Stage set for final debate
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Dow Jones average fell more than 700 points today, the second largest fall in market history. (The largest fall came just two weeks ago.) Roughly 90 percent of Americans now believe our country is headed in the wrong direction. Tonight, the two men vying for the right to lead us out of this mess meet for their final debate.
And what’s the biggest question? Whether they will talk about some aging radical from the ’60s.
Discuss. We’ll put a fresh thread up just before the debate commences.

I wish they’d talk about some aging preacher from the last twenty years.
Or maybe Oblahma’s position on drilling holes in the heads of baby’s and should that fail to kill them, throwing them in the trash while still alive.
We shall see.

From the wire again:
Faced with perhaps his last major opportunity to shake up the race, McCain needs to find a way to unnerve Obama, strategists say. He could coax out the prickly side of the Illinois Democrat’s personality, the one that surfaced in New Hampshire when he told Hillary Rodham Clinton that she was “likable enough.”
Or maybe the moderator does McCain’s work for him, asking the kind of character-based questions that rattled Obama in the last debate before the Pennsylvania primary election. Some strategists say McCain should consider making a narrative-upending announcement, such as a one-term pledge, or ignore the debate format and lob questions at Obama.
Without a teleprompter, The Token One may get confused; but, he has shown an uncanny skill to veer off the subject matter and never answer any question directly. I give Mccain 1 in 4 chances of pulling it off, but if he does…………..

Who cares. The media won this thing weeks ago by slandering McCain and Palin while puffing up their candidate. If by some miracle McCain makes a comeback, the media will find some other excuse to slam him.
Congrats to our lords and masters in the media. I hope Obama is a better President than they are journalists. But that won’t be hard.

How about the way we treat kids who are already born?
Like my son, who is 7.
Now, I live INTOWN, in a very liberal part of intown. Obama signs abound (Obama Obound?).
I also live on a busy street, one that many people who commute to their jobs intown use as a cut through.
I was standing in my front yard with my son. We were out there to install an Obama sign. My son, who I mentioned is 7, was holding said Obama sign.
We were also talking to our next door neighbor, who put up their Obama sign last week. While we were talking my son was waving the Obama sign at the people passing by.
Most people honked and waved.
However, one woman who looked to be about 50 and who was with another woman who looked to be about 80 were passing by in a small SUV (like a Honda). She slowed and I smiled, thinking she’d wave like the people behind her were doing.
She gave us the FINGER!!!!!
She gave me, my neighbor, and my 7 year old son THE FINGER.
Nice family values, eh? But I guess that was LAST election, not this one.
And perhaps she thinks that by supporting Obama I must not have family values. Perhaps she thinks my son is a terrorist.
He’s a terror….like most 7 year old boys who love to play football and therefore think everything in sight must be tackled.
But he’s not a terrorist. And neither am I. We’re just an upper middle class white family, is all.
And we’ve already voted for Obama.

McCain’s problem is that there is simply no room for a moderate in today’s Republican Party.
None whatsoever.
To be a “good” Republican, one absolutely must be intransigent to the point of pigheadedness. Compromise is not allowed, as it considered defeat. Progressiveness of almost any sort, on almost any topic, is viewed as evil liberalism. Complete fealty to the party’s power brokers is required.
Dogma and demagoguery are the tools and tactics of this imploding GOP. And the blood lusting, hate-mongering chickenhawks who make up the “base” are the lackeys who eat it all up.
And epic, humiliating defeats in national elections are to become their blueprint.
Let us hope for another “Mission Accomplished”..

That cry-baby strategy really worked well for Nixon back in ‘73 when his administration was imploding, too, yes??? It’s just amazing to me that some right-wingnut trolls here are echoing my dad’s same lament way back in 1972. Same lame arguments were used 35 years ago. Mike,
I’m sorry you feel that way. The one McCain sign in my neighborhood (there might be more than one but on my various jogging routes I’ve only seen the one) has remain unmolested and I’ve seen the guy out on his lawn conversing very comfortably with his neighbor with the Obama sign.
But then, Candler Park is pretty close knit and a lot of people have kids who are friends and go to school together. It wouldn’t be neighborly to behave that way.
Just put your McCain sign close to your house where people have to be VERY gutsy to come swipe it.
And PLEASE…just don’t get a McCain/Palin sign. I totally get why people like McCain. I liked him a hella lot in 2000. It’s only been since this campaign that I’ve been disenchanted with him. But I do get why people would still like him enough to support him.
But HER? She’s not even like him! She’s terrible. I say this as a Hillary fan…you know, that really powerful, strong, opinionated, ballsy lady people hate? Hillary would NEVER flirt her way to the top. And no comments about her looks because there was nothing wrong with Hillary’s looks when she was a young woman. I happen to be a babe (it’s true…the whole size 6, d-cup, long red hair thing, runners legs)…but I have achieved success in my career using by brain and keeping a strict professional attitude. It OFFENDS me that this woman would behave this way.

Oh my God! I live in Decatur and believe me, if I were to find another McCain sign in the neighborhood it wouldn’t be there very long.
Last time we found a McCain sign a couple of us ripped it out of the ground, tore up the sign, and broke the post in two. We ditched it to the side of the road next to the rest of the trash on the street. It looks really really bad right now as my fellow neighbors have spit on it and the dogs have turned it yellow.
Lol, that poor old lady that lives there has said nothing about the Obama signs now prominently displayed on her nicely manicured lawn.

Better drinking game.
Everyone drink when you hear “my friends” “fundamental”, or fundamentally”.
I want to hear either candadate say something constructive about the economy. Something about the regulation of all this money being thrown at wall street. When we will get a return on all these stocks, banks, automobile, and insurance companies we own now. I want some honesty, do you think this will work or will things get worse before they get better?
Both candadates need to realize that W is now trying to reduce the number of troops in Iraq, so maybe we can win the war that we were supposed to be fighting to start with.

Here something for AJC:
McCAIN: “We have to stop sending $700 billion a year to countries that don’t like us very much.”
THE FACTS: This is a reference to U.S. spending on oil imports. McCain has repeatedly made this claim. But the figure is highly inflated and misleading. According to government agencies that track energy imports, the United States spent $246 billion in 2007 for all imported crude oil, a majority of it coming from friendly nations including neighboring Canada and Mexico. An additional $82 billion was spent on imported refined petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel and fuel oil. A majority of the refined products come from refineries in such friendly countries as the Netherlands, Canada, the United Kingdom, Trinidad-Tobago and the Virgin Islands.

Jen at 815p, you are such a presumptive tool. There could be many explanations why the old lady gave you the FINGER (as if this event ever took place, but for arguments sake, we shall pretend it did).
1) maybe your kid rode a bike through her flower bed
2) maybe you drove your car across the corner of her lot, running over a McCain/Palin sign, and she saw it
3) maybe she just looked at you, and didn’t like the way you looked, or your youth
4) maybe you or your kid gave her the finger first when you saw her Mccain/Palin bumper sticker
Anyway, in the larger scheme of things, so what? My neighbor has already had a car vandalized while she was in the grocery store, presumably (by your logic) because she had a McCain/Palin bumper sticker.
There are baaaaad apples on both sides, whether your story is true or not. So, if true, get over it. If not, then “liar liar pants on fire”.
