MSNBC dropping anchors in storm

MSNBC has announced that it is removing both Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews from election-related anchor responsibilities.

Good move. In fact, how were they ever put in that seat in the first place?

I’ve never watched Olbermann on TV, but I’ve caught one or two of his rants on YouTube. Not my cup of tea. He can be hilarious doing sports, but he seems to have become trapped by his own schtick on politics. Outrage doesn’t wear well over the long haul; eventually it becomes feigned.

I rarely if ever watch Matthews either, maybe because the last thing I want to do when I get home is watch more news and opinion. But Olbermann in particular has no place in an anchor position.

Neither does Lou Dobbs on CNN, by the way. The guy’s lost it. He’s unwatchable.

Totally agree with the above article. PBS with Laher is the only news worth watching to me.

I have stated before that they routinely offer a name and picture in silence of all the dead American soldiers. This is a lot much more than all the flag waving nut jobs on Fox or MSNBC. And Lou Dobbs would be surprised to see that close to half of those dead Americans have Latino last names.

Jay B,

Hopefully this won’t be deemed “off topic,” but what the hell is this idiot GOPs got to go talking about?

You libs see the deaths of our brave soldiers as an opportunity for you to pout and sport your indignation with all things American?

That’s rather sick.

I hate to break the news to you, nutcase, but each and every one of those soldiers had that “flag” sewed onto the shoulder of their uniform and fully understood the meaning of duty, honor, country.

I found it disgusting to watch Tim Russert interview GOPers from his kneepads, and Chris “Pillsbury Doughboy” Matthews is the same sort - a closet GOPer - although he speaks for many GOPers when he talks about the tingly feeling down his leg he gets when Obama speaks. I turned the channel when either one of those arseclowns were/are on.

David Gregory is an empty-headed empty suit, and he seemed to enjoy dancing with Karl/a Rove, so maybe he can get Jeff Gannon-Guckert’s old pass to the backrooms (and bedrooms and bathrooms) of the Dumbya White House…

Dobbs is hysterical, a true megalomaniac, in the same league as morons like Limblahhh, Hannitypoo, and Falafel Boy.

Olbermann has done nothing to deserve your throwing him under the bus with the Goebbel’s wannabes. Shame on you, Mr. Bookman. You are making a moral equivalency between Olbermann vs. Dobbs and Doughboy that shows just how spineless and wishy-washy and without a sense of decency you are.

I think the approval rating of Congress by the people pretty much says they stink badly - both parties. It would be nice to actually here any anchors ( versus boat anchors and flotsom ) on any show speak about the importance of our constitution, free markets without the influence of goverment, capitalism rule #1 - you screw up its your fault and Uncle Sam should never bail anyone out for being stupid. We are becoming a society that where people desire to be rewarded for failing as an individual or a corporation and achievement should be punished.

RW: Olberman is road kill.

The libs fully understand how far they have crossed the line and see the looming wave coming, now it’s time to sacrifice one of their own to the god of the seas, uh, if Fake Temple Pilot hasn’t assumed that role.

Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews and Rachel Maddow are the best journalists on the entire network, including NBC. Why?….they always back up anything they say with factual proof not a close source….etc…..NBC is giving in to John McCain and the republicans. Is this something that a real journalist should investigate?…If this happens I know of 2 million people who will not watch your network anymore. Just go to Senator Obama’s web site and read the blogs…..

Good call on this. Olbermann was essentially an entertainer aka Hannity. MSNBC lost a lot of credibility when they touted him as an anchor. Schtick. That was a good word for his routines.

Mathews was a bit better (more of a political animal) but his bias came through. Sure he started out in the political world but for a liberal example of how to adapt, see George Stephanopoulos.

Mrs. Godzilla’s gonna come after you in the morning. Same with Midori.

Lou Dobbs unwatchable? I watched him. For a few seconds. But I watched!

It seems that the corporate media (NBC) has surrendered to the McCain sniveling about the liberal media bias. Olbermann and Matthews had the audacity to question the corporate party line about McCain’s connection to G. W. and Palin’s alliance with the christian right.

I agree with you on this one Jay. I don’t think anybody who has an opinion show should serve as anchor. I’d feel the same if it were Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly, or someone else from the other side. Too bad David Brinkley isn’t still with us but you can’t turn back the hands of time. NBC does have Tom Brokaw though.

They all kind of lost their credibility when they started hawking books, coffee mugs, tshirts, etc. on their shows. I’ve always viewed these people as just performers and that helps state my case.

I usually get most of my info from CSPAN and reading. Who wants to listen to any of these shows with 2 or more people hollering at each other? Half the time they talk over each other so much you can’t follow either one of them.

I never liked Olbermann on ESPN. For all the upside of ESPN I’ve never liked it’s sportscaster as comedian bent.

I don’t like Jon Stewart either. When questioned he will say his show isn’t a news show it’s a comedy show. I think he’s trying to have it both ways.

The thing that always made it work for Johnny Carson (one of the best at political satire in my opinion) is that he skewered everybody. I actually don’t even know what his political beliefs were. Didn’t matter; he was funny and cut down the middle.

If people don’t like or agree with Lou Dobbs that’s cool but I kinda doubt he hates Hispanics. He did marry Debbie Segura after all. They have been married many years if memory serves.

Although I agree with most of what he says, I can’t bear watching Obermann, especially when he puts on a voice. What CAN be said for him is that he does not claim to be independent.

Uhmmmm Jay?

I just saw the Cynthia Tucker/Fox News encounter on T.V. . I couldn’t remember exactly how you and Cynthia said it went down, so I went back to your Bravado piece.

Here’s where you began the story:

As Tucker stopped outside her house to pick up her mail, the Fox camera crew emerged out of a car parked across the street and advanced on her, yelling questions. At this point, I’ll turn it over to Tucker for the blow-by-blow account, as she recalls it

I didn’t see that emboldened part where they advanced on her yelling questions.

Do you have video to corroborate your claims? And then there’s this from Cynthia:

(They ran behind me, shouting, “Why weren’t you in Minneapolis? You went to the Democratic Convention. Why didn’t you go to the Republican Convention?” I didn’t look back — just got in my car and drove into my driveway.)

O.K., I didn’t see them running behind her with all that shouting and stuff. Her car was already in her driveway.

Can you either confirm or deny which of yours and/or Cynthia’s account may or may not have been right or wrong?

BTW! That’s a BIG house Cynthia lives in. Lots of space to share with the homeless if she’s feeling so inclined.

If they edited out the person chasing after her yelling questions, one might expect to see some reaction from her. I hope your reporters are as respectful when they go after a story.

On another note, how well do you understand IP addresses? It’s not like one gets stamped into your DNA when life begins.

Both Andy of many names and RW have a LONG track record of delusional and unsubstantiated claims, many of which were persona, venomousl and scurrilous in nature.

Which of course, reflects very poorly on them and has nothing to do with me or the other recipients of such garbage.

Yet it appears neither will ultimately accept the truth…

Hmm. I’m a stalker for posting a few times a day.

How about addressing any of my comments instead of whining that it is only you who is allowed to criticize.

For example, you never bothered to explain why you were so outraged by Westmoreland’s use of the term uppity, yet had no such concerns about Bidens praise of Obama for being clean and articulate. Or you explain how your devotion of a whole blog entry to this trivial matter squares with your derision of incessant outrage.

Or you can just keep being indignant.

Doesn’t anyone watch football on Monday Night anymore?????

I read some tool named Terry @ 719p last night was upset at NBC for pulling Olbermann and Matthews, saying that they’ll lose 2 million viewers for doing so?

NBC will have to hire about 300,000 to reach that 2 million mark, and barring that occurrence, means that they will have no one at all watching them. NBC swirled its way into the septic tank for Obama months ago, and maybe this is their way to try to use the plunger to unclog the mess they’ve made of their network.

I didn’t see the whole thing on Cynthia Tucker on Fox last night (switching back and forth during the game), but did hear her in total denial/lying before she leaps into her car and drove behind the house.

I did see Obama v. O’Reilly, and he appeared to be sweating. The sweat glands may be in full flow tonight when they show the segment about his relationships with Ayers, Wright, etc. Does anyone actually believe this toad about Wright in particular, not ever one time in 20+ years ever hearing any racially charged or hateful rhetoric? If you do, go join Mathews (after he gets treated for this funny man-feeling running up his leg) and Olbermann in the penalty box till after Nov 5th.

I am glad that MSNBC did what they did both to Matthews and Olbermann considering they were partisan hacks trying to act like objective journalists. They should have remained as analysts.

Now why does the AJC continue to remain so silent on the “Fairness Doctrine” when they know that it would affect part of their parent company’s media affiliation, including WSB AM with Boortz, Howard, Hannity, Caen, and Savage? Could it be that the AJC supports this too? The newspaper’s silence is deafening!

RW-(the original) 8:35pm

[[O’Reilly just said that next week he was going to start running something he called the Obama Chronicles, so I guess there’s your answer on whether he was going to proceed with that multi-part series.]]

It’ll be interesting to compare what Obama said in the interviews with what gets put up on the “Chronicles.”

Good give-and-take on the economy last night. I think I heard Obama say he’d probably limit the capital gains tax increase to 20 percent (from 15) and there could be an upper limit on income subject to Social Security withholding (the payroll tax).

General question: what other journalist has gotten that kind of specific economic information from Sen Obama?

RW-(the original) 8:58 pm

The segment had the interviewer saying to Ms Tucker that the Spears kids were running around unsupervised, then asking what evidence she had that the Palin daughter was. Ms Tucker responded by saying she was inferring BOR was a hypocrite. The interviewer did not say infer – but I seem to recall the video posting by Mr. Bookman had that in.

Bottom line: AJC and BOR have a little feud going – some of it may be genuine – but it sure garners attention, viewers and $$$ for both.

AJC/DNC Management 7:22 am

[Republican John McCain raised about $5 million in Chicago Monday night, or about $1 million for each hour he spent in Democrat Barack Oblahma’s home town. ]]

Looks like Sen Obama’s decision to bypass public funding for his campaign and rely on private donors (opposite of McCain) may not give him a huge $$$ lead – seems Hillary supporters aren’t paying up.

People vote with their pocketbooks. This is not a good indicator of strong support by traditional Democratic power brokers.

Link: Straining to reach money goal Obama presses donors

Bud Wiser 7:20 am

Obama sweating during the O’Reilly interview? I thought he appeared pretty confident and relaxed. After the interview BOR said of Obama (likely directed at those who assert he won’t be ‘tough enough’ in foreign affairs): “He’s a very tough guy, a very determined, driven man and I could learn that only by sitting face to face with him.”

Jay maybe you can explain to everyone the difference between journalism and commentary. That was the heart of the issue at MSNBC. If they would admit that what they are doing is commentating and not doing journalism then we wouldn’t have this issue but they tout themselves as real journalist. When you watch or listen to Hannity or Beck you know that they are commentators and not real journalist, that is the honesty we need to have out of MSNBC. I was impressed with Joe Scarborough on MSNBC who was the best journalist the entire two weeks of the conventions.

Yes, Keith Olbermann can delve into the purple prose but, like Jon Stewart, he backs up what he is saying with video and other documentation. The entertainment and amusement value is high, but I have learned quite a bit, and when I do other research, the facts are there.

The outrage does show in his Special Comments, but just accept those and mind the rest of the show.

Lest anyone forget the foundations of this thread…..

Olbermann and Matthews were removed from their anchor slots because they were (I believe rightly so) lacking in objectivity.

Frankly, I would say that this more than anything was the biggest complaint that Republican (and the Hillary Clinton) campaigns have had against MSNBC for a good while. These two were (in my opinion) political hacks being presented as journalists instead of political commentators / moderators.

That said, for all the recriminations about Jay, his material is published under the “Opinion” page & this blog is a part of their opinions offering. Material published as editorial commentary or opinion are not expected to be “objective”. The intent is to take a side!

Would I like to see more published editorial commentary from a conservative perspective? Yes. Do I think that they are missing out on the opportunity to represent the voices of a large number of potential readers? Yes.

However, as someone who doesn’t own stock in Cox & has no fiduciary interest in it, I take this for what it is - a place to hear -opinions- and comment on them!
