The Palin-palooza debate thread…
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
in which Joe Biden will play a supporting role no matter what he does … almost.
UPDATE: The bailout question and the economy, and McCain’s claim that the fundamentals were strong. The McCain explanation — that he meant the American worker was strong — was a weak argument, and it’s not Palin’s fault she had to repeat it.
UPDATE II: Biden scores on deregulation, and Palin goes off the track, says she’s not going to answer the questions that are asked, she’s going to say what she wants. Interesting tactic.
UPDATE III: I think Biden’s winning on content, and Palin is reciting well. But if she can continue to do that, she’ll escape unscathed.
UPDATE IV: So an evangelical conservative Republican supports equal benefits for same-sex couples? Great. But then maybe not, she ducks the question when asked to clarify.
UPDATE V: Iraq. I don’t think this is a good issue for the Republicans, and Palin isn’t their best spokesman for it. She says victory is within sight, so she must have very good eyesight.
UPDATE VI: Biden hits the Pakistan/Iran question out of the park. His experience shows. Palin accuses Obama of naivete. That’s rich. Biden really showing his stuff on the foreign policy issues. The story of the night may not be Palin failing but Biden succeeding.
UPDATE VII: I’m sorry — there is no comparison between these two. One is ready to step into the Oval Office today if necessary. The other ain’t even close. And the American people are more than smart enough to figure that out.
UPDATE VIII: Biden on raising a family as a single parent — very real, and trumps Palin in the process. He is handling the whole thing perfectly. Very impressive.
Conclusion: Biden’s night. Maybe the American people will disagree, but I very much doubt it. And it was Biden’s night because of how well HE did, not because of how poorly Palin did. She did OK, under the circumstances. But there was simply no comparison between the two.

Jay B,
I think the story of abject failure you’ve written to post at 10:31 might need some tweaking. Sarah’Cuda without the selective edits is a wee bit different than the caricature ABC, CBS, and oddly NBC even without an interview have given us.

Unlike the blind eyed dems on this board, I call it like I see it. I watched 15 minutes and Palin was awful. Biden is doing a great job. It actually reminds me of McCain vs. Obama in reverse. One side is poised, articulate and has a wealth of experience in this arena. The other is nervous, scripted, and inexperienced. All I can say is out of the 4 candidates I’d rate them 1. McCain 2. Biden 3. Obama 4. Palin. Just my honest opinion. I actually like Biden. He’s doing a good job of changing my opinion of him tonight, but not enough to vote for the inexperienced Obama.

Of the four candidates, here is the order of who is most qualified to be President of the United States.
Note: Qualified doesn’t mean they should be based on policy positions.
1) John McCain 2) Joe Biden 3) Barack Obama/Sarah Palin (tied)

Jay,
If Americans were smart enough to figure anything out, none of these four clowns would be in the race.
Just think about how dumb the average American is, then remember that half of the Americans are dumber than that.
Presidential elections are popularity contests - and your man BO is certainly the celebrity du-jour. Congratulations. When he takes office and institutes massive spending programs - estimated at over $2 trillion in new Federal spending, and massive taxes to pay for them, everything will be alright.
And when Iran gets The Bomb, BO will go sit down and reason with them. We all know that Islamofacists respect community organizers.
And since glitter and glitz, BS and pandering, is what gets every politician elected in these days of immense American Idol popularity while PBS struggles, you can be proud of “The Chosen One”.

All of this is worthless, it’s just a publicity stunt. These polls don’t matter. people have already made up their minds as to who their going to vote for. Georgia will be a red state no matter what so it doesn’t matter what the AJC says. But on the same token Obama is going to win this election and it doesn’t matter what anyone else says. Mccain is simply too old and Palin is too young. Where is Mitt Romeny when you need him? or where is Colin Powell?

Practiced, practiced, practiced.
Everything Palin said that was memorized or on her notes, she said fairly well, but when she didn’t have a memorized answer, she stumbled and seemed at a loss.
Also, I didn’t hear her give one straight answer to any of the questions, just general rhetoric.
Good thing the bar was set so low for her.

Good debate - new kid on the block and old timer. Impressed by Palin’s composure as she is not Washington experienced. Palin hit it on the head —let’s learn from Congress’s past mistakes and look to the future. Loved the after debate friendliness of candidates and family. Biden outscored Obama’s appearance - again he is experienced. Biden didn’t debate Palin tonight as much as he kept “debating” Mc Cain. 60 something times he mentioned Mc Cain - Palin mentioned Obama 18 times.Palin reached out to the folks in middle class who will be voting. Concerning Palin’s remark regarding the “white flag” waving, Biden didn’t address it. Got to give Biden a nod concerning “bridge to nowhere” remark — we knew that was coming. Whether Palin wins the election or not, I think she is a diamond in the rough and we will see more of her in the future.Bottom line, folks. Mortgage companies, Wall Street, fat cat CEOs and Congress got us here. No matter who gets in, we need change.

For what passes as modern political debate and dialog in America, the Barracuda did well enough. Mr. Bookman:
Your liberal attitude and unabashed support of some cretin who has little experience in the Senate and no record of legislation worth mentioning is a disgrace to the AJC. Then again, Anne Cox’s support of the Democratic Party is well-known, so you have the freedom to spew your disgusting agenda.
Simply put, most American are fiscally conservative and socially liberal. The party you support, Jay, is fiscally and socially liberal. The Republican Party, destroyed by NeoConmen, is now fiscally liberal and socially conservative.
The bottom line is that our two-party system is not only out of touch with Americans but also rotten to the core.
How any intelligent person can support either of these parties is incredible to me. Then again, most people, including you Jay and excepting me, are only of average IQ (100). That’s why you supported Gore. That’s why others supported Bush. Both were men of average or below average intelligence.
The stupid electorate and the corrupt two-party system that has convinced them to be unwilling to support good, independent candidates (if there ever are any) will be the death of America.

Sarah Palin was GREAT!! She covered all the territory and did it with pzazz, smarts and all the good experience her governship has given her.
Biden looked tired. I was not surprised that he cried. He probably cried again when he got home. Palin outspoke him so evergetically while all he could remember was what Bush did. Sarah had to remind him twice that he was looking backwards.
I see all the libs here are making little jokes. That’s better than having them cry too. After all, they are trying to raise their morale after being faced with a smart, successful conservative, good looking woman who beat the socks off of Biden. (She is also PATRIOTIC, AmVet, and proud of it!)

Palin clearly held her own stylistically, but Biden was the one who has obvious mastery of the subjects that would be needed by someone in high office.
I am not surprised to see the comments I’ve read here. It was clear to me throughout that Palin’s performance would energize the Republican base, and the lack of a gaffe on Biden’s part indicated he wouldn’t drive anyone away. That bit at the end when he got choked up about his family will, I think, resonate with the “small town, undecided voter” every bit as much as the “Hockey Mom” BS, especially when combined with his own small-town roots and relatively modest wealth. The polls immediately after showed undecided voters thought Biden won by a margin of about 2 to 1.
I’m inclined to agree with them. No, I’m not undecided in the least — I’ll vote for Cynthia McKinney before I’ll vote for McCain — but my assessment of it has less to do with being partisan than with being a little bit of a policy wonk. Biden knows his stuff. Palin, not so much. Sure, she seemed knowledgeable, but there wasn’t much substance to her answers. (Few of which were to the actual questions asked of her.) Even when she had a potentially good line going, such as calling Biden out on repeatedly bringing up Bush/Cheney, she didn’t actually offer any specifics as to how their policies would be any different from Bush’s.
And the whole expansion of Vice Presidential powers? Scary after the VP we’ve had the past 8 years…
IMHO, if Palin won this debate it wasn’t that she beat Biden, but that she beat the Palin of the past couple of weeks. She exceeded expectations, stopping the campaign’s recent bleeding. But the bar was set incredibly low, and it’s just a temporary fix, a bandage on a deep wound. She may have stopped the campaign’s free fall, but another bad outing and the bandage gets ripped off, the bleeding starts up again, and McCain falls even farther.

Like I was saying, look at the Urinal “Fact Check,” they slam everything Hair Plugs said:
BIDEN: Complained about “economic policies of the last eight years” that led to “excessive deregulation.”
THE FACTS: Biden voted for 1999 deregulation that liberal groups are blaming for part of the financial crisis today.
But that didn’t stop them from trying to twist the words of Sarah:
PALIN: “Two years ago, remember, it was John McCain who pushed so hard with the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac reform measures. He sounded that warning bell.”
THE FACTS: Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska led an effort in 2005 to tighten regulation on the mortgage underwriters —- McCain joined as a co-sponsor a year later.

AJC/DNC…so there you are. When I saw no sign of you on Wootens blog, I was afraid you might have committed hari-kari in response to your Girl’s showing last night.
I’m relieved to see that you’ve not lost a step, have your blinders and biases strapped on tight, and continiue to provide amusement for the bloggers. I admire the way you never let reality rain on your little world.
Biden looked and appeared Presidential. Palin looked and appeared lost, trying desperately to spit out her talking points at the right time.
And why is it that everytime Palin opens her mouth, ya know, I have a “Fargo” deja-vu experience…it’s a heckava feeling darn it, ya know.
As far as the election, it’s pretty much over now. Game, set, match Obama/Biden.
I’m going to enjoy reading AJC/DNC and Dusty’s posts from here on out, as they twist and squirm while watching there party sink into the bog they’ve created.
Ya know? OK, then.

You may want to check this out, but you just made the same argument for Sarah that the libs made all last week for Oblahma’s debate performance.
And according to you, he “won.”
I tend to agree about the vice presidential backside, and was actively wishing Fox would quit showing that fine thing as it was ruining my concentration, but even more than that, did anyone else notice the industrial strength denture whitening that Hair Plugs has undergone, while he was standing there smiling like an idiot?
It reminds me of that Seinfeld episode.

Sarah carpet bombed that as-s:
No, in fact, when we talk about the Bush administration, there’s a time, too, when Americans are going to say, “Enough is enough with your ticket,” on constantly looking backwards, and pointing fingers, and doing the blame game.
It is because they do not have anything else to offer.
They are empty headed dimwit moonbat talking point regurgitating dullards, Monday morning quarterbacks, who on Sunday were handing the ball off to the Bush administration.
Biden voted for “Bushie’s war.”
Biden voted for “deregulation.”
It’s all they got, babbling about things in the past that can’t be “changed.”
Think about this for a minute; how many times has Lord High Dimwit changed his position so that it is exactly the same as Bush’s?
Surveillance?
Tax cuts?
The “bail out?”
More of the same, eh?

Hands down, Palin gets the sale. Both walk into my office and I’m buying what she’s selling.
Biden knows every detail about his products and should be in engineering but then drops 10 or more lies as he strains to sell. Palin gets me to trust her by speaking plainly and I know she’s got the right product for me.
Palin could be President. Biden looks like a used car salesman you’ll hate to talk with.

Tried my best to give her a chance, but can’t vote for anyone who smiled the whole time while giving their thoughts on Iran, Iraq, nukes and the economy. She attempted to talk tough, but smiled the whole time. She is simply not ready to lead this country - and the VP must be ready when elected, not at some point in the future.
And sad to see that her boss decided that he can’t win over the hockey moms in Michigan. If they can’t do it in Hockeytown USA with Palin on the ticket, where do they think the votes will come from? Conceding Michigan with its 17 electoral votes to concentrate on Maine with 4 doesn’t make much sense. But, then again, my degree was in chemistry, not math.

51 -36.
Not close, but not your what-has-become-typical neo-con a*******whipping either.
(CNN) — A national poll of people who watched the vice presidential debate Thursday night suggests that Democratic Sen. Joe Biden won, but also says Republican Gov. Sarah Palin exceeded expectations.
The CNN/Opinion Research Corp. said 51 percent of those polled thought Biden did the best job, while 36 percent thought Palin did the best job.
The candidates sparred over which team would be the better agent of change, and Biden came out on top of that debate, with 53 percent of those polled giving the nod to the Delaware senator while 42 percent said Palin was more likely to bring change.
Respondents overwhelmingly said moderator Gwen Ifill was fair during the vice presidential debate, repudiating critics who said that Ifill, of PBS, would be biased because she is writing a book that includes Biden’s running mate, Sen. Barack Obama.
Ninety-five percent of those polled said Ifill was fair.

I honestly am not overly impressed with either of the major party tickets. I would love to see the rise of a legitimate 3rd party, but until that happens I’ll vote for the candidates that at least seem to possess a minimum level of intelligence.
The most serious deficit of the Bush administration is a simple lack of intelligence (see Iraq, see Afghanistan, see Katrina, see Wall Street, etc.). Most presidents can overcome their shortcomings by placing smart advisors in key positions. Unfortunately, Bush chose mostly to surround himself with idealogues and yes men, and we’ve seen where that gets you.
Regardless of what you think about their policies, experience, and idealogies, at least Oboma/Biden will bring a higher level of intelligence to the oval office.

Biden, like his running mate last week, looked, acted, and sounded presidential. He had a grasp of facts and conveyed them in a logical, well-thought out manner. Conversely, Palin continues to show her inexperience and her joe-six-pack folksy charm, that though engaging in a supermarket, has no place when you represent the United States of America. I cannot imagine Palin negotiating with world leaders tackling the world’s or even the nation’s problems. It takes more than coaching, it takes real instincts, temperment, judgement, knowledge, and wisdom, attributes entirely missing in both Mccain and Palin.

I am a staunch Democrat. That said, I think the bar was so low for Palin because of horrible interviews this week. She did so much better than most people thought. Does this mean she is qualified? Can she step into the office of the Presidency tomorrow? Did she have command of the issues? how about facts? She is a very likable person but so are many of my friends - they are not qualified for this position. I believe the debate was won by Joe Biden and I’m really trying to be independant in my thinking. He has been in so many debates before and had so much going for him before it started it was an uphill climb for Palin. She didn’t do bad but she didn’t answer alot of the questions always turning back to energy because that is what she knows best. We the American people must decide who will try to get us out of the mess we are in. Please get to know the issues, study the consequences and vote your conscience. This country is in very bad shape.

He voted PRESENT more than he voted on real legislation. WOW! Some candidate Jay.

This is truly disappointing to read so many negative comments.
Our Nation is at risk in so many ways and both Democrats and Republicans are at each other throats.
We will need to band together in order for our country to remain strong and survive this huge economic problem.
To Pompono: You really need to grow up this is not the time for those type of comments.
Governor Palin and Senator Biden both did well according to their expectations!
Senator Biden simply knows much more then Governor Palin in terms of the world problems.
We cannot believe that a Governor of a small state can make changes in Washington when Senator McClain has not made any changes in Washington himself.
I have seen Senator Obama record and I wonder why so many mention he has not done much.
I do not see much difference in bills sign or sign on to from both senators.
But what I do see if one of the presidential candidate has a much better VP candidate.
That candidate is Joe Biden. Governor Palin cannot lend much to helping make change when she lacks knowledge about basic policy issues in Washington.
I am going to vote for Obama/Biden last night proved they can form a very strong team right now!
Senator McClain this past week proved from an economic view point he really has not ideas or in put on how to help our nation.

What debate were you watching last night b/c it sure wasn’t the VP one! Palin did all she could to duck issues, issues that are critical for our nation right now. From the day she was selected for the VP spot she has ranted about Obama’s experience. Couric called her on it and last night by her refusing to answer pointed questions by the moderator she tried to get Joe Six Pack and Soccer Moms to bail her out. For a clam bake like you to sit there and blab about Oblama this or that is weak as the weakest tea.
