Getting a Handel on long voting lines
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
A friend of mine just called — he and his wife spent five and a half hours waiting to vote on North Roswell Road.
Yesterday, my wife spent four hours waiting at the Fulton County Courthouse. I’m just hoping that all this makes it easier when I try to vote Tuesday.
Down in Florida, long lines earlier in the week shrank considerably after Gov. Charlie Crist ordered longer polling hours and weekend voting. He took some heat from fellow Republicans for doing so, under the theory that allowing more votes is better for Democrats. But he did the right thing. In North Carolina, the Board of Elections also voted Thursday to give local counties the option of staying open longer to ease the crunch, and many are doing so.
Not here in Georgia. Secretary of State Karen Handel refuses to try to extend voting hours, claiming in part that her hands are bound by Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, which requires federal pre-approval of changes in voting procedure. However, that didn’t seem to be a problem in North Carolina, where 40 counties are also bound under Section 5.
Handel also lost an important and embarrassing case this week in the Georgia Supreme Court. Two judges had already ruled that Handel was wrong to try to bar Jim Powell, a Democrat, from running for the Public Service Commission. Both judges had ruled that Powell easily met state residency requirements, but Handel insisted on appealing those rulings even after the ballots had been sent out and early voting had begun.
After I wrote a column taking Powell’s side and urging Handel to accept the lower courts’ decisions, she wrote a scorching letter to the editor. My column “raises the bar for illogical and absurd analysis,” she wrote, claiming that I wanted her to “apply the law based on some policy or political goal rather than what the law actually says.”
No, I just wanted the law applied as the judges had seen it. I wanted the voters of Georgia, not Handel, to decide Powell’s fate.
On Thursday, the Supreme Court kept Powell on the ballot. Citing many of the same arguments that Handel had called “illogical and absurd,” the court ruled that it was Handel who misunderstood and misapplied the law.
Did I mention their ruling was unanimous?
I used to think a lot of Handel. Back in her days on the Fulton County Commission, she seemed a center of calm, sanity and independence in a crazy public body. I had hopes that if she advanced into state politics she would be a Republican I could support, much in the fashion of Johnny Isakson. In fact, the AJC editorial board endorsed her for secretary of state two years ago, with words that now seem ironic:
“Handel understands the greatest threat is not voter fraud, but voter indifference; she says one approach to changing that could be a motivational campaign that would make failing to vote as unacceptable as littering. She also emphasizes that voting is not a privilege, as some in her party contend, but a right.”
OK, so we we’re wrong.
Earlier this week, polling places around the metro area were reporting long delays because state election computers had crashed. Those computers are Handel’s responsibility, and she insisted that those crashes never happened. Reports to the contrary were consistent and widespread, however.
It’ll be interesting to see what if any effect these long lines and delays have on Handel’s political future. She has been surprisingly partisan as an elections officer, but a lot of those folks waiting in long lines are Republicans as well as Democrats.

That way the deceased, illegal aliens, and Mickey Mouse can exercise their “right”. Yes they can!

I’m a White, Southern Baptist Republican. I just spent 5 hours 20 minutes standing in line at George Pierce Park in Gwinnett to vote for Barack Obama and to vote out Saxby Chambliss. The tipping point for me was the fear-mongering, negative campaigning from the GOP. Enough is enough. Throw the bums out!!!

Jay,
Here are two possibilities with this Powell issue: 1) Handel just plain went off the deep end or 2) Her Masters told her what they expected her to do and she did it.
I tend to lean toward the second item as I do with Saxby and his attack on the guy from Imperial Sugar. They were both given their marching orders by those that they have sold their souls to. They are not leaders. They follow their masters around like well-trained little puppy dogs. They are both disgusting little people.

Just remember though, it’s only “voter fraud” when the Republicans win.
Remember ‘06? The Dems had lawyers standing by to investigate fraud and watch over the process.
Then when the Dems ended up winning, the lawyers and any concern about “rigged elections” disappeared in a puff of smoke.
Since its been proven that thousands upon thousands of illegal voter registrations exist, the GOP is suddenly “suppressing votes”.
Um yes, if we have cases of Mickey Mouse and people who have been dead for 80 years, those votes DO need to be suppressed.

I used to think highly of Handel myself until recently. If she is deliberating stifling the voting process for partisan reasons, then she ought to be reprimanded accordingly. It is unacceptable.
The reason fellow Repugs used to chastize Gov. Crist for his common-sense approach to ease the delays in FL speaks volumes for itself !
Karen, we will remembber this, both democrats and repugs!! It’s a matter time !!!

1)the majority of voter fraud comes from mail in ballots, you know the ones the repugs didn’t seem to want to substantiate?
2)mickey mouse registered to vote — he can’t vote in ga. or fla wihout an i.d. nice try bringing it up as “voter fraud” though.
3)the only halfway decent repiglican was McCain — notice the “was”. ever since he was swiftboated in the 2000 election by his own party, (the infamous “black child” propaganda — anyone notice that no one has seen his adoptive daughter on the podium with him this time around?); since south carolina’s repiglican back stabbing, McCain has been dancing on the strings like a repiglican marrionette.

Article in the AJC today stating that police officers would be needed at polling places throughout the city during election day. Why? Are we to believe that we need police to monitor elections and to keep order? Are we not able to elect a president without civil disorder? If the Annointed One wins, we should expect some celebrations from the black community. If he loses, then should we expect civil disorder, burning and looting and expressing your displeasure at the result? Why is this not right?

One thing is crystal clear now. GOP supporters don’t like paying taxes at all.
I suggest we stop asking them to pay taxes.
We will pull all fire dept support and police protection from their neighborhoods. We will take away their library cards. Next, we can determine where they eat out and we can pull all health department inspectors from those locations.
What else? Let’s see… Who pays for the vote workers? Is that paid for with tax dollars? They can’t vote anymore either I guess. (ohoh, I like this idea!)

Midori,
It went pretty smooth where we voted as well. My son and his friend were funny, they were very enthusiastic about talking out loud who they were voting for. I told them that wasn’t too kosher to do. We decided it would have been nice to have a band there - music, some snacks, you know, make it a real party!
There were just soooooo many people. It’s good to see people excited in an election again.
I live a block from my actual voting precinct. I really dread Tuesday - if the turnout trend equals that of the early voters, we’ll be gridlocked.

The current Repug voters are saturated with mostly the uneducated, or school drop-outs at best. Specimen A — Sean Hannity and his followers. They have been brainwashed to consider education as “elitism” and therefore, easily fallen prey to the fear-mongering of the GOP.
These same idiots voted for GW Bush twice, and will still vote for him again if he qualified to run despite his abyssmal performance in office.
Voters gave the Repugs a chance in the White House, and they ran this country to the ground with massive deficits, corruption, endless expensive wars, a dismal economy, dwindling middle-class, outsourcing of jobs, huge tax breaks for corrupt companies, among others. How on earth these idiots continue to support the Repugs amazes me !!

Get out the vote, the Repug vote:
Proposition 8 places into the California Constitution the same language that voters already passed by 61% of the vote in 2000. This is necessary to overturn an outrageous California Supreme Court decision that overturned Proposition 22.
Proposition 8 is simple and straightforward. It contains the same 14 words that were previously approved in 2000 by over 61% of California voters: “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”
Because four activist judges in San Francisco wrongly overturned the people’s vote, we need to pass this measure as a constitutional amendment to restore the definition of marriage as between a man and a woman.

Fulton, Cobb, Clayton cops gear up for Election Day Unrest, rowdy celebrations possible Tuesday night
By CHRISTIAN BOONE The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Friday, October 31, 2008
Though they’d rather not discuss it, local law enforcement agencies are planning for possible civil unrest after Tuesday’s election.
“We have no intelligence indicating there will be problems,” said Fulton County Assistant Police Chief Gary Stiles. “Law enforcement must deal with ‘what ifs’ and worst-case scenarios” …………………………….. Similar preparations are underway across the country, fueled partly by Internet rumors and crystallized within recent comments by Democratic strategist James Carville on CNN.
“But you stop and contemplate this country if [Barack] Obama goes in and he has a consistent five point lead and loses the election, it would be very, very, very dramatic out there,” he said.

The Demo-rats must hold onto the myth of the racist republican for several reasons.
They cannot logically or factually argue against capitalism, so they cry racism.
They cannot logically or factually argue against low taxes, so they cry racism.
They cannot logically or factually argue against fighting terrorism, so they cry racism.
They cannot logically or factually argue against small government, so they cry racism.
Most people wise up after too many episodes of “the libs that cried wolf”, thus negating the effects of the racism charge.

Once again, dimwits. If Obama loses because racists won’t vote for him, it will be RACIST DEMOCRATS who make the difference, not Republicans. R’s aren’t going to vote for a socialist no matter what color he/she is. Look within, dems, look within.

Mrs. Handel
I read your opposing view column in the AJC earlier this week. You first claimed that politics had nothing to do with your decision. But then you callously insinuated that if it was the Republicans who would stand to benefit by extending voting hours, the outcry would…well…you said you’d leave it to our imaginations.
Well, let me tell YOU what I imagine, Karen Handel: I imagine that politics were the ONLY consideration that you have processed in denying the extension of the voting hours - YOUR politics. If you can’t win fair and square, then cheat cheat cheat to win one for the home team. Like Katherine Harris in 2000. Probably your hero of heroes.
Good-bye Karen Handel. You’ve left your mark on the most important election of our times…the mark of party politics over the American privilege to vote. A mark that should shame you.

Off Topic, sorry:
I came to this blog because I got sick of lefty blogs. Lefties hated me because I wasn’t “left” enough. Righties hated me because I believe in the Constitution.
I think of myself as a centerist. Problem is, the “center” has gone way right in the last decade. So, I’m left being a leftist, I guess.
I’m an old fart, a Vietnam veteran, a small business owner (a freelance writer, so the biz is me). I’m not likely to call an aromatherapist in an emergency.
I’ve read Jay’s columns for a long time. more often than not, I agree with his point of view. I don’t see his point of view as extreme. He’s pretty rational. Pretty moderate. Your mileage may differ.
But, I read the comments and wonder. Post after post, thread after thread, there seems nothing but knee-jerk name-calling. No discourse. No real thought. No empathy. In fact, no quarter asked, requested, or even considered.
In the endless foodfight we talk right past issues that matter to each of us.
All of us are affected in some way by the American way of health care. None of us are served very well by it, I don’t think. Instead of railing about “socialized medicine,” is it possible that thoughtful commenters — left and right and in the middle — could discuss that issue? Just that issue, and a solution? Without political baggage?
What are “our” problems — not the problems of the doctors, pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies — just our problems. Coverage. Being able to know we or our kids or parents could get medical care without being financially broken.
To me, that’s a question that transcends politics, party lines. Forget politics. Lefties and righties get sick, suffer, go broke and die.
Is there some point at which we can stop arguing and start thinking?

People who think socialism is the greatest evil since Hitler should really stick with quoting the Old “eye for an eye” Testament. Jesus said, “whatsoever you do unto the lowest among you, you do so unto me.” So it would seem that, yes, you are your brother’s keeper. That sounds like socialism to me, and I think someone owes Jesus an apology.

Good luck sir. I’ve been trying to squelch the name calling vitriol for months. I’m afraid you’re wishing for the impossible. The mentality for civil debate is just not there.
As I have said before, as a student of the Civil War, I could never grasp how sentiments could have gotten so bad that Americans would actually quit talking and go to war against each other.
I’m beginning now to understand how that happened ………..

Your wallet and mine are already being raided, NRB. That’s my point. Let’s skip the politics of what “Democrats know how to do.” Republicans have been in power for several years, Democrats before them, but medical expenses keep rising.
I’m insured. I’m not on the dole. And the cost of health care is going up. My 24 year-old son has no medical insurance. We can’t add him to our policy, and the jobs he has had don’t offer coverage. He’s not a deadbeat. He works his butt off. And he can’t get health care coverage.
You don’t see anything wrong with that? Is that a matter unworthy of “bipartisan” discussion?

To Greg Mendel, that was a beautiful post and I couldn’t agree more. Polarization and extremism is going to tear this country apart. People forget, “united we stand, divided we fall.” And, remember that old song, “battle lines being drawn, nobody’s right if everybody’s wrong…” I’ve been thinking about that song a lot lately. I don’t know why it has to be this way but I have given up on it changing. It will be the destruction of our great experiment in democracy. Maybe that’s what happened to the Greek and Roman experiment in democracy.

Frankly — and simply — people talk to each other by…talking to each other. If the lot of us were faced with a common problem (which we are), we’d figure a way out. In fact, we would depend on each other. Health care is, I would say, a common problem.

Regarding health care, a high deductible health insurance is all a 24 year old needs.
Yes he’d have to pay out of pocket for any yearly physical exam, and for any potential medication, but he would be insured against a very expensive catastrophe.
Think about it like homeowners insurance. You don’t go calling up the insurance company every time a window breaks, or you need to replace a broken gutter. You call when the crap hits the fan. Same concept.
A 24 year old can afford high deductible health insurance as long as all his money isnt being spent on cell phone usage, satellite TV, and video games.
If that concept fails, then how about all you generous Democrats band together and form a liberal health insurance company. You can all pitch in your money, since you’re so generous and caring, and give out cheap health insurance to anyone who wants it…no pre screening required!
Let me know how long THAT lasts.

Thanks for your advice. You make it sound so simple, so affordable. Obviously you’ve never actually tried to get private insurance for a 24 year-old. I have.
Try this: Go to your nearest Rolls Royce dealership, and ask them to sell you a Phantom for $25,000. Demand it!
And when they won’t sell it to you for that price, carp about Democrats and deadbeats. That will help. Really. Be sure to tell them you are a Republican, not a Democrat. You’re not a deadbeat. They’ll listen. I assure you.
Seriously, NRB, you’d rather drag out your talking points than actually deal with a problem that both Democrats and Republicans face. Does the name Pavlov ring a bell?

Some two-thirds of the US economy is based on consumption. That’s…significant.
Over the last 25 years, more and more “wealth” has accreted upwards, into the pockets of those who have reached a functional limit of consumption. This wealth, rather than re-circulating into the consumer economy, is tied up in various investments – stocks, bonds, convertibles, derivatives, etc. The wealth generated by these investments tends to be re-invested in similar instruments, rather than “trickling down” as supply-side economic theory suggests. Now, the popular economic wisdom (recently called into question by Greenspan himself) suggests that this reinvestment will result in capital investment by corporations that leads to job creation that leads to middle-class CONSUMPTION income. This is not the case. Instead of being re-invested, this accretion of wealth has resulted in a cycle in which the returns from said investments are re-invested in similar instruments, creating a system in which money deposited at the top remains at the top, and engenders even more wealth (transfers) at the top, at the expense of the middle and the bottom. Slowly, over this period, the normal distribution curve has skewed dramatically to the right. Now, imagine the logical result of this pattern. If consumption is the primary driver of the economy – and it is – when the consumptive ability of the primary spending class – the middle class – is drained more and more – what do you think will happen to the US economy? What good, do you think, will be the economically-stagnant billions of the top 1% when the economy built upon the consumption of the masses falls apart, because those masses no longer have discretionary income to spend? What good will self-righteous and barely-informed protestations of “Socialist!” and “Communist!” do us then, when the basic foundation of our economy has been uprooted by the very greed that led the fairy-tale farmer to slaughter his golden egg-laying goose?

“All right guys, that’s enough,” said Obama, wearing a casual outfit and sunglasses in the early evening.
“You got a shot,” he told the photographers. “Leave us alone. Come on, guys.”
Obama then crossed the street with Sasha. At least one video cameraman who was not part of Obama’s traveling press corps followed him for a while. Obama grew visibly irritated.
He and his daughter then began jogging, and even running, to get away from the media.
This, my friends, is the perfect example of what an Oblahma presidency would be like, hahahaha.
Just replace photographers with liberal democrat congressmen, “alright, guys, you got enough,” followed by Oblahma running away in fear of his life.

Why I Can’t Vote For Obama By Huntley Brown
Dear Friends, A few months ago I was asked for my perspective on Obama, I sent out an e-mail with a few points. With the election just around the corner I decided to complete my perspective. Those of you on my e-list have seen some of this before but its worth repeating..
First I must say who ever wins the election will have my prayer support. Obama needs to be commended for his accomplishments but I need to explain why I will not be voting for him.
Many of my friends process their identity through their blackness.
I process my identity through Christ. Being a Christian (a Christ follower) means he leads I follow. I can’t dictate the terms he does because he is the leader.
I can’t vote black because I am black I have to vote Christian because that’s who I am. Christian first black second. Neither should anyone from the other ethnic groups vote because of ethnicity. 200 years from now I wont be asked if I was black or white. I will be asked if I know Jesus and accepted him as Lord and savior.
In an election there are many issues to consider but when a society gets abortion, same-sex marriage, embryonic stem-cell research, human cloning to name a few wrong economic concerns will soon not matter.
We need to follow Martin Luther King’s words don’t judge someone by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I don’t know Obama so all I can go off is his voting record.
His voting record earned him the title of the most liberal senator in the US Senate in 2007.
NATIONAL JOURNAL: Obama: Most Liberal Senator in 2007 (01/31/2008)
To beat Ted Kennedy and Hilary Clinton as the most liberal senator, takes some doing. Obama accomplished this feat in 2 short years. I wonder what would happen to America if he had four years to work with.
There is a reason planned parenthood gives him a 100 % ratings. There is a reason the homosexual community supports him. There is a reason Ahmadinejad, Chavez, Castro, Hamas etc loves him. There is a reason he said he would nominate liberal judges to the supreme court. There is a reason he voted against the infanticide bill. There is a reason he voted No on the constitutional ban of same-sex marriage. There is a reason he voted no on partial birth abortion. There is a reason he voted no on confirming Justices Roberts and Alito. These two judges are conservatives and they have since overturned partial birth abortion. The same practice Obama wanted to continue.
Lets take a look at the practice he wanted to continue.
The 5 Step Partial Birth Abortion procedure A. Guided by ultrasound, the abortionist grabs the baby’s leg with forceps. (Remember this is a live baby) B. The baby’s leg is pulled out into the birth canal. C. The abortionist delivers the baby’s entire body, except for the head. D. The abortionist jams scissors into the baby’s skull. The scissors are then opened to enlarge the hole. E. The scissors are removed and a suction catheter is inserted. The child’s brains are sucked out, causing the skull to collapse. The dead baby is then removed. God help him.
There is a reason Obama opposed the parent notification law.
Think about this you can’t give a kid an aspirin without parental notification but that same kid can have an abortion without parental notification. This is insane.
There is a reason he went to Jeremiah Wright’s church for 20 years.
Obama tells us he has good judgement but he sat under Jeremiah Wright teaching for 20 years. Now he is condemning Wrights sermons. I wonder why now?
Obama said Jeremiah Wright led him to the Lord and discipled him. A disciple is one in training. Jesus told us in Matthew 28 v 19 - 20 Go and make disciples of all nations. This means reproduce yourself. Teach people to think like you, walk like you, talk like you believe what you believe etc. The question I have is what did Jeremiah Wright teach him?
Would you support a White President who went to a church which has tenants that said they have a
Just change the word from white to black and you have the tennants of Obamas former church. If President Bush was a member of a church like this, he would be called a racist. Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton would have been marching outside.
This kind of church is a racist church. Obama did not wake up after 20 years and just discovered he went to a racist church. The church can’t be about race. Jesus did not come for any particular race. He came for the whole world.
A church can’t have a value system based on race. The churches value system has to be based on biblical mandate. It does not matter if its a white church or a black church its still wrong. Anyone from either race that attends a church like this would never get my vote.
Obama’s former Pastor Jeremiah Wright is a disciple of liberal theologian James Cone, author of the 1970 book A Black Theology of Liberation. Cone once wrote: “Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him.
Cone is the man Obama’s mentor looks up to. Does Obama believe this?
So what does all this mean for the nation?
In the past when the Lord brought someone with the beliefs of Obama to lead a nation it meant one thing judgement.
Read 1 Samuel 8. When Israel asked for a king. First God says 1 Samuel 8 v 9 Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will do.”
Then God says 1 Samuel 8 v 18 When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, and the LORD will not answer you in that day.” 19 But the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want a king over us. 20 Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.” 21 When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated it before the LORD. 22 The LORD answered, “Listen to them and give them a king.”
Here is what we know for sure
God is not schizophrenic
He would not tell one person to vote for Obama and one to vote for McCain. As the scripture says a city divided against itself cannot stand, so obviously many people are not hearing from God.
Maybe I am the one not hearing but I know God does not change and Obama contradicts many things I read in scripture so I doubt it.
For all my friends who are voting for Obama can you really look God in the face and say Father based on your word, I am voting for Obama even though I know he will continue the genocidal practice of partial birth abortion.
He might have to nominate three or four supreme court justices, and I am sure he will be nominating liberal judges who will be making laws that are against you.
I also know he will continue to push for homosexual rights, even though you destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for this.I know I can look the other way because of the economy.
I could not see Jesus agreeing with many of Obama’s positions. Finally I have two questions for all my liberal friends.
Since we know someone’s value system has to be placed on the nation,
1 Whose value system should be placed on the nation.
2 Who should determine that this is the right value system for the nation?
Blessings, Huntley Brown

I mean, do you see any stories about black supremacist groups trying to kill McCain? Do you see any stories about black folks hanging McCain’s likeness from a tree? You extremist religious whack-jobs like jay @ 7:54 are the reason that the Republican Party is so broken today. You condone pre-emptive WAR and all its atrocities against human life and then try to make a righteous stance against what you call “partial-birth abortion”… it’s a very rare medical procedure that has clouded your very brain. Get real, why dontcha?
I believed Jesus when I learned in Sunday school that He said, “JUDGE NOT, lest ye be judged.” Barack Obama gets votes from many Christians due to his voting record for the needy among us, just like Jesus preached in his day… and Obama doesn’t promote pre-emptive WAR against living human beings, like John McAngry does. McAngry goes around singing “Bomb, bomb, bomb Iran!” like that’s somehow funny.
So, Take your religious, Bible-thumping BS and shove it — because you’re just UGLY and anti-Christian.

I used to get upset also when reading some of the racist crap on these blogs. You should not worry as the comments are intended to create conversation and discord. Racism is as American as apple pie and it will never end in our life time. The only consolation is that not all white people are racist.
