The aftermath of Ashley Todd’s story
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
McCain volunteer Ashley Todd has now confessed that she made up the story about being attacked by a large black man who carved the letter “B” into her cheek.
The young lady has issues, and I hope she gets the help she needs. End of story.
But let’s talk in a little more depth about the eagerness and even glee with which some in the right-wing blogosphere jumped on that story and immediately claimed it as proof of their worst nightmares coming true. So much of that story was unbelievable from the very beginning, yet certain people wanted to believe it so badly that they ignored all the warning signs and launched into full battle cry.
Andy McCarthy at the National Review’s Corner responded with a post so embarrassing he has now taken it down so nobody can see it.
Dan Riehl at riehlworldview.com posted under the headline “Thugs for change,” claiming that “Obama’s run his campaign just like a street thug out of Chicago. Now we get to see what some of his worst supporters are like.”
Noel Sheppard at newsbusters.org chastized AP for daring to be skeptical of the initial report. Most of all, he wanted to know why the AP didn’t report that the alleged perp was black. How dare they exclude a detail that had no bearing whatsoever on the alleged crime!!
Josh Painter at redstate.com blamed the attack on Barack Obama, suggesting an “Obama thugocracy” was coming: When Obama “urged his supporters to get in their face, did it not occur to him that some of his more deranged followers might take him literally?” Painter asked.
He was echoed by fellow redstater Erick Erickson, who wrote: “Hey! The dude was just doing what The One asked him to. Full pardon on January 21st.”
At Atlas Shugs, they posted the woman’s photo and called it “the new face of the Republican Party.”
“Shame on those that doubted this poor girl,” the post read. “Always ready to jump on the side of the leftists and thugs. ugh. Americans, I implore you to get off your asses and save this country from the radical left coup on the White House, Senate and House…. Perhaps the Obots misunderstood Obama urging his followers to Get In Their Face and GET IN THEIR FACES!” They got the advanced course of Camp Obama to cut up their faces.”
But perhaps the most interesting response came from John Moody, executive vice president at Fox News:
“If Ms. Todd’s allegations are proven accurate, some voters may revisit their support for Senator Obama, not because they are racists (with due respect to Rep. John Murtha), but because they suddenly feel they do not know enough about the Democratic nominee,” Moody wrote. “If the incident turns out to be a hoax, Senator McCain’s quest for the presidency is over, forever linked to race-baiting.”
Now, that is utter nonsense on two counts. First, while the incident did indeed turn out to be a hoax, it has in no way linked McCain to racebaiting and will have no impact whatsoever on the outcome of this race.
But Moody’s claim that Obama supporters might have revisited their position if the story were true is more intriguing, and more revealing as well. Moody claims that under those circumstances, people might suddenly feel they know less about Obama and thus change their vote. But what is the logical trail between those two thoughts? Such an attack would tell people absolutely nothing about Obama.
The real explanation lies in the answer that Moody rejects: racism. A lot of white Americans voting for Obama have had to overcome various degrees of racism to get themselves to that point. That doesn’t make them bad people; to the contrary, they’re thinking things through, and that’s great.
However, for many of those people, an attack of the sort described by Ashley Todd would heighten those internal, emotional obstacles to voting for Obama. That’s precisely why some on the right — with notable exceptions such as Michelle Malkin, a person I do not ordinarily respect much — were so quick to try to make it a huge deal.
They ought to be ashamed.

I don’t have a McCain/Palin sticker on my car because I don’t want it keyed or worse and let’s not forget that police departments all over this country (including the Atlanta Police Department) are gearing up just in case of an Obama loss !!

Jay,
There were also many of us right wingers that were skeptical from the get go, not only here, but on blogs far more prominent than some you listed.
So far it’s only her word and her word isn’t all that credible at the moment, but I think we should be respectful of the fact she claims to have past (and I would say present) mental issues.
I think it’s telling that you have now put up three blogs about what was pretty easily identifiable as a hoax, but not a peep from you about this.
Or

So “Coporal” did you stay in your foxhole when your commanding officer yelled “Charge”? I used to read with interest your blogs. While I rarely agreed with you, I respected your opinion.
Now it appears that you only hide behind anonimous words and are not ready or willing to show your colors in public! What a spineless position! Oh, haven’t you heard of the slashed tires at an Obama rally in NC? Both sides have real jerks within their supporters, but stand up like a man if you allegedly support your candidate.
AJC/DNC: And your point? It wouldn’t be that all are innocent until proven guilty? Oh yeah, I forgot the right has trashed the Constitution and any right of due process. All the majority of the left/middle bloggers stated that they hope she would recover and that due process should be given to the assaulter. Unfortunately, she was the assaulter and has mental illness.

There’s a kernel of truth in here: ” Now we get to see what some of his worst supporters are like.”
That’s what is illustrated - even in this story. The worst of the McCain supporters. And a couple of the stories RW linked to - the worst of the Obama supporters.
It’s a shame no matter which end of the spectrum. But as far as the perpetrators, in this story the woman’s just plain ill. In too many other stories, the people are just plain mean. Or, dare I say, “UnAmerican”? (Meaning: not willing to accord others the right to express their views without fear of retribution).
That Fox exec. All I can say is, if the Peter Principle’s in effect, that’s strike two. Then as I wrote the other day, he can recycle thru the industry. Maybe over to MSNBC.

Jay, conservative talk radio also had a field day with this story. The truly sad part is that some will never hear the truth or think (want to think) that it is being covered up. For those who think the latter watch your version of the televised bible, FOX News. I for one do not feel sorry for this sick deliousional girl. How much sympathy would her made up assailant have gotten if her story had been true. Some folks have Christian forgiveness only for their like kind.

Yeah, Ashley Todd’s tale of victimization was an obvious hoax.
Yet… Right-wingers across the Internet latched onto Ashley Todd like cream gravy on a chicken-fried scam. I’m no communist liberal socialist terrorist nudist; I’m Linda Jane the Law Enforcement officer – and I was shocked to see so many rabid responses to that loony girl’s story.
With but a few exceptions, right-winger reporters and bloggers gobbled up Ashley’s lie because it fit their preconceived notions of race. Period.
What is wrong with these nattering nabobs of negativism? When will they accept the fact that no one is presecuting them?

Excellent article. I’m glad these hysterical comments have been kept for posterity, especially after they were quietly retracted, as if such inflammatory remarks should not be scrutinized. Indeed there are too many political zealots eager to tap the deep-seeded prejudices that a number of American voters are fighting through (more power to them for voting Obama despite their biases).
That Drudge et al can accept a story so fraught with red flags without any skepticism shows how desperate they are about the election.

Road Kill: You’re missing the point-
The real explanation lies in the answer that Moore rejects: racism. A lot of white Americans voting for Obama have had to overcome various degrees of racism to get themselves to that point. That doesn’t make them bad people; to the contrary, they’re thinking things through, and that’s great.
I’ll deal with that^^ in a second, first let me dispense of you, road kill.
Many on the left immediately believed the account of the “rape” victim in the Duke Lacrosse Team incident simply because of the fact that they view most white Americans as racists.
Racists who would gang rape a black woman thinking there would be no consequences.
Which is worse, I ask?
I am at fault for believing this young lady’s account, my bad, I should have remembered that most of America’s young adults have been indoctrinated by the public school system and are not clear, well balanced thinkers.
They are backing Oblahma quite heavily, after all.
And as far as what kookman is saying, that is total nonsense.
Most of these former “Conservative” Oblahma backers have allowed themselves to be bullied into thinking they are racists and are coming out for him on the basis of white guilt.
Plain and simple.
They are mau mauing themselves, hahaha.
How else could you ignore the past associations and policies of a hard core left wing America hating baby killer like this…………biting my tongue, Oblahma?

Reporting this article before the true facts are know is irresponsible journalism by FOX. They must have known how contentious and divisive an issue it would be given the current political climate. I suggest it was done by FOX purely to rouse vitriolic hatred amongst supporters of both sides (although I would suggest there could be a leaning towards inflaming republican supporters given their so-called “fair and Balanced” approach to journalism, e.g. Sean Hannity). That they have achieved their goal can be seen quite easily by scrolling down through the articles viewer responses to see how ignorant, bigoted and nasty Americans of all persuasions can be towards their fellow countrymen. Continue to act like sheep and you will be seen as such by the world at large. It’s time to grow up and see that you are but sheep being used by the influential media and politicians for their own personal agendas. I note this morning that FOX has now called it a lie. However, I see no apology for airing the story so much on “every” news program. Hate mongering through airing such disgusting stories appears to be the way FOX does business. It is disgusting and immoral gutter journalism at its worst.

I think that was the way the assassins got to President Bush in that movie that was acclaimed by the left about murdering him by stopping his motorcade and then killing him. Bhutto got killed in Pakistan by someone jumping on the motorcade and killing her. JFK was assassinated in a motorcade so even though the press would have tried to charge Governor Palin with murder if these idiots would’ve gotten run over, no clear headed person could have blamed the motorcade instead of the Obama thugs.

Palin gave her first policy speech of the campaign today in Pittsburgh, focusing on policy adjustment for special needs children. Palin said the money politicians are extracting through earmarks for “pet projects” such as “fruit fly research in France” should be reallocated to “take care of the most vulnerable children.”
Palin just continues to amaze us all. Not only with her ignorance (the novelty of that is starting to wear off, believe it or not), but the pride she appears to take in her ignorance.
Drosophila (fruit fly) research has yielded benefits for many physical conditions afflicting humans - autism, brain disorders, cancer - just to name a few. The benefits of this research are extraordinary.
The use of fruit flies is extremely common in genetic research because the chromosomes of the fruit fly are huge (compared to that of other animals), and with their rapid rate of birth/reproduction, making them perfect for experimentation.
Science, like politics, isn’t Palin’s best subject.
Maybe she could talk about witchcraft or rapture religion.
Mentioning motivation from “God’s vision of perfection versus the world’s vision of perfection, ” Palin said she would triple the funding for special needs children by 2011 if elected Vice President. Palin urged the federal government to fully fund the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), “a law ensuring services to children with disabilities throughout the nation.”
Wait just a minute - is she suggesting that the government somehow ensure that children with disabilities have access to education? Even in private schools?
Smells like socialism to me!

If McCain “wins” it will be due to election rigging and voter suppression, both of which the GOP is extensively involved in.
It has been reported in West Virginia last week during early voting that election machines were switching votes from Obama to McCain. This also happened in Ohio in 2004.
The GOP continues to try (and in many cases succeed!) to disenfranchise especially minority (Democratic) voters across the country. They tried it here in Montana but were stopped by a Republican judge who was appalled at the GOP’s blatant efforts to derail democracy in the 2008 presidential election.
If McCain wins through fraud, then a lot of people are going to be p** off. We’ve had the last two elections stolen so that the corrupt idiot and his gang of criminals could occupy the White House. I think Americans have had enough.
If McCain wins, through fraud, and people are p** off enough, some people may choose to take to the streets. Why wouldn’t they??
When the election was rigged in Ukraine and people took to the streets, they were praised by the US press, by Bush even, as standing up for democracy. So if our election is stolen, again, why shouldn’t we stand up for democracy, take to the streets, and refuse to accept the next criminal regime?
I do not advocate violence. I advocate liberation.

T,
I saw that about Raymond Burr on O’Reilly and it struck me as odd that they wondered if people would suddenly change their opinion of him. Then I realized that as a conservative I’ve always had to separate most entertainers talent from the person since they overwhelmingly disagree with me. Funny how in that light it’s the right that’s far more tolerant.
It wouldn’t surprise me if their was rioting if McCain won, but I don’t think it would be race riots. I think it would more likely be angry liberals that have been lied to by the media believing the election was stolen. I don’t know they’ve been lied to yet, but if McCain wins it’ll be obvious that they were. They just won’t believe it.

Kind of like how liberal hacks jump at the false claims of people yelling “kill him” at rallies or attacking the Duke lacrosse team.
Bookman’s criticism might have some weight if he wasn’t one of the very same partisan hacks who jump on any story to use as a tool for attacking any who don’t share their narrow views. Kind of like how he is flogging this stupid story or Palin’s wardrobe nonsense or distorting McCain’s “100 year” statement or accusing people of being racist for using the term “uppity” or any other number of examples. Bookman is a hypocrite, pure and simple.

Look, I have voted for Republicans for 20 years but I’m not dumb enough to vote the Republican Party in its current state. They’re completely disorganized and don’t even resemble the Republican Party I grew up liking (Reagan). I’m now a registered Independent and I have already voted for Obama in Florida. Why? There are a lot less murders in Arizona then there are in Illinois
It depends on one’s definition of “a lot”.
And while technically true, it is very misleading.
2007 Arizona - 468 murders with a population of 6,338,755 (The highest number since totals were first tallied in 1960)
2007 Illinois - 752 murders with a population of 12,852,528 (The lowest number since 1966)
FACT: Arizona’s murder rate is considerably higher than Illinois.

It was obvious this was a hoax from the get go.
I responded to some of the email blasts I received from some of the blogs / email lists I subscribe to with a simple question.
Why someone would carve a backwards B on someone else’s face.
When I suggested it was because a person carving a B in their OWN face while looking in a mirror would not realize that they were doing it backwards.
Some of the bloggers I used to respect lashed out at me in a very harsh way. Others suggested that if I was not on board with the message, that I was the enemy.
I guess I am kicked off the Republican team now.

Statement - He (Murtha) also said our Marine Corps was nothing but a bunch of cold blooded killers.
Reality - Murtha, a Vietnam veteran and a retired Marine Corps colonel, said U.S. Marines murdered 24 unarmed Iraqis, including women and children in the city of Haditha on November 19, 2005, in retaliation for the death of a fellow Marine from a roadside bomb.
His exact words - Well, I’ll tell you exactly what happened. One Marine was killed and the Marines just said we’re going to take care – we don’t know who the enemy is, the pressure was too much on them, so they went into houses and they actually killed civilians.
He was referring to 15 Marines in one singular event.
FACT - The statement that he said “our Marine Corps was nothing but a bunch of cold blooded killers” is an outright lie.

A brit mingles among Obama supporters in Kansas City Some funny observations.
To me, the most striking difference between Obama and most of the U.S. electorate is not that he is black, but that he is thin.
One third of his audience beside the Independence Memorial was merely overweight, but at least another third was clinically obese. Most will have difficulty waddling to the polling booths.
Never mind the white vote, Obama will win if he can just get out the fat vote. There is so much of it, in this society which has overdone almost everything for so long.
I wandered among the crowd, asking if they have any idea what their idol will change?
A 52-year-old hospice carer said: ‘This is the first time I’ve been to a political rally. I’ve never felt so excited about politics before.’
A 41-year-old architect, Jim Wright, said it was plain that things would get worse. ‘In one street in a small town where I’m doing some work, three families are doubling up - they have moved in with neighbours because their own homes have been repossessed.
‘I’ve no idea what Obama will do, but I’m kind of a liberal. I’m for him. If he can get us even some way to a free health-care system like your NHS it will be a wonderful thing for this country.’
Hoffman, a sharp, alert 68-year-old who retired from banking a few years ago, has devoted most of this year to campaigning for Obama. His wife has raised £300,000 for his cause.
I asked him the same question I’d asked dozens of people: what will Obama do as President?
Hoffman shrugged. ‘How much can any President do? He’s not superhuman. How much can governments do? But this man could be the most popular President America has ever had.
On the rostrum, Obama was pushing his line that McCain is the rich people’s candidate.
‘I want to give the middle class a break. I’m going to slash taxes for working people so you can pay your bills. It’s time to turn the page on economic policies that put Wall Street before Main Street.’
A chant breaks out in the crowd: ‘Eight is enough, we can’t take it any more.’
A local political reporter said to me: ‘I find it shocking that, a fortnight from election day, neither candidate dares to tell the American people just how hard things are going to get - that there isn’t any money for their programmes. Both are still talking about tax cuts, for God’s sake!’
All of us, not merely the people of the U.S., should start hoping that this cool, remarkable, clever, but curiously remote man possesses some notion about how to translate his vision into a tolerable sort of reality.
This supporter’s reality?
‘I support Obama because he doesn’t belong to the political establishment,’ says Fells, who has hosted a Democratic fundraiser.
The U.S. manufactures eccentrics like no other nation on Earth. Fells, a prime specimen, is an enthusiast for conspiracy theories. He possesses a vast library of books and posters about the Kennedy assassination, Martin Luther King’s killing and plenty else.
He thinks the Twin Towers were destroyed on 9/11 to profit the Rockefellers, and that George W. Bush engineered the sub-prime financial crisis.
‘These are not conspiracy theories; they’re the untold truth,’ he argues gravely.
If Hillary Clinton had been chosen as Obama’s vice-presidential running-mate and they ended up winning the election, Fells reckons Obama would have been shot soon after getting to the White House, so she could get his job. As it is, ‘They’ - which means all sorts of sinister interests, including the CIA - ‘will be happy just to control Obama as President’.
But Fells is going to vote for him anyway, and so are a great many other Americans.

the really telling thing about this story is that msnbc has reported that the pennsylvania communications director for mccain was pushing the story and that the “attacker” was black to the news outlets. i am sure that there are psycho supporters of each candidate but this is just another example of the hate politics to the republican/conservative side of things. especially when the campaign officials are involved in disseminating the story. will mccain have the balls to fire the guy? i doubt it, he is selling his reputation in a failing bid for the white house

Here we go with the racial bs I’m so tired of this s* That girl is no more crazy than me or you. She needs a way to get out of the mess she got herself into, hence an insanity “I’m looney” plea She is doing what has been taught in her household while she was growing up, after all she is only 20. She should be charged & punished as much as she can be, for attempting to race bait, incite a racial riot, influencing a political election. What she did is serious indeed. She should hope she doesn’t really become a victim in the future, because no one may listen since she cried wolf this time.
And all the rest of us no matter the race should try to learn how to get along with each other.
What are people of other races being penalized for anyway?
Did any of us get the chance to choose our race/nationality before we were born?
When we choose to side with one race or another and divide ourselves we are committing an extremely foolish act.
And it will only get worse in the future if we don’t make action to try to change it now, no matter who gets elected.
Hate is hate & it has no pre-elected time frame in which to show its ugly head.
There are injustices that have been done to others of other races, serious ones, and the time is now to stop it, heal the past hurts & move past it, otherwise, our economy is not the only thing that is going to suffer greatly.
We are already experiencing an excess of one of the most heinous crimes human nature can commit in 95% of the fifty states and that is murder.

What an enlightening column!!!
I am shocked, shocked! Partisans and interest groups jumping on a story like this so close to an election? Rape and violence plus a nexus with politics selling papers and air time? I’ve never heard of anything like this ever in the US. Never ever! At least not since…uh…maybe the Anita (F) Hill scandal.
Or maybe the Tawana Brawley scandal. Or maybe the original “Nifonging” at Duke. Oh the hand-wringing, oh the outrage, oh the leftest bedwetting that ensued. Can we ever forget? Has Mr. Bookmam forgotten?
How about a column juxtaposing coverage and commentary of these the events? You think anyone will be sued (successfully) like Sharpton over this latest false accusation? How about the screeds written before and during the confirmation hearings of Justice Thomas? I saw no mention of them in the article above, but think there are incredible similarities. But I forget, the job of the columnist is to persuade, not inform. My bad.
Also, when I went to J-school, we introduced the full name of a person quoted, then used the last name in later citations (see graf 14). Are we talking Mary Tyler or was this a Freudian slip after reading too much Michael Moore? Want Moore, Jay?

Look at the Urinal/Jihad whining on behalf of al Qaeda, the US wants to train Pakistanis to protect the Pakistani people:
“The American special forces failed in Afghanistan and Iraq,” said Ameerul Azim, an official in the hard-line Islamic party Jamaat-e-Islami. “Those who failed everywhere cannot train our people.”-Urinal/Jihad
Unreal-
US intelligence officers posted in Pakistan have reportedly been making detailed enquiries into the likely links of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JEI) of Pakistan headed by Qazi Hussain Ahmed with Al Qaeda of Osama bin Laden. These enquiries are reported to have been started following the arrest of Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, supposedly No. 3 in Al Qaeda, in March from the house of a women’s wing leader of the JEI at Rawalpindi in an area where many serving and retired officers of the Pakistan Army live.
Earlier this year, two other suspected cadres of Al Qaeda were arrested from the house of another JEI member in Karachi. These arrests have given rise to a suspicion that JEI office-bearers and cadres not only in the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) and Balochistan, but also in other parts of Pakistan have been helping the surviving members of Al Qaeda who crossed over into Pakistan from Afghanistan in the beginning of last year.-Southeast Asia Analysis

This woman’s fake story just feeds into the stereotype of black men as the boogeyman. The racists in this country were took quick to jump on the bandwagon and generalize about black men including Barack Obama. This whole situation is an exampple of how some whites need to dig deep and analyze their thoughts and feelings about black people. Some, as the writer here states, have done that. But there far too many out here who need a lot of work. As an African American I am intensely proud of how Barack Obama has ocnducted himself throughout the entire campaign. I’m also proud of how African Americans as a whole have conducted themselves with pride and humility.

I think that this pathetic episode will do tremendous damage to the McCain campaign, not only in Pennsylvania, but across the country. It will do harm because the mentally ill person who performed this stunt was a rabid McCain supporter. The “right wing” blogs, newspapers, and TV stations were quick to jump on this case as evidence why we should not vote for Obama. A black President and his supporters were dangerous, violent, unpredictable, animalistic. It perpetuates the old racial steriotype of black men. What is worse, is that the McCain jumped on this story almost gleefully, seeing a ray of hope in their campaign. McCain and Palin even called the “victim” to offer their support and encouragement. How stupid they look now!!!! The fact that the McCain campaign took this story as 100% true from he first and ran with it, only for it to blow up so badly in their face, will do trememdous damage to their image, and the entire McCaim campaign not only in Pa., but everywhere.

Yeah, this girl was an ignorant redneck, apparently in the throes of some deep psychosis. Race baiting indeed.
However, to put it into perspective, ACORN is trying to rig a national election for Obama, so when it pans out about the depth of the voter fraud, and he wins (gag), would that make him criminally responsible for theft by taking?
And here’s more food for thought……it is being said that many states looking into potential voter fraud simply cannot complete thorough investigations prior to Nov 4, but more likely by the end of the year.
What if damning evidence of massive fraud for Obama is proved, and then the SCOTUS decides to overturn the results, delaying inauguration, and looking at a nationwide recount, until all evidence is scoured more thoroughly than the chads in Florida?
SCOTUS set the precedent for involvement in 2000, why not again in 2008? Think about it. And sweat.

As I have thought about it, I am no longer so afraid of Barack’s election - with a super majority, we will enter a four year depression that will come close to - but not complete a total collapse of America - it’s what real Americans need to bring them to their senses - a nuclear bomb set off in NYC or Chicago will be the begining of this - since we are going to slash military spending by 50% we won’t be able to respond - and unemployment exceeding 25% or more will insure a tax base unable to support medicare, medicaid, social security, or anything else - which will insure that the democrats will fall hard from grace and be irrelevant for the next 25 years - food riots in the big cities will kill off a substantial portion of the democratic base as well.
At that time, if our military has not seized power (since the must defend our country against all enemies, foreign AND DOMESTIC), and if the bones are still here - that is, if Russia has not flexed its muscle to end the US as we know it - since we are not going to have missile defense shields, we won’t be able to stop an attack, I can see Obama now, asking to have milk and cookies with Putin has he has the top 5 US cities under mushroom clouds - IF, we can survive four years to get there, we will get real Americans who love America back into office - and then, we can start the slow rebuilding process to correct over the next 20 years what gets destroyed in the next five - FBO, he is Satan in a radicals body

It is amazing to me that a tiny cadre of seniorile delinquents can take a blog hostage and reduce the level of discourse to the puerile nonsense seen here each and every day. love child: Bush looked into “Rutin-Putin’s” eyes and saw a good man. At least Obama won’t be using the “I can see into his Soul” method of foreign policy that our current President has used. I do believe he would come off of vacation in the event of a National emergency. I do believe he will thoroughly read the intelligence reports that will come across his desk. I do believe he will read the newspaper not just to read the Sunday funnies. I do believe he will be a President who does not shirk off his duties to his VP and other subordinants. I do believe first executive his choice of a VP was vastly more thought out than his opponent. I do believe it’s time to elect a President who has a measure of intelligent and a calming demeanor not someone I want to have a beer with and who has a cowboy mentality. I do believe Obama will be a true uniter (a made up Bushism)and not a divider not only in America but the rest of the world. Didn’t take long for the Obama bashers to jump on that one. Joke was on McCain. AND Joe McCains 911 call to the police also backfired.
Gordon Liddy
In 1998, Liddy’s home was the site of a McCain fundraiser. Over the years, he has made at least four contributions totaling $5,000 to the senator’s campaigns—including $1,000 this year.
Last November, McCain went on his radio show. Liddy greeted him as “an old friend,” and McCain sounded like one. “I’m proud of you, I’m proud of your family,” he gushed. “It’s always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great.”

They keep trying to make something out of Bill Ayres, who served on a charity board with many Republicans, chosen by Republicans, and Obama. But they have the “biased” media completely quiet about McCain’s ties to Keating and G Gordon Liddy. Maybe it shows one campaign has a future goal based on issues and the good of the country, and the other just sells fear and the devisivness of the past.

It’s unfortunate that we’ve become a nation where “News First” is more important than “Country First.” No incident, especially when a violent crime has been reported, should be printed or broadcast until the allegations have been checked and the sources prove to be reliable. Look at what happened to Richard Jewell because of the media. Even when a person is innocent, people will continue to be suspicious, since the first story always makes the deepest impression. I wish McCain & Palin had waited to call her until the police had a chance to investigate. After that, the Obama campaign had to respond or appear unsympathetic. I read many reports and few used the words “alleged” even though it was obvious to me (just look at her picture) that the black eye and scratch was not the result of an assault, especially the way she described it. As a victim of a violent assault, it eats at me every time I hear a false accusation, since it hurts women who need to be taken seriously. Regarding her mental condition, although mental illness should also be taken seriously, it is often used as an excuse for bad behavior.

“She is a diva. She takes no advice from anyone,” said this McCain adviser, “she does not have any relationships of trust with any of us, her family or anyone else. Also she is playing for her own future and sees herself as the next leader of the party. Remember: divas trust only unto themselves as they see themselves as the beginning and end of all wisdom.”

It is absolutely disgusting to see how eager the NeoCons were to pin the blame of this attack on Obama. The ugliness of this great country of ours is finally coming out. And unfortunately for McCain he can be held responsible for it’ recent surge. Though his running mate Palin seems to enjoy the hatred and racism being used by her party. Leads me to believe that she has indeed “palled around” with the KKK.

I am a McCain supporter, and I agree……. Ashley Todd is troubled. She nneds help.
What is more troubling is an entire party that thinks its ok to investigate a private citizen, when the citizen asks an honest question of the party’s nominee….
The Democratic Party had no right to investigate the background of “Joe the Plumber”. Nor did the media as an obvious extension of the Obama campaign.
Just because “Joe” got Obama too give up the real Obama economic plan is not reason to vilifie and smear this guy Joe.
Obama walked down his street. Not the other way around……
This is an example of why troubled people like Ashley feel they need to go to extremes for who they want to win. Hey if entire campaigns condone this behaviour, whats the harm?????

Gov. Sarah Palin’s signature accomplishment — a contract to build a 1,715-mile pipeline to bring natural gas from Alaska to the Lower 48 — emerged from a flawed bidding process that narrowed the field to a company with ties to her administration, an Associated Press investigation shows.
Instead of creating a process that would attract many potential builders, Palin slanted the terms away from an important group — the global energy giants that own the rights to the gas. Despite promises and legal guidance not to talk directly with potential bidders, Palin had meetings or phone calls with nearly every major candidate, including TransCanada. The leader of Palin’s pipeline team had been a partner at a lobbying firm where she worked on behalf of a TransCanada subsidiary. Also, that woman’s former business partner at the lobbying firm was TransCanada’s lead private lobbyist on the pipeline deal, interacting with legislators in the weeks before the vote to grant TransCanada the contract. Plus, a former TransCanada executive served as an outside consultant to Palin’s pipeline team.
Uh oh! Our Dear Sarah has BIG GAS!

He said he only gave copies of the photos to police and Ms. Todd’s employer, the College Republicans. One photo appeared on The Drudge Report on Thursday, setting off a storm of media attention.”

They’ve been hounded by ghosts, chased by illusions into convenient corrals where they’ve been made to give up every American ideal that so many of their forebears fought and died for, and to do it all in the very name of the country being forsaken.
Forget Democrat and Republican, people: some of your leaders are leading you by reason and explanation, and some of them are chasing you around like ranchers and using your fear. You are not free as long as you are ruled by fear.

Just for the record, like the Colonel said earlier. “Who i’m voting for has nothing to do with race. If Obama had McCain’s experience and supported his campaign platform, Obama would absolutely be who I vote for……
It’s his lack of experience, his poor judgement, his associations with skanky American hating people, how the media is basically acting as an extension of his campaign team, and the way his people run his campaign when he or Biden expose their true adgenda for everyone to see.
The situation with Joe the Plumber…. This illustrates his true plan for taxes, and yet the media focuses on Joe vs. Obama’s very telling response to his question……
The old Democrat 2 step……
Its too bad really, because all of this has an effect on weak people like Ashley Todd. They lash out and lose all manner of decorum, and thats a shame.
Its not all Obama’s fault as we all have to take responsibility for our actions in the end, but weak people can’t cope the way others can.

Want Moore, Jay?Conservatives are so funny, and dumb, but funny. For ever Tawana there’s a Susan Smith, in which two innocent children died, but the scary black man did it. Turns out she was a liar. Or how about The Duke Case next to the Charles Stuart Case in Boston, where he shot his pregnant wife in the head, blamed it on a black man and caused a race war in Boston. Oh I can go on if you like. How about the town of Rosewood, FL, where a white woman claims a black man beat and raped her, when in fact she was cheating on her husband with another man. By the way, that entire town was burned to the ground and nearly 30 people were lynched and burned alive. Oh wait, I can keep going. How about Emmit Till, a 15 year old black boy who apparently was hanged for whistling at a white woman.
So you see in the end, these cases that you cited are bad and I definitely don’t agree with what happened, but there have been far worse things. Unfortunately for this girls tale, we’ve seen where that can lead. Thanks

Ponder the following:
What if the Obamas had paraded five children across the stage, including a three month old infant and an unwed, pregnant teenage daughter?
What if John McCain was a former president of the Harvard Law Review? What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his graduating class?
What if McCain had only married once, and Obama was a divorcee?
What if Obama was the candidate who left his first wife after a severe disfiguring car accident, when she no longer measured up to his standards?
What if Obama had met his second wife in a bar and had a long affair while he was still married?
What if Michelle Obama was the wife who not only became addicted to pain killers but also acquired them illegally through her charitable organization?
What if Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard?
What if McCain was a charismatic, eloquent speaker? What if Obama couldn’t read from a teleprompter?
What if Obama was the one who had military experience that included discipline problems and a record of crashing seven planes?
What if Obama was the one who was known to display publicly, on many occasions, a serious anger management problem?
What if Michelle Obama’s family had made their money from beer distribution?
What if the Obamas had adopted a white child?

It’s always funny to hear “old white ladys” (or “old white men” for that matter) declare to the world that there is in fact a single black man out there that would be their guy for the presidency.
It’s funny… because of all the competent, capable, and principled blacks we have in this country, they always have just one so they can convince the world they are not a racist or something (as if we care). Another thing that’s funny, before last week the name they used to utter was none other than Colin Powell, but of course we know since CP chooses to not carry the good ol’ white folks’ water anymore, he’s on their %hyt list!

If he made better choices on who he chose to associate with (Tony Rezko supposidly is talking to authorities to reduce his sentence…. Lets see what comes out of that…..Never mind Franklin Raines, Khalid Rhasidi, William Ayers, Wright and Flager)
Was the one supporting no tax increases on anybody
If he supported a win vs. surrender policy in Iraq and Afganistan (Got to finish what you start to have any respect on the world stage)
if he supported “smaller” government and refraining from involving governement policy in everything a citizen does
I would be first in line to vote for him instead of McCain.
I could give a rats A** if he was purple.
Racism and the associated rightious indignation of reverse racism is the most destructive force in American society outside government taking control of the everyday lives of its citizens.

Young Black Man, you are so right.
I’m just proud that Colin Powell was able to show them that he is open to Obama 100%. Powell also pointed out the flaws in the Republican party, that I as a democrat point out very often.
I would ask all the convservatives on this blog, to go back and replay Colin Powells interview on Meet the Press last Sunday. The man has more insight into your party, that is very eye opening, than most give him credit for.
This year has cast a light on the Republican Party, that usually only gets shown at the LOCAL level. I’m talking about the hateful, dividing speech and the lack of diversity. I’m talking about the lack of REAL compassion for their neighbors and people who are different. I’m talking about the “They aren’t like us” or “One of those people” point of views.
All of this coming from a group that claims the moral majority in Christian values.

With McCain allowing all the racial hatred at his rallies, it makes me wonder how he treats his Indian Adopted daughter. Bush used the same dirty racial overtones to McCain and some ugly things were said about his daughter then. Funny how people will do just about anything to win. Ugly racial words just hurt everyone not just one race. This is just really sad on all levels.

The unfortunate part is my vote, cast after a critical review of the candidate’s policies, positions, etc., will be negated by a low life who doesn’t even know which day of the week…
We need to move to a system where votes are weighted based on a number of factors, including education, wage-earner, tax-payer, no history of felonies, legal citizen, veteran, etc…..

C.H. See this is the reverse racism I’m talking about.
McCain can no more control the outburst of an extremist few at his rallies as Obama can.
McCain cannot do anything about people who choose to vote for him because he is white, but he will accept the votes, sure.
Obama on the other hand courts the votes of people voting for him because of his skin color, with very pulpit and preachy “sermons” that lack substance, but try to invigorate people not knowledgeable on the real issues at hand.
Rise up! Hope! Change! A better day! ect. These are universals……..
Obama focuses on this at these rallies while providing very little info. on how to achieve all of it. Its like he’s pulling a fast one on America (I know I know, Bush pulled a fast one for the past 8 years…BS Bush had 9/11 and that changed everything his administration was about. This cannot be denied. Try as Obama might to gloss over that part of the Bush presidency by omission of the event from any discussion involving Bush).
Alot of Americans (Black and White)like me, resent the tactic of courting votes based on skin color. This is pure racism of the wost kind.
As far a General Powell? he made his decsion based on 2 things no matter waht is reported.
He go wrongly screwed by Bush while Sec. State… He looks at Obama as “payback” to the GOP for that……….
He also looked at the political landscape and saw that if Obama does not make it this time, that there are no other black men/women with the inclination, connections,or capabilities to mount a campaign for years to come……. This is his primary motivator. It did not matter who has the appropriate experience, or will do a better job for the country to Gen. Powell.
For that, I lost alot of respect for him. A person who I would have voted for if he ran for President.
Go ahead and ignore this post, but its the truth without prejudice.

When this story was immediately broken only a few news sources touched it because of it’s obvious fallacy. Those news organizations were Fox, the Drudge Report, Rush Limbaugh, Hugh Hewitt, Michelle Malkin (although she said it was fake from the beginning), and Free Republic. All conservative news outlets that reach millions of Americans. A reputable news organization like Fox (haha that’s even funny to my own ears) should have checked the facts before running with this story like they did. Now everyone is mad at the other side for broadcasting that it was a fake. Well since I work in news, let me shed a little light on this. When your major news competitors are running with a story that you are holding out on because of inconsistencies or lack of evidence, and then they are proven to be wrong, you have to run that retraction. Or else the public is blindly walking around believing a lie. Plus it makes for great ratings and hits when you make your opponent look like an idiot, which is what happened in the case of Fox and all the other conservatives who were screaming bloody murder and riling up the lynch mobs.
On another point, I was all ready to say that you can’t blame McCain for this lunatic. And in a way, you can’t. He can’t control the fact that he’s worked up some of his unhinged supporters to the fact that they are willing to start a race war for their candidate to win. However his campaign is not without fault. It has recently been reported that the head of the Pennsylvania McCain campaign emailed and called news outlets like Fox urging them to run this story. Now that says a lot about the people running his campaign, that they think they can sway votes by again riling up their supporters so much to start an unnecessary race war in a city that is trying to recover from economic ruin. That’s not honorable.

Shayna, I love it when posters call others dumb, then immediately launch into ad hominem attacks. You made incredibly specious logical jumps and false conclusions. In your response to histrionics I, you assumed 1) that the author was conservative and white 2) the posting discussed race and 3)—rising to the level of sublimely asinine—that somewhere in the post you responded to was something that used the Duke case “… [as] proof that everyone is against white people.”
Reading is fundamental, Shayna. Without a solid foundation, one will jump to strange conclusions and spell his or her children’s names in ways that defy all known spelling conventions.
An avowed independent/centrist wrote histrionics I, with admittedly a bit of hyperbole. The author is not, repeat, not white. The posting treated disparate media treatment of several similar events.
The original cases cited all covered the four corners of the current case. They involved individuals, single women, each alleging battery or harassment. Not one ended in homicide or a conviction. Such is the reality (currently) with the “reverse b” woman.
Your cases by contrast are “bad” (so descriptive!) as they interject race, pogroms, lynching, and the razing of communities. Your cases, “so you see” are not germane or on point. Your even mentioning race goes beyond the scope of the original post!
One can only assume perpetual victimhood to logical fallacies keeps you from tackling the complexities of class, corporate media coverage, media bias, pandering to the lowest denominator in viewership (like a subset that cannot see beyond race or thinks strippers can never tell the truth) in the very sector in which you claim to work.

The Corporal (poster’s name ) said he ” tried to be nice on this one” I have little reason to doubt his good demeanor, but more than enough on his comprehension. I suggest he reads the article again; if still cannot understand, let me give a hint
My car displays a Obama bumper sticker and has not been keyed. However I was stared at with contempt by a group of men outside the coffee shop. To believe this is indicative of McCain supporters; I would have to believe my good friend and car pool buddy of twenty years who supports McCain, is indecent. Hopefully The Corporal will draw out the rest.

What does this say—this vicious campaign has divided this country during a time of when we need to be united. The McCain/Rovian campaign of smear and lie and hate has, unfortunately, been working. We used to see ourselves as Americans with different political views. Now we are one step away from violent behavior—shame on that dishonorable, unAmerican campaign.

We cannot blame the media for jumping all over this story, after all this appears to be what they have been trained to do. Some media professionals do have the ability to listen to details and then decide if they will add their own bias to the individual stories-thanks to you all that allow your brain to process such information before you hastly jump to your own personal conclusions. So why is no one calling Hoax News on clearly an attempt by them to sway opinion with their “fair and balanced” bs!? When I first heard the story I laughed because I knew the other shoe was going to drop. Frankly, there has been bogus stories on both sides of the hill, but when you have a white “damsel in distress” involved, media monkeys like Hoax News turn it up a notch.
And AJC/DNC Mgmt, I used to live in a dorm with lacrosse players who were a bunch of animals, so when I first heard the news it did not surprise me any. Also the left says they are the tolerant ones and claim things like free speech but anytime they disagree with a conservative speaker they make a spectacle of themselves like at the RNC. I am also tired of the right talking about socialism when alot of them voted for the bailout. I am independent and have watched cnn and fox and all of you who think fox is so slanted please try to find something negative about Obama on cnn. Not a neocon? Yeeeaaah, riiiggght. And I bet you have a bridge to Nowhere to sell us too.
I mean, in order for us to believe your bleating about how leftwingers don’t criticise Obama or all of that, would kind of require us to have not noticed the fight for the nomination that went on between Hillary Clinton’s supporters and Obama’s supporters - both sides of that particular battle being leftwing.
Or how the leftwing reacted when Obama rolled over on FISA.
The left has criticised Obama plenty, most of the rightwing talking points about Obama’s experience came from leftwingers. The thing is, by picking Mrs Moose for his running mate, McCain neutralised that particular weakness in Obama.
So now we are going into the election more or less happy with what we have got. You on the other hand, are going into this election with McCain and Palin - a pair who seem to think that the majority of America, that America that lives in cities, fuels America’s industrial, scientific and economic might, is not the “real” America.
You know how Dallas Texas is really just part of Canada apparently.

Historonics or should I call you an Asinine fool who likes to use big words even though you can’t form a coherent argument. I will go with the latter. Your post was all over the place and it’s hard to decide where to begin to completely dismantle your little rant. I’ll keep it simple. Since you seem to think you have a grasp of history and lessons learned, I was only making the point that this type of blatantly racist accusation has led to some devastating things and I wouldn’t put it past some of the nut jobs in this coutry to take it there again. I was not making leaps or jumping to conclusions about what could happen, because they already have. I have seen plenty of people on this board who have somehow managed to justify this sick girls actions with “look at the Duke Case or Tawana Brawley” suggesting that those two cases somehow even the score.
You need to take your head out of your behind and look at what’s going on in this country.
I’m being called the crazy one even though people on this board, who know who they are, have suggested that black people will riot in the streets if Barack Obama doesn’t win. Now that’s what I call jumping to conclusions, because there has been no evidence to support the claim. Maybe you need to direct your little diatribes at someone who doesn’t have a grasp of the issues that you can easily confuse with your incoherent arguments, because you just made yourself look like a complete fool by coming at me.
Have a great day.

Shayna,
Since you did not address the arguments in the original post or subsequent postings, one must assume you concede them.
And I must say, your rhetoric is most convincing. We see the error of our thinking by such demonstrated eloquence as “take your head out of your behind” and and guttersnipisms such as [you all] “coming at me.”
Perhaps you find the posts incoherent because you had to stop and look up the “big words.” The original posting said nothing about evening the score, but simply noted disparate and similar treatment. The author of the article (Bookman) omitted (that means “left out” to people who have problems with big words and broadcast majors) similar instances of overblown media cases and rushing to judgment when it would have been better to wait to see how the case developed.
Even now you insist on writing about race and Obama when the points were not germane to the original histrionics post. It would have been better for you to say, as you did in your original response, that you did not like the coverage rather than bringing in unresponsive material such as the moldy corpse of Emmit Till, for example.
Sorry the posts were too multisyllabic.

“if Palin had avoided the questions…”
You mean the way she specifically during the VP debates said that she wasn’t going to answer the questions put to her?
And while we are talking about how loving the media has been to Obama, lets not forget how Obama’s minister was quoted out of context with the whole “God damn America” speech.
The reason you don’t see more of Obama’s dirty laundry? For four months it was aired on repeat, from the Rezko connection which turned out to be so much smoke with no fire, to Obama’s wife’s patriotism being questioned. Heck there was even criticism of Obama’s choice of beer and how badly he bowled.
Press bias? More like bias that doesn’t agree with your bias. Again, all you demonstrate with your claims that you are voting McCain is that the Republicans stuffed up so royally, that even largely anonymous message boards contain people too embarrassed to admit they are going to vote for them.
McCain was once a figure I respected. He spoke up against the evangelical nuts who want to take America and turn it into a Christian Saudi Arabia, but he has since embraced those same nuts.
You see it in Palin, who seems to be all of the bad that was in Obama, cranked up to the absolute worst possible degree, and with none of the good.
Obama has iffy acquaintances? Sarah Palin was found by a recent report to have abused her powers as governor of Alaska.
Obama is a bit green on foreign affairs? Sarah Palin claims being able to see Russia from her state is a qualification for dealing with Putin.
Obama can be a bit weak in interviews? Palin couldn’t handle Katie Couric. That interview was like watching someone being savaged by a miniture poodle puppy.
Obama lacks experience? Palin’s chief experience was as governor to one of the biggest pork barrel states in America, and as mayor of the meth capital of Alaska.
Obama’s church was a bit nutty? Palin’s church played proud host to a witch-hunter. A witch-hunter Palin boasted as having prayed “Make-a-way” for her to become McCain’s running mate.
Obama, as a black man raised by middle class parents who got a good education via scholarships and student loans, is frequently accused of being an arrogant elitist. In her first major speech, Palin claimed that community organisers don’t have responsibilities.
Obama’s wife once said she wasn’t always a patriot? Well Palin’s husband is a member of AIP, a political party that wants out of the union entirely. She is also on record for telling them to “Keep up the good work.”
McCain was reasonably beloved by the press, it is how he got to claim he was a “Maverick” for so long.
But when he picked an unknown who didn’t even know what the Bush doctrine was as a running mate, who is a flipping “teach the controversy” creationist, who wants to stop funding to research that may end up saving California’s olive industry, who supports hunting wolves by airplane, tried to get a librarian fired for saying no to banning books, fired a police chief for not firing someone her family had a grudge against, had women paying for their own rape kits in her stint as mayor, the list goes on, the press had to cover it - and it wasn’t going to be complimentary.
By trying to claim press bias here all you are trying to do is take the focus off of what is being reported about your candidate’s running mate, much like how conservatives and Republicans in particular do the same with claiming the courts are biased, the sciences are biased, the universities are biased, the textbooks are biased and frankly it gets to the point where it is easier to just say the facts are biased.

“So… explain to me again why a white person voting for McCain is a racist, but the 98% of blacks who will vote for Obama are not?”
No, they are not racists. They have never had a African-American candidate to vote for by now. In another 100 years, when various politicians of various ancestries have run for and been elected president, one may hope that everyone will agree to vote on the person who best represents them and not in color. By then, one may hope, there’ll have been some of everybody in that office and the “race” factor will be null and void.
So far, except for Shirley Chisolm’s token hat in the ring, all anyone has had to vote for has been WHITE MEN! Until now. Is it racist that only WHITE MEN have reached the candidacies? If you think about it, it’s either that both types of voting (blacks for a black and whites et al for a white) or that neither are. Sheesh! Grow up!
