A little early for a victory dance?

from Politico:

“Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg said Friday that his party is in position for “an earthquake election” come November 4.

“Nothing is going to look the same,” Greenberg said, joined by Democratic strategist James Carville at a breakfast with reporters hosted by the Christian Science Monitor.

Carville likened the Washington political environment to pre-Katrina New Orleans, saying that “there will be nothing left standing” after the election. He added that Republicans stand to lose “not just an election, but a generation of voters.”

“[John] McCain and [Sarah] Palin are losing the argument,” Greenberg said, pointing to favorable numbers for Obama on the campaign’s central issue, the economy.

“They are losing on their central arguments,” the pollster said of the Republican’s focus on tax cuts. “They can’t see that what they take for granted loses them independents.”

There’s also a classic Carville line at the end of the story that you’ll have to see for yourself.

Jay, I dunno.

Carville’s got it pretty sweet, considering that he makes big bucks to utter “classic lines” that most any of us coulda coughed up for free.

(I never thought Palin was going to break this thing open for McCain; I always thought there was a reason most of us had never heard of her.)

James Carville is so funny. A little whacko, but still funny. Good lines.

Yes, Jay it is too early for a victory dance. I don’t want to jinx things, you never know what voter irregularities we’ll see.

And you’ve got those out there like those in Michigan who are trying to suppress voters and I’m sure that isn’t the only place they are working.

You know, I heard something yesterday about Joe the Plumber wanting to get out of the spotlight.

Ahem. Cough. Cough. Clear my throat:

“Hey, Joe the Plumber, if you want to get out of the media spotlight - why don’t you get out in front of camera and stop giving interviews, and get back to work!

Huh?

“Interviewer: To clarify, so you support a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants?

Palin: I do because I understand why people would want to be in America. To seek the safety and prosperity, the opportunities, the health that is here. It is so important that yes, people follow the rules so that people can be treated equally and fairly in this country.

Needless to say, the wingnuts, those few mentioning it so far, are not at all happy.”

From Lorne Michaels, Saturday Night Live Big Guy, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly on Sara Palin:

“I think Palin will continue to be underestimated for a while. I watched the way she connected with people, and she’s powerful. Her politics aren’t my politics. But you can see that she’s a very powerful, very disciplined, incredibly gracious woman. This was her first time out and she’s had a huge impact. People connect to her.”

And Alec Baldwin, from an LA Times piece on Baldwin’s writing in the Huffington Post:

“he actor defended SNL against some people who apparently suggested the first female Republican nominee for vice president should never have been given such a national forum. After all the publicity surrounding Palin’s surprise pick and Tina Fey’s rendition of her, Baldwin asks: “What reality are you in?”

He noted that the long-running program, which had its best ratings in 14 years with Palin (and Baldwin), is, after all, a comedy show, not “Meet the Press.”

Then the actor added:

“When you come on a show like that, you are prepared in advance to get worked over. Palin knew that. Palin came on to be a good sport. And she was. She was polite, gracious. (More so than some of the famous actors who come through there, believe me.)”

No, really, that’s a direct quote”

Bosch - getalife

Well, there was a lot of outrage over the Wall Street Robber Barons. Lots of huffing and puffing. Lots of talk about accountability.

Then the talking heads moved on to something else.

‘Cept your favorite guy, Bill O Reilly. He said he’d take’em one at a time and expose them to keep them in the spotlight.

He sent one of the producers on an ambush interview - you know, the unannounced kind, which was derided here when used against Ms Tucker.

[[ Factor producer Jesse Watters tracked down former Merrill Lynch boss Stanley O’Neal, who led the company to ruin but exited with a severance package valued at more than $150 million dollars. O’Neal refused to answer any of Watters’ questions about his golden parachute or the people he harmed. The Factor put forth this reality check: “O’Neal maintains lavish homes in Westchester County, New York City and other places. He should be very ashamed.”]]

The producer badgered him with “what do you say to the people who lost their life savings because of decisions you made? You walked away with $161 million. Is that fair?” The guy never said a word.

I’m just wondering. How are Chris Mathews and Keith Olberman doing with applying some of their resources to following up on the outrage they expressed in holding these crooks accountable?

Paul,

I saw that quote (from Michaels) yesterday somewhere - but I still think Palin is a moron. In (one page :-) “The Bosch Book of All Things Wise” anyone who, even jokingly, takes being called a redneck as a complement, or the fact that she thinks she will be “in charge” (no really, that’s a real quote too) - of the Senate, well, uh, NO, she needs to go home and grow up a little.

And she also needs to realize that just because she’s the governor does not give her a free pass to fly her kids all over the damn country on taxpayer money (I was surprised she’d traveled so much personally) or let her redneck husband lose on the capital - walking around like the new sheriff in town.

The Palins are rednecks, and rednecks are second on the list (below fundamentalists of course - as #1) of “The Bosch List of Scary People Who Never Need to Be In Charge of Anything Other Than Their Checkbook.”

Oh, just pointing out as it true with most people in the news/entertainment/political worlds, there are good, not so good attributes and things they’ve done we like and things we don’t.

There are a few more who are all jerks than all saints, too.

Notice I said I record him and fast forward for the stories that look interesting - not the same talking heads making the same talking points I saw on two other shows.

But this is the kind of public service stuff I like. Even tying it to that embarrassing interview with Barney Frank - I think this whole affair just really teed him off. I think he phrased it “American played by the rules. They worked and saved and had faith in the system. And they got hosed by the crooks on Wall Street and their representatives who were supposed to be looking out for them.”

It’s a sentiment I like.

I agree with Carville - he should write for SNL. And I’ll break with observations about personal lives: we can all be thankful he and Mary Matalin never had kids. That’d be just a little too weird.

Hey, that reminds me. Why do we think Neanderthal rednecks are all conservatives? I was driving home after an appointment yesterday, turned on a talk show and heard a caller exclaim “I’m voting for Obama, I’d never vote for Palin. A woman like that, do we want her in office while she’s still having kids with all those menopausal issues? And she’s got that ree-tard (that’s how he pronounced it: ree-tard) kid she oughta be taking care of.”

Wow.

Jay - Hillbilly Deluxe

No offense meant. I was just thinking of how those two go after their interviewers and opponents (and each other), then thought about what it would be like if they had kids – which I now know they do. Kid gets home from school. Carville, eyes squinting, jaw forward, talking fast: “What’d you do in school today, huh?” Matalin, interrupting Carville: “nevermind that, did you keep your liberal teacher honest?” Carville, interrupting, squinting more: “Liberal? She’s progressive, unlike those private school elitists you had who…” Kid rolls her eyes and slips out to text with her friends.

As I said, I just thought it’d be a little too weird. But she’d grow up either really, really strong or slightly schitzo. And likely a member of the Green Party, voting for Nader, who’d still be running.

Sorry for the downer news, but it was another great day for the financial markets. The DJIA only dropped another 312 points.

For those keeping score, the Dow is down just over 25% in about four weeks and right at 40% in one year.

Let’s see how the American people are really voting:

The New York Times Co. reported a steep drop in third-quarter profits on Thursday, the latest gloomy earnings report in an industry battered by online competition and falling print advertising revenue.

Moody’s changed the rating outlook for the company to negative from stable in July. A further downgrade would reduce it to junk status. Both companies said the moves were based on the uncertain outlook for newspaper advertising.

People are tired of hearing the liberal BS, reading about how much they and their country suck and that these elite snobbish blowhards think they are a bunch of rednecks.

More’s the pity. I guess that’s what happens when you’re used to talking points and slogans - they get used in a real conversation. It’d have been more appropriate, and understandable, if he would have said, after reminding Joe where he was five years ago, before he had the resources to buy a business, that we have to ‘spread the opportunity around so people with dreams like yours don’t have to wait years to make them happen.’

Like I’ve said, I don’t think either his advisors, or McCains, are serving them as well as they could.

Frankly, this entire debate drives me a bit bonkers. A hallmark of the American Income Tax system is a progressive tax, but how much is up to debate. The tax code is used by both parties to advance an agenda. Our entire system of rebates, credits, one pays more, another less, one person getting tax-free employer benefits and another not, and on and on is all about redistributing wealth!

The decent thing for those liberals who had praised McCain so much in the past would have been to maintain their respectful posture but express their preference for Obama based on policy grounds. But there was never any hope that the liberal pundit class would act decently. The past respect was founded largely on McCain’s willingness to stick it to Republicans. Once McCain became the Republican standard bearer, it was inevitable that these liberals would withdraw that respect.

Hoping to cover up their raw partisanship, liberal MSMers attempt to show that McCain has changed fundamentally. Lacking anything terribly concrete on which to base this claim — like, say, breaking a promise to fund his campaign through public financing — liberal pundits have resorted to crass intellectual dishonesty.-Powerline

I didn’t say anything about jobs or CEO’s. I was giving you some helpful advice about working an electorate. If you’re doing GOTV you stay in pockets of your heaviest support and each voter you get to the polls is likely one more vote for your candidate.

On the other hand if you’re trying to convince people you go into areas that are less favorable to your candidate and talk them up. For every voter you can turn it’s like getting two votes for your candidate. Of course you have to be able to string together a coherent thought if you hope to convince anyone.

Meanwhile his finger pointing staff is imploding as their relationship with the RNC is nearly dysfunctional with little high-level contact and intelligence-sharing between the two.

A circular firing squad is among the most familiar political rituals of a campaign when things aren’t going well. But it is rare for campaign aides to be so openly participating in it well before Election Day.

I know it’s off topic jay, but good grief! dancing on a pole can be exhausting.

I was reading this morning where OPEC would cut production, and I thought…..HEEEYYYYY! that wasn’t supposed to happen. Hurried over to Stratfor late this afternoon.

Saudi Arabia could well do what it has often done in the past, and essentially implement the bulk of OPEC’s cuts for the entire cartel. But that cannot be taken for granted this time around, and it is unclear who else in the cartel would be interested in taking the hit. In October 2006, OPEC announced a cut of 1.2 million bpd when oil prices started to flag, but that reduction was never achieved. A second cut of 500,000 bpd announced that December was not attained either. Saudi Arabia ultimately only reduced production by just more than half the amount OPEC stipulated in the October cut.

Whether the cuts are implemented is far more important than where the cuts come from. But implementation of this announcement, like so many before it, is clearly not a foregone conclusion.

We shall see.

From a previous article The World According to Riyadh

The 1973 oil embargo was the first time Saudi Arabia learned what it meant to use oil as a tool of foreign policy. The Venezuelans ultimately knocked the legs out from under the embargo when Caracas decided to fill the gap by increasing its own oil exports. But nonetheless, the Saudis developed a taste for using oil as a weapon. In the 1980s, the Saudis, in private collaboration with the Americans, shifted gears and increased oil production to flood the markets. The Saudi move was one of the variables that helped bring about the collapse of the Soviet Union, allowing the Saudi Arabia to drive a major competitor out of the energy market for a good ten years and dismantle what was at the time the greatest foreign policy threat to the West in one fell swoop.

I’d say an ally of sorts — one with their own strategic interests at play. If those interests serve ours as well, then okey dokey.

Keeping an eye on……

Stratfor is chock-full-o!

Pakistan: IMF the Only Option

An economically endangered Pakistan has little choice but to turn to the International Monetary Fund for assistance — a move that will come with political conditions.

Everybody needs to keep their money close to home for obvious reasons. But….

IMF loans require approval from the United States; therefore, an IMF loan would require Pakistan to reach an understanding with the United States on the war with the jihadists. This would partly explain Islamabad’s hesitation to sign up for another IMF bailout.

From the U.S. perspective, Islamabad’s financial mess is just fine, as it allows Washington to extract a concession the Pakistanis have avoided giving thus far — the ability to carry the war against the jihadists into Pakistan proper. Furthermore, it limits Pakistan’s ability to influence the negotiations with the Taliban. Normally, the West’s moves to reach a negotiated settlement with the Taliban would be cause for celebration in Islamabad because it would mean Pakistan would regain influence in Afghanistan that it lost in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. However, the opportunity to regain that influence has come when Islamabad is cash-strapped and not in a position to play the role it aspired to.

I love this stuff! It’s interesting to watch the dominoes fall.

It makes one wonder.

Example #2:

You work hard in your job (you do work, right?…Not just collecting welfare?…) and your employer rewards you with a $1000 raise for doing such a good job. Michelle on the other hand, has done a very poor job and should be demoted. Still, your employer comes to you and says, “I am going to give Michelle $200 of your raise and let you keep $800….Now, everyone will be happier right?”…..WRONG!!!

Still, it’s your PATRIOTIC DUTY, right? BS!!

As far as the economic crisis, it was started due to increased lending by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to lenders who could not pay back their loans and defaulted. Now, the Republicans (including McCain) wanted to regulate these fine institutions in 2004, but the Democrats (Frank, Pelosi, and the Anointed One himself) voted “NO”.

Now we find ourselves in this financial crisis and the ones who voted “NO” are now saying they will regulate government (yeah, right…..That’s like making the fox the watchdog of the henhouse!).

So, before blaming Bush (Who only SIGNS bills or VETOES bills), place the blame on those who did not ACT….The DEMOCRATS (they voted NO on the passage of this bill).

Now, I will wait until your reply, so you can try to spin doctor the truth (Like our Liberal-leaning Media) to make it fit your ideology.

I’m planning my victory dance - party at my house and we’re showing Blazing Saddles. The Sheriff is near!
