McCain closes Gallup gap, but debate may halt his momentum
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The latest Gallup polling puts the spread between Obama and McCain at six points, down considerably from the 11-point spread of a few days ago. I’m not at all surprised that the gap has closed, but I suspect that last night’s debate may squelch whatever momentum McCain might have been building.
Against his better political judgment, McCain let the GOP base bully him into attacking on the Ayers stuff, just as he earlier let them bully him into picking Sarah Palin. In both cases, he made the base happy at the expense of the rest of the electorate, and there’s every reason to think he would govern that way if elected. The “maverick” campaign has been anything but.
In the debate, McCain did go out of his way to try to separate himself from George W. Bush, and to some degree he succeeded. But as the debate went on, he reversed any progress he might have made in that direction by reiterating the same basic GOP ideology of the past 30 years. In essence, he argued that government is the problem.
McCain made that point bluntly. But as I mentioned last night, “the truth is that under these circumstances, he will probably lose because conservative principles just aren’t all that attractive to voters at this point in our history. After eight years of Bush, that approach has lost all credibility.”
Joe Klein of Time magazine, among others, makes the same argument:
“But 2008 has proved to be a new and frightening moment for the American electorate, and having the government help in finding, and funding, health care doesn’t sound like such a bad idea anymore. … This is simply not a good year to say, ‘Joe, take care of your health care yourself.’ It seems an impossible year for McCain’s Reagan Republican philosophy.”
The impact of the debate won’t start to be seen in polls until tomorrow’s three-day tracking numbers are released, and its full impact won’t be seen until Sunday. But I suspect we’ll see that gap start to widen again.

Now jay……haven’t you received your latest commandment from the messiah.
Barack OBlahMa — “For those of you who are feeling giddy or cocky and think this is all set, I just [have] two words for you: New Hampshire,” the Democratic presidential nominee said during a fundraiser breakfast in New York. “You know I’ve been in these positions before where we were favored and the press starts getting carried away and we end up getting spanked.

Our friends on the right are very sensitive and get their feeling hurt easily like McCain last night.
Their ideology has not changed even though it is a proven failure. w could run again and these kooks would vote for him. Look at the outcome not the ideology, it is a failure.
Lets hope the majority of sane and patriotic Americans will provide another thumpin like 06.

I still can’t get my mind around how a total incompetent like Obama is even this close to the Presidency. There can’t be that many mindless robots that could actually vote for a guy who consistently lies about his radical roots and ideology. He let his Marxist philosophy slip the other day with his comment about “spreading the wealth around” and , God willing, enough people will come to their senses and elect McCain.

McBush will be a terrible POTUS for the crisis that America finds itself in today. We need JOBS, JOBS, and more JOBS to get Americans back on their feet, and the same old trickled-on economic theories are as obsolete as the 20th century. McBush decided to appeal to the basest nature of his base, and he has lost those independent voters that he needs to win as a consequence of his decision. 20th Century Ideology for leading America is dead!

What is it with these Republicans and paying taxes. I mean, this Joe the plumber guy apparently cannot even pay the taxes that he owes under the Bush tax plan. What does he want, a free ride. Doesn’t he realize that the wars that Bush and McCain and Palin and other Republicans want us to fight in perpetuity actually cost money. Does he think that those new end-of-times fighter planes, the FU-2 Rapture, and their “special” payloads are produced free of charge? Does he think that soldiers fight for free? Does he think that loads of sand transported to Iraq are free? We taxpayers have to pick up the tab for these and many other things that our Republican politicians don’t like to talk about. So, exactly who are the taxpayers and who are the freeloaders under this no-tax-for-the-Republican-base plan of McCain’s. Who is supposed to pick up the tab.

It bothers me that Obama belonged to Islam until he married Michelle then he conveniently switched to the church of the “Rev.”??? Wright. If you can call that hate filled nest a church. Batten down thee hatches, Repugs, I think I know where this is headed:
When John McCain runs an ad with a white woman, Paris Hilton, in it, he is accused of racism. He runs an ad with Franklin Raines, the former head of Fannie Mae, in it, who is African-American, and that’s racist. And then he runs an ad with William Ayers, who is a white male, in it, and that’s racist.
If it weren’t so comical, these promiscuous accusations of racism, it would be tragic.-Krauthammer

LMAO!!! Desperation time! Everyone including Gallup knows the trends of the past are not the same this year. So much so they created a new category they think more accurately predicts the outcome.
(Btw, Zogby likely voters has Obama up by 5.5)
Of course the main focus should be on the electoral maps. A map that McCain has NO give with right now. He is well behind in every state that Kerry carried, and behind in some Bush states.
Gallup, Most likely voters, Obama +2
Gallup, Most likely, likely voters Obama +6
Gallup, Daily Standard Obama +6
Another thing, anything over a 1 point win for Obama will result in an official Democratic mandate. We’re just following the rules. The Dems will also be taking back that “political capital” Bush has been holding on to since the 2004 election.

Okay. reality check. for all of my fellow Americans out there who oppose Obama, please answer these questions. By the way, I’m a former Army Major, so go light on the democracy line:
Do you really believe that 10 to 12 billion a month in Iraq is a reasonable venture when your retirement, home, and local bank is on the line?
Do you believe that Obama is the cause of the curent mess at home and abroad?
If he is not, then who is?
Do you acknowledge that “W” had a Republican controlled Congress as he led this country from a surplus to a deficit and lied to the world about weapons of mass destruction?
Are you aware of John McCain’s record of changing spots to stripes and back to spots for political expediency?
Is the Country a better place today because of Republican control?
Before you answer that one, go take a look at your children and or grandchildren. they are counting on your answer.

Bush is unpopular because he 1. P** off Liberals on Liberal issues (a given) and 2. Paid lip service to conservative values, such as limited government, while expanding governments power and scope.
The Dems got angry and voted in 2006 as much as Reps got angry and stayed home. Because the current administration is un-popular, don’t believe that is the fault of conservatism. That would be an un-wise assumption.
The press likes to think because 93% of the country thinks we are headed in a wrong direction, we want Obama. Actually, many think his direction would be “out of the frying pan, into the fire.”

“I do not believe this is a rush to war. I believe it is a march to peace and security. … (Saddam Hussein) possesses chemical and biological weapons and is seeking nuclear weapons.” Biden continues: “We must be clear with the American people that we are committing to Iraq for the long haul; not just the day after, but the decade after.” Just shows ya that, nowadays, when the going gets tough, the tough run for office.

I doubt the McCain/Unavailable campaign will get much bounce from the last debate. McCain spent a lot of time sanctifying Joe the Plumber. Today, the media spent a lot of time hunting Joe down, only to find he has no plumbing license or $250,000. He does have, however, a couple liens for back taxes.
By invoking Joe, McCain reminded voters how hard he digs into an issue before choosing it as his VP. With Joe, he thought he had just the bomb to toss at Obama. It went off in his lap, and secondary explosions will continue until the election.

We are still waiting for the Annointed One to reveal his true birth certificate, valid hospital records from some hospital in Hawaii (there were two that his sister mentioned where he was born) and prove to us that he was not born in Kenya or lost his American citizenship when he moved with this family to Indonesia. He was known as Barry Lorento when registered in a Muslim school in Indonesia as an 8 yr old and since Indonesia does not recognize dual citizenship from any other country, American law voids citizenship from any citizen in this category. When he returned from Indonesia to Hawaii to live with his grandmother, he returned as not an American citizen but as an Indonesian citizen. He had an Indonesian passport listing his name as Barry Lorento and he was a muslim at that point. When he arrived in Hawaii, he changed his name to Barrack Hussien Obama and moved in with his grandmother as his guardian. He never registered as an alien when he came back to Hawaii and was no longer considered a citizen of the USA because of his Indonesian citizenship. Obama is really an illegal alien who never registered with immigration and is questionably a citizen of this country. He won’t show anyone his true birth certificate which he should have shown to any election commission upon registering for a primary to run for president of this country. Ref: www. Obamacrimes.com

Obama is a Marxist therotician. Here we are: just ask yourself who Bin laden or Hugo Chavez would support. Don’t the American People realize that the U.S. Gov moved most of their out year obligations off the books? We haven’t had a surplus and there is no ‘lockbox’. If the federal government was a business, the federal debt would represent expeditures that realized no return. All business did is copy their example and fudge their own books. No one in their right mind blames Obama for the past, but he is the past on steroids. And there’s plenty of film footage of all the leading Dems stating that Iraq had these weapons… and they knew it to be true because we sold’em to them. At this point though, are you willing to turn Iraq over to Iran? Just a simple Yes or No. I know the Repubs stink - primarily because they lost fiscal dicipline but hey - the American people have embraced Marxism and you can’t get elected anymore without promising some kind of set aside. Just wait until the Bond Market busts and the interest rate soars and the national debt explodes and it costs you $50 for a can of beans. You’ll look to the front of the wagon and the wagon pullers will be gone…gobbled up by marxist demagogues to buy votes. What will you do then?… bypass the Government, get your own gun and just go take your booty directly from the evil rich?

Okay Louis, let’s look at things: Iraq and $10 Billion a month, probably not, I;d prefer the Iraqi government take on a larger share of the costs of our being there. +1 Democrat
Obama being the cause, partially, he was and is still involved with ACORN who, together with Carter, Clinton, Dodd, Franks and a few others rigged the system so that unqualified buyers could get mortgages. That they had no realistic way to pay the loan back was immaterial. +1 Republican
Bush and Republican controlled Congress, yes, but also remember 9/11 and the immediate recession the country went into. Interest rates were lowered, money came into the market and went right back out. Jobs were created and things were going fine. That said, Republicans also spent like drunken sailors while they were in control. Since then the Democrat controlled congress hasn’t exactly shown themselves to be any less frugal with OUR money. Call it a draw.
McCain changing positions or as you call them “spots”, yes and he’s also a politician so it;s kind of Politics 101, say what you have to say in order to get elected. I didn’t hold that against Kerry so I won’t hold it against McCain either. Another draw.
Is the country a better place…NO but I also look at Congress that will in all likelihood end up with clear majorities in both the House and Senate. With a favorable rating of 17% or less and a leadership that for lack of a better term is totally incompetent, we as a country cannot afford to have a Socialist/Marxist as President. +Republican
I look at my kids and grandchildren and I see that they are growing up in a country that I find hard to believe is the same one that I grew up in. Political correctness gone amok, no such thing as civil discourse, social security in the hopper and a national debt that is an abject embarrassment. Add terrorism, socialism, and a few more ism’s and things don’t look good for the kids both mine or yours. Bottom line is I don’t think mcCain will make a good President, but I also think that Obama will be an unmitigated disaster. Advantage Republican

More voter fraud uncovered!
A recent Gallup poll in Sept showed voter identity in September as;
28% Republican
35% Democrat
35% Independent
Republicans are lying like mad on their voter registration forms. The break down is really;
32% Republican
35% Democrat
31% Independent
Turns out a good chunk of the Republican base is too embarrassed to admit to being a Republican and answered “INDEPENDENT.”
Yes, its that bad these days for Republicans. Proves also that they are heavy into the voter fraud.

The sign went up Sunday evening, bold black letters against the stark white background of the marquee at the Colony South Hotel & Conference Center in Clinton: “Country First. McCain/Palin.”
Many local supporters of Democrat Barack Obama, jolted by the message as they headed down Branch Avenue on their Monday morning commutes, grabbed cellphones and BlackBerrys to notify friends. Operators of neighborhood e-mail group lists cried foul to their memberships. The NAACP logged calls. Community leaders demanded boycotts of the hotel, a common venue for Democratic events.-WaPo

Democratic Socialists of America believe that both the economy and society should be run democratically—to meet public needs, not to make profits for a few. To achieve a more just society, many structures of our government and economy must be radically transformed through greater economic and social democracy so that ordinary Americans can participate in the many decisions that affect our lives.
Sooooooo careful to not place Oblahma’s name any where on their webpage, but yet, these little jewels are on prominent display:

All of you whining little Republicans had better get out to the voting booths and make sure you get pictures of everyone that votes so you can cross check all the photos and make sure that the same person did not vote at least once, if not more, in every precinct in every county in every state. This could be big, really big, really really big. This could be the proof that the Republican party has been searching for — proof that the entire Democratic party is in fact just one person voting millions of times. Now get out there and make your case, Republicans. Your leaders need you now more than ever to save their sorry buttocks. They are depending on you so don’t let them down.

Hey TN and friends, I wrote this for you guys, since most of you are probably too illiterate to actually write something for yourselves…..
Here is the preamble for your new constitution:
We the liberals of the United States, in order to form a more fair union, establish monetary equality, insure nobody gets their feelings hurt for by being told that they are partially responsible for their own situation, stop providing for the common defense and instead promise to eat oreos, nutter-butters, and drink milk with the thugs of the world so we can better understand why they hate us, hyper-promote every area of welfare, and deny the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our conservative brethren, do un-ordain and dis-establish this trashy Constitution for the United States of America, in order to form our new nation, the United Socialists of America.
Good Luck….to quote Samuel Adams….
“If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.”
What I think he means by loving wealth more than liberty is that it leads to jealousy - and that jealousy will cause you to end this experiment in liberty to insure that no one can have more than you.
I am, probably for the first time in my life, going to be ashamed of my fellow Americans - never did I think that a communist would be in the white house - and all because all of you people think the government should take care of all of you - and if that’s not possible then the government should use it’s full force to rob others and give to you - because you don’t have the balls to try and steal it yourself.

The rightwings disdain for Ayers stems not from his planned attacks, but rather his position as pioneer in education. After all, there is no threat greater to the Republican base than the education of the electorate. The redstates dominate the bottom of the SAT rankings every year. The horrible state of education down south assuring this, the rightwing is able to keep captive the hoards of ignorate votes that continue to keep the wealthy brain of the party well stocked in houses, cars, and stupid, yet very hot, women.
Nothing makes a Republican politician smile more than towns full of dummies, eagerly awaiting the snake-oil cart.

The Great Republican Crack-up of 2008
With markets crashing and the economy sinking, McCain shows up at another debate looking angry and nasty, his face tense with some inner contempt that dominates his presence, throwing tiresome slops of mud to voters who hunger for reassurance and substance, his face twisted and eyeballs rolling like Karloff in the horror movies. Obama by contrast is Frank Sinatra during his mellower moments, or even better, Tony Bennett by starlight, looking cool in a crisis, calm in a storm, the serious man for serious times, calmly unflappable. Obama talks about healthcare while McCain talks about Ayers. Obama talks about education while McCain talks about ACORN. Obama talks about jobs while McCain grunts and snarls and sighs in ways that are devastating to him on split-screen television.
It is the great Republican crack-up of 2008. Republican economics brings the nation to the brink. Republican fearmongering erodes the very confidence essential to the markets while turning off whole swaths of independent voters. A Republican president, whom McCain supported 90 percent of the time, disappears during an economic crisis, sneaking into fundraisers through the back door to hide his support of his anointed heir from voters who demand powerful change.
keep it up, Republicans. PLEASE!!!

Liberals haven’t had so much fun in decades.
Aside from the dwindling size of our 401(k)s, life is treating us well. True, we’re heading into a major recession. But that’s OK: That just presents us with new opportunities to Do Good. And while we wait for President Obama to bring us New Deal 2.0, we’ll also get a few giggles out of watching the Bush administration preside over the nationalization of the nation’s financial sector. (Tip: Practice saying “social democracy.” Also, practice saying “Told ya so!” with compassion.)
Maybe most fun of all, we’re getting to watch a steady procession of rats leaving the sinking GOP ship.
One by one, the nation’s more reputable conservatives have been edging away from the Republican presidential ticket. It started with John McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate. Thinking conservatives — as of a couple of months ago, there were still a few left — were distinctly underwhelmed. In the New York Times, David Brooks chastised McCain for “throw[ing] away standards of experience and prudence” by picking Palin. In the Washington Post, Charles Krauthammer said Palin was “not ready” for prime time. David Frum, a former Bush speechwriter and fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, complained that Palin had “thoroughly — and probably irretrievably — proven that she is not up to the job.” In the National Review, conservative columnist Kathleen Parker said Palin was “clearly out of her league” and urged her to “bow out.”
For liberals initially alarmed by McCain’s brief post-convention poll bounce, this was fun. And as conservative disdain spread to the whole GOP ticket, the fun got even funner.

What’s a girl to do besides read Stratfor?
A tidbit from Stratfor. Pakistan is broke, they’ve gone begging to China now.
And despite Islamabad’s requests to bolster ties with Beijing amid increased friction with Washington, China is hesitant to follow through with these actions at the moment, or with anything much more substantial. In fact, it is this tension that has Beijing worried and reticent. If the United States no longer sees Pakistan as a responsible ally, but instead as a battleground, China must think twice about bolstering the Pakistani government in any way that could give Washington a reason to shift pressure from Islamabad to Beijing. China has demonstrated its willingness to subtly step back from its partners in the face of U.S. pressure before — it reduced its dependence on Iranian oil during the U.S. push to stem Iranian nuclear developments.
Beijing does not want to end up being seen as a stumbling block in Washington’s attempts to bring about a conclusion to the war in Afghanistan. Chinese leaders remember the “accidental” bombing of the Chinese embassy in Serbia, at a time when China may have been allowing the Serbian regime the use of communications facilities in the embassy compound. That incident caused China to reconsider the value of playing around too far from home, especially in areas that put it crossways with Washington and are not key strategic interests.
I have a hard time understanding China. Just can’t figure ‘em out.

After considering this, even as shockingly insane as it sounds, I tend to agree.
The faux conservatives refuse to see or acknowledge anything remotely problematic with the performance of not just these men in arguably the worst administration ever, and their repudiated ideology, but also of the “faithful” boot lickers who still soldier on in the name of Republican intolerance and demagoguery like our very own Suxbad Chambless.

Hi Jay.
I have a question for you. It’s a question that I keep trying to get a Republican to answer but so far I have had no takers. What is the Republican plan for paying for the Bush Administration’s expenditures on the wars on terror, the prescription drug plan, and the wall street bailout, etc., and the desired reduction or elimination of corporate taxes, capital gains taxes, dividend taxes, income taxes, AMT, and estate taxes? How many years do they think we can borrow our way to pay for these things. I suspect that their real plan is to force the elimination or drastic reduction in social security (wasn’t the first real reduction in entitlements brought about during the Reagan administration) and medicare and other government programs by essentially forcing the government into a near bankrupt state and then giving us the sales pitch about how it’s the only way to save our great nation from being carved up and dished out to the Arabs, Chinese, Russians, etc. Then again, maybe we’re already there. It really wouldn’t take much to finish pushing this busload of US citizens over the cliff, given our current economic state.

I don’t understand with all the glorious socialist states in the world - China, Cuba, North Korea, you guys can’t just all ship off to Nirvana?
All that I, and most of the people I know, want to do is work my tale off and try to create a better life for my family - why should I have to create a better life for your family when you are unable to? At what point did that become what this great country is about? When did I become my brothers keeper - not that I wouldn’t help out, but why must you use the fear of the government to take from me what is not yours and award it to yourself?
You wonder why there is so much disdain for you from this side of the argument, how would you feel if we were neighbors, you had just bought your kid a new bicycle for christmas and you new that I crept in during the middle of the night and stole it? That’s how I feel about you guys trying to vote in someone that wants to increase my taxes at every single turn - and take 45% of what is left when I die.
I loathe laziness - I believe that the only reason that anyone is not successful in this country is a combination of poor decision making and laziness. Make better decisions, live a better life - I understand it is easier to hold your breath and stomp your feet until good old uncle obama takes the sucker away from the child who bought it and gives it to you, but I guess you can do whatever you want if you have no self pride - eat another bag of pork rinds, drink another Colt 45, and wait on your robber-baron president to send you your goodies -
Laziness, political correctness, and an irrational fear of being labeled a racist has already destroyed what was once a great nation anyway.
Republicans suck, democrats suck worse, and we have no other options - - - -

So if I find that someone mocked up a bill tinged with all sorts of racial stereotyping, find it offensive, and am willing to call it what it is then in your eyes I’m a klansman?
If I don’t then I bet you think I’m a klansman too.
Good luck with that! One wonders if calling people klanners is taunting? Probably not.
On another note, are you like an ACORN worker for Nielson tonight? How much does it pay to ask people on blogs what they’re watching on TV and write it in your little rating book?
If it helps get you a buck or two I’m watching the ALCS and plan to check out Letterman later.

Off topic, but so are all of you. A little something that I found inspiring. No political biased. And nohe is NOT using a teleprompter, well I don’t know.

“It’s an outrage that the Obama campaign and the media are attacking Joe the Plumber for asking a legitimate question of a presidential candidate. This is why voters still have so many questions about Barack Obama. Instead of answering tough questions, his campaign attacks average Americans for daring to look at the reality behind his words, said Tucker Bounds, spokesman the McCain-Palin campaign. “John McCain will continue to fight on behalf of all hardworking Americans like Joe for policies geared toward increasing prosperity and reducing the burden on taxpayers — not ’spreading the wealth around’ for Senator Government to distribute as he sees fit.”
Is there a little divine intervention going on here? First we have JtP being solicited by Obama to ask a question and Obama letting loose his Marxist answer. Then we have the world’s most descriptive gaff getting some play. Senator Government, indeed!

RW,
good luck sucking on that ACORN.
not that you’re gonna get too much mileage out of it.
all it’s gonna do is bruise your tongue. again.
funny - you’re the expert on “mocking”. good luck with that, too.
you and I both know what that racist witch was up to when she made those bills.
and yes, in my eyes, you are ALL klans men. and women.

Well, I am changing the subject BUTTTT..
Is Luckovich letting his children draw his cartoons? They get worse and worse. Today’s is not clever. Just childish.
And…
Bookman, McCain was the WINNER in this last debate. Sorry you did not notice, but Gallup did.
Oh, I saw that a liberal here wrote that Ayers, the ‘reformed’ American terrorist and Obama friend, was just a professor trying to improve education. I wonder what Ayers teaches? Bombanomics?? He said he wished he could have done more. It seems The NYC Police Dept, the Capitol and the Pentagon did not satisfy his yearning to blow up America.
Obama surely did know how to find strange friends. You really ought to read up on Ayers.

getalife,
Going into the LCS games I picked both Philly and Tampa Bay. Unfortunately you also had to correctly call the number of games and I had Philly in six and Tampa in seven.
Looks like both in five.

How long do you think it’d take for Alan Keyes to become a socialist, that consorted with 1940’s era Nazis, that got caught cross dressing at a kindergarten? Alan Keyes, Colin Powell, J.C. Watts, Herman Cain, and any prominent African American knows that if they want their names to remain unsullied, they’d better stay away from the POTUS position. I’ll be mighty surprised if Barack Obama doesn’t do a lengthy jail sentence for stomping ants, if he loses this election.

By now pretty much everybody has decided which candidate they want to vote for — including some who won’t vote. I’m wondering who these “undecideds” are, and what it will take for them to decide.
Are the “undecideds”lying? Just back from alien abduction? Plain stupid?
Will they be able to find their polling places? Will someone pin their names on their shirts?

Greg,
The undecideds are all of the above and ACORN is only too happy to “help” them.

When asked at the time to produce one instance of McCain deploying race, the Obama campaign could not. Yet here was Obama firing a pre-emptive charge of racism against a man who had not indulged in it. An extraordinary rhetorical feat, and a dishonorable one.
Oblahma lies about his past, lies about his voting record, lies about his policies.
But he did tell us he would spread the wealth around.

Now the Urinal is attacking the little guy:
Turns out that the man who was held up by John McCain as the typical, hard-working American taxpayer isn’t really a licensed plumber. And court documents show the suburban Toledo, Ohio, man owes nearly $1,200 in back taxes.
So what does this have to do with Oblahma “spreading the wealth around?”
Savages.

[[Against his better political judgment, McCain let the GOP base bully him into… picking Sarah Palin.]]
This was the surprise announcement, greeted by “Sara Who?” with the press saying “wait, wait, we don’t know about her, we haven’t vetter her!!!”
and you assert McCain picked her because he was “bullied into it by the GOP base?”
Recommendation: Starbucks. Double espresso at 4pm.
