Allow me a non-political vent
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Last night I dumped the new bag of dry dog food into our plastic storage bin, just as I’ve done countless times before. Every other time, the bag has filled the bin to overflowing.
This time, it came a few inches short. I’d been ripped off again.
I hate these companies who pump up their bottom line by cheating their customers. The eight-oz yogurt that suddenly becomes six ounces. The 16-oz can that quietly becomes 14.5 oz. A half-gallon of ice cream that isn’t actually a half-gallon.
And the large bag of dog food that isn’t so large anymore.
The market is supposed to penalize such behavior, but I don’t think it works well in that regard. Nonetheless, I’d like to offer congratulations and encouragement to Blue Bell ice cream for its TV ad campaign pointing out that a half gallon of Blue Bell is actually a full half-gallon.
It’s good ice cream too. Go buy some. Fight the power.

You missed how a pound of coffee is now 12 ounces.
The dog food was probably a OSHA mandate that the weight be reduced to prevent injury…

Jay B.,
Did the bag of dog food still claim to hold the same amount? If so you’ve got an actionable claim and if not you weren’t cheated.

Man. the last thing on Earth I need to see just before going to the store is a picture of the best ice cream ever made and sold in America.
How am I supposed to stay on a diet, for when I go to the grocery I shall now be drawn to the frozen foods section immediately?
Thanks Jay. Just tell me how I’m going to explain to the wife when she gets home the 3 gallons of Blue Bell in the freezer…French Vanilla, Chocolate (just plain, not Dutch or whatever), and my favorite - PEACH.

As the comparative value of a dollar decreases, the usual result is (a) the cash price rises for the same amount of a product or (b) you get less product for the same cash.
“The market” is working exactly as it should whether we, as consumers, like it or not.

Thanks for the tip - most peach I’ve tried has been insipid. I will try theirs. Another good use: Blue Bell coffee ice cream in place of vanilla or chocolate when making a chocolate shake. Mmmmmm. And as far as explaining to your wife: blame it on Jay. He’s a good sport.

It really is the best ice cream in the country. Just tried their new flavors … Snickerdoodle and Candy Jar … they are both incredible. But nothing beats their Homemade Vanilla — it’s still the ruler that all other ice cream is measured against!

Why don’t you look at it on the up side, Portion Control, which most American’s have a little room to do better at.
Or, when they removed all the melamine from your dog’s food it takes up less space?
I try to buy only that tiny container, maybe 2-3 oz at best, of Hagen Das, Dulche Leche. Like I said above, it is about portion control.

I’m marketing a new product here in the Southeast. It’s real popular in times of drought — dehydrated water. It’s very light weight and compact.

A reminder for my fellow Bookman readers.
You can do yourselves (and the rest of us) a huge favor if you get in the habit of looking at the price per unit of each product you buy at the grocery (displayed on the price stickers attached to the shelves) It takes a few extra secs, but we really can compare apples-to-apples for all products we buy, and if you try it for the first time, you’ll be surprised at how big the price differences are.
Going with lower priced products does us all a favor because that forces the competition to lower their prices in order to compete.
And yes, Blue Bell Ice Cream is, indeed, quite delicious.

Some people just don’t know how to get off of their one plank platform and realize that there’s more to life than politics.
That being said…I got royally ticked off when the “longneck” bottles went to 11.6 oz. instead of 12 for the same. And no, it wasn’t labeled that way on the 6 pack carton nor the shelf sticker, just the bottle. To add insult to injury, the bottles don’t fit right in my huggie anymore! :(

In my opinion by advertising ICE CREAM as HOT CHOCOLATE Blue Bell is ripping off the consumer.
They are promising something hot and serving something cold.
It might be that the cold something they’re promising as hot is STILL a half gallon but that’s just a smoke screen for the REAL scam….

Jay, from your blind support of Obama I have learned that you are a little weak in the fact check area and prone to making irresponsible and innacurate claims. Did you check to see that the actual weight in the bag wnet down, because contents can settle at different rates in different bags. Finally, was the dog food manufacturer named Bush, because, if so, I can tell you that you won’t be happy about anything.

We can’t afford Blue Bell, even if it’s on sale. But Ingles’ lowfat frozen yogurt, sherbert and ice cream are good substitutes.

For some reason the pic of that ice cream sent me back to the time I was a small boy. Daddy used to make us homemade ice cream. Never had any vanilla since that tasted as good. And it seemed like it took hours from the time he started until it was ready. I think kids today are poorer for not experiencing the simple things like that.
As for the downsizing, remember how big a nickel candy bar used to be?

That full pound bag of chips? now 13 ounces. That 16 oz, pint of beer? now 14 ounces That 64 ounce half gallon of ice cream? Now 58 ounces (with a few exceptions!) That pound of peanuts? now 14.5 ounces That 3.2 ounce candybar? now 2.88 ounces That 6 pack of energy bars? now 5 pack That 40 pound bucket of kitty litter? now 38 pounds And yes, they are charging the same price, or more for these smaller weights (but in the same size package!)

There’s a simple explanation for the differences in weights, volumes, etc. Products are now measured in “reverse dog units” (RDU), the basis for calculating “dog years.”
For example, a ten-pound bag of ice actually weighs 1.4 pounds. A twenty-pound bag of dog food now weighs 2.85 pounds. The “Magnificent Seven” are now only Yul Brynner.

Hi Midori!
Just doing a bit of work, listening to Enya. I kinda thought the ice cream was a comfort food, the beer would finish off the chilling out. But I do see your point. Barf-o-rama.
I picked up an entirely different mood than in the earlier post. The weakness of blogging, I suppose. So I gather from your postings that the topic was just a means to zing the other person. Interesting.
Get ready, Midori. Sen Obama’s likely got this sewn up. People are impatient, though, and as much as some will give him to the end of his first term, many will not be so patient.
So in your upcoming battles, just remember, the best defense is a good offense!

Paul,
all the damage that has been done to this country will need time to be corrected.
Just a fact. Not an excuse, nor is it a “preemptive” move to defend Obama’s performance.
After all, Bush had 8 whole years to screw up the country. Let’s give Obama at least 4 to reverse some of the screwups.
Besides, this thing ain’t over yet. I don’t believe in counting my chickens before they hatch.
As for Bud, he accused me of calling him a racist the other night. Funny thing is, until then, I normally scrolled past his posts, as I find them rather distasteful. So when the opportunity presents itself, I grab it.
Tonight I’m cooking turkey wings and gravy with rice and black beans. Yum. :)

I must’ve missed the first salvo. I was really struck by the vehemence of your post - so I trust you took my post in the manner I intended.
You know, it takes a lot longer to build a house than it does to tear it down. We’ve had a lot of tear-downs. As we see from this financial disaster, both sides are complicit. But in many other areas, one can lay the responsibility squarely at the feet of the Administration. Regardless, people will expect action, quickly. And not, on the Congressional side, the freeze-outs of the DeLays and Pelosis.
We are generally not a very patient people and haven’t done well with delayed gratification. When you said how long it would take, I have to say I thought “yeah, @!#!, it’s my grandkids who’re still going to be feeling the ill effects of what we’ve done.” Sad.
Sounds like a good meal! I like turkey parts - often more flavor than other birdies - generally go for the thighs - but like the wings and neck for turkey noodle soup. Getting the time of year to start that up again.
Pleasant evening, all -
