Paul Newman dead at 83….
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
… he was a class act all around. A movie star who never got too full of himself, and a guy who seemed to get a lot of fun out of life while honoring his responsibility to his fellow man.
I think my favorite Newman films were probably “Hud,” “Cool Hand Luke” and “Slapshot,” which was on cable a few weeks ago and was still funny as hell.
We should all live lives so full.
Oh, and one more thing I should mention. His Newman’s Own Caesars salad dressing is excellent.

Truly a fine actor and great American Liberal. Our country will miss him, but his legacy will be infinite. And on a lighter note, in the 50’s and 60’s he was one of the most physically attractive men on the planet.

Jay: 8:03 last thread, name jacker.
Yawn.
Why no warning to the blog, is it because only Cons are getting jacked?

Oh, sad day indeed for the world of great movies. Newman was one of the best. How I will miss his charming ability.
There are no stars to take the place of the real actors who made marvelous entertainment. Clark Gable, Gregory Peck, John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and now…Paul Newman. They could carry us into a script and make us live it with them. Happy, sad, gritty, glamorous….they could do it.
I don’t bother much with movies anymore. The superficial scenarios and harpy heroes don’t cut it. Until another Newman appears on the screen, I will hack it with old reruns and good books.

You forgot to mention a marriage unlike most in Hollywood.
My brother turned me into a classic movie buff. “Cool Hand Luke” was his all time favorite. Mine?
Ben Quick in “The Long Hot Summer”. The depths of emotion he portrayed in that movie have been unparalleled by any since. Very sexy!
“Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” was another good one.
The world has lost a remarkable man in every sense of the word.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was classic.
RIP Paul and thank God you weren’t in Steel Magnolias. Our host has some odd tastes in movies, (but we’ll keep that between you and me.)

Paul Newman .. Not only a film icon but a humanitarian as well!
A person who started a company, and donated all profits some $200 million to charities!
A good person married to the same woman for 50 years…A person who once said when asked how he managed to stay happily married when he had the pick of the litter..Answered “Why would I want hamburger when I already have Steak!
RIP!!!!

We lived in CT for years-my husband worked in Wesport and in Stamford. He met Paul Newman and said he was gracious, kind, and just an all around ‘nice guy.’
We don’t have too many ‘classy’ actors like that anymore, do we?

Jay:
Paul Newman’s Ceaser Salad dressing is TOOOOOOOO salty. You need to take better care of yourself so we conservatives can continue to kick you around on this blog (he, he, he). Switch to Ken’s — less sodium and it tastes better.

If you haven’t seen it (or even if you haven’t seen it recently), rent “Hombre” (1967, I think)—underrated and definitely one of Newnan’s best (also an ensemble cast that includes great performances from Fredric March, Martin Balsam and Richard Boone).

The acting world will never know the likes of another like Paul Newman. All these young people who think they are actors aren’t even in his class. He will be greatly missed. I met him once and consider myself lucky to have met and spent a few minutes with him.
