Dow booms, at least for today

I’ve had CNBC on mute all day long, and I didn’t have to check the ticker to see how the market was doing. Those folks were actually smiling!

I hadn’t seen smiles on CNBC since Hector was a pup, as my Dad would say. Dow closes up more than 930 points!! Now the test will be to see how much of that gain we keep tomorrow.

Mahoney paid a previously undisclosed $121,000 settlement to a former staffer, who was also his mistress, in order to stop her suing him for sexual harassment. ABC reports that senior Democratic lawmakers, including Rep. Rahm Emanuel of Illinois, were aware of Mahoney’s personal troubles and were working to keep the matter quiet before Election Day, Mahoney staffers said.

“You’re fired,” Mahoney screams at her. “Do you hear me? Don’t tell me whether it’s correct or not.” Allen says, “Tell me why else I’m fired.” “There is no why else,” Mahoney responds.-ABC News

I’ve been out of pocket since Thursday, but turned on the Sunday shows and nearly hurled. John Lewis plays the race card like no one else. The idea that he would use George Wallace’s name to describe the McCain/Palin campaigning is sickening. John Lewis is not to be criticized given the abuse against him during the civil-right marches, but John McCain can be compared to Wallace despite his heroic service to this country and torture as a POW.

Barack Obama’s campaign has managed to paint Geraldine Ferraro, Bill Clinton, John McCain, and Sarah Palin as racists. Meanwhile, how dare anyone suggest that Obama’s voluntary association with a racist pastor for 20 years, and his lame defense of the association, raises character questions.-Mark Levin, NRO

I know that nobody’s been following what’s goin’ on in the ME. For the leftists, it’s no longer advantageous to follow the successes of our military. They’ve always been more invested in the failures. Anyhoo……

Israeli Prime Minister-designate Tzipi Livni succeeded in sealing a deal Oct. 12 for Ehud Barak’s Labor party to join the centrist Kadima coalition. The deal came through only after Barak got assurances in writing that he would be able to exercise greater authority over security matters.

Stratfor expects Livni to cobble together a coalition within her 42-day time limit. The sooner Israel pulls itself out of its domestic political turmoil, the sooner Israeli-Syrian peace negotiations can resume. As part of these negotiations, the Syrians are already making preparations to reassert their power over Lebanon and curtail Hezbollah’s military arm. Damascus will be more inclined to make concessions on the negotiating front once it can be assured that Israel will be able to avoid a government collapse.

At the same time, Israel is now closer to freeing up more bandwidth to keep the pressure on Moscow to refrain from meddling seriously in the Middle East, especially when it comes to providing countries such as Iran and Syria with advanced weapons system. So far, it appears that Israel’s negotiations with Russia have been successful. But the sooner Israel can politically get back on its feet, the better capable it will be in dealing with the Russians and the Syrians.

It doesn’t apear as though McCain or OBlahMa will have their war in Afghanistan. Seems the tribal leaders are turning against the militant Taliban AND Al Qaeda.

Pakistan has been put on the financial ropes. Only $3 billion in their reserves. Had to go beggin to Saudi Arabia and Iran. Iran’s got nothing to offer due to internal budget problems.

What Riyadh needs most at the moment is for its current mediation efforts with the Taliban in Afghanistan to produce results on the ground. Riyadh has long been pursuing a policy behind the scenes to co-opt certain elements of the Taliban with an aim of dividing and conquering the jihadist insurgency in Afghanistan. This is a policy that recently has been endorsed publicly by the United States, as incoming U.S. Central Command chief Gen. David Petraeus and U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates are in the process of implementing a strategy — one that is in many ways similar to the counterinsurgency strategy devised in Iraq — to defeat al Qaeda and Taliban forces in this theater of operations. For any divide-and-conquer plan to work, however, Saudi Arabia and the United States must have Pakistan’s full cooperation. And that means having Islamabad provide key intelligence, turn against uncooperative jihadists and purge the country’s intelligence apparatus of jihadist sympathizers.

Faced with economic collapse, a raging insurgency and escalating U.S. pressure on the Pakistani-Afghan border, the Pakistanis have a great deal of incentive to cooperate with Riyadh and Washington in knocking the legs out from under the jihadist insurgency. The Saudis will do their part to ensure that any oil bailout produces results in improving Pakistan’s jihadist management skills.

Hope jay doesn’t scrub this one like he did my last Stratfor excerpts.

Black Reporter Removed From Covering McCain

News & Notes , August 6, 2008 · A newspaper reporter recently became the subject of news when he was thrown out of the press area during a rally for Sen. John McCain.

Stephen Price of the Tallahassee Democrat was one of several reporters covering McCain’s stop-over in Panama City, Florida last Friday.

But Price was the only African-American reporter in the press corps that day when McCain’s security team singled him out and asked him to leave.

A Panama City police office quickly approached with his hand on his holster and asked what the problem was, Price said. At the same time Palm Beach Post reporter Dara Kam came to Price’s defense and was told she also had to leave, Price said.

The other two reporters, Alex Leary of the St. Petersburg Times and Marc Caputo of The Miami Herald, weren’t removed.

Caputo, however, said that initially he also was told he had to leave the area.

“Security was tight and was a bit over-controlling, which is par for the course at these events. And, as par for the course, I tried to get near the candidate when I saw another reporter there (Alex Leary). Security tried to throw me out, but I found a McCain staffer I knew and the person vouched for me,” Caputo said in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

The McCain campaign said it asked Secret Service to look into the events.

“The campaign looked into this, and found that no one from the campaign was involved,” said McCain spokesman Brian Rogers.

Then there’s Lake County, Indiana, which has already found more than 2,100 bogus applications among the 5,000 Acorn dumped right before the deadline. “All the signatures looked exactly the same,” said Ruthann Hoagland, of the county election board. Bridgeport, Connecticut estimates about 20% of Acorn’s registrations were faulty. As of July, the city of Houston had rejected or put on hold about 40% of the 27,000 registration cards submitted by Acorn.

Which brings us to Mr. Obama, who got his start as a Chicago “community organizer” at Acorn’s side. In 1992 he led voter registration efforts as the director of Project Vote, which included Acorn. This past November, he lauded Acorn’s leaders for being “smack dab in the middle” of that effort. Mr. Obama also served as a lawyer for Acorn in 1995, in a case against Illinois to increase access to the polls.

During his tenure on the board of Chicago’s Woods Fund, that body funneled more than $200,000 to Acorn. More recently, the Obama campaign paid $832,000 to an Acorn affiliate. The campaign initially told the Federal Election Commission this money was for “staging, sound, lighting.” It later admitted the cash was to get out the vote.-Wall Street Journal

The GOP strategy since McKinley and Mark Hanna has been to discourage and make it difficult for poor people to vote. Until the 1960s, the Southern Democrats’ strategy was to keep black people from voting. In the 1960s, the southern Dems became Repukes, so now the GOP national strategy is to keep blacks and poor people from voting by any means necessary.

You rightwingnuts will be shocked to find this out, but poor people, black people, people with funny sounding names, non-Christians, even homeless people have the right to vote, as long as they are citizens of the United States.

AJC/DNC and Bud: There are also lots of dead Republicans on the voter roles. Just ask any SecState about that. The biggest issues with fraud come from absentee ballots, not voting in person, but you think the Republicans want to do anything about that? Why not? Oh, right, because it’s mostly military people voting this way, and they used to vote Republican in large quantities. When that changes — and Iraq may be the tipping point for that — you think Republicans won’t get right on that case?

I find all this talk of ACORN and registration fraud and felons to be a distraction from the real point of all this:

Republicans are going to lose HUGELY this year. As well they should. No amount of claims of voter fraud will change that.

Just take your lumps, stop whining about it, and plan for the future.

My recommendation would be to work within the party to come up with core principles that recapture the middle. The Republicans did it once before, they can do it again. And they need to, since they’ve already shown that a one-party system is the surest way to an abused system.

Bud: I’m actually OK with making sure felons get back within the system as quickly as possible. All available studies have shown that you lower recidivism rates by encouraging those who have served their time to rejoin society as functional members. Voting is one part of that; losing the right to vote just means they don’t have a stake in our society, which translates into more crime.

Giving felons who have served their time the right to vote is an anti-crime position.

WHERE DID OBAMA’S MONEY COME FROM???????

Subject: New York Times Editorial By MAUREEN DOWD Published: June 29, 2008 Go to Columnist Page

Certainly the most interesting and potentially devastating.

OBAMA’S TROUBLING INTERNET FUND RAISING.

Certainly the most interesting and potentially devastating phone call I have received during this election cycle came this week from one of the Obama’s campaign internet geeks. These are the staffers who devised Obama’s internet fund raising campaign which raised in the neighborhood of $200 million so far. That is more then twice the total funds raised by any candidate in history and this was all from the internet campaign.

What I learned from this insider was shocking but I guess we shouldn’t be surprised that when it comes to fund raising there simply are no rules that can’t be broken and no ethics that prevail.

Obama’s internet campaign started out innocently enough with basic e-mail networking , lists saved from previous party campaigns and from supporters who visited any of the Obama campaign web sites.

Small contributions came in from these sources and the internet campaign staff were more than pleased by the results.

Then, about two months into the campaign the daily contribution intake multiplied. Where was it coming from? One of the web site security monitors began to notice the bulk of the contributions were clearly coming in from overseas internet service providers and at the rate and frequency of transmission it was clear these donations were programmed by a very sophisticated user.

While the security people were not able to track most of the sources due to firewalls and other blocking devices put on these contributions they were able to collate the number of contributions that were coming in seemingly from individuals but the funds were from only a few credit card accounts and bank electronic funds transfers. The internet service providers (ISP) they were able to trace were from Saudi Arabia , Iran , and other Middle Eastern countries. One of the banks used for fund transfers was also located in Saudi Arabia

Another concentrated group of donations was traced to a Chinese ISP with a similar pattern of limited credit card charges.

It became clear that these donations were very likely coming from sources other than American voters. This was discussed at length within the campaign and the decision was made that none of these donations violated campaign financing laws.

It was also decided that it was not the responsibility of the campaign to audit these millions of contributions as to the actual source (specific credit card number or bank transfer account numbers) to insure that none of these internet contributors exceeded the legal maximum donation on a cumulative basis of many small donations. They also found the record keeping was not complete enough to do it anyway.

This is a shocking revelation.

We have been concerned about the legality of bundling contributions after the recent exposure of illegal bundlers but now it appears we may have an even greater problem.

I guess we should have been somewhat suspicious when the numbers started to come out. We were told (no proof offered) that the Obama internet contributions were from $10.00 to $25.00 or so.

If the $200,000,000 is right, and the average contribution was $15.00, that would mean over 13 million individuals made contributions? That would also be 13 million contributions would need to be processed. How did all that happen?

I believe the Obama campaign’s internet fund raising needs a serious, in depth investigation and audit. It also appears the whole question of internet fund raising needs investigation by the legislature and perhaps new laws to insure it complies not only with the letter of these laws but the spirit as well.

IS IT RIGHT FOR FOREIGN COUNTRIES TO HAVE AN INVESTMENT IN WHO BECOMES OUR NEXT PRESIDENT??? IF YOU ARE IN AGREEMENT WITH THIS, PLEASE PASS IT ON.

The fact that the NY Times allowed this to be printed is amazing in itself.

I’m sure the rebound of the market is all God’s …err..I mean Obama’s plan. I always get the two confused. If Obama wins I can’t wait to see the look on the face of folks who thought that one was their answer. A year after Jimmy Carter II takes office his followers will still have a 350 credit rating; ACORN will still continue to bankrupt Amercia but this time whith their best friend and supporter (Obama) at the helm and democrats will find out that Socialism doesn’t improve brain power….they’ll still be dumber than a bag of rocks.
