How a PSC candidate cheated you of millions

One of the more important races on the ballot pits Lauren “Bubba” McDonald against Jim Powell for an open seat on the Georgia Public Service Commission. Voters who cast ballots in that race based on party identification alone may do themselves a great disservice. Here’s why:

Back in 2001, PSC members were trying to set electricity rates charged by Georgia Power. A lot of money was at stake: Georgia Power wanted a $100 million rate increase, while some PSC staff members advocated $400 million in cuts.

At the time, McDonald was PSC chairman. At the last minute, he proposed a surprise 40-page agreement that he supposedly drafted himself and hadn’t shared with anyone, even members of his own staff.

In the interests of fairness, McDonald said, he would adjourn the hearing to give Georgia Power lawyers time to read over his plan. When they returned, they pronounced themselves satisfied with the deal, which the commission quickly approved. It cut Georgia Power rates by only $5 million a year.

Later, McDonald was defeated for re-election in 2002 by Republican upstart Angela Speir. In the six years since then, Speir has been a powerful advocate of reform and ethical behavior on the PSC. Thanks to a little detective work with e-mail and public documents, she also helped expose what had happened in the 2001 rate case.

Remember the deal that McDonald allegedly wrote himself? It had actually been drafted almost word for word by Georgia Power lawyers — the same lawyers later allowed to read the “surprise” document — and e-mailed to McDonald to propose as his own. Not only had McDonald secretly done the utility’s bidding, he created a lie to hide that fact from the Georgia public.

Unfortunately, Speir has decided not to seek re-election. McDonald is trying to regain his seat, and has switched party affiliation to run as a Republican this time. He is also collecting a lot of campaign money from utility lawyers and employees. Speir, a longtime Republican, has endorsed Democrat Jim Powell.

“If you look at Bubba McDonald’s [financial] disclosure, it reads like a Who’s Who list of utility lobbyists and lawyers,” Speir says. “If Georgia consumers want to have a voice that is not beholden to the utilities, then I firmly believe that Jim Powell is the best candidate.”

Powell is experienced and knowledgeable on energy issues, having retired as a U.S. Department of Energy executive. Just as important, he will bring an independent outlook to the commission at a time when the PSC may be asked to approve multibillion-dollar investments by Georgia Power and others for nuclear and coal plants. If Georgia voters want somebody to look out for their wallets and pocketbooks, Powell is the clear choice.

Is it true that McDonald has had issues with alcohol in the past? That would question his character, though, and ability to serve.

But wait, he is a politician, and as demonstrated so clearly by the supporters of Bill Clinton, if you do your job, then character doesn’t matter. And now he is a traitor, having switched parties ‘just to get elected.’

And certainly the legendary Teddy Kennedy did have major issues with alcohol, yet look how long he has served the moronic masses of the People’s Republic of Massachusetts? Didn’t he also win some kind of swimming award years back? What a hero for them!

And Jay, the headline for this article is “Powell’s Priority is Your Wallet”; should that not be about how he wants to get into your wallet? After all, he is a Democrat, and a Democrat never met a tax hike he didn’t like.

Please don’t insult us any further by trying to stylize your articles on individual races and try to show that you are a broad thinking writer.

Say what you mean and mean what you say …. just go ahead and tell everyone to vote straight Democrat this year, because that’s what you want.

All of your merry little band of trolls are going to vote straight ticket anyway. They are too stupid not to, or too lazy to check up on who they are voting for, so will do the same.

All of the blacks are voting Obama, because he is black, period. 95% racial support at last poll. Racist, pure and simple. Most of his white support comes from either the socialist left, sprinkled with the ‘white guilt’ crowd, Bush-haters, Hollywood elitists who actually believe their opinions have value, former terrorists like Bill Ayers, and of course, the overwhelming masses who are too dependent on government not to hope for more assistance.

Obama played the race card months ago, saying there are those who will not vote for him with his “I don’t look like the guys on the dollar bill..” remark. He was never called out on it. Scaredy cat and imbedded media choose to ignore racism from The Token One.

If McCain said he needed votes and would take support simply because “I look like the other guys on the dollar bills…”, the outcry from you leftist loons would have been heard from here to Jupiter. However, imagine this, if you will…. if a white ‘silent majority’ does show up on election day……… has you leftists scared sh##less, doesn’t it? You just can’t poll out that kind of unknown variable, can you?

BTW, a Fox News poll, curiously enough, just a few days ago had a puzzling set of numbers. Granted, they polled amongst their viewing audience, conservative in nature. And it was taken from the group classified as most likely to vote.

Results, on a national level?
McCain 64% Obama 34%

Put that in your crack pipe and smoke it.

That would be, more precisely, energy companies controlled by arrogant, greedy, obnoxious people who, not surprisingly, have much in common with those in control of many other large corporations. They certainly have no problem with buying politicians or with finding politicians to buy. The Republican party just happens to be where those willing to be bought have amassed in recent years. McDonald, Chambliss, Gramm…a who’s who of bought and paid for puppets.

Well this is certainly a strange kettle of fish. Day after day Jay B subjects us to poll after poll after poll indicating that nobody but a few garden slugs are going to vote for Republicans. He now sounds a warning to beware of voting for a party label which empirical evidence would seem to say he was telling all you Democrats to resist the urge and vote for the Republican, but the “Republican” in the story sounds corrupt and downright evil.

One can only deduce that Jay B either comes down on the side of corruption and evilness or he doesn’t believe the polls he shakes in our faces three or four times a day.

If occasionally Jay would remove the patch from his left eye; occasionally turn his un-erring vision of what is wrong onto the Left; then maybe we could look at some of his attacks on the Right with an open mind.

Rhetorical question - is there EVER an end to the countless screw ups this administration can foist on the country?

Apparently BushCo is not QUITE finished with some last minute payoffs to their monied masters:

In a move that would set a dangerous precedent for roadless areas across the country, the Bush Administration is pushing to remove protections for over 4 million acres of Colorado’s roadless backcountry forests.

The proposed plan would leave some of the state’s most valuable watersheds, trout streams and recreation lands without strong federal protections and could open the door for similar action in other forests.

As TW laments, “I miss the REAL Republicans!”

Reagan won by 10 points, and garnered 489 electoral votes to Carter’s 49. Repeat that: ten points in just one week. John McCain has three weeks. And he has an opponent who has shown a bizarre and extremely disturbing pattern of consorting with radicals and crooks. Yes, a pattern — a pattern of bad judgment, of associating with bad characters, of playing the bad old political games, of voting for the most leftist legislation, and a pattern of saying things that show disdain for Americans who don’t breathe his rarified leftist air. A little off the subject today but we seem to be wandering. Interesting site http://www.obamacrimes.com/ describes a lawsuit listing Phillip J. Berg as challenging Obama’s citizenship. He states that Obama and the DNC has refused to hand over any records of his Punahou HS (Hawaii), Columbia University and Harvard Law School records, including his health records. Mr Berg wants only to see a true and valid copy of his birth certificate and to review the actual hospital delivery records to certify that he was actually born in Hawaii ( his sister first said that he was born at Kapiolani Hospital then said he was born at Queens Med Ctr, two different hosptials). Also Mr. Berg takes issue with the fact that when his mother moved him to Indonesia and her new husband adopted him, Obama became an Indonesian citizen by law, adopted his new father’s name and applied for and was given an Indonesian passport. Indonesia does not allow dual citizenship and Mr. Berg cites laws that would have invalidated Obama’s citizenship, even if he was or was not born in Hawaii, which is yet to be determined. The judge hearing the case has put a stay on the proceedings….. liberal judge appointed by Clinton.

AJC and Dusty, you may enjoy this article.

Manitoba, Canada, Oct. 15 — A flood of American liberals sneaking across the border into Canada has intensified in the past week, sparking calls for increased patrols to stop the illegal immigration. The possibility of a McCain/Palin election is prompting the exodus among left-leaning citizens who fear they’ll soon be required to hunt, pray, and agree with Bill O’Reilly. Canadian border farmers say it’s not uncommon to see dozens of sociology professors, animal rights activists and Unitarians crossing their fields at night. “I went out to milk the cows the other day, and there was a Hollywood producer huddled in the barn,” said Manitoba farmer Red Greenfield, whose acreage borders North Dakota. The producer was cold, exhausted and hungry. “He asked me if I could spare a latte and some free-range chicken. Officials are particularly concerned about smugglers who meet liberals near the Canadian border, pack them into Volvo station wagons, drive them across the border and leave them to fend for themselves. “A lot of these people are not prepared for rugged conditions,” an Ontario border patrolman said. “I found one carload without a drop of drinking water. They did have a nice little Napa Valley cabernet, though.” When liberals are caught, they’re sent back across the border, often wailing loudly that they fear retribution from conservatives. Rumors have been circulating about the McCain administration establishing re-education camps in which liberals will be forced to shoot wolves from airplanes, deny evolution, and act out drills preparing them for the Rapture. In recent days, liberals have turned to sometimes-ingenious ways of crossing the border. Some have taken to posing as senior citizens on bus trips to buy cheap Canadian prescription drugs. After catching a half-dozen young vegans disguised in powdered wigs, Canadian immigration authorities began stopping buses and quizzing the supposed senior-citizen passengers. “If they can’t identify the accordion player on The Lawrence Welk Show, we get suspicious about their age,” an official said. Canadian citizens have complained that the illegal immigrants are creating an organic-broccoli shortage and renting all the good Susan Sarandon movies. “I feel sorry for American liberals, but the Canadian economy just can’t support the m,” an Ottawa resident said. “How many art-history and English majors does one country need?

To be effective with the undecideds, Sen McCain needs to move past the associations and concentrate on what it says about Sen Obama’s leadership, judgment and likely conduct as President. Sen McCain should say things such as:

“Senator Obama trained ACORN workers. They’re now under investigation for fraud. Senator Obama worked as a lawyer representing ACORN . Acorn offices have been raided by various state’s Attorneys General. We’ve seen America’s families exploited by greedy Wall Street executives with no oversight from the government, oversight I repeatedly called for. Senator Obama gave ACORN nearly one million dollars with no strings attached, no oversight. How can we trust him with the billions of dollars he’s going to take from your pockets in new taxes? This is not the kind of ‘spend and look away’ philosophy America needs. ”

Sen Obama? I don’t see him as doing much different for the undecideds. As your Reagan-Carter example illustrated, faith in polls leading to the same campaign style may not be the best strategy.

What’s that mental problem called that Bud Non-Wiser has? I mean, other than being a drunkard — oh yeah, it’s called “projection”… or maybe it’s just “obsession” with what he sees in his own mirror every morning.

Non-Wiser, you really need to see your shrink today.

Bosch read the article from the link. My comments on it? WOW! Brief synopsis below============

“While I regret this development, I am not in mourning, for I no longer have any clear idea what, exactly, the modern conservative movement stands for,” Buckley wrote.

“Eight years of ‘conservative’ government has brought us a doubled national debt, ruinous expansion of entitlement programs, bridges to nowhere, poster boy Jack Abramoff and an ill-premised, ill-waged war conducted by politicians of breathtaking arrogance. As a sideshow, it brought us a truly obscene attempt at federal intervention in the Terry Schiavo case,” he also wrote.

The resignation comes four days after Buckley formally endorsed Obama on the Web site The Daily Beast, writing the presidential campaign had made John McCain “inauthentic,” and Obama appeared to have a “first-class temperament and first-class intellect.”

Debbie, explain the polling that shows it to be true.

By GaNative October 15, 2008 9:42 AM | Link to this Who cares if all the blacks or a majority of the blacks are voting for Obama because he is black. They’ve voted 100% for whites in the past presidential elections.

Wow, now that is really some intelligent form of reasoning, intelligent on the cockroach scale of smartness, that is.

It appears that by that statement that you then are accepting my prior statement I was trying to avoid saying, that blacks are voting color, period.

Guess what that makes you?

Racist.

Who cares if they don’t look at the man, just his color?

Racists, they care.

Who cares if they don’t know one shred of a thing about his moral character?

Idiots, if they know what that really means.

Racists.

Who cares if they don’t care if he is a socialist, or associates with terrorists, or racist preachers, or convicted felons?

Racists?

Who cares?

Obviously you don’t care.

Again, guess what?

Racist.

And they don’t care.

Nobody cares.

But me.

And I’m always here to remind you that indeed, it is the Democrats that are the true racists, taking the black vote for granted, having already locked them in with the false premise of hope and change, a promise that is always there, but never fulfilled.

Racists.

RB @ 9:48 — I do believe your guy McSame is proposing “socialist” policies now for gov’t bailing out our banking system… seems like McSame is at least smart enough to know not to repeat the devastating mistakes of Herbert Hoover. Apparently “socialism” is bad except when it isn’t… but you go ahead and vote for BOB BARR, RB — do it, do it!!!

And, if you’re still in the dark about the charges against Diebold and other voting machine frauds that occurred in 2002 and 2004, I can’t help you any further with your ignorance. Apparently you’re beyond educating outside of your very narrow view of the world.

Debbie,

Just ignore turd-blossom Bud. He’s a troll.

“An ::Internet troll**, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who posts controversial and irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the intention of provoking other users into an emotional response or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion.”

Paul: Your recommendation is measured, but flawed and opens McCain up to the following attacks on his judgement:

  • McCain was ACORN’s 2006 keynote speaker and showed them the love then.

  • McCain’s presidential transition chief was one of Saddam’s lobbyists in the ‘90’s. Can’t get more damning that that association.

  • McCain has been consistently for further deregulating the banking industry — and has a recent quote on doing the same thing for health care — and his campaign has tight lobbying ties to Freddie and Fannie.

In the end, I think the topic is a wash with no winner/no loser.

It’s still going to come back to the economy and who can lay out the best plan to help the muddy middle.

Goldie, I’ll assume your lack of proof for your claim of election fraud by Diebold is an admission of having made false claims against them. You made the claim, the burden of proof lies with you. And, no, I don’t take you at your word there was something going on 6 years ago. You haven’t earned that kind of trust from anyone who reads your crap.

Dennis: sounds like you’re more interested in your own opinion than in facts. Go find the ANY facts about this column and prove Jay wrong on the topic.

Or just continue to “bloviate” as Bill O likes to say. Your call.

I’m fine with whatever facts you find as long as you can back them up.

But you won’t even try. Pathetic.

So, RB— are you planning to vote for Bob Barr in November?

Because as far as I can tell, Barr’s the only candidate who hasn’t succumbed to the “socialist” disease of assisting American banks through our bankruptcy crisis caused by the Repug Party’s policies… I mean, you’ve already posted that you’ll never vote for any “socialism” no matter the skin color, so I’m sure you’ll agree that John McSame is out of the question for you now.

Do it, RB — vote for Bob Barr! It’s your duty!

Oh, unless you’re considering Ralph Nader instead, the other non-“socialist”? Which is it, RB???

This came out a little too late for me Jay, Now I can not remember who I voted for, but if “Bubba” came up on the ballot I probably did not go with him.

Was a woman on the ticket? I was kind of disposed to vote our incumbents this time as I live in Gwinnett, “screw the homeowners for a stadium” County.

When incumbents were not opposed, I left it blank. Just my own little protest.

BudWizzer(D!ickhe#ad): Pulled from your link:

From July 8 -13, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,725 likely voters nationwide, with a margin of error of +/- 2.4 percentage points.

1,725 people polled, of how many of those 1,725 were black? No one knows it’s not showing up in the data; however my point is if you poll 10 black people for this survey and 9 of them support Obama, statistically YES you have 95% — however that’s NOT the entire black populace. Just a glimpse of the trend of the people that you’ve polled.

You know, is it me, or shouldn’t you already know this? This is like, what, 5th grade math? Aren’t you smarter than a 5th grader? Obviously not.

Oh and about that pig comment, you really shouldn’t talk about your VP candidate like that. It’s not nice, and I don’t think she looks that bad — especially when you put some lipstick on her…..

I wish Speir was running for re-election. She’s the only PSC member in my living memory who wasn’t in the pocket of the utilities and/or using it as a stepping stone to higher office. I don’t know much about Mr. Powell but he isn’t Bubba McDonald so that’s good enough to get my vote. I notice he calls himself Lauren now instead of Bubba. Maybe he thinks us native Georgians won’t remember him.

A brief aside: There is nothing wrong with being called Bubba. My sister calls me Bubba. It’s short for brother. It usually starts with a young sibling who can’t say brother.

And a tip of the hat to Jay for this column. This will affect our pocketbooks as much or more than any of the other races.

McDonald “in the pocket” of GA Power? This supports the idea that corporations are not evil, the politicians are.

Profit motivation is not a vice. Selling one’s integrity in order to remain in office is. Capitalism is the fairest wealth distribution system on the planet until the politicians get involved in it.
