Obama right man for tough times
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The AJC’s endorsement of Barack Obama:
The 44th president of the United States will take office in an uncertain and dangerous time for this country. The challenges we face both overseas and here at home are complex and unfamiliar, and the road ahead is likely to be very different from the road we have traveled to get here.
Leading the country in such a time will require someone of intellect, creativity, honesty and passion for those traits that have made America great. That person is U.S. Sen. Barack Obama.
In the past eight years, the policies and ideologies that have animated the Bush administration have proved disastrous in almost every field of endeavor, from foreign policy to economics to relatively straightforward tasks such as responding to natural disasters. As a consequence, President Bush’s approval rating is as low as or lower than that of any other president in the history of polling.
Naturally, both Obama and his opponent, U.S. Sen. John McCain, have promised to take the country in a new direction. Both are honorable men fully qualified and competent to be president.
McCain, however, faces a hurdle in his claim to be an agent of change because he shares a political party with Bush. To offset that fact, McCain has wisely chosen to campaign on his reputation as a maverick, a reputation that he once fully deserved.
However, in his current role as Republican nominee, McCain has yet to explain how most of his proposed policies and approaches differ from those of the current president. From deregulation of Wall Street and tax cuts that favor the richest 5 percent of Americans to a more aggressive foreign policy, McCain’s approach now reflects the same Republican orthodoxy that has governed this country since 2000. Time and again, he has been offered chances to explain how his philosophy differs from that of the current president, and he has not been able to do so.
And it’s not just a matter of policies. A third term under another Republican president would inevitably be populated by much the same cast of GOP staffers, executives and bureaucrats that has run Washington for so long and with such disastrous results. McCain’s campaign staff illustrates that problem perfectly because it is populated by many of the same people who ran previous Bush campaigns. They are also still trying to run the same basic Republican playbook that the party has used since 1980.
In fact, the competence of McCain’s campaign staff is itself cause to question the candidate’s executive abilities. To some degree, the rigors of creating and running a campaign organization can be a test of the skills needed to create and run an administration. And even many Republicans acknowledge that the McCain campaign has been poorly organized and erratic, lurching from one crisis to another without the sense of a strong hand at the tiller.
Columnist William Kristol, a longtime McCain backer, calls the McCain campaign “close to being out-and-out dysfunctional,” concluding that “its combination of strategic incoherence and operational incompetence has become toxic.”
And of course, the most unfortunate evidence of that “strategic incoherence and operational incompetence” was McCain’s selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate, a person utterly unprepared for the high post in question.
The contrast with the campaign run by Barack Obama could not be more stark. More than a year ago, when he was still a long shot without much money, Obama somehow managed to attract a staff talented and disciplined enough to defeat Hillary Clinton and the Clinton machine in the Democratic primaries. It has since gone on to demonstrate a great deal of political discipline, skill and innovation, running a 21st century campaign that appeals to 21st century America.
Different challenges require different strengths. Obama has demonstrated a calm, thoughtful leadership style that fits this time and this challenge well. He has laid out a wiser, more measured approach toward foreign policy that elevates diplomacy and negotiation while reserving the use of force if necessary to protect this country and its allies in a dangerous world. He understands that international respect and admiration can’t be forced at gunpoint.
Economically, Obama is better equipped to deal with a rapidly changing global situation, and his policies focus directly on the problems confronting the American working and middle classes. His tax plan, for example, proposes to cut taxes on 95 percent of American households while raising taxes only on households with an income of more than $250,000. That plan may have to be adjusted in light of a harsh new fiscal reality, but it demonstrates where Obama’s instincts and values lead him.
The same is true of his health-care proposal. It requires a comprehensive approach, including financial assistance to help small businesses buy insurance for their employees. It would also require large employers that do not offer health insurance to help their workers with the cost of buying insurance on their own.
Those are new approaches, crafted by a new generation of leaders drawn to Obama by the chance to write their own chapter in the American story. Their time has come. His time has come. Obama is a leader of rare potential, and that’s precisely what the job of our 44th president demands.

I guess I could go look that up, but my gut tells me “”longtime”” in this case means at best a few months.
Do all these papers think these endorsements help? Maybe they should check out their own approval ratings.

Jay, if we don’t elect Senator Obama as our President, I fear for our great nation.
There are going to be hard times ahead, and we need someone with his intellect, capability and calm manner.
There is no way on earth that McStupid and Sarah, Queen of the Incoherent, could lead us through these treacherous times that await us.

Interesting poll going on right now on PBS. Question….. “Do you think that Sarah Palin is qualified to be President of this country”?. The results are at 49/49 right now but that is like asking the Drudge Report if they like Senator Ted Kennedy. Most of the listeners of PBS are liberal listeners except for this hopelessly addicted classical music freak and a poll like this on a public funded station is pretty far out. Do we need further evidence of the liberal media buying the presidency?

What a happy moment, to see the AJC praise and support a bi-racial candidate for president.
Besides that, Obama is better. Smarter, wiser, and has better advisors.
I like that he can laugh in the midst of troubles. I like that his personal background leads him to find common ground for problems that trouble us all.
I even like that he wants to put Americans back to work, building new bridges, inventing new solutions to our energy problems and I love that he will talk to all leaders, regardless of the differences we have. I would rather see a resurgent use of diplomacy than another war. We can use the money at home.

Honesty? I can’t imagine how one believes that’s an Obama trait. He’s had plenty of opportunities to be honest — about Wright, Ayers and Acorn, and the press has had plenty of opportunity to make him honest, yet to this day the most honest thing he ever said was “I think when you spread the wealth around, everyone wins.” I’m relatively poor (especially now,) but I still can’t accept that as an economic system codified by our government.

That was probably the clearest and most convincing newspaper editorial endorsement thus far. It’s time to turn the political page in America. This is not possible with another Republican who shares fundamental economic and international ideologies with President Bush. It’s time for the fresh ideas and new energy of Senator Barack Obama.

The AJC is not some eastern elite newspaper by any stretch. This endorsement will go far as will Colin Powell’s if it indeed comes tomorrow as might be expected. They endorsed him for the simple reason they stated, he has shown better leadership and decision skills than has McCain. Senator McCain is a great American, but that does not entitle him to the presidency. I pray that he is able to lead this country back together as we were in 2001 to the threats that we now face.

The Salt Lake Tribune, which supported George W. Bush in 2004, commented that “out of nowhere, and without proper vetting, the impetuous McCain picked Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate. She quickly proved grievously under-equipped to step into the presidency should McCain, at 72 and with a history of health problems, die in office. More than any single factor, McCain’s bad judgment in choosing the inarticulate, insular and ethically challenged Palin disqualifies him for the presidency.”

Gee, that sure looked like a “rag John McCain” column to me and not an endorsement of Oblahma.
I guess you had to fill space with something, considering that Oblahma’s lone accomplishment has been to beat Hillary in the primaries, as though all those Republican crossovers had nothing to do with it.
Dear America: Read this column, cut it out of the litter box liner tomorrow, past it on thee wall and let it be a continual reminder to you of what a totally empty suit this Oblahma really is.
Not one major accomplishment to stand on.
And kookman reinforces it for all to see.

Midori,
You seem to be stealing GMan’s stupid rhetoric. It gets old. Figure out some other dumb thing to say. Bottom line, the media is electing this president. There is evidence of that everywhere you look, listen and watch. Bookman, Katie, Charlie, Brian, Tucker, that moron on MSNBC with the leg thing, PBS……. we don’t want to watch or listen to much of anyone because of the bias. We can’t get a straight shot at much of anything. That makes you happy? It is evident by your posts. But is it fair? Katie and Company are appealing to a lot of that crowd that you pictured in your photo, 40% of whom could not identify the vice president of the United States. “It must true because Ophra said so”. I don’t think you are that stupid. You appear, at the risk of patronizing you, to be well informed and well read, despite being on the dark side. Do you like this crap? If the media was strongly on the right would you not be incensed and pretty upset about them selecting your president, especially appealing to an electorate who could not identify the state of Ohio on a map of the United States? They are more interested in who won American Idol than any of the candidate’s fiscal policies and we praise that? It just scares me to death and will put this country at greater risk than it has ever been. The picture is pretty impressive until you examine the people.

As much fun as it might be to take a swipe at one of the sillier posters here, I think this is the time to go on record and thank Jay and the whole AJC editorial board for working so hard to accommodate the crazy-@ssed variety of opinions that constitute Atlanta-based voters.
This is an area where something like the “Fair Tax” (for example) actually doesn’t get laughed out of town (however much it deserves to be), where you can still call a Democrat a “socialist” with a straight face and have a few “amens” from some within earshot.
This is also a place where a long-established black middle/upper class has developed into a very powerful, generally (though hardly always) progressive bloc, now being joined by a lot of transplants from the North and a boatload of immigrants from all over.
It’s, frankly, an interesting time to be here and I can’t wait to see how it all turns out.
Anyway, the regulars here all know I’m backing Obama. Whatever reservations I ever had, back in the Spring, about his toughness and readiness to carry a campaign to November and withstand the worst the Republicans might fling at him have completely evaporated. The man’s a skilled boxer and a great poker player; he seems almost always prepared for what’s coming and handles it brilliantly.
Policy wise, I’d like something a little stronger on healthcare (single-payer, sooner rather than later); I deplore the notion that a Presidential candidate has to pretend to be opposed to gay marriage (does anyone really believe he is?); I worry a bit that he’s gonna go LBJ on us in Afghanistan.
But that’s about it. Otherwise, he’s solid, and he’ll make a fine President. Maybe even a great one.

Obama maybe the only chance an African American will ever nominated to be Presidential Contender from now till end of the human race. When he wins, he can not afford to screw up. Everyone from people in the United States and around the world will watching his every move. So, he going to make best decisions from people giving him the best advice. He will make those decisions as President.
If he screws up, you know there will never be another African American President nominee, another minority group or even possibly a Democrat. The Democrats will with some Republicans will ensure Obama succeed. This maybe once in live time chance in the history of the United States.
If you choose McCain, the Republicans will keep throwing same old mine frame of people every 4 hears. We had 8 years of Bush Junior Failure, lies, unethical behavior and bad judgment. We had 4 years of Bush Sr failures. We had 2 of the 8 years of Reagan failures.
Let me see, are you going to choose a new direction Obama with necessity for change making the best decisions possible or another 4 more years of same old thing with McSame. McShame most likely was influence heavily by Neo-Cons Republicans to choose Palin. The same people going to influence and push McShame into following at least 75% of same direction as Bush. Every President since George Washington has gotten advise from others on running a country.
Obama is no difference. McCain is no different. Only difference is McCain will receive advice from mostly the same people giving advice to George W Bush. McCain will get advice from the same people or their lieutenants. McCain may use some sound judgment but Palin will follow everything advice of the Neo-Cons, ultra Right Wing Conservatives, Kato Institute, Milton Friedman Economics, and few others ultra Conservative Think Tanks. Those are the same people giving both the Bush advice and even some case pushing Clinton into following it.
Lastly, there has been past President with as much experience as Obama. Lincoln, FDR, Kennedy and some of our Founding Fathers to name a few. At least Obama went to two Ivy League University, Taught Constitution Law and travel the world.
One more thing, George W Bush has team of advisers with years and years of experience. Some with over 20+, 30+ years. Look, where all that experience has gotten us?
McCain, Palin and even some cases Biden see the world in pretty much the same way. At least, Obama can see the world outside the box more often than the other 3 and definitely any Republicans.

Fake voters are a myth, a convenient cover for those who really don’t believe in the universal franchise. (ACORN has been accused of fraudulent registrations; for actual voter fraud to occur, persons with those fake names would have to show up to cast ballots.) There is no evidence of people coming to the polls using false names and fraudulent IDs.
When you get a chance, look up Harold Washington, Chicago, google search “voter fraud” and “disastrous, failed administration” to see where this country is headed.
And just look at who is cheering it on.

1) You have the right to your opinion.
2) Sorry, but Gore and Kerry (politics aside) were in a different league tha Barry Obama.
3) A word of caution: be very careful about even insinuating in a post that someone assault the President. The Secret Service gets very uptight about such things. Trust me.

Tucker is living an another world, certainly not this one. The very idea of an organization that receives 40% of it’s funding from tax payer dollars seeming to have a right to skew voter election results and having no contrition about doing so. The height of arrogance and deceit. And she says that it makes no difference. I have always thought that she was a really dumb sh** but this proves it beyond a doubt. She sits behind a desk and writes this trash with no chance for the general public to rebut. No one says that an editor of a major news rag like this can’t have an opinion but this is really over the top. She must think that all of us are like the Mr. Wonderful clones and Ophra look alikes who walk in lock step behind the all knowing Cynthia. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Glad to see the AJC endorse Obama.
BUT
I’m still dancing about over the Chicago Tribune endorsing Obama. Never, NEVER in its 161 years has the Trib endorsed a Democrat. That’s a big damn deal.
IF YOU HAVE NOT DONE SO ALREADY…
Please vote early.
Oh, and send Obama 25 bucks.

Even if we assumed that both candidates matureness and knowledge were equal consider this. One is an energetic young man who could put in a 60 hour week and is in excellent health. The other candidate is 72 years old, probaly couldn’t work effectively for more than 40 hours a week if that many. Also consider this: if Mc Cain had to resign for health reasons Palin would be president. This is no joke. It’s our country. Let’s protect it.

Trouble in Paradise?
Saturday, October 18, 2008 Associated Press
HONOLULU — Hawaii is dropping the only state universal child health care program in the country just seven months after it launched.
Gov. Linda Lingle’s administration cited budget shortfalls and other available health care options for eliminating funding for the program. A state official said families were dropping private coverage so their children would be eligible for the subsidized plan.
“People who were already able to afford health care began to stop paying for it so they could get it for free,” said Dr. Kenny Fink, the administrator for Med-QUEST at the Department of Human Services. “I don’t believe that was the intent of the program.”

Well Taxpayer, it should be obvious that I am one of those who would ask for an explanation from Richardson as well.

Why is it that you support candidate OBlahMa when he supports Planned Parenthood’s racial genocide?
OBlahMa receives a 100% approval rating from that despicable organization.

Taxpayer:
A little info about my candidate and Planned Parenthood.
Regardless of where the issue rates in his priority list, Planned Parenthood has already taken aim at McCain, and they will continue to do so; its political-action committee is planning to spend some $10 million this cycle. Barack Obama is their dream candidate — he is the most radically pro-abortion candidate ever to run for the Oval Office; Obama even has opposed prohibiting clear-cut infanticide, because, in his mind, a just-born child should not be afforded the same rights as a nine-month old.
John McCain has an opportunity to legitimately use his record to differentiate between himself and Senator Obama in a way that will both help social and fiscal conservatives support him. Opposing Planned Parenthood funding meshes with McCain’s contention that abortion is a human-rights issue and his continuing campaign against wasteful government spending. Planned Parenthood doesn’t need or deserve federal funding. As Planned Parenthood continues to make news for lax practices harming children while raking in huge revenues, now is way past time to cut it off. John McCain has opposed taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood.
And for the record Taxpayer, I never said you were a horrible person, just weak on principles.

@@,
I know you think that you are an intelligent person and I also know that it is likely a misconception that you have developed as a result of your limited exposure to persons of average or greater intellect. That said, don’t try to deflect your own shortcomings by trying to avoid the very issue that you raised — guilt by association. Clean up your own back yard (here’s another one of those prime opportunities for me to pick from any number of appropriate labels for you, and I choose this time the word most appropriate for you, the self-righteous pro-life Republican), hypocrite. Now, have a good nightmare, that is if you REALLY do care about all those abortions in those poor neighborhoods right here in Georgia in your own back yard or maybe you are not being as truthful and honest with us as you should be. Maybe there’s more to you than meets the eye. After all, you didn’t even display any convincing alarm whatsoever to see that the Republican speaker of the house of the great state of Georgia is so pro-abortion. You didn’t know about it and you didn’t show any outrage at such despicable behavior and you didn’t say anything about writing him or your Republican party leaders or voting against any of them. All you profess to care about are the words of one anonymous blogger with the least possible amount of “power” to effect meaningful change, outside of my one vote that has to cover so much more than abortion especially at a national level. Further, since you claim to have already voted, I can see no need to try to convince you of the errors of your ways — not that anything short of a lobotomy would likely help you anyway. But, don’t you worry for I will vote against Glenn Richardson and the rest of the Georgia Republicans every chance I get and when people ask me why I’ll mention, just for you, that it’s partially for Glenn’s stance on abortion here in Georgia, OK. Now that’s what I’m willing to do to further support the cause of reducing abortions and I have you to thank for that so be proud of your efforts, @@ — they paid off.

What has Obama actually done in Congress to make you think he will actually cut taxes and magically still increase spending on some programs? How has he helped boast the economy while he has been in Congress? Again, what has he actually done? How has he actually cut spending? How has he demonstrated his political integrity to be above other politicians. He hasn’t! He has played to his buddies and brought “pork” to them. Same thing, just different individuals. In my opinion, the middle class is still going to pay the check. Just that even more middle class taxed moneys may be “re”distributed. Because you know if you have a h.s. diploma and work at an unskilled job you obviously deserve (by divine Obamanomics rights) the same everything as a highly education/highly skilled person. I do think everyone should make a livable wage and have benefits, such as health insurance, but not necessarily all the same. In my opinion, Obama talks a good game (he is so eloquent and he has the all important “presidential” look and strolling ability; like that should really matter) but hasn’t done jack regarding the economy during his time in Congress and he will change his tune once in office … but he walks really well.
