Will ‘Country First’ extend past Nov. 4?

Robert Zoellick, a former deputy secretary of State in the Bush administration who is now president of the World Bank, makes an obvious but important point in today’s Washington Post: Our next president, whoever it is, faces so many important challenges in so many arenas that he has the potential to leave his mark as one of our greatest presidents ever, a “21st century FDR.”

Here’s a partial list of Zoellick’s to-do list:

“The new administration will need to recapitalize banks … helping homeowners manage their mortgage debts while staying in their homes … overhaul a failed financial regulatory and supervisory system … (champion) quality schools, basic health-care choices and worker assistance … immigration rules that let the United States attract talent and regenerate its spirit … reintroducing the United States to the world… modernizing multilateralism and markets … negotiate a new climate-change treaty … A successful wind-down in Iraq, a path of progress for Afghanistan and Pakistan, and a push for peace and development in the Middle East … the courage to stand up to the challenges of isolationism at home…

While some might be tempted to condemn aspects of that list as liberal and activist, Zoellick is a strong McCain supporter and was slated to serve as McCain’s top domestic and foreign policy campaign adviser until taking the World Bank job. He is often mentioned as a likely secretary of State should McCain win.

That daunting list also poses an unstated challenge to many on the right. John McCain today said he guaranteed that the race would tighten and that he would emerge victorious late into Election Night. The numbers continue to say otherwise. The numbers say this race is over and the only remaining question is how large the margin will be.

McCain and his backers have run on a slogan of “Country First,” country over politics. The sincerity of that claim is now likely to be tested in ways they will not like. Will they support a President Obama and back him when they can? Given the critical challenges we face, it is essential that the next president has a successful administration.

“Country First.” Is that a heartfelt sentiment or a cynical slogan?

We shall see.

UPDATE: I should have included this in the original post — my bad: If this campaign ends as it appears it will, a little humility and magnanimity on the part of the winning side will be important as well.

We shall see is right. There are so many right wing radicals who will hope against their own countries best interest if their man doesn’t win. Whoever becomes President, for all our sakes, will need the support of all citizens as long as their policies don’t hurt Americans at large.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Anchorage Daily News, Alaska’s largest newspaper, has endorsed Sen. Barack Obama for president.

The newspaper said Sunday the Democrat “brings far more promise to the office. In a time of grave economic crisis, he displays thoughtful analysis, enlists wise counsel and operates with a cool, steady hand.”

The Daily News said since the economic crisis has emerged, Republican presidential candidate John McCain has “stumbled and fumbled badly” in dealing with it.

“Of the two candidates, Sen. Obama better understands the mortgage meltdown’s root causes and has the judgment and intelligence to shape a solution, as well as the leadership to rally the country behind it,” the paper said.

The Daily News said Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has shown the country why she is a success as governor. But the paper said few would argue that Palin is truly ready to step into the job of being president despite her passion, charisma and strong work ethic.

“Gov. Palin’s nomination clearly alters the landscape for Alaskans as we survey this race for the presidency — but it does not overwhelm all other judgment. The election, after all is said and down, is not about Sarah Palin, and our sober view is that her running mate, Sen. John McCain, is the wrong choice for president at this critical time for our nation,” the paper said.

“Like picking Sen. McCain for president, putting her one 72-year-old heartbeat from the leadership of the free world is just too risky at this time,” the paper concluded.

“County First” is a cynical slogan. John McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin is evidence of that. Also, John McCain used to be a maverick, but he changed. He changed his positions so often to conform to the Republican base, he has put himself in a real hole. I suspect that had he picked Tom Ridge, we would see a much closer election today.

No politician can win just with his/her base. McCain needed independents and peel away conservative democratic voters to win this election. He has done neither. Obama was smart to move to the center after the Democratic Primary, assuring himself a good share of the independent vote, and sliced away liberal Republicans who have watched in dismay the direction their party has taken.

If Sarah Palin wins the Republican nomination in 2012, the result will be another landslide loss. As a Obama supporter, I would naturally encourage her to run.

Maybe I’m wrong and the Republican Party will learn from its mistakes. The Democrats certainly learned from their mistakes.

What is not on that list is the most important thing … lead this country away from its dependence on foreign oil. It is the key to the future longterm stability, peace and prosperity of this nation and the world. It is as important as was the need to win World War II. It is as important as the need to recover from the Great Depression. There is no more important and urgent issue.

We know you are an Obama voter. You did not have to tell us.

Democrats learned WHAT from their mistakes? I’d like to know. After eight years of hating Bush, blocking Congress and excusing Clinton, you want RepublicanS to come like lambs to the slaughter so Democrats can do anything they wish.

Of course we need Americans working together. We have needed it since eight years ago. But we did not get it.

Democrats voted for the war in Iraq and saw the same intelligence reports that Bush saw. Now some of them want Bush investigated for doing that which Congress approved.

Dems have disgraced our military by protesting against them and declaring defeat at every turn.

DEMOCRATS have fought Homeland Defense measures while enjoying freedom from terrorists.

Dems have screamed over dismissal of government lawyers by Bush when Clinton wiped out the whole cadre as soon as he got into the White House.

Now DEMS try to blame the economy down turn on this adminstration while Democratic leaders blocked efforts to slow the rise of unfit mortgages.

Democrats have been nothing more than a roadblock to every progressive move made. Now they want COOPERATION?

Republicans have not seen nor heard that word from Democrats for such a long time, I doubt if they can act on such short notice. I hope they can. But it is hard to forget the rabid attitudes extended by Democrats for almost eight years.

Saying “pretty please with sugar on it” is the best chance Democrats will have to get cooperation. It is about time they say something NICE.

GOP May Target Use of Filibuster Senate Democrats Want To Retain the Right to Block Judicial Nominees

By Helen Dewar and Mike Allen Washington Post Staff Writers Monday, December 13, 2004; Page A01

As speculation mounts that Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist will step down from the Supreme Court soon because of thyroid cancer, Senate Republican leaders are preparing for a showdown to keep Democrats from blocking President Bush’s judicial nominations, including a replacement for Rehnquist.

Republicans say that Democrats have abused the filibuster by blocking 10 of the president’s 229 judicial nominees in his first term — although confirmation of Bush nominees exceeds in most cases the first-term experience of presidents dating to Ronald Reagan. Describing the filibusters as intolerable, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) has hinted he may resort to an unusual parliamentary maneuver, dubbed the “nuclear option,” to thwart such filibusters.

Conservative Leader Rips GOP Campaign Arm

For Republicans, the post election blame game is already beginning.

With the GOP bracing to lose 20 House seats or more in the upcoming elections, conservatives are voicing anger at party leaders they say have abandoned endangered Republican lawmakers who hold positions — like opposition to abortion rights and embryonic stem cell research — that energize the party’s base.

http://newsmax.com/insidecover/conservatives_campaigns/2008/10/24/143926.html

The GOP leadership surely realizes that it MUST come back from the fringe. It’s numerous extremist planks are simply unacceptable to the vast majority of center-left to center-right Americans.

And the last eight years have been the exclamation point on the failures of swinging TOO FAR to the political periphery.

Yes the Democrats are often extremist as well. But it seems to me that there are better options for the Republicans than to become so polarized and polarizing as well.

And in a post-Bill Clinton Democratic Party, it may be possible, with some protracted, reasonable effort, to nudge the less moderate Democrats back significantly towards the center.

And there are a LOT of new up and coming, combat-tested Democrats that are perhaps the vanguards of a sane, more restrained party.

However, these misguided and misnamed conservatives, in many (most?) cases, seemingly are willing to make NO effort to do so.

And our outgoing president is the epitome of this Intractable and imperious attitude.

Consequently, the balance of political views in this country, will no longer tolerate being bludgeoned with neo-conservative/reactionary dogma and nearly complete intolerance.

And I believe this election in nine days will for the second consecutive time, confirm this sentiment…

The problem is that no matter who wins—R or D—we’re screwed as a nation. Those people in Washington don’t care about people who work hard to raise their families and put away something for retirement. Both McCain and Obama have an agenda, one that will make their heavy duty ‘donors’ happy, and guess what? It doesn’t included helping any of us.

That’s why I think all you guys are so funny, spouting off about how great it’s going to to when your respective parites take over. Haven’t you figured it out yet? Don’t you know that ‘We, the People’ just don’t matter in the great scheme of things when it comes to governing this country?

As for Jay’s blog entry, I read that endorsement in the AL newspaper, like I’ve kept track of that newspaper since the Repub convention. Andy, one minor change, your diatribe should read “Any very bitter, very angry old man Republican that thinks…*

To your assertion:

All it got McCain was the nomination. By beating eight neo-cons, many better funded and much better supported by the party apparatus. And much respect from a WIDE cross-section of American voters in the past eighteen months.

To your bizarre example of the disreputable Chambliss, as one who has “reached across the aisle”, though he clearly has a history of practically never doing so, is in the fight for his political life.

And he get trounced in most states now I believe. But he represents one of the few remaining states whose Republican constituents are generally very wiling to turn a blind eye to the failures he helped the Bush administration create.

Why would your presidential election poll results be so drastically different from every other reputable poll taken over the same time period? Are they that dumb or are you guys that smart? Smart guys wind up dead.

You guys sure are invested in your fake polls.

RW-(the original),

I am not sure an online readership for Bookman is going to be successful either. How many provocative pieces can Bookman write when elections are over?

But wait…if McCain is elected Bookman will be in business for four more years finding fault like crazy. There will be a search for McCain’s medical records every day. We will know Sarah Palin like a book— everything from what she eats for breakfsst to the brand of her new shoes.

But if Obama wins—-readers will soon tire of so much adoration.. Luckovich will be in the comic pages. Tucker will take to chewing up the governor every week. And..not to mention…all the doctors will move to a free country if there are any free countries left.

The future is certainly STRANGE!!

Hello again, dear reader!

It has been a busy couple of days, thee Iman called my sleeper cell in America, where we had voted for thee Oblahmi many, many times, and told us to hurry along back to thee Pakistani, where thee infidel Pakistan army was invading, uh, Pakistan.

I am so confused.

Anyway, thee Treason Times and thee Urinal/Jihad have promised us that there will be no more dreaded Predator missiles patrolling thee skies, searching under each and every rock for us, for they have whined and moaned to thee American public for us, that the Pakistanis said no more or else they’re gonna get mad!

Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, KaBOOM!!

Yeah, that worked real good, didn’t it?

Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, KaBOOM!!

Maybe soon we can get back to thee Baghdaddy where it is safe, no?

Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, KaBOOM!!

How about registering some more Afghanis for the American election, please?

Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, KaBOOM!!

Hell with it, I’m out of here.

As you can see dear reader, we are in definite need of thee “hope” and “change” that thee Oblahma will bring or soon or later thee McBushie will get us.

So get out thee vote!

Allah Akbar!

Yes we can!

Mrs Godzi,

You never tired of posting thirty to forty times a day when you were IN THE NEWS. Now you are too tired to mention ANYTHING. I’d be tired too if I were a Democrat.

You have a candidate whose record and experience show NO capability for being President of the USA. A good speech is fine but it isn’t enough. Sorry your party loyalty has made you blind to the obvious.

Syria: U.S. attack serious aggression

U.S. helicopters attack an area along the Iraqi border, killing eight, the Syrian government says.

Don’t worry, our new President private Obama will be there soon toapologize to you when all you were trying to do was send a few terrorists into Iraq.

McCain continues to show his lack of leadership. He does not look Presidential, he actually looks petty. Each time I hear him, I become more and more convinced he is not capable of being President.

I think the media should be raising issues about McCain’s military record, his record on veterans issues and his efforts to conceal information about POW’s left behind after the Vietnam War. There is a lot that has not been discussed during this Presidential election cycle.

By AmVet October 26, 2008 8:49 PM To your bizarre example of the disreputable Chambliss, as one who has “reached across the aisle”, though he clearly has a history of practically never doing so, is in the fight for his political life.

Fight for his “life” in Georgia?

Today, a new group of senators calling itself the Gang of Ten, announced that it had arrived at a compromise energy proposal meant to break the partisan logjam that exists on the issue. The group’s members are: Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.)

This dude helped you socialists nearly lock down energy production in the US forever.

And what did he get for his troubles?

The goon squad clamoring for his flaming defeat?

Get back to the Reagan Mantra, morons.

The largest voter fraud in American electoral history:

House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers recently sent two letters to Attorney General Michael Mukasey deploring a news leak that the FBI is investigating Acorn, and warning Justice to focus instead on “voter suppression.” Barack Obama has also joined in this political intimidation, demanding in two letters that Mr. Mukasey appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Justice staff who he claims are engaged in “unlawful coordination” with John McCain’s campaign to pursue “so-called ‘election fraud.’” There is zero evidence that such coordination exists, but it is remarkable that a Presidential nominee would dismiss election fraud as a myth.

It doesn’t help Justice’s credibility that attorneys charged with supervising voting issues are avowed Barack Obama supporters. According to Federal Election Commission data, James Walsh, an attorney in the Civil Rights Division, has donated at least $300 to Mr. Obama. His boss, Mark Kappelhoff, has given $2,250 — nearly the maximum. John Russ, also in Civil Rights, gave at least $600 to Mr. Obama.-WSJ
