are like people. They have a life cycle. I personally believe ours is in the October of its existance as we know it but if McCain should pull of a miracle, it will only forstall the inevitable by four or eight years.

The country has changed, the electorate has changed, the way we govern has changed and the result does not bode well for this Republic. We will unfortunately go the way of socialist Europe with all of the ramifications thereof and the world will no longer have a policemen in the night.

My only regret is that it happened on my watch.

If Obama wins this one (or someone worse in the future), we hand this nation over to a new generation and history will judge if you had the wisdom and courage of past generations.

I wish you well ……………

Corporal, As much as I hate to see it happen to this once great nation, I have to agree with you. We’ve been shifting left quickly for the past 20 years and I don’t see anything that can stop it. You are correct that a McCain win will only slow it for a while. The “handout” crowd is growing and will eventually outnumber the productive crowd and it’s game over.

I keep asking these socialist to tell me of a country where socialism is working well and they have yet to come up with one, but they seem to be running to it anyway. Seems rather short sighted to me.

Booger. Hate America? The better question is if you love socialism so much, why don’t you just move to Europe and leave us alone. We’ll be just fine here without you (but not you without us). You could have had all the social programs you wanted 20 years ago if you had just moved over there. I’m sure they’d love to have another deadbeat on their payroll.

The poll results are what they are. They may or may not be an accurate representation of the outcome on Election Day. Personally, because this election seems to have been so difficult to evaluate & predict, I have tried to avoid getting too excited or frustrated by the results of any poll.

As for comment on the numbers that Jay quotes or any others or even specific campaign mouthpiece’s spin on them, the number is what it is. Poll numbers are a product of the results received and any & all statistical estimation / interpretation / adjustment that might have been given.

I find it interesting that supposedly there has been almost 4 time more polling activity (national & state-by-state) during October of this election than was done for the entire 2004 election. This may serve to represent some of the “information overload” that seems to be occurring. Amazingly, this race has largely devolved (mostly for all except the candidates themselves) into competing arguments almost daily discounting one poll based on the results of another. It seems that the only foundation required of any poll is that it appears to justify what was the bias and intended outcome of the one touting it as “evidence”.

Maybe this is a natural outcome of an environment when the margins between the two major competing schools of though are apparently so razor thin, but it would seem that this would be an environment only profitable to the pollsters themselves.

Hmmm…I was having trouble with the logic of tolerance and the conservative pariah of “guvmint handouts”.

And then it came to me.

Tolerance is a code word for not being racist.

So, citizen, is (1) thinking Obama will get elected because of black people depite them only being about 18% of the population, and (2) doesn’t realize that most people on welfare are white.

Saxby Chambliss certainly knows what he has to do to win the Georgia senate race. He’s got to pit white against black. He’s seen the rush to the polls by African Americans in Georgia’s early voting:

The Republican is outwardly confident, but there’s urgency in his voice as he tours North Georgia, trying to boost turnout in his predominately white base: “The other folks are voting,” he bluntly tells supporters.

The other folks are voting. I wonder what he means by that?

LordHelpyou grow a brain,

The R’s being in control has been the only thing that has kept us from being there already. Bush has been a fiscal liberal for the past 8 years giving you libs most anything you wanted and you still whine about him. THAT is why his approval numbers are as low as they are. McCain hasn’t been much better, but the alternative, a socialist thru and thru, is a disaster in the waiting. Especially with a D controlled congress. Talk about an unimpeded sprint to socialism…. Usain Bolt will be envious.

I liken what’s happend to this… Working out an agreement with liberals that they can live with means meeting them at 60/40 their way. And with that philosophy, we’ve shifted the “center” so far left we’re now bickering over how excessive the social program will be instead of whether or not we should do it in the first place.

Of the 9 supreme court justices, 7 were appointed by R’s and 2 by D’s. Yet the court appears balanced when you constantly get 5/4 votes on things like gun laws. Guess where the 2 appointed by D’s fall. So far left you can’t even see them from the center with the Hubble telescope.

What makes you think any future justices appointed by D’s will be any better than the 2 on the bench now? Especially with a bulletproof congress. And considering their past record of selecting far left nut cases.

Kinda like you libs who think it has to be science or religion, but the 2 can’t exist together.

Let me try to make this clear for you, but with BDS, it may not be possible.

I, like many conservatives I know, am not happy with Bush’s fiscal policy. I’m not happy with spending deficits, the size of government, etc. I did vote for Bush twice because to vote for Gore or Kerry would be far worse (more spending on more programs). Why is this concept so daggone difficult for you liberals to understand?

At some point, you liberals have to come to grips with the reality you can’t keep fleecing companies and rich people to pay for everything you want in life under the guise of “fairness”. It’s not about fairness, it’s about GREED. And It just won’t work.

I asked you before, since you and the Corp. seem convinced this nation is going to heck in a handbasket…why do you blame the Democrats?

It simply does not stir the kool-aid (that means it does not add up…).

I believe the period in our country b/ 1992 and 2000 put this country on the RIGHT track, fiscally and with competence governing.

As you say about Bush, Clinton disappointed me on a number of things, but, overall he was an outstanding President and history will judge him as such.

Truthman: again, if you go look at the numbers, they included social security revenues, which everyone claims is a separate off-budget program, so you can’t claim revenue from that helped eliminate the “budget deficit”. You can’t have that one both ways. Either it’s on-budget (which it’s not) or the revenues from it aren’t counted.

They were about $50B in the hole that last year, if I remember right. I did the research into this a while back, so I’m pulling the number our of the air. Wasn’t a surplus if you take out SS revenues and expenditures.

You can get the numbers at the Federal Deficit site that’s part of the Treasury Dept.

That “surplus” of SS funds is supposed to fund retirements in the future, but instead it’s being used to fund war and ethanol now. Damn shame.

Nice Dodge on the question of GOP control of our govt for most of the last couple of decades, RB, you still did not answer the question about why you blame the Democrats.

Newt, huh? I think Newt put the GOP on its self desctuctive path. His (now comical) righteous indignation at Clinton’s moral shortcomings…He also left the ‘Contract with America’ hanging. His fellow GOPers threw him under the bus when he became a liability (like a bad habit, huh?)

Why do you think he didn’t run? He seems ambitious. Do you think he would be a viable candidate?

I wonder why he wasn’t even one of the candidates for VP…

Newt isn’t electable among conservatives because of his infidelity. It’a problem for me too, but I’d rather have him in there actually fixing problems than the cast of characters we have to chose from. If I’m forced to make a “lesser of the evils” pick anyway, why not one that might actually accomplish something.

Clinton’s success started with Reagan’s correction of Carter’s failure. It continued to ride the dot.com bubble until it burst. No fault of Clinton’s but his success was artificially inflated by that. The economy was declining when Bush took office and the “surplus” would have disappeared REGARDLESS of who won in 2000. Then 9/11 threw it a major curveball. As many have noted, the economy prior to this housing and mortgage collapse was doing quite well. Even with the doom and gloom the libs have been projecting for Bush’s entire term.

The problem is the handout crowd. That segment of this society has been growing and may now have the votes to win. Look at what the average Obama voter knows about his platform. He’s going to take money from rich people and give it to me. Watch the interviews. He’s going to give me free healthcare. He’s going to give me a laundry list about 15 miles long of “free” stuff. Obama doesn’t even hide the fact he’s planning to pay for all this “stuff” by taking money from rich people. He doesn’t care because he knows the 5% can’t outvote the 95%.

That, my friends, is socialism. And Obama and the Democrats are the ones who are leading the charge to it. That’s the problem.

Looks as if Elizabeth Dole has kicked backwards and nailed herself in the butskins, with that little ad mimicking Kay Hagan’s voice stating there is no God.

Hopefully Kay Hagan, who is active in her church, will give that pompus Dole a real kick in the bloomers and send her packing come Nov. 4.

“What I’m suggesting — there’s an increased potential for conflict,” McConnell said in a speech Thursday to intelligence professionals in Nashville, Tennessee. Conditions for “large casualty terrorist attacks using chemical, biological, or less likely, nuclear materials” also will increase during that period, he said.-Breitbart

Is socialism too strong a word? Consider one of its definitions from dictionary.com and tell me it is something other than Mr. Obama’s economic philosophy: “A theory or system of social reform which contemplates a complete reconstruction of society, with a more just and equitable distribution of property and labor.”

RB, there are fruitcakes all over the world. Rightwing fruitcakes, leftwing, rich, poor, you name it.

The ‘handout’ crowd, as you call them, are a small minority of the citizens of this country.

This line of thought seems to dominate a lot of peoples views (including my wife and a lot of the people I live and work around).

I am not worried that the ‘handout’ crowd will get something they don’t deserve as much as I am worried about the competent management of this Country (all facets).

There is no perfect way and, Lord knows, Dems and GOPers have plenty of dorks to go around.

Obama will not be perfect either, but he is not a socialist (deep down I think you know this) and he is not a radical. He will govern much more conservatively than you and others fear.

Earlier, you and the Corp were sounding apocolyptic for crying out loud.

Have some faith in this Country. Obama will govern more competently than George Bush, I have no doubt.

Usually, the “undecideds” who show up in polling break pretty evenly when both candidates are well known. This year’s “undecideds” are generally older, more rural, voted for Bush over Kerry, and they are concerned about Obama’s inexperience and liberal views. The undecideds will break toward John McCain.-WaPo

Sounds to me like they are going to need a lot more than fake polls and the Geobbels Propaganda Ministry/ Pinko Media Lie Machine, let’s see what Oblahma thinks:

WASHINGTON (CNN) — With just days to go before Election Day, Sen. Barack Obama is warning his supporters that things are going to get unpleasant fast — and that the race will come down to every last vote.

I’m wondering what the statement “everybody” is going to pay higher taxes” means.

“When democrats get in, they always raise taxes. I make well over $250,000 and I’ve always paid lots more in taxes than everybody else.” (to paraphrase Whoopi Goldberg)

So is Whoopi smarter than the average dem voter or is it just that she can afford to be smarter……..

than the average dem voter?

She did say that “no matter who wins, EVERYBODY’S taxes are going up. It’s the American way.”

After a conversation with a friend this evening about how Bush may have stole his elections via computer manipulation of the votes, this claim from the McCain camp about Iowa and their “internal polls” scares me to death. I have my doubts mainly because I don’t want to believe it. I do believe there were some successful voter suppression efforts that may have decided those elections. I am terrified to believe they could make any number they want show up by playing with the computers … that even when the election isn’t close that the GOP can actually steal it. But this talk from McCain claiming ALL the public polls are wrong while his secret polls tell a different story makes my worry if MAYBE he’s offering a narrative to make what won’t make sense seem like it does make sense. And then there’s the sideshow-like prediction of how the tallying will go late into the night in a close result that he’ll win that McCain made earlier this week. I’m hoping this is all just a Halloween scary made up story that won’t turn out to be true; but I’m scared. If McCain wins, I’ll have serious doubts that the USA is still a democracy.

Once again, the media has failed. Today’s “news” reveals that Obama’s aunt has 1) not only been living in this country illegally for FOUR years, but 2) also has been illegally contributing to Barry’s campaign.

Why wasn’t this news FOUR years ago??? By coming up now, it’s too late for people to consider in the election. This would be far more damaging than Palin’s unwed pregnant daughter.

Bottom Line: The Fourth Estate is a pitiful remnant of what it once was decades ago.

The Retardicans and Democraps are despicable, sub-human primates who need to be imprisoned for treason.

Our beautiful soon to be Vice President Sarah Palin is the best future leader for this nation, not Senator Barak Obama. Our beautiful soon to be Vice President Sarah Palin is also would be better at leading our nation in the future after a McCain Presidency than Senator Barak Obama would be in leading our nation in the future starting in January 2009. There are great reasons our soon to be Vice President Sarah Palin would be a better future leader than Senator Barak Obama. The greatest reason for our soon to be Vice President Sarah Palin’s is ideology. Our soon to be Vice President Sarah Palin is conservative in that she is pro life, marriage, guns, low taxes, low government spending, small government, unintrosive government, traditional and judeo Christian values, Bible reading and prayer in our public schools, and military spending. She is also pro free and private enterprize. Senator Barak Obama is a liberal who is anti every thing that I have described that our soon to be Vice President Sarah Palin is pro about or for. A second reason that our soon to be Vice President Sarah Palin is superior is because of experience. As a governor she has two years of executive administrative governing experience that Senator Barak Obama does not have. A final reason that our soon to be Vice President Sarah Palin is superior is because of political accomplishments. When our soon to be Vice President Sarah Palin came to office she accomplished 3 major things which are as follows: she showed great leadership in the 3 following areas: government reform, the state budget and the economy, and wise use of natural resources. She reformed government by standing up to the big oil companies by breaking up the monopoly on power and resources. She insisted on competition and basic fairness which ended the control that the oil companies had on the state, and thereby returning control of the state back to the people. She also stood up to the special interest and lobbyist, and produced major ethics reform. She lead well in the state budget by generating a surplus which came about by vetoing a half billion dollars of wasteful spending, ending the abuses of earmark spending by congress, and by getting rid of the private jet, the chef, and the chuffer. Economically under her leadership she brought about the largest private-sector infrastructure project in North American history. She also suspended the state fuel tax, and when oil and gas prices went up dramatically, and filled up the state treasury, she sent a large share of that revenue back where it belonged - directly to the people of Alaska . On natural resources she has shown great leadership by beginning a nearly forty billion dollar natural gas pipeline to help lead America to energy independence. When the last section of the pipeline is laid and its valves are opened, will lead America one step farther away from dependence on dangerous foreign powers that do not have our interests at heart. Senator Barak Obama has done nothing, so please vote John McCain for President and give to our beautiful soon to be Vice President Sarah Palin the opportunity that she deserves leading the nation into the future after a John McCain presidency. When our soon to be Vice President does lead the nation as President after a John McCain presidency, she will be the greatest President that we have ever had. Finally she is smarter than Senator Barak Obama

Thank You

John Warren
