Time to put down your predictions…
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
OK folks, step up and put your marker down. Who’s gonna win, and by how much? Let’s see what your thinking.
Your post should contain two things. First, predict the winner’s electoral vote count. For example, McCain 276, or Obama 311.
Then, in case of a tie, we’ll use the winner’s popular vote total to decide the matter, to the tenth of a percent. For example, McCain 50.2 percent, or Obama 52.7 percent.
Deadline to post your entry will be Saturday at noon. All entries must be posted on this thread, so I don’t have to go searching through the blog posts to find our winner.

“Bill Clinton mentioned four important criteria to judge a Presidential candidate:
Philosophy Obama: Centrist/Liberal. McCain: Depraved.
Policy Obama: Pragmatic/Futuristic McCain: Bush
Decision Obama: Right on Iraq, VP pick and the economy. McCain: Wrong, gimmicky, erratic, respectively
Execution: Neither has executive experience, but look at how each has executed their campaigns.
This is a good way to talk to the still (and amazingly) undecided voters on the phone ot in person.”

Looking at the electoral map, we know these things: 1) Obama will take all of the Kerry states, period; 2) Obama will also take Iowa and New Mexico; 3) Obama has relatively large and seemingly insurmountable leads (7-10%) in Virginia and Colorado. That would produce a total of 286 electoral votes, even if McCain were to win Ohio, Florida, Missouri, North Carolina, Indiana, and Nevada, which is HIGHLY unlikely given that Obama is leading or tied in all of them. Throw in Montana, North Dakota, and Georgia, which are essentially tied just for good measure. Zogby shows the race at Obama +7 today. But even when polls were tightening, McCain was gaining ground only in states that he couldn’t win, like California, and ones he already had, like Idaho. None of the states I’ve previously mentioned have moved, unless it was in Obama’s favor.
I say Obama wins all the Kerry states, plus Virginia, Colorado, Nevada, and Ohio, which puts him at 338 electoral votes. That’s my pick although I think it will probably be higher.
Obama will take 52% of the national vote to McCain’s 45%.

The Oddball predicts:
Obama/Biden 311 in the electoral college. McCain concedes relatively early in the evening, and goes on national television to offer a surprisingly eloquent, gracious and sincere message of contratulations to the new President-elect. Palin gives a perfuctory statement to the press which was written by a staffer.
McCain/Palin takes Georgia with 50%, Obama/Biden 48% and Barr 2%. The turnout breaks all previous records.
Chambliss beats Martin with barely 50% of the vote.
Elsewhere, Republicans lose huge numbers of contested Senate and House seats.
No rioting takes place anywhere, though apolitical knuckleheads use the election as an excuse to misbehave in a few cities. The right wing media tries to use it as proof of the true nature of all “liberals,” but no one listens. Numerous claims of voting irregularity are made, only to fade away in the coming months. In January 2009, the Republic is still standing.
What happens after that, only God knows.

Only way she gets back to the race is by being selected. The GOP primary would send her back to Alaska weeping. Think the media is tough? A GOP primary swings a boot through her political house of cards.
More than likely, however, she is done. Her approval rating is terrible and she’s a total drag on the ticket. Charge up the base? Yes, but that’ll only get ‘em second place. No reason for a future nominee to gamble on an already failed gimick.

McCain funded Rashid Khalidi
John McCain has shot himself in the foot once again:
During the 1990s, while he served as chairman of the International Republican Institute (IRI), McCain distributed several grants to the Palestinian research center co-founded by Khalidi, including one worth half a million dollars.
A 1998 tax filing for the McCain-led group shows a $448,873 grant to Khalidi’s Center for Palestine Research and Studies for work in the West Bank. (See grant number 5180, “West Bank: CPRS” on page 14 of this PDF.)
The relationship extends back as far as 1993, when John McCain joined IRI as chairman in January. Foreign Affairs noted in September of that year that IRI had helped fund several extensive studies in Palestine run by Khalidi’s group, including over 30 public opinion polls and a study of “sociopolitical attitudes.” I think John McCain needs to prove that none of the money he steered to Rashid Khalidi was used to purchase weapons. I wonder how many Israelis were killed by John McCain’s donations to “PLO sympathizer” Rashid Khalidi.

McCain/Palin win via electoral vote while Obama/Biden take the popular vote. It will be close, along the lines of 271-274 McCain. I just hope that whoever wins, if it is close, realizes that the represent only half our nation. it kills me that so many on either side of the fence are more middle of the road, but the extremists, zealots and uber-lib/uber-conservs (a vast minority) are the ones running the show.

I predict McCain will win by a razor thin margin like Bush did in 2000. McCain will get 271/48% with Obama getting 267/52%. There are enough closet racists out there that, despite what they say publicly, will never vote for a black man to run their White, Anglo, Christian country. So they’ll hold their nose and vote for McCain hoping he doesn’t die or have a stroke in office. A larger percentage of the electorate still has not cast their ballot so all this speculation based on “early voting” is worthless.
McCain’s latest round of attack ads will be sufficient for these closet racists to justify not vote for Obama and McCain knows he’s giving them cover. That’s how dishonest these Rethuglicons have become. Supporting and enabling racists. Just look at how the Rethuglicons use labels. They refer to black males as ‘thugs,’ Muslims as ‘terrorists,’ and liberals as ‘socialists.’ So to Rethuglicons, that makes Obama a terrorist, socialist, thug. Who wants to vote for that person; it’s not because he’s black. And his wife is out to get whitey, too.
When you vote Rethuglicon, you vote against your own best interests. And McCain’s character attack ads providing cover to closet racists is living proof.

TW, Where did you see a poll on Sarah Palin? How could there be approval poll on a national scale? She hasn’t done anything, yet. Her approval rating in Alaska is over 80%. The highest in the Union. Jindal is a rising star and I do believe that after Obama Hussein has wrecked the country, Jindal will come out and level Hussein. I mean, this is going to be 1980 all over again. The ignorant voters of America, who let the media tell them who to vote for do not know what’s in store for them. Remember how Obama Hussein started out saying that he would only tax people who make over $250,000 a year? Well, since then, he’s lowered the tax plan THREE times. No one knows who this guy is. He’s never accomplished anything significant, he’s never lead anything or anyone, he’s never passed a significant bill, and he pals around with racists, terrorists and marxists. Good choice democrats. I mean, damn, I would have rather had Hillary in the White House than him.

ATTENTION ALL LIBERALS AND HACK OPINION COLUMNIST JAY BOOKMAN.
This may be the most interesting and telling piece you will read. Can anyone of you please explain this one? Al Quida wants Bush and the GOP humiliated on election day. HMMMMMMM…. Now who is going to humiliate the GOP? Oh, that’s right DEMOCRATS!!! Why does Al Quida support Barrack Hussien and the Democrat Party? Gee, I don’t know, could it be because the democrat party is the party of whiners, idiots, blow-hards, and…duh duh duh….PU$$IES!!!!!!!
Qaeda wants Republicans, Bush “humiliated”: Web video.
DUBAI (Reuters) - An al Qaeda leader has called for President George W. Bush and the Republicans to be “humiliated,” without endorsing any party in the upcoming U.S. presidential election, according to a video posted on the Internet.
“O God, humiliate Bush and his party, O Lord of the Worlds, degrade and defy him,” Abu Yahya al-Libi said at the end of sermon marking the Muslim feast of Eid al-Fitr, in a video posted on the Internet.
Libi, one of the top al Qaeda commanders believed to be living in Afghanistan or Pakistan, called for God’s wrath to be brought against Bush equating him with past tyrants in history.
The remarks were the first comments from a leading al Qaeda figure referring, albeit indirectly, to the U.S. elections. Muslim clerics often end sermons by calling on God to guide and support Muslims and help defeat their enemies.
In 2004 al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden issued his first video in more than a year just days before the elections to deride President Bush and warn of possible new September 11-style attacks.
Bin Laden made little mention of Bush’s Democratic challenger John Kerry, telling Americans: “Your security is not in the hands of Kerry or Bush or al Qaeda. Your security is in your own hands and each state which does not harm our security will remain safe.”

You only have to read the posts here to realize why Obama is going to win big. It’s hope and promise and opportunity vs. fear and hatred and venom. McCain and Caribou Barbie have pretty much locked down the 22% of the public who believe that W is doing a great job, but all these new voters aren’t standing in line for 2, 4 or even 6 hours to vote for the status quo. If the GOP wants to win this election, they better have a plan to steal it, because they are going to get crushed in the Electoral College as well as in the popular vote.

I wish there was an intelligence and maturity test for posters on this blog. Much of what I read is what I would expect of children in middle and high school, not adult members of this community.
I voted for Obama but I defend that based on his presence, steadiness and policy proposals. And when speaking of McCain I don’t attack him personally. I challenge his policy proposals or the lack thereof.
It appears that those opposed to Obama are focused on allegations around his “paling” around with a terrorist, being a terrorist himself, being a Muslim and being a socialist or marxist/communist.
None of these allegations is rooted in reality
(1) Relationship with William Ayers The facts are his relationship is hardly what I would call ‘paling” around. Paling around suggests a fairly intimate (not physical) relationship of frequent social interaction. There is no evidence of that level of involvement between the two.
(2) Even if it was established he was “paling” around with Ayers, what difference does it make? Ayers was a young man at a time of massive social, cultural and political upheaval in our nation’s history. I am not defending Ayers’ actions but suggest that this was 40 years ago and he has since established himself as a well-respected educator and member of his community. While I believe he should denounce his former actions he is not currently engaged in any activity that could remotely be considered terroristic. Further I believe in an America that lets justice run its course and a nation that allows individuals to be redeemed. And to round this out I strongly believe that Jesus would want us to embrace Ayers, not shun him and denigrate him.
(3) Assertions that Obama is a terrorist. No poster has presented any truth or fact to back this assertion. His life history has been scrutinized and no one can find past behavior that most Americans would equate with terrorism. Even if he was educated for a time at a school in Indonesia and even if that was a Muslim madras, there is no evidence the madras engaged in anti-american or terroristic materials. In fact this was in the late 60’s and early 70’s before the widespread fundamentalist movement. So this assertion is void.
(4) That he is a Muslim His father was a Muslim but he was raised by his Christian grandparents as a Christian. In fact the right wing has made much of Rev. Wright who was the pastor at Obama’s church for many years. You can’t have it both ways - asserting he is a Muslim and complaining about his pastor (who he has denounced). He is a Christian. But what if he was a Muslim? This nation was founded on the belief that people should be free to practice their faith and associate with their community of believes. Why would his being a Muslim raise an issue in this campaign.
I don’t deny that the terrorists of 9/11 and many attacks on our nation and national interests have been terrorized but I don’t believe that guilt by association to a particular race or religion is an American value.
(5) Socialist/Marxist/Communist This assertion is similar without basis. Obama said he believed in redistribution of the wealth in the context of righting the current tax policies of this nation. Every tax and spend policy of the government is a redistribution of the wealth. If we fund a road project in one state, that is redistributing the wealth from the other states to the one state. When we give tax cuts and credits to corporations that is redistribution from people to legal entities. All Obama suggested was that the redistribution that occurs in any tax/spend environment should benefit the middle class for a change.
He believes strongly in a capitalist economy but believes that those who make the most should pay more, that our trade policies should contain adequate protections for American workers and ensure that these countries have the same types of work rule, health and safety provisions as apply in American workplaces.
I’m afraid that the juvenile name-calling that I would expect of teenager has become the voice of the right wing electorate. And that frightens me and it should frighten everyone else.

I’ll stick with the race coming down to Virginia and we won’t have an answer on election night. If Obama manages pulls it off he’ll win 281-257, but if McCain holds the state he’ll win 270-268.
I’ll go with McCain/Palin 270-268, but Obama will win the popular vote 49.1 to 48.5. Then we’ll hear four more years of whining about the electoral college.
Note to Johnny Mac: If you want my prediction to come true you better have an army of poll watchers and lawyers crawling all over northern and eastern Virginia on election day and night. You need to remember that they wait for the rest of the state to count and see what they need. Webb was down about a quarter million votes at midnight and then Presto!

McCain: 295 - 50.1% Obama: 243 - 48.5%
The story of the election being Pennsylvania with the “tale of the tape” being the triple comments of “God & Guns - Disdain for people not like them”, “Racists”, and “Rednecks”.
The real fun will be the watching the shock and dismay of liberals who don’t understand what happens. Followed quickly by the bitterness and irrational squabbling from the kook fringe who will have wasted a half-billion dollars betting on the wrong horse.
As for the Georgia Senate race, Chamliss wins barely in a race that is much closer than it should have been. Democrats gain, but fail to get the 60 Senate seats that they need for filibuster-proof control.
With a Republican President and a Democratic House / Senate, gridlock continues as both attempt to placate their bases and roadblock the other side’s agenda. Both sides give after the election speeches talking about “bipartisanship” (largely defined as action on their agenda) while warning the American people of how they are protecting them from the other side.
The real Americans who drive the country and the economy wake up on November 5th & January 20th and go to work.
Oh yeah, Jay will post a thread that will get a number of supporting and opposing responses (Swami Dave’s being the most logical and rational).
Enjoy guys!
