Slouching toward Bethlehem
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
According to the Washington Post’s Dana Milbanks, a minister at a McCain rally in Bethlehem, Pa. offered this opening prayer:
“O God, we are in a battle that is raging for the soul of this nation. You, O God, have raised up Senator John McCain and Governor Sarah Palin for such a time as this … Help them, O God, to strengthen our economy, to keep our taxes and spending low … and grant them the privilege of being elected the next president and vice president.”
That’s a far cry from the wisdom of a previous Republican leader, Abraham Lincoln, who was perhaps the greatest American of us all. In his humility, Lincoln said he would not presume to know which side God had taken.
“My concern is not whether God is on our side,” he said. “My greatest concern is to be on God’s side, for God is always right.”
We should all strive to be on the side of right, “as God gives us to see the right,” as Lincoln put it. But claiming God has raised up one side in a political race implies the opposite about the other side.
And claiming He cares about lower taxes? Well…

Hey Jay
Here’s the first prayer ever prayed in the Continental Congress. Was it o.k. to pray for victory over the British ?
First Prayer in Congress “September 7, 1774 O! Lord, our heavenly father,(2) King of Kings and Lord of lords: who dost from thy throne behold all the dwellers upon earth and reignest with power supreme & uncontrouled(3) over all kingdoms, empires and governments, look down in mercy,(4) we beseech thee, upon these our(5) American states who have fled to thee from the rod of the oppressor and thrown themselves upon thy gracious protection, desiring henceforth to be(6) dependent only on thee. To thee they have appealed for the righteousness of their Cause; to Thee do they look up,(7) for that countenance & support which Thou alone canst give. Take them, therefore, Heavenly Father, under thy nurturing care: give them wisdom in council, valour in the field. Defeat the malicious designs of our cruel adversaries. Convince them of the unrighteousness of their cause. And if they persist(8) in their sanguinary purposes, O! let the voice of thy(9) unerring justice sounding in their hearts constrain them to drop the weapons of war from their enerved(10) hands in the day of battle. Be thou present, O God of Wisdom and direct the counsels(11) of this honourable Assembly. Enable them to settle things upon the best and surest foundation, that the scene of blood may be speedily closed; that(12) harmony and peace may effectually be restored, and truth and justice, religion and piety prevail and flourish amongst thy people. Preserve the health of their bodies and the vigour of their minds; shower down upon them and the millions they represent(13) such temporal blessings as Thou seest expedient for them in this world, and crown them with everlasting glory in the world to come. All this we ask in the name and through the merits of Jesus Christ thy son, Our Saviour, Amen.

I can’t believe the libs really want to bring up the subject of the candidates preachers.
It’s almost as though they are begging the McCain campaign to roll out the Greatest Hits of Jeremiah Wrong tape.
So what do you say, Repugs, shall we hook them up?

Jay, we are right on the outskirts of Bethlehem. The center did not hold — it got hijacked by gop religious zealots like the preacher you mention. That’s what makes this election so important.

He was praying to God for lower taxes. Geez. It doesn’t take an atheist to spot religious nuts. And it only takes suspending your own belief system to accept that this was always so and just and right.

You just had to reopen the door to Wright, didn’t you? And it was so nice, having him off in his multimillion dollar house in the gated white community with that nifty line of credit.
Even though Sen Obama has left the church and repudiated him.
Nice to see you and Sara Palin quoting from the same explanation and prayer of Abraham Lincoln. Change. Great stuff.

SLOUCHING TOWARD JERUSALEM

Personally, I think the Lord God Jehovah (O.T.) has a stake in who should be President. However, He does not force mankind as He gave us a free will. But He does allow us to reap the consequences of our actions.
Jeremiah 1:5
Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.
It’s not wise to end the life of an innocent baby that God has formed.

Sort of like military chaplains asking God to watch over their sons and daughters when going into battle. And this is just a race for the president, not a life and death race for survival. We pray for rain, ask God to watch over the sick and infirmed, pray for safe journeys and loved ones. Why not ask God to make McCain the winner? I have often said that only God can save this nation if Mr. Wonderful is elected. Why not ask for some intervention?

God want us to ask him for things. Before we pray He already knows what we are going to say and ask for, but he still wants us to ask. He wants us to have a relationship with Him. Why is it so cool these day to bash Christians?

Corporal: we’ve been through this time and again. That quote also implies that contraception in any form — including even abstaining from sex — is supposedly against God’s will. In fact, if God is all-powerful, then she already knows whether someone is going to get pregnant before they ever have sex. Which means that somehow you have to know God’s will before having sex. Or when not having sex. Or maybe abortions are also God’s will. You’re presumptuous to claim otherwise.

I’d have to say the difference is, the British were our enemy in a time of war.
In this situation, we’re all Americans.
I’d just as soon the prayers stuck to appeals for wisdom, mercy and conduct congruent with His teachings.
Hey Jay, as far as the lower tax thing, aside from a couple of specific examples of “sell all you have” the ‘tax’ parallel is a ‘tithe’ - a tenth.
God wants a tenth. Congress wants it all. Cool.

When St. Sarah decides to denounce her preacher-you know, the one who denounced Israel and said the Jews deserved the violence they were victims of for not receiving Jesus as their savior??????—then she can open her mouth.
Until she stops mid-sentence the shouts of, “kill him!” during the hate rallies that pass for Mc-P rallies, she must shut UP.
She’s condoning violence by NOT stopping it.
Obama at least had the common sense to man up and denounce his insane minister. St. Sarah, she who participated in a laying on of hands ceremony while a kenyan preacher “protected her from witchcraft,” and helped her have a successful gov. campaign….will she denounce that particularly embarrassing piece of history from her past?
Nope. David Brooks was right- she IS a fatal cancer..but not just to the republican party—she is a fatal cancer to all of America.
A stupid, DANGEROUS woman.

God is on no man’s side. In fact man is but a filthy rag in God’s presence, unworthy of anything because of his own ignorant selfishness.
However, Jesus is on man’s side. In fact he would love to stand before God in your place, if only you would let him. All it takes is faith…

Here’s what Jesus said once about some of His fellow citizens:
Matthew 23
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are”.
Bottom line: Wrong is wrong and evil is evil whether it’s another country we’re at war with or other citizens who (even in ignorance) would endanger this county.

Most Merciful Jay, we beseech thee, in thy great wisdom and mercy, grant us no more religious-themed threads. May thy threads bestow upon us thoughtfulness of political considerations. Grant that we will live and let live, basking in light and knowledge as we seek to persuade others of the truth we know only we possess. May the unwashed, ignorant masses be converted to the truth we offer, that we may go forward, without dissension, in perfect harmony and lockstep.
Amen.

I’m trying remember the scripture verse where it says “and God said let your taxes be low and Government small”…wait, that’s right…here is no such verse! That pastor must be leader in the Church of Supply Side Economics where they worship the free market instead of Yahweh. Their holy trinity are Markets (The Father), Big Business (The Son) and Tax Cuts (The Holy Spirit). My God have mercy on his soul.

O God, I humbly pray for the lost sheep among us who wrongfully believe that the the Republicans are in favor of responsible government spending, for they are truly out of their minds and deserve your pity. May you open their eyes to the wanton destruction happening all around them in the markets and thereby show them that four more years of neo-con trickle-down borrow-and-spend financial thuggery will only compound and prolong our nation’s woes. Further, may you deliver all of us from the demons currently in power whose selfishness is so great that they see nothing wrong with stealing trillions of dollars from future generaltions of Americans to pay for their selfish desires today. Finally, may you bless all your children with the virtuous notion that “pay as you go” is the only right, just and honorable way of funding government, not to mention a smart way to live life in general. Amen.

Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

It sounds like to me that minister could use some education.
I’m a Christian who is a Democrat. I get tired of so many people believing that can’t be possible. Republicans do not hold the monopoly on Christianity.
I know other Christians who are Democrats. I know non-Christians who are Democrats. I know Christians who are Republicans. I know non-Christians who are Republicans.
